Calculation of linearized supersonic flow over slender cones of arbitrary cross section

Supersonic linearized conical-flow theory is used to determine the flow over slender pointed cones having horizontal and vertical planes of symmetry. The geometry of the cone cross sections and surface velocities are expanded in Fourier series. The symmetry condition permits the uncoupling of lifting and nonlifting solutions. The present method reduces to Ward's theory for flow over a cone of elliptic cross section. Results are also presented for other shapes. Results by this method diverge for cross-sectional shapes where the maximum thickness is large compared with the minimum thickness. However, even for these slender-body shapes, lower order solutions are good approximations to the complete solution.

Two-photon excitation cross section in light and intermediate atoms in frozen-core LS-coupling approximation

Using the method of explicit summation over the intermediate states two-photon absorption cross sections in light and intermediate atoms based on the simplistic frozen-core approximation and LS coupling have been formulated. Formulas for the cross section in terms of integrals over radial wave functions are given. Two selection rules, one exact and one approximate, valid within the stated approximations are derived. The formulas are applied to two-photon absorptions in nitrogen, oxygen, and chlorine. In evaluating the radial integrals, for low-lying levels, the Hartree-Fock wave functions, and for high-lying levels, hydrogenic wave functions obtained by the quantum-defect method have been used. A relationship between the cross section and the oscillator strengths is derived.

Multigroup Cross-section Generation in MCNP6.3 [Slides]

This presentation states that in comparison to the NJOY-produced multigroup cross sections, the MCNP-produced multigroup cross sections are generally consistent. Statistical uncertainties, however, are challenging and the unresolved resonance region may be looked at in the future. It also discusses how the SPM and LCS options were compared to each other for internal consistency. Additionally, some reactor pin-cell-like problems were used to compare to multigroup capabilities in other Monte Carlo codes (e.g., Serpent, OpenMC).

Elastic electron scattering cross sections for molecular hydrogen

Using an electron-beam - molecular-beam apparatus and employing the relative flow technique, ratios of the differential elastic scattering cross sections (DCSs of H2 to He were measured at incident electron energies of 15-100 eV and over the angular range of 10-125 degrees. From these ratios, the absolute elastic DCSs for H2 were determined by normalization to accurate, available elastic DCSs of He. Since pure rotational structure was not resolved in this work, the DCSs reported are the sum of elastic and rotational excitations of H2 at room temperature. The reliability of the relative flow normalization to He was checked at each energy and angle by performing similar elastic DCS measurements on Ne (for which the cross sections are known). The resulting absolute Ne DCSs were found to be in good agreement (within 10 percent with the Ne elastic DCSs measured previously (Register and Trajmar, 1984). From the DCSs, integral and momentumtransfer cross sections were calculated. The present results are compared with other recent measurements.

Differential cross section measurements for the production of top quark pairs and of additional jets using dilepton events from pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Differential cross sections for top quark pair ($\textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}$) production are measured in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV using a sample of events containing two oppositely charged leptons. The data were recorded with the CMS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . The differential cross sections are measured as functions of kinematic observables of the $\textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}$ system, the top quark and antiquark and their decay products, as well as of the number of additional jets in the event. The results are presented as functions of up to three variables and are corrected to the parton and particle levels. When compared to standard model predictions based on quantum chromodynamics at different levels of accuracy, it is found that the calculations do not always describe the observed data. The deviations are found to be largest for the multi-differential cross sections.

Measurements of the Higgs boson production cross section in the four-lepton final state in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV

The measurements of the Higgs boson (H) production cross sections performed by the CMS Collaboration in the four-lepton (4ℓ, ℓ = e, μ) final state at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 13.6 TeV are presented. These measurements are based on data collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC in 2022, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 34.7 fb −1 . Cross sections are measured in a fiducial region closely matching the experimental acceptance, both inclusively and differentially, as a function of the transverse momentum and the absolute value of the rapidity of the four-lepton system. The H → ZZ → 4ℓ inclusive fiducial cross section is measured to be ${2.89}_{-0.49}^{+0.53}{\left({\text{stat}}\right)}_{-0.21}^{+0.29}\left({\text{syst}}\right)$ fb, in agreement with the standard model expectation of ${2.89}_{-0.49}^{+0.53}{\left({\text{stat}}\right)}_{-0.21}^{+0.29}\left({\text{syst}}\right)$ fb.

