Helical versus collinear antiferromagnetic order tuned by magnetic anisotropy in polar and chiral (Ni,Mn) 3 TeO 6

In this work, polar and chiral Ni 3 TeO 6 was found to exhibit a colossal magnetoelectric (ME) effect associated with collinear antiferromagnetic order. We have investigated the evolution of its magnetic state with the substitution of the Ni 2+ spins by isotropic Mn 2+ spins, namely (Ni, Mn) 3 TeO 6 (NMTO). The ground state of NMTO maintains an Ising nature, but a new phase with XY-type magnetic anisotropy is discovered at an intermediate temperature range. Neutron powder diffraction experiments reveal that (1) Mn ions tend to occupy a specific transition-metal site, consistent with the first-principle calculation, and (2) the intermediate phase is an incommensurate (IC) helical magnetic state propagating along the $\textit{c}$ axis with $\vec q_{\text{IC}}$ = (0, 0, 1.5 ± δ). We also found that the balance between these two magnetic states can be readily manipulated with magnetic fields, which results in significant ME effects. This selective site occupancy of NMTO allows for a unique competition between collinear and helical magnetic structures with minimal chemical disorder. Thus, NMTO serves as a model system to study site-specific chemical control of noncollinear magnetism and ME coupling.

Differences in the resistive and thermodynamic properties of the single crystalline chiral superconductor candidate SrPtAs

The locally noncentrosymmetric superconductor SrPtAs is proposed to host a topological chiral d-wave state, but experimental reports have been limited to polycrystalline samples. Here we report the synthesis of single crystalline SrPtAs grown from Pb flux. SrPtAs crystallizes in the hexagonal space group P⁢6 3 /mmc with lattice parameters a=4.2445⁢(4) Å and c=8.9513⁢(18) Å. Additionally, magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements reveal a superconducting transition at T c ~2.2 K, in agreement with previous reports on polycrystalline samples. Surprisingly, heat capacity data show only a small bulk transition at 0.7 K. We discuss the possible origins of the discrepancy between the various measurements.

Generation and control of nonlocal chiral currents in graphene superlattices by orbital Hall effect

Graphene-based superlattices offer a unique materials playground to exploit and control a higher number of electronic degrees of freedom, such as charge, spin, or valley for disruptive technologies. Recently, orbital effects, emerging in multivalley band structures lacking inversion symmetry, have been discussed as possible mechanisms for developing . Here, we report nonlocal transport measurements in small gap hBN/graphene/hBN moiré superlattices which reveal very strong magnetic field-induced chiral response which is stable up to sizable temperatures. The measured sign dependence of the nonlocal signal with respect to the magnetic field orientation clearly indicates the manifestation of emerging orbital magnetic moments. The interpretation of experimental data is well supported by numerical simulations, and the reported phenomenon stands as a formidable way of manipulation of the transverse flow of orbital information that could enable the design of orbitronic devices. Upper limit on the chiral magnetic effect in isobar collisions at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider

The chiral magnetic effect (CME) is a phenomenon that arises from the QCD anomaly in the presence of an external magnetic field. The experimental search for its evidence has been one of the key goals of the physics program of the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider. The STAR Collaboration has previously presented the results of a blind analysis of isobar collisions ( Ru 44 96 + Ru 44 96 , Zr 40 96 + Zr 40 96 ) in the search for the CME. The isobar ratio ( Y ) of CME-sensitive observable, charge separation scaled by elliptic anisotropy, is close to but systematically larger than the inverse multiplicity ratio, the naive background baseline. This indicates the potential existence of a CME signal and the presence of remaining nonflow background due to two- and three-particle correlations, which are different between the isobars. In this postblind analysis, we estimate the contributions from those nonflow correlations as a background baseline to Y , utilizing the isobar data as well as Heavy Ion Jet Interaction Generator simulations. This baseline is found consistent with the isobar ratio measurement, and an upper limit of 10% at 95% confidence level is extracted for the CME fraction in the charge separation measurement in isobar collisions at s NN = 200 GeV. Topological Rigidity and Non-Abelian Defect Junctions in Chiral Nematic Systems with Effective Biaxial Symmetry

We study topologically stable defect structures in systems where the defect line classification in three dimensions and associated algebra of interactions (the fundamental group) are governed by the non-Abelian eight-element group, the quaternions 𝑄 8 . The non-Abelian character of the defect algebra leads to a topological rigidity of bound defect pairs, and trivalent junctions which are the building blocks of multijunction trivalent networks. We realize such structures in laboratory chiral nematics and analyze their behavior analytically, along with numerical modeling.

Simulating Dynamical Phases of Chiral p + i p Superconductors with a Trapped ion Magnet

Two-dimensional p + ip superconductors and superfluids are systems that feature chiral behavior emerging from the Cooper pairing of electrons or neutral fermionic atoms with nonzero angular momentum. Their realization has been a longstanding goal because they offer great potential utility for quantum computation and memory. However, they have so far eluded experimental observation both in solid-state systems as well as in ultracold quantum gases. Here, we propose to leverage the tremendous control offered by rotating two-dimensional trapped-ion crystals in a Penning trap to simulate the dynamical phases of two-dimensional p + ip superfluids. This is accomplished by mapping the presence or absence of a Cooper pair into an effective spin-1/2 system encoded in the ions’ electronic levels. We show how to infer the topological properties of the dynamical phases, and discuss the role of beyond mean-field corrections. More broadly, our work opens the door to use trapped-ion systems to explore exotic models of topological superconductivity and also paves the way to generate and manipulate skyrmionic spin textures in these platforms.

