A fractional model for anomalous diffusion with increased variability: Analysis, algorithms and applications to interface problems

Fractional equations have become the model of choice in several applications where heterogeneities at the microstructure result in anomalous diffusive behavior at the macroscale. Here, we introduce a new fractional operator characterized by a doubly-variable fractional order and possibly truncated interactions. Under certain conditions on the model parameters and on the regularity of the fractional order we show that the corresponding Poisson problem is well-posed. Additionally, we introduce a finite element discretization and describe an efficient implementation of the finite-element matrix assembly in the case of piecewise constant fractional order. Through several numerical tests, we illustrate the improved descriptive power of this new operator across media interfaces. Furthermore, we present one-dimensional and two-dimensional h-convergence results that show that the variable-order model has the same convergence behavior as the constant-order model.

Tailoring compatibilization potential of maleic anhydride–grafted polypropylene by sequential rheochemical processing of polypropylene and polyamide 66 blends

Reactive compatibilization of immiscible polymer blends using a preferred compatibilizer leaves the following question: How much loading of a compatibilizer is good enough and what maximum properties can be achieved? A good understanding of the process can help solve the reutilization of mixed waste plastics. Here, the reactive compatibilization of polypropylene-graft-maleic anhydride (PP-g-MAH) on polypropylene/polyamide 66 (PP/PA66) blends is quantitatively assessed using thermorheological, microoptical, spectroscopic, and x-ray scattering-based characterization tools. The overall compositions of all PP(60%)/PA66(30%)/PP-g-MAH(10%) blends are kept constant while systematically controlling the degree of the chemical reaction by varying the sequential addition of PP-g-MAH to the melt mixture. The first feeding of PP-g-MAH (x%, 0 ≤ x ≤ 10) is conducted at 280°C and the second feeding of (10–x)% is at 200°C. During the first step, a larger amount of chemical activity is observed up to 4%–6% addition of PP-g-MAH. Furthermore, the constant chemical composition allows a systematic comparison of the compatibilizer-dependent thermal, rheological, morphological, and mechanical properties. With an increased degree of interfacial reaction, the size of dispersed PA66 domains decreases to register improved interfacial adhesion with the PP matrix, yielding enhanced Young's modulus and absolute failure strength of the isotropic matrix.

UV-Induced Degradation and Associated Metastability in TOPCon Photovoltaic Modules: Understanding Kinetics and Cell Variance

Tunnel oxide passivated contact (TOPCon) silicon photovoltaic (PV) modules are dominating the PV market, but they may be susceptible to degradation under ultraviolet (UV)-containing light. Quantifying the impacts of UV-induced degradation (UVID) is complicated by an associated metastability causing further degradation under dark storage and rapid recovery under sunlight. Here, we study modules that have -2.3% to -3.2% nonrecoverable UVID loss after 60 kWh/m2 dose of 340 nm light and additional recoverable loss under dark storage. We use in situ electroluminescence (EL) imaging to characterize the post-UVID metastability at the module level. The cell-by-cell dark degradation and recovery kinetics span a wide range from +6% to -70% changes in EL intensity after 520 h of dark storage, which returns to +- 4% of the initial post-UVID EL intensity after illumination. The kinetics follow double exponential rates with dark storage degradation time constants of 345 and 45 h, and UV light recovery time constants of 5 min and 36 s. We propose that this is consistent with prior reports of kinetics for light-soaking metastability in Al2O3 passivation. Finally, we further show that cells having high UVID also have injection-dependent effective carrier lifetimes and significant intra-cell variance, suggesting possible origins of processing inconsistency.

Toward Addressing the Challenge to Predict the Heat Capacities of RDX and HMX Energetic Materials

Availability of heat capacity as function of pressure and temperature is an essential prerequisite for development of a computational multiscale strategy capable to address the evolution of microstructure and energy release in advanced high energy density materials. In the case of 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazinane (RDX) and 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocane (HMX) systems as two of the most studied energetic materials, there are substantial gaps in experimental data, with available heat capacities values distributed only in a region close to standard ambient conditions. In this study we demonstrate how these major experimental limitations can be addressed in the case of the RDX and HMX systems based on the combined use of classical and quantum mechanical calculations. We show that by considering ideal gas properties evaluated using quantum mechanical methods, and residual properties obtained from molecular simulations using fully flexible atomistic force field models, excellent agreement can be obtained for the predicted heat capacities to the most recent experimental values. An important advantage of the current computational methodology is that it allows evaluation of both constant-volume and constant-pressure heat capacities for a broad interval of temperatures and pressures, which encompasses solid and liquid phases conditions. In the case of the solid α and γ phases of RDX and the β phase of HMX, the predicted results follow closely both the available experimental data at standard ambient conditions and the results obtained using density functional theory calculations at high pressures, a regime where experimental data are not available. A perspective to expand the current methodology is also discussed.