Measurement of the neutrino-oxygen neutral-current quasielastic cross section using atmospheric neutrinos in the SK-Gd experiment

We report the first measurement of the atmospheric neutrino-oxygen neutral-current quasielastic (NCQE) cross section in the gadolinium-loaded Super-Kamiokande (SK) water Cherenkov detector. In June 2020, SK began a new experimental phase, named SK-Gd, by loading 0.011% by mass of gadolinium into the ultrapure water of the SK detector. The introduction of gadolinium to ultrapure water has the effect of improving the neutron-tagging efficiency. Using a 552.2 day dataset from August 2020 to June 2022, we measure the NCQE cross section to be 0.74 ± 0.22 ( stat ) − 0.15 + 0.85 ( syst ) × 10 − 38 cm 2 / oxygen in the energy range from 160 MeV to 10 GeV, which is consistent with the atmospheric neutrino-flux-averaged theoretical NCQE cross section and the measurement in the SK pure-water phase within the uncertainties. Furthermore, we compare the models of the nucleon-nucleus interactions in water and find that the binary cascade model and the Liège intranuclear cascade model provide a somewhat better fit to the observed data than the Bertini cascade model. Since the atmospheric neutrino-oxygen NCQE reactions are one of the main backgrounds in the search for diffuse supernova neutrino background (DSNB), these new results will contribute to future studies—and the potential discovery—of the DSNB in SK. Measurement of the cross section for $\text{t}\bar{\text{t}}$ production with additional jets and b jets in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV

Measurements of the cross section for the production of top quark pairs in association with a pair of jets from bottom quarks $ \left({\sigma}_{\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}\mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}}}\right) $ and in association with a pair of jets from quarks of any flavor or gluons $ \left({\sigma}_{\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}\mathrm{jj}}\right) $ and their ratio are presented. The data were collected in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV by the CMS experiment at the LHC in 2016 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{−1}$. The measurements are performed in a fiducial phase space and extrapolated to the full phase space, separately for the dilepton and lepton+jets channels, where lepton corresponds to either an electron or a muon. The results of the measurements in the fiducial phase space for the dilepton and lepton+jets channels, respectively, are $ {\sigma}_{\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}\mathrm{jj}} $ = 2.36±0.02 (stat)±0.20 (syst) pb and 31.0±0.2 (stat)±2.9 (syst) pb, and for the cross section ratio 0.017 ± 0.001 (stat) ± 0.001 (syst) and 0.020 ± 0.001 (stat) ± 0.001 (syst). The values of $ {\sigma}_{\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}\mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}}} $ are determined from the product of the $ {\sigma}_{\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}}\mathrm{jj}} $ and the cross section ratio, obtaining, respectively, 0.040±0.002 (stat)±0.005 (syst) pb and 0.62±0.03 (stat)±0.07 (syst) pb. These measurements are the most precise to date and are consistent, within the uncertainties, with the standard model expectations obtained using a matrix element calculation at next-to-leading order in quantum chromodynamics matched to a parton shower.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Inclusive and differential cross section measurements of single top quark production in association with a Z boson in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

Inclusive and differential cross sections of single top quark production in association with a Z boson are measured in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb - 1 recorded by the CMS experiment. Events are selected based on the presence of three leptons, electrons or muons, associated with leptonic Z boson and top quark decays. The measurement yields an inclusive cross section of \( {87.9}_{-7.3}^{+7.5}{\left(\mathrm{stat}\right)}_{-6.0}^{+7.3}\left(\mathrm{syst}\right) \) fb for a dilepton invariant mass greater than 30 GeV, in agreement with standard model (SM) calculations and represents the most precise determination to date. The ratio between the cross sections for the top quark and the top antiquark production in association with a Z boson is measured as \( {2.37}_{-0.42}^{+0.56}{\left(\mathrm{stat}\right)}_{-0.13}^{+0.27}\left(\mathrm{syst}\right) \) . Differential measurements at parton and particle levels are performed for the first time. Several kinematic observables are considered to study the modeling of the process. Results are compared to theoretical predictions with different assumptions on the source of the initial-state b quark and found to be in agreement, within the uncertainties. Additionally, the spin asymmetry, which is sensitive to the top quark polarization, is determined from the differential distribution of the polarization angle at parton level to be 0 . 54 ± 0 . 16 (stat) ± 0 . 06 (syst), in agreement with SM predictions.

Photonuclear cross sections for the 197 Au ⁢(𝛾, 𝑝⁢𝑛)⁢ 195⁢𝑚 Pt reaction near threshold

Platinum radioisotopes are of growing interest for targeted cancer therapy and diagnostic imaging because their decay delivers highly localized radiation doses in tissue, herewith enabling precise DNA damage through Auger-electron emission. Developing production technologies that provide platinum isotopes with high specific activity is essential in radioisotope therapy. Photonuclear reactions on stable nuclei offer a viable accelerator-based route for isotope production when supported by reliable cross-section data. We report photonuclear cross-section measurements for the 197 Au(γ, pn) 195m Pt reaction at incident γ-ray energies of 27, 29, and 31 MeV using the activation method. The measurements were performed by irradiating a stack of concentric-ring gold targets with a quasi-monoenergetic γ-ray beam provided by the High Intensity Gamma-ray Source (HI γS). The induced 195m Pt activity was quantified using off-line γ-ray spectroscopy. These data provide the first experimental constraints on the 197 Au(γ, pn) 195m Pt cross section in the near-threshold region. Furthermore, the comparison of the measured excitation function to PHITS and TALYS calculations indicates that the reaction becomes measurable only near 30 MeV and that substantially higher bremsstrahlung end-point energies are required for practically meaningful production.

