Probing High-Temperature Amine Chemistry: Is the Reaction NH 3 + NH 2 ⇌ N 2 H 3 + H 2 Important?

The reaction NH 3 + NH 2 ⇌ N 2 H 3 + H 2 (R1) has been identified as a key step to explain experimental results for pyrolysis and oxidation of ammonia. However, no direct experimental or theoretical evidence for the reaction has been reported. In the present work, the reaction was studied by ab initio theory and by reinterpretation of experimental data. We could not locate a transition state for R1 occurring as a direct process, but alternative mechanisms yielded an upper bound to k 1 of 1.5 × 10 13 exp(–58.9 kcal mol –1 /RT) cm 3 mol –1 s –1 over 1000–2500 K, several orders of magnitude lower than values applied in modeling. Consistent with the theoretical work, re-evaluation of NH 3 pyrolysis data supported a very low value of k 1 . However, this finding opens up a novel unresolved issue. Current kinetic models cannot capture the NH 3 oxidation behavior in a number of laminar flow reactor and jet-stirred reactor experiments without adopting an improbably high value for k 1 . Furthermore, important oxidation steps might be underestimated or missing from mechanisms.

SOX2-driven enhancer landscape defines the transcriptional architecture of retinogenesis

Retinal neurogenesis is mediated by the coordinated activities of a complex gene regulatory network (GRN) of transcription factors (TFs) in multipotent retinal progenitor cells (RPCs). How this GRN mechanistically guides neural competence remains poorly understood. In this study, we present integrated transcriptional, genetic and genomic analyses to uncover the regulatory mechanisms of SOX2, a key factor in establishing neural identity in RPCs. We show that SOX2 is preferentially enriched in the RPC-specific enhancer landscape associated with essential regulators of retinogenesis. Disruption of SOX2 expression impairs retinogenesis, marked by a selective loss of enhancer activity near genes essential for RPC proliferation and lineage specification. We identified the RPC transcription factor VSX2 as a binding partner for SOX2 and, together, SOX2 and VSX2 co-target a core, retina-specific chromatin repertoire characterized by enhanced TF binding and robust chromatin accessibility. This cooperative binding establishes a shared SOX2-VSX2 transcriptional code that promotes the expression of crucial regulators of neurogenesis while repressing the acquisition of alternative lineage cell fate. Our data illuminate fundamental biological insights on how transcription factors act in concert to drive chromatin-based genetic programs underlying retinal neural identity.

A Process for Converting Corn Bran to Furfural without Mineral Acids

Furfural is a bio-derived industrial chemical that has been identified as a platform chemical for the production of renewable fuels and chemicals. Currently, domestic feedstock and processing costs are high, so United States-based furfural production is not competative on the global market. Furthermore, furfural production costs must be much less than the current market price if it is to be competative platform for bio fuels and chemicals. An alternative low-cost feedstock for furfural is corn bran from a corn ethanol process. We have proposed a new process for producing furfural from corn bran that consumes no mineral acids. The high hemicellulose content of corn bran reduces capital and operating costs. Eliminating mineral acids reduces chemical consumption and makes the residual solids suitable for consumption as animal feed. The combination of a low cost source of hemicellulose and high valued residue could make the proposed process more economical than current processes based on corncobs.

Liquid Air Combined Cycle TM for Power and Storage

Liquid Air Combined Cycle (LACC) is a hybrid liquid air energy storage (LAES) system combining energy storage with a combustion turbine to enable large-scale, long-duration energy storage (LDES) while reducing fuel intensity compared to the current state-of-the-art. The LACC technical approach employs proven equipment (cryogenic refrigeration, storage, tanks, pumps, gas turbines, exhaust heat recovery equipment, and turbines) to limit technical risk to a novel organic Rankine cycle (ORC), which was evaluated during this project and found to be feasible. Moreover, LACC storage is safe and relatively compact, to facilitate siting close to loads and within metropolitan regions. The air storage medium is freely available and eliminates supply chain constraints. LACC uses cryogenic air as a storage medium and a gas turbine as the source of heat to drive the discharge process. LACC is distinguished from other LAES technologies by several factors. The charge and discharge processes are decoupled so that cryogenic liquid air is the only storage medium. Other systems also store the higher temperature thermal energy from the liquefaction process in an additional medium. Subsequently, LACC focuses on maximization of the discharge energy and power. LACC also permits the use of commercially available cryogenic refrigeration and storage technologies to increase competition. This project identified product requirements to support market entry and commercialization of the LACC in modular units of approximately 117 MW, each drawing liquid air from customary cryogenic storage tanks capable of storing 75 GWh of dispatchable energy, more than pumped storage hydro or compressed air energy storage technologies. An economic analysis identified the specific liquid air consumption (quantity of liquid air per unit of discharge energy) as a critical parameter. Minimizing the air consumption reduces the specific capital cost ($\$ $/kW) for charging and discharging equipment by reducing the size of piping and turbomachinery. Likewise, the specific cost of energy capacity ($\$ $/kWh) is reduced by increasing the energy deliverable from a given size tank. The cycle was analyzed to identify the optimal equipment selection and operating conditions, which in turn were combined with quotes and cost estimates to calculate the cost of energy from an LACC system. A substantial effort was focused on the ORC, which draws low-temperature heat from the gas turbine exhaust and condenses at low temperature using the cryogenic liquid air as a heat sink. Alternative turbomachinery arrangements were evaluated for feasibility and cost. A technology maturation plan lays out a low-risk approach to development of the novel ORC components and demonstration of LACC technology at pilot scale.

