Exact chiral symmetry with quantum signal processing

We give a quantum signal processing (QSP) algorithm for the overlap fermion Hamiltonian which preserves the Ginsparg-Wilson relation up to a controllable error $ε_e$. Quantum simulations of Dirac fermions with exact chiral symmetry are thus nearly free: applying the overlap Hamiltonian costs only a factor logarithmic in $ε_e$ more than the Wilson-Dirac Hamiltonian. Comparing to domain-wall fermions, a mild overhead is found in circuit complexity while reducing qubit costs. We show how QSP effectively constructs an extra dimension when simulating the overlap operator, illustrating that the scaling of quantum algorithms reflects the deeper physics of overlap fermions arising at the boundary of domain-wall fermions.

Fabrication of Arrays of Topological Solitons in Patterned Chiral Liquid Crystals for Real-Time Observation of Morphogenesis

Topological solitons have knotted continuous field configurations embedded in a uniform background, and occur in cosmology, biology, and electromagnetism. However, real-time observation of their morphogenesis and dynamics is still challenging because their size and timescale are enormously large or tiny. Liquid crystal (LC) structures are promising candidates for a model-system to study the morphogenesis of topological solitons, enabling direct visualization due to the proper size and timescale. We report a new way is found to rationalize the real-time observation of the generation and transformation of topological solitons using cholesteric LCs confined in patterned substrates. The experimental demonstration shows the topologically protected structures arise via the transformation of topological defects. Numerical modeling based on minimization of free energy closely reconstructs the experimental findings. The fundamental insights obtained from the direct observations pose new theoretical challenges in understanding the morphogenesis of different types of topological solitons within a broad range of scales.

Transport and optical properties of the chiral semiconductor Ag 3 AuSe 2

Previous band structure calculations predicted Ag 3 AuSe 2 to be a semiconductor with a band gap of approximately 1 eV. Here, we report single crystal growth of Ag 3 AuSe 2 and its transport and optical properties. Single crystals of Ag 3 AuSe 2 were synthesized by slow-cooling from the melt, and grain sizes were confirmed to be greater than 2 mm using electron backscatter diffraction. Optical and transport measurements reveal that Ag 3 AuSe 2 is a highly resistive semiconductor with a band gap and activation energy around 0.3 eV. Our first-principles calculations show that the experimentally determined band gap lies between the predicted band gaps from GGA and hybrid functionals. We predict band inversion to be possible by applying tensile strain. The sensitivity of the gap to Ag/Au ordering, chemical substitution, and heat treatment merit further investigation.