Exact results in softly broken supersymmetric chiral gauge theories with flavor

We present exact results in softly broken supersymmetric SU⁡(𝑁 𝐶 ) chiral gauge theories with charged fermions in one antisymmetric, 𝑁 𝐹 fundamental, and 𝑁 𝐶 + 𝑁 𝐹 − 4 antifundamental representations. We achieve this by considering the supersymmetric version of these theories and utilizing anomaly mediated supersymmetry breaking at a scale 𝑚 ≪ Λ to generate a vacuum. The connection to nonsupersymmetric theories is then conjectured in the limit 𝑚 → ∞. For odd 𝑁 𝐶 , we determine the massless fermions and unbroken global symmetries in the infrared. For even 𝑁 𝐶 , we find global symmetries are nonanomalous and no massless fermions. In all cases, the symmetry breaking patterns differ from what the tumbling hypothesis would suggest.

Competing magnetic phases and fluctuation-driven scalar spin chirality in the kagome metal YMn 6 Sn 6

Identification, understanding, and manipulation of novel magnetic textures are essential for the discovery of new quantum materials for future spin-based electronic devices. In particular, materials that manifest a large response to external stimuli such as a magnetic field are subject to intense investigation. Here, we study the kagome-net magnet YMn 6 Sn 6 by magnetometry, transport, and neutron diffraction measurements combined with first-principles calculations. We identify a number of nontrivial magnetic phases, explain their microscopic nature, and demonstrate that one of them hosts a large topological Hall effect (THE). We propose a previously unidentified fluctuation-driven mechanism, which leads to the THE at elevated temperatures. This interesting physics comes from parametrically frustrated interplanar exchange interactions that trigger strong magnetic fluctuations. Our results pave a path to chiral spin textures, promising for novel spintronics.

The importance of few-nucleon forces in chiral effective field theory

We study the importance of few-nucleon forces in chiral effective field theory for describing many-nucleon systems. A combinatorial argument suggests that three-nucleon forces-which are conventionally regarded as next-to-next-to-leading order-should accompany the two-nucleon force already at leading order (LO) starting with mass number $A$ ≃10–20. We find that this promotion enables the first realistic description of the 16 O ground state based on a renormalization-group-invariant LO interaction. We also performed coupled-cluster calculations of the equation of state for symmetric nuclear matter and our results indicate that LO four-nucleon forces could play a crucial role for describing heavy-mass nuclei. In conclusion, the enhancement mechanism we found is very general and could be important also in other many-body problems.

Sphaleron transition rates and the chiral magnetic effect

The chiral magnetic effect is a novel quantum phenomenon proposed for high-energy nuclear collisions but which has yet to be observed. We quantify the axial charge relaxation time, due to sphalerons, which enters in simulations of this effect. An extrapolation of weak coupling calculations of the sphaleron rate yields rather different relaxation times than strong coupling AdS/CFT calculations. The AdS/CFT relaxation time is the larger one of the two by an order of magnitude, but the weak coupling relaxation time may not be reliable because it is only marginally bigger than the microscopic thermalization time. The role of quark masses has yet to be accurately assessed.

An overview of new measurements of flow, chirality and vorticity from STAR experiment

In relativistic heavy-ion collisions, the properties of quark–gluon plasma (QGP) and complex dynamics of multi-scale processes in Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) are studied by analyzing the final state produced particles in a variety of different ways. In these proceedings, we present an overview of new detailed measurements of flow, chirality and vorticity by the STAR experiment at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Furthermore, STAR’s future opportunities for the precision measurements on small systems, fixed-target (FXT) mode, and Beam Energy Scan (BES-II) program are discussed.

Enhancement of chiral edge currents in ($d$+1)-dimensional atomic Mott-band hybrid insulators

We consider the effect of a local interatomic repulsion on synthetic heterostructures where a discrete synthetic dimension is created by Raman processes on top of SU(N) S U ( N ) -symmetric two-dimensional lattice systems. At a filling of one fermion per site, increasing the interaction strength, the system is driven towards a Mott state which is adiabatically connected to a band insulator. The chiral currents associated with the synthetic magnetic field increase all the way to the Mott transition, where they reach the maximum value, and they remain finite in the whole insulating state. The transition towards the Mott-band insulator is associated with the opening of a gap within the low-energy quasiparticle peak, while a mean-field picture is recovered deep in the insulating state.

Higher-form symmetry and chiral transport in real-time Abelian lattice gauge theory

We study classical lattice simulations of theories of electrodynamics coupled to charged matter at finite temperature, interpreting them using the higher-form symmetry formulation of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). We compute transport coefficients using classical Kubo formulas on the lattice and show that the properties of the simulated plasma are in complete agreement with the predictions from effective field theories. In particular, the higher-form formulation allows us to understand from hydrodynamic considerations the relaxation rate of axial charge in the chiral plasma observed in previous simulations. A key point is that the resistivity of the plasma – defined in terms of Kubo formulas for the electric field in the 1-form formulation of MHD – remains a well-defined and predictive quantity at strong electromagnetic coupling. However, the Kubo formulas used to define the conventional conductivity vanish at low frequencies due to electrodynamic fluctuations, and thus the concept of the conductivity of a gauged electric current must be interpreted with care.

Phenomenological Chiral Perturbation Theory for Event Generators

Understanding neutrino induced single pion production off of nucleons is crucial for accelerator-based neutrino oscillation experiments. To this end, we use chiral perturbation theory to determine the forms of meson and baryon interactions and then modify the vertices using form factors. We implement this single pion production model in an event generator pipeline that will be available to the wider community.