Higgs Inflation and the Electroweak Gauge Sector

Abstract We introduce a method that allows the Higgs to be the inflaton. The Higgs is considered as a pseudo‐Nambu‐Goldstone (pNG) boson of a global coset symmetry , which is spontaneously breaks at an energy scale . A suitable Chern−Simons (CS) interaction is given to it, with representing the dimensionless CS coupling strength and an decay constant. As a result, slow‐roll inflation occurs via ‐induced friction down a steep sinusoidal potential. To obey electroweak symmetry, the lowest‐order CS interaction is required to be quadratic in the Higgs, with the coupling strength . Higher‐order interaction terms keep the full Lagrangian nearly invariant under the approximate pNG shift symmetry. Employing the simplest symmetry coset , ‐folds of inflation occur when . Successfully explaining inflation necessitates small values of the decay constant, ; this in turn requires large , which is ruled out by electric dipole measurements. Although the electroweak hierarchy problem while achieving successful inflation, the real benefit is found in providing a different path to identifying the Higgs as the inflaton, outside the standard modified‐gravity framework.

Three-point functions in $\mathrm{ABJM}$ and Bethe Ansatz

We develop an integrability-based framework to compute structure constants of two sub-determinant operators and a single-trace non-BPS operator in ABJM theory in the planar limit. In this first paper, we study them at weak coupling using a relation to an integrable spin chain. We first develop a nested Bethe ansatz for an alternating SU(4) spin chain that describes single-trace operators made out of scalar fields. We then apply it to the computation of the structure constants and show that they are given by overlaps between a Bethe eigenstate and a matrix product state. We conjecture that the determinant operator corresponds to an integrable matrix product state and present a closed-form expression for the overlap, which resembles the so-called Gaudin determinant. We also provide evidence for the integrability of general sub-determinant operators. The techniques developed in this paper can be applied to other quantities in ABJM theory including three-point functions of single-trace operators.

Alpha-alpha scattering in the Multiverse

We investigate the phase shifts of low-energy α-α scattering under variations of the fundamental parameters of the Standard Model, namely the light quark mass, the electromagnetic fine-structure constant as well as the QCD θ-angle. As a first step, we recalculate α-α scattering in our Universe utilizing various improvements in the adiabatic projection method, which leads to an improved, parameter-free prediction of the S- and D-wave phase shifts for laboratory energies below 10 MeV. We find that positive shifts in the pion mass have a small effect on the S-wave phase shift, whereas lowering the pion mass adds some repulsion in the two-alpha system. The effect on the D-wave phase shift turns out to be more pronounced as signaled by the D-wave resonance parameters. Variations of the fine-structure constant have almost no effect on the low-energy α-α phase shifts. We further show that up-to-and-including next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion, variations of these phase shifts with respect to the QCD θ-angle can be expressed in terms of the θ-dependent pion mass.

Emergent area laws from entangled matrices

We consider a wavefunction of large N matrices supported close to an emergent classical fuzzy sphere geometry. The SU( N ) Gauss law of the theory enforces correlations between the matrix degrees of freedom associated to a geometric subregion and their complement. We call this ‘Gauss law entanglement’. We show that the subregion degrees of freedom transform under a single dominant, low rank representation of SU( N ). The corresponding Gauss law entanglement entropy is given by the logarithm of the dimension of this dominant representation. It is found that, after coarse-graining in momentum space, the SU( N ) Gauss law entanglement entropy is proportional to the geometric area bounding the subregion. The constant of proportionality goes like the inverse of an emergent Maxwell coupling constant, reminiscent of gravitational entropy.

QCD axion dark matter from a late time phase transition

We investigate the possibility that the Peccei-Quinn phase transition occurs at a temperature far below the symmetry breaking scale. Low phase transition temperatures are typical in supersymmetric theories, where symmetry breaking fields have small masses. We find that QCD axions are abundantly produced just after the phase transition. The observed dark matter abundance is reproduced even if the decay constant is much lower than 10 11 GeV. The produced axions tend to be warm. For some range of the decay constant, the effect of the predicted warmness on structure formation can be confirmed by future observations of 21 cm lines. A portion of parameter space requires a mixing between the Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking field and the Standard Model Higgs, and predicts an observable rate of rare Kaon decays.