Validation of strongly coupled geomechanics and gas hydrate reservoir simulation with multiscale laboratory tests

In this work, we validate a coupled flow-geomechanics simulator for gas hydrate deposits, named T+M AM , performing two meter-scale laboratory experiments of gas hydrates for production by depressurization, replicating the gas hydrate deposit in the Ulleung Basin, East Sea, South Korea. The first experiment with a sand-only specimen is a 1D 1 m-scale depressurization test based on the excess gas method, which represents the grain coating hydrate growth. On the other hand, the second is a 3D 1.5 m-scale test with the excess water method for a sand-mud alternating layer system, representing the pore filling hydrate growth. We measure production and displacement at the top with different depressurization levels. In particular, the 3D test exhibits high coupling strength of substantial deformation induced by incompressibility of water and high deformability of the specimen. For validation, we match pressure, flow rate, and displacement between the experimental data and numerical results. Thus, we identify that T+M AM is a reliable simulator, which can be applied to fields in both permafrost and deep oceanic hydrate deposits of strongly coupled flow and geomechanics systems. This validation also implies that other coupled simulators based on the same coupling formulation as T+M AM can be validated when individual flow and geomechanics simulators are stable and reliable.

Evaluating Material Design Principles for Calcium-Ion Mobility in Intercalation Cathodes

Multivalent-ion batteries offer an alternative to Li-based technologies, with the potential for greater sustainability, improved safety, and higher energy density, primarily due to their rechargeable system featuring a passivating metal anode. Although a system based on the Ca 2+ /Ca couple is particularly attractive given the low electrochemical plating potential of Ca 2+ , the remaining challenge for a viable rechargeable Ca battery is to identify Ca cathodes with fast ion transport. In this work, a high-throughput computational pipeline is adapted to (1) discover novel Ca cathodes in a largely unexplored space of empty intercalation hosts and (2) develop material design rules for Ca-ion mobility. One candidate from the screening, W 2 O 3 (PO 4 ) 2 , is confirmed to have a low Nudged Elastic Band (NEB) barrier of 168 meV within a one-dimensional (1D) ion percolation topology. This candidate is subsequently synthesized and electrochemically tested, achieving reversible Ca cycling with a capacity of 25 mA h/g. To further accelerate the screening for promising Ca intercalation electrodes, machine learning (ML) Random Forest (RF) and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGB) classification models are created with local environment descriptors based on a large, structurally and chemically diverse dataset of minimum energy pathways, spanning over 5,000 density functional theory (DFT) site energy calculations. Accuracies of 92% are achieved, material design metrics are quantified, ML force-fields are leveraged in an accelerated iteration of the screening, and a total of 27 novel Ca cathode materials are highlighted for further investigation.

Magnetic correlations and pairing tendencies of the hybrid stacking nickelate superlattice La 7 Ni 5 O 17 (La 3 ⁢Ni 2 ⁢O 7 /La 4 Ni 3 ⁢O 10 ) under pressure

Motivated by the recent rapid progress in high-𝑇 𝑐 nickelate superconductors, we comprehensively study the physical properties of the alternating bilayer trilayer stacking nickelate La 7 ⁢Ni 5 ⁢O 17 . The high-symmetry phase of this material, without the tilting of oxygen octahedra, is not stable at ambient conditions but becomes stable under high pressure, where a small hole pocket 𝛾 0 , composed of the 𝑑 3⁢𝑧 2 −𝑟 2 states in the trilayer sublattice, appears. Here, this pocket was identified in our previous work for trilayer La 4 ⁢Ni 3 ⁢O 10 as important to develop superconductivity. Moreover, using random-phase approximation calculations, we find a leading 𝑠 ± pairing state for the high-symmetry phase under pressure with similar pairing strength as that obtained previously for the bilayer La 3⁢ Ni 2 ⁢O 7 compound, suggesting a similar or higher superconducting transition temperature 𝑇 𝑐 , at the random-phase approximation level. In addition, we find that the dominant magnetic fluctuations in the system driving this pairing state have antiferromagnetic structure both in-plane and between the planes of the top and bottom trilayer and bilayer sublattices, while the middle trilayer is magnetically decoupled.

