ALDWP Operational Highlights 2021

The Weapons Pit production manufacturing team completed pit build 21-1 assembly operations on December 23, 2020. This build utilized all essential flow sheet steps and included the second -01 long tube cut off extension and welding activity. This is the best build produced in the MC4597-01 pit program to date. Final out-of-line operations, non-destructive evaluation, and radiography was completed during the week of January 4. Depending on the results from high energy radiography, this pit will be considered to be a candidate for CERT-02 and shipment to Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in support of pit certification. It is notable that this build was completed while concurrently making Plutonium (Pu) metal, producing additional castings, machining Pu parts for Build 22, completing disassembly of two pits, supporting Nightshade B Pu target characterization, and precision machining of Jasper certification base plates.

Home Energy Professionals Certifications ISO/IEC 17024: 2021 Policies and Procedures Manual

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) enlisted its National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to coordinate the development of a framework for new certifications in the weatherization and home performance industry. The Home Energy Professional certifications support DOE's Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) and the broader residential home performance industry through the credentialing process of defined job task analysis for energy auditors and quality control inspectors. The HEP certifications are not intended to supplant or infringe upon any existing industry-recognized credentials, however, the WAP and the home performance industry have utilized the advanced HEP certifications to promote quality work and standardized job task analysis since 2010. On an ongoing basis, NREL brings industry practitioners and subject matter experts together to develop, review, and revise the certification schemes in accordance with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO)/International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 17024 standard, "Conformity assessment - General requirements for bodies operating certification of persons" (ISO/IEC 17024). This handbook covers the policies and procedures for the process of developing, maintaining, and validating the certification schemes. Each policy and procedure includes the relevant ISO/IEC 17024 section at the beginning.

Experimental Procedure and Results for Contact Thermal Conductance Measurements performed during FY 2021

Weapons Test Engineering groups at LANL are responsible for testing and simulating weapon assemblies and subassemblies in support of qualification and certification of nuclear weapon systems. The complex nature of the assemblies themselves coupled with the loading environments, gives rise to low confidence and high uncertainties in the interpretation of both experimental and simulated results. In an effort to reduce these uncertainties, a project was started at LANL to perform focused and systematic experiments combined with simulations to increase confidence in both arenas. A key goal of the work performed under the Delivery Environments (DE) Testbeds to Reduce Uncertainties in Simulations and Tests TRUST program, focuses on identifying and minimizing sources of uncertainty associated with experimental and computational techniques. Specifically, with the above as motivation, a measurement procedure was developed by MST-8 to perform thermal conductivity measurements on cylinders of both similar and dissimilar metallic systems as a function of loading conditions and varying material interface morphologies between these components.

Examining Nuisance Aerosol Detections in Light of the Origin of the Screening Process (November 2021)

The evolution of philosophy and computations in the International Data Center (IDC) related to aerosol samples have had profound impacts on the number of recorded detections in the network since routine operations began in 2000. Key decisions from policymakers have been the list of triggering radionuclides, the scheme for categorizing these into interest levels 1-5, and an algorithm for determining when an anthropogenic isotope is seen so often that it is no longer interesting, known as the Exponential Weighted Moving Average (EWMA). These are described in the Operations Manual of the IDC. Key parameters that are controlled by the IDC but for which the IDC receives occasional input from policymakers include the constants in EWMA and the peak significance threshold for individual gamma rays, the latter of which directly leads to determination of the presence or absence of a radionuclide in a sample. There are also changes in computations which the IDC makes and informs policy makers about, such as changes in how background is computed, which could also affect the ease of detecting a peak – real or false. Rather than focus on the quantitative changes due to computation changes, this work records some thinking on how isotopes and peak significance levels were chosen, and the resulting detections seen over 18 years during the buildup of the International Monitoring System (IMS). These detections are considered on a global scale to try to determine the relative impact on monitoring, and in some cases, the nature of their existence. Repeated detections of 131I and 133I are the most troublesome, but they are not so frequent to be a major problem for the Verification Regime. These detections could probably be handled adequately using scientific methods currently under development for xenon backgrounds. It is also somewhat problematic that top-level analysis of aerosol backgrounds has not been reported previous to this. The steep increase in the rate of detections after 2016 are a concern, either in the actual backgrounds or from changes in the calculations methods used to generate the Reviewed Radionuclide Report (RRR.) Final conclusions of the authors are that the computational stability of the RRR is very important. With computational stability, changes can be usefully analyzed as being due to changes in radioactivity in Earth’s atmosphere This report is a distillation into text of a talk given in the Radionuclide Experts Group (RNEG) in Vienna during Working Group B (WGB) in February of 2019. This report does not directly contain any IDC data, only summaries by year, or by isotope, or by location. No specific IDC detection by time, location, or isotope is included.

2021 IC Project Report Viewgraph [Slides]

Here we show that cross-beam energy transfer (CBET) saturates through a resonance detuning that depends on the IAW phase velocity and that results from trapping-induced modifications to the ion distribution functions. For smaller phase velocities, the modifications to the distribution functions can rapidly thermalize in the presence of mid-Z ions, leading to a blueshift in the resonant frequency. For larger velocities, the modifications can persist, leading to a redshift in the resonant frequency.

Advancing coupled fire-atmosphere research with HIGRAD/FIRETEC (w20_firetec) (CY 2021 Institutional Computing Annual Progress Report) [Slides]

LANL’s HIGRAD and FIRETEC models were used in a multi-scale simulation framework to investigate impacts of small-scale fuel heterogeneities on large-scale Pyro-Cb formation. Forest structural diversity is found to increase canopy fire spread, and thus risk of tree mortality in FIRETEC simulations. Structural diversity is associated with an increase in ladder fuels, which facilitate fire spread into the canopy. Low-intensity fire burning in marginal conditions is highly sensitive to small perturbation in atmospheric turbulence. These results highlight predictive limitations of individual fire simulations, and emphasize the need for ensemble simulations, especially for low-intensity, prescribed fire.