Sterile neutrinos and neutrinoless double beta decay in effective field theory

We investigate neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ) in the presence of sterile neutrinos with Majorana mass terms. These gauge-singlet fields are allowed to interact with Standard-Model (SM) fields via renormalizable Yukawa couplings as well as higher-dimensional gauge-invariant operators up to dimension seven in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory extended with sterile neutrinos. At the GeV scale, we use Chiral effective field theory involving sterile neutrinos to connect the operators at the level of quarks and gluons to hadronic interactions involving pions and nucleons. This allows us to derive an expression for 0νββ rates for various isotopes in terms of phase-space factors, hadronic low-energy constants, nuclear matrix elements, the neutrino masses, and the Wilson coefficients of higher-dimensional operators. The required hadronic low-energy constants and nuclear matrix elements depend on the neutrino masses, for which we obtain interpolation formulae grounded in QCD and chiral perturbation theory that improve existing formulae that are only valid in a small regime of neutrino masses. The resulting framework can be used directly to assess the impact of 0νββ experiments on scenarios with light sterile neutrinos and should prove useful in global analyses of sterile-neutrino searches. We per- form several phenomenological studies of 0νββ in the presence of sterile neutrinos with and without higher-dimensional operators. We find that non-standard interactions involving sterile neutrinos have a dramatic impact on 0νββ phenomenology, and next-generation experiments can probe such interactions up to scales of $\mathcal O$ (100) TeV.

Search for an axion-like particle with forward proton scattering in association with photon pairs at ATLAS

A search for forward proton scattering in association with light-by-light scattering mediated by an axion-like particle is presented, using the ATLAS Forward Proton spectrometer to detect scattered protons and the central ATLAS detector to detect pairs of outgoing photons. Proton-proton collision data recorded in 2017 at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV were analysed, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 14.6 fb –1 . A total of 441 candidate events were selected. A search was made for a narrow resonance in the diphoton mass distribution, corresponding to an axion-like particle (ALP) with mass in the range 150–1600 GeV. No excess is observed above a smooth background. Upper limits on the production cross section of a narrow resonance are set as a function of the mass, and are interpreted as upper limits on the ALP production coupling constant, assuming 100% decay branching ratio into a photon pair. The inferred upper limit on the coupling constant is in the range 0.04–0.09 TeV –1 at 95% confidence level.

From Navier-Stokes to Maxwell via Einstein

We revisit the cutoff surface formulation of fluid-gravity duality in the context of the classical double copy. The spacetimes in this fluid-gravity duality are algebraically special, with Petrov type II when the spacetime is four dimensional. We find two special classes of fluids whose dual spacetimes exhibit higher algebraic speciality: constant vorticity flows have type D gravity duals, while potential flows map to type N spacetimes. Using the Weyl version of the classical double copy, we construct associated single-copy gauge fields for both cases, finding that constant vorticity fluids map to a solenoid gauge field. Additionally we find the scalar in a potential flow fluid maps to the zeroth copy scalar.

Normalization of ZZ instanton amplitudes in type 0B minimal superstring theory

Abstract We study ZZ instanton corrections in the (2,4k)$$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 1 minimal superstring theory with the type 0B GSO projection, which becomes the type 0B$$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 1 super-JT gravity in thek→ ∞ limit. Each member of the (2,4k) family of theories has two phases distinguished by the sign of the Liouville bulk cosmological constant. The worldsheet method for computing the one-loop normalization constant multiplying the instanton corrections gives an ill-defined answer in both phases. We fix these divergences using insights from string field theory and find finite, unambiguous results. Each member of the (2,4k) family of theories is dual to a double-scaled one-matrix integral, where the double-scaling limit can be obtained starting either from a unitary matrix integral with a leading one-cut saddle point, or from a hermitian matrix integral with a leading two-cut saddle point. The matrix integral exhibits a gap-closing transition, which is the same as the double-scaled Gross-Witten-Wadia transition whenk= 1. We also compute instanton corrections in the double-scaled matrix integral for allkand in both phases, and find perfect agreement with the string theory results.

Interacting CFTs for all couplings: thermal versus entanglement entropy at large N

In this paper, I calculate the large N limit of marginal O(N) models with non-polynomial potentials in arbitrary odd dimensions d. This results in a new class of interacting pure conformal field theories (CFTs) in d = 3 + 4n for any n ϵ $\mathbb{Z}$ + . Similarly, in d = 3 + 4n I calculate the thermal entropy for all couplings on R 2+4n × S 1 for n = 0, 1, 2, 3. In 2+1 dimensions I find the strong-to-weak coupling ratio of the thermal entropy to be 4/5, matching recent results, and further extend this analysis to higher odd dimensions. Next, I calculated the vacuum entanglement entropy ${s}_{\textrm{EE}}^d$ on S d–2 for all couplings in arbitrary odd d in the large N limit. I find the vacuum entanglement entropy on S d–2 to be not only solvable but also constant for all couplings λ. Thus, in the large N limit, the vacuum entanglement entropy on S d–2 for odd d is constant for all λ, in contrast to the thermal entropy which is shown to also be monotonically decreasing with λ in d = 3 + 4n.