ByzSec — A Multi-layered Byzantine Resilient Architecture for Bulk Power System Protective Relays

Reliability, selectivity, and sensitivity are the fundamental attributes of any protection system, acting as the main drivers in the selection of schemes, and equipment. In high-voltage systems, microprocessor-based relays represent the industry’s preferred solution, providing engineers with a vast array of benefits. However, they remain vulnerable to cybersecurity events that may compromise their functionality. To help mitigate against potential cybersecurity risks, this paper presents a fault-tolerant, Byzantine Resilient (BR) architecture that significantly increases the cybersecurity attributes of a protection system while minimizing the amount of performance impacts and integration overheads introduced. The solution relies on an array of independent relays that utilize robust consensus methods (based on Spire [1], [2]) to ensure correct system behavior is achieved even when a relay has been compromised. Furthermore, the solution has been complemented with a custom-built Situational Awareness engine that can be used to detect and identify potential threats. The implemented solution has been developed in consultation with three hardware vendors and has been tested to comply with the performance requirements of a 345kV differential protection scheme (87T). The results indicate that the proposed architecture is a comprehensive solution that: supports the strict correctness and performance requirements of the bulk power grid while providing a cost-effective alternative that offers a seamless, long-term solution.

Oilwell Conversion (Well API 121913310501) to Geothermal Heat Storage Well for Flexible Electricity Storage

Geothermal growth is limited by a lack of geographically dispersed high-temperature thermal resources and high initial upfront investment in characterization and well construction. This project intended to address the challenges of energy supply intermittency and enhance grid resilience, reliability, and energy security by storing energy provided from currently available renewable resources in the subsurface to harvest it a later time during at-peak energy demand. This project intended to improve geothermal adoption, reduce initial project risk, and improve price competitiveness through utilizing existing oil and gas infrastructure such as non-productive wells, non-economic fields, dry holes, and orphaned wells. The project also intended to address the lack of geographically dispersed thermal resources and enhance grid resilience, reliability, and energy security by introducing an economical method for storing energy from currently available renewable resources in the subsurface for usage during at-peak energy demand. During this research, the project furthered the understanding of the feasibility of utilizing abandoned oil and gas wells as geothermal heat storage wells. The project team investigated the heat storage and hydrogeological characteristics of subsurface reservoirs in the Illinois Basin to evaluate their response to heat injection for determining the evolution of temperature profiles and heat losses over time using existing and available data sets. The project team then performed modeling and simulation to evaluate the heat losses of returning fluids during heat extraction. The outputs were used to select an optimal candidate reservoir and location in Southern Illinois. The team designed and performed a small-scale field test in an existing oil well to refine the model and to demonstrate the permitting and regulatory pathways necessary for the conversion of oil and gas assets to geothermal use. The field test also serves as a proof of concept and can guide the procedures for future research and implementation. Additionally, the project team, conducted initial market research and customer discovery to develop a go to market strategy for an Advanced Geothermal Energy Storage (AGES) system. The project team in this research also identified the parameters to be refined in future research, to improve the current go to market strategy economic model. To this end several subject matter experts were also identified to assist in future research with geothermal infrastructure setup, energy storage policy and law, energy storage market demand, potential siting based on demand etc. Future research will involve further sophistication of the site commercial modeling, implementing a larger-scale test, and further refinement of the thermodynamic modeling/simulation process. The output will be lifecycle costs and economics suitable for comparison to alternative approaches from a validated full-scale demonstration for venture capital investment into this technology. The project successfully demonstrated the ability to leverage existing oilfield infrastructure, permits, and land access and leasing agreements, to enable geothermal storage projects to come online faster and cheaper than a greenfield development could. This technology could allow for greater energy independence and security through long-term energy storage solutions. The longer duration allows for greater storage for renewables currently limited by hours-long storage durations of lithium-ion. The AGES system would support the growth of renewable energy farms, and provide greater opportunities for a cleaner energy infrastructure.