Studies of the dependence of the microwave radar cross section on ocean surface variables during the FASINEX experiment

The ability of theoretical radar cross section (RCS) models to predict the absolute magnitude of the ocean radar cross section under a wide variety of sea and atmospheric conditions was studied using experimental data from the FASINEX Experiment. This consists of RCS data from a Ku-band scatterometer mounted on an aircraft (10 separate flights were conducted), a wide variety of atmospheric measurements (including stress) and sea conditions. Theoretical models are tested. Where discrepancies are observed, revisions are hypothesized and evaluated.

Reduced backscattering cross section (Sigma degree) data from the Skylab S-193 radar altimeter

Backscattering cross section per unit scattering area data, reduced from measurements made by the Skylab S-193 radar altimeter over the ocean surface are presented. Descriptions of the altimeter are given where applicable to the measurement process. Analytical solutions are obtained for the flat surface impulse response for the case of a nonsymmetrical antenna pattern. Formulations are developed for converting altimeter AGC outputs into values for the backscattering cross section. Reduced data are presented for Missions SL-2, 3 and 4 for all modes of the altimeter where sufficient calibration existed. The problem of interpreting land scatter data is also discussed. Finally, a comprehensive error analysis of the measurement is presented and worst case random and bias errors are estimated.

Differential cross section for positronium formation in positron-atomic-hydrogen collisions

The differential cross section for positronium formation in its ground state due to collision of a positron and a hydrogen atom is obtained on the basis of the combination of the L = 0 and 1 (L is the angular momentum quantum number) partial wave amplitudes with the L not less than 2 Born amplitudes. Minima at the scattering angles of 57 and 51 degrees were found for positron energies of 0.64 and 0.75 Ry. Total cross sections for positronium formation at low and intermediate impact energies are presented.

Measurement of the Z boson differential production cross section using its invisible decay mode (Z$\nu\bar{\nu}$) in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=$ 13 TeV

Measurements of the total and differential fiducial cross sections for the Z boson decaying into two neutrinos are presented at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data were collected by the CMS detector in 2016 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$. In these measurements, events are selected containing an imbalance in transverse momentum and one or more energetic jets. The fiducial differential cross section is measured as a function of the Z boson transverse momentum. The results are combined with a previous measurement of charged-lepton decays of the Z boson. The measured total fiducial cross section for events with Z boson transverse momentum greater than 200 GeV is $ {3000}_{-170}^{+180} $ fb.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Measurements of inclusive and differential cross sections for the Higgs boson production and decay to four-leptons in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

Measurements of the inclusive and differential fiducial cross sections for the Higgs boson production in the H → ZZ → 4ℓ (ℓ = e, μ) decay channel are presented. The results are obtained from the analysis of proton-proton collision data recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{−1}$. The measured inclusive fiducial cross section is 2.73 ± 0.26 fb, in agreement with the standard model expectation of 2.86 ± 0.1 fb. Differential cross sections are measured as a function of several kinematic observables sensitive to the Higgs boson production and decay to four leptons. A set of double-differential measurements is also performed, yielding a comprehensive characterization of the four leptons final state. Constraints on the Higgs boson trilinear coupling and on the bottom and charm quark coupling modifiers are derived from its transverse momentum distribution. All results are consistent with theoretical predictions from the standard model.

Measurements of effective actinides neutron capture cross sections in a cadmium-filtered epithermal neutron spectrum

In this work, a total of 20 actinide samples were irradiated in the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) at Idaho National Laboratory (INL): 233 U (1), 235 U (1), 236 U (1), 238 U (1), 237 Np (2), 239 Pu (1), 240 Pu (1), 242 Pu (2), 244 Pu (2), 241 Am (2), 243 Am (2), 244 Cm (2), and 248 Cm (2). The samples were loaded in a basket containing a 1.1-mm thick cadmium filter. The presence of the filter drastically changes the neutron spectrum in the samples and accentuates the reaction rates in the resonance region. Isotopic ratios were determined using Multi-Collector Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS) that allowed inferring effective capture cross sections. Detailed best-estimate MCNP models of the experiment using ENDF/B-VII.0 nuclear data were developed to calculate the effective neutron cross sections and, subsequently, compare them with the cross sections inferred from experimental results.