Hidden symmetry in the double copy

We show that the Killing tensor of the Kerr spacetime has an analogue in the $\sqrt{Kerr}$ gauge theory solution related to it by the classical double copy. This hidden symmetry of $\sqrt{Kerr}$ leads to an additional constant of motion for color-charged point particles moving in it, implying integrability of the equation of motion. These are the gauge theory counterparts to the Carter constant and the integrability of the geodesic equation in a Kerr background.

R -parity violation axiogenesis

We show that the rotation of the QCD axion field, aided by B–L violation from supersymmetric R-parity violating couplings, can yield the observed baryon abundance. Strong sphaleron processes transfer the angular momentum of the axion field into a quark chiral asymmetry, which R-parity violating couplings convert to the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. We focus on the case of dimensionless R-parity violating couplings with textures motivated by grand unified theories and comment on more general scenarios. The axion decay constant and mass spectrum of supersymmetric particles are constrained by Big Bang nucleosynthesis, proton decay from the R-parity violation, and successful thermalization of the Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking field. Axion dark matter may be produced by the axion rotation via the kinetic misalignment mechanism for axion decay constants below 10 10 GeV, or by the conventional misalignment mechanism for 10 11-12 GeV. The viable parameter region can be probed by proton decay and axion searches. This scenario may also have connections with collider experiments, including searches for long-lived particles, and observations of gravitational waves.

A precision test of averaging in AdS/CFT

We reconsider the role of wormholes in the AdS/CFT correspondence. We focus on Euclidean wormholes that connect two asymptotically AdS or hyperbolic regions with $\mathbb{S}$ 1 × $\mathbb{S}$ d-1 boundary. There is no solution to Einstein’s equations of this sort, as the wormholes possess a modulus that runs to infinity. To find on-shell wormholes we must stabilize this modulus, which we can do by fixing the total energy on the two boundaries. Such a wormhole gives the saddle point approximation to a non-standard problem in quantum gravity, where we fix two asymptotic boundaries and constrain the common energy. Crucially the dual quantity does not factorize even when the bulk is dual to a single CFT, on account of the fixed energy constraint. From this quantity we extract a smeared version of the microcanonical spectral form factor. For a chaotic theory this quantity is self-averaging, i.e. well-approximated by averaging over energy windows, or over coupling constants. We go on to give a precision test involving the microcanonical spectral form factor where the two replicas have slightly different coupling constants. In chaotic theories this form factor is known to smoothly decay at a rate universally predicted in terms of one replica physics, provided that there is an average either over a window or over couplings. We compute the expected decay rate for holographic theories, and the form factor from a wormhole, and the two exactly agree for a wide range of two-derivative effective field theories in AdS. This gives a precision test of averaging in AdS/CFT. Our results interpret a number of confusing facts about wormholes and factorization in AdS and suggest that we should regard gravitational effective field theory as a mesoscopic description, analogous to semiclassical mesoscopic descriptions of quantum chaotic systems.

Search for bottom-squark pair production with the ATLAS detector in final states containing Higgs bosons, $b$-jets and missing transverse momentum

The result of a search for the pair production of the lightest supersymmetric partner of the bottom quark ($\tilde{b}_1$) using 139 fb -1 of proton-proton data collected at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV by the ATLAS detector is reported. In the supersymmetric scenarios considered both of the bottom-squarks decay into a b-quark and the second-lightest neutralino, $\tilde{b}_1→b+\tilde{χ}^0_2$. Each $\tilde{χ}^0_2$ is assumed to subsequently decay with 100% branching ratio into a Higgs boson (h) like the one in the Standard Model and the lightest neutralino: $\tilde{χ}^0_2→h+\tilde{χ}^0_1$. The $\tilde{χ}^0_1$ is assumed to be the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) and is stable. Two signal mass configurations are targeted: the first has a constant LSP mass of 60 GeV; and the second has a constant mass difference between the $\tilde{χ}^0_2$ and $\tilde{χ}^0_1$ of 130 GeV. The final states considered contain no charged leptons, three or more b-jets, and large missing transverse momentum. No significant excess of events over the Standard Model background expectation is observed in any of the signal regions considered. Limits at the 95% confidence level are placed in the supersymmetric models considered, and bottom-squarks with mass up to 1.5 TeV are excluded.
