Converting from NIS to Redhat Identity Management
The Jefferson Lab (Jlab) accelerator controls network has transitioned to a new authentication and network service interface. The new system uses the Redhat Identity Manager (IdM) as a single integrating front end to the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) and a replacement for NIS and the Kerberos authentication service. This system allows for integration of access and authentication across Unix and Windows environments and across different Jlab computing environments, including across firewalls. The decision making process, conversion steps, issues and solutions will be discussed.
Machine Learning for Improved Availability of the SNS Klystron High Voltage Converter Modulators
Beam availability has increased at the SNS, however, the targeted availability is greater than 95 %, while the SNS has failed to meet lower targets in the past. The HVCM used to power the linac klystrons have been one source of lost beam time and was chosen to explore using AI/ML techniques to improve reliability. Among the possibilities being explored are automating the tuning of HVCMs and predicting component failures such as capacitor aging, rectifier assemblies containing hundreds of diodes, and insulating oil degradation. The methodology pursued includes data cleaning, de-noising, post-analysis data labeling, and machine learning model development. We explore using Long Short-Term Memory and autoencoders for anomaly detection and prognostication used to schedule maintenance. We evaluate the use of model regularizers and constraints to improve the performance of the model and investigate methods to estimate the uncertainty of the models to provide a robust prediction with statistical interoperability. This paper describes the operational experience and known failures of the HVCMs and the proposed ML methodology and the preliminary results of training the AI/ML algorithms.
Simulation of Nanoscale High-Efficiency Thermionic Converters
LBNL provided development and feedback for Warp's mesh refinement solver and cutcell capabilities, authoring adjusted implementations for use with the dielectric solver in 3D. This work has been documented in a separate branch of the RadiaSoft Warp fork, and is currently under review. LBNL has also provided feedback on the new tests developed to study dielectric charging and shaped emitters. The LBNL contributions enabled the Radiasoft team to progress steadily and meet the goal of the projects for the duration of the collaboration. Results have been reported in one refereed paper, three proceeding papers, four oral and six poster presentions.
A Process for Converting Corn Bran to Furfural without Mineral Acids
Furfural is a bio-derived industrial chemical that has been identified as a platform chemical for the production of renewable fuels and chemicals. Currently, domestic feedstock and processing costs are high, so United States-based furfural production is not competative on the global market. Furthermore, furfural production costs must be much less than the current market price if it is to be competative platform for bio fuels and chemicals. An alternative low-cost feedstock for furfural is corn bran from a corn ethanol process. We have proposed a new process for producing furfural from corn bran that consumes no mineral acids. The high hemicellulose content of corn bran reduces capital and operating costs. Eliminating mineral acids reduces chemical consumption and makes the residual solids suitable for consumption as animal feed. The combination of a low cost source of hemicellulose and high valued residue could make the proposed process more economical than current processes based on corncobs.

Environmentally Robust Quantum Dot Down Converters for Highly Efficient Solid State Lighting
This project contributes fundamental understanding of the chemical synthesis of cadmium free quantum dots (QDs) designed for solid state lighting (SSL). Methods to incorporate gallium into quantum dot architectures were explored, which led to more stable and brighter solid state lighting devices. These findings will help advance the incorporation of quantum dots in highly energy efficient lighting devices with a warm color spectrum. Such Cd-free lighting devices can greatly accelerate the adoption of high efficiency, warm spectrum lighting in buildings. The project targeted InP/GaP/ZnS colloidal quantum dots that more effectively absorb the blue light produced by light emitting diode packages and emit monochromatic red light with near perfect efficiency. While significant improvements in the QD absorptivity were demonstrated, the absorbance increase achieved was 3x rather than the targeted 10x increase. Similarly, the luminescence from these QDs achieved about half of the target photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and twice the desired spectral width, a measure of the color purity of their luminescence. While the target characteristics and some of the year 2/2 milestones were not met, the new QD architectures did lead to greater stability on SSL packages, a sign of the long term promise of the technology.

Investigating Benefits and Challenges of Converting Retiring Coal Plants into Nuclear Plants
A coal-to-nuclear (C2N) transition means siting a nuclear reactor at the site of a recently retired coal power plant. Three overarching questions from the C2N transition guide this research: where in the United States are retired coal facilities located and what factors make a site feasible for transition; what factors of technology, cost, and project timeline drive investor economics over such a decision; and how will C2N impact local communities? The study team evaluated the siting characteristics of recently retired plants and those operating coal-fired power plant sites run by a utility or an independent power producer utilizing publicly available data to screen U.S. coal power plant sites to nuclear-feasible locations. After screening all retired coal sites to a set of 157 potential candidates and screening operating sites to a set of 237 candidates, the study team estimates that 80% of retired and operating coal power plant sites that were evaluated have the basic characteristics needed to be considered amenable to host an advanced nuclear reactor. For the recently retired plant sites evaluated, this represents a capacity potential of 64.8 GWe to be backfit at 125 sites. For the operating plant sites evaluated, this represents a capacity potential of 198.5 GWe to be backfit at 190 sites. This report evaluates a case study for the detailed impacts and potential outcomes from a C2N transition. Based on the nuclear technology choices and sizes evaluated to replace a large coal plant of 1,200 MWe generation capacity at the case study site, nuclear overnight costs of capital could decrease by 15% to 35% when compared to a greenfield construction project, through the reuse of infrastructure from the coal facility. Nuclear replacement designs can have a lower capacity size because nuclear power plants run at higher capacity factors than coal power plants. In the case study replacing coal capacity with 924 GWe of nuclear capacity, the study team found regional economic activity could increase by as much as $\$275 million$ and add 650 new, permanent jobs to the region of analysis. The evaluated site choice in the report is hypothetical for analysis purposes only and based on available data and documented assumptions. Consequently, the findings only inform at a general level. A community, investor, or other interested stakeholder can use these results to set up a detailed, in-depth analysis for a specific application of interest, such as evaluating a C2N transition of a specific coal power plant and a specific nuclear technology design. The report was subjected to independent peer reviews by experts in systems engineering and regional economic modeling to evaluate analysis and assumptions.
