High contrast cathode ray tube

A layer of material is described, which contains fine grains of phosphor material stimulated by electrons to produce visible radiation. The layer, which also contains fine grains of cobalt oxide, is deposited on the glass screen of a cathode ray tube to provide high contrast, by absorbing most of the visible radiation which is directed to the layer through the screen, while not materially affecting the visible light which the phosphor material produces in response to the electron stimulation.

Radiation effects on contaminants from the outgassing of silastic 140 RTV

Exposure of the volatile condensable material (VCM) from Silastic 140 RTV adhesive sealant to 147. 0-nm radiation, simulating the space radiation environment in synchronous earth orbits, induces absorption of visible light by the VCM. This results in an increase in the absorptance of coated optical elements, such as solar cell cover glasses and second-surface mirrors for thermal control. A contaminant thickness of 0.1 micron or more could result in a change in solar absorptance of the second-surface mirrors from 0.06 to approximately 0.16 in a period of about 1.5 years in space. Calculations indicated that the VCM thickness would have to be less than approximately 0.005 micron to keep the change in solar absorptance 0.01 for a 3-year mission.

Measurement of relative cross sections for simultaneous ionization and excitation of the helium 4 2s and 4 2p states

The relative cross sections for simultaneous ionization and excitation of helium by 200-eV electrons into the 4 2s and 4 2p states were measured via a fast delayed coincidence technique. Results show good agreement with the relative cross sections for single electron excitation of helium and hydrogen. An application of the results of the measurement to the development of ultraviolet intensity standard is suggested. This technique involves the use of known branching ratios, a visible light flux reference, and the measured relative cross sections.

Circular polarization of sunlight reflected by clouds.

Measurements of circular polarization of visible light from planets have recently been reported. It is pointed out that the values measured for the circular polarization for Jupiter and Venus are of the magnitude expected for sunlight reflected by a cloudy planetary atmosphere. The variations of the sense of the polarization with phase angle and with location on the planetary disk are also consistent with expectations for reflection by clouds.

The optical polarization of Scorpius X-1.

The X-ray source Sco X-1 is known to have a slight linear polarization in visible light. An investigation was conducted to determine whether the origin of the polarization is intrinsic to the source or interstellar. No evidence could be found for unusual polarization properties in Sco X-1 that would point to an intrinsically polarized source, although this cannot be excluded. It is pointed out that the case for interstellar polarization would become very strong if stars in the immediate vicinity are found to be polarized with the same position angle.

Image formation in microwave holography

Microwave holograms are made without offset reference beam, but it has been found that Van der Lugt filter can be used to produce image offset. Also, filter permits "decoding" of holograms in contrast with usual practice of reconstructing visible-light analogs of original micro-wave wave fronts.

Circular polarimetry of fifteen interesting objects.

The results of a search are presented for circular polarization of visible light in 15 objects, including two eclipsing binaries, six magnetic Ap stars, three planetary nebulae, Hubble's Nebula, M87, Sirius, and the Orion A region. On the whole, the results were null, down to typical upper limits for q of 0.01 per cent. A complete description of the used photoelastic polarimeter is given, with special attention to the incidental linear-circular conversion.

Observing programs in solar physics during the 1973 ATM Skylab program.

Description of the Apollo Telescope Mount (ATM), a set of spaceborne X-ray, ultraviolet, and visible-light telescopes intended to implement the extensive series of solar observations representing one of the major tasks assigned to the three-man crews who will perform three (respectively 28-, 56-, and 56-day long) manned orbital flights in mid-1973, known collectively as the Skylab mission. The ATM capabilities, its principal scientific goals, and planned observing program are reviewed, along with the methods to be used for coordinating the observations with ground-based and other kinds of solar observations.

Broadband ultraviolet reflectance filters for space applications.

It is shown that a simple metal-dielectric-metal filter for broadband ultraviolet (BUV) reflectance control can provide a stable and effective means for reducing stray visible radiation in UV reflective optical systems. The application of such a filter in a BUV instrument resulted in a reduction of scattered visible light by at least an order of magnitude. The instrument has been in orbit for 2.5 year without loss of sensitivity or an increase in scattered light background.-

Study of the atmospheric conditions affecting infrared astronomical measurements at White Mountain, California

Measurements are described of atmospheric conditions affecting astronomical observations at White Mountain, California. Measurements were made at more than 1400 times spaced over more than 170 days at the Summit Laboratory and a small number of days at the Barcroft Laboratory. The recorded quantities were ten micron sky noise and precipitable water vapor, plus wet and dry bulb temperatures, wind speed and direction, brightness of the sky near the sun, fisheye lens photographs of the sky, description of cloud cover and other observable parameters, color photographs of air pollution astronomical seeing, and occasional determinations of the visible light brightness of the night sky. Measurements of some of these parameters have been made for over twenty years at the Barcroft and Crooked Creek Laboratories, and statistical analyses were made of them. These results and interpretations are given. The bulk of the collected data are statistically analyzed, and disposition of the detailed data is described. Most of the data are available in machine readable form. A detailed discussion of the techniques proposed for operation at White Mountain is given, showing how to cope with the mountain and climatic problems.

Design of an X-ray telescope system for an orbiting astronomical observatory

The design and construction is described of a package of X-ray telescopes launched in the NASA satellite Copernicus (OAO-3), which began stellar observations in September 1972. It contains three grazing incidence reflectors covering a range of wavelengths from 0.3 to 8 nm, and having a combined collecting area of 40.9 sq cm, with angular resolutions up to 1 minute of arc. This is believed to be the first satellite application of such reflectors in stellar X-ray astronomy. A collimated detector of wavelengths 0.1-0.3 nm has a 17.8 sq cm collecting area. A visible light star tracker detects package misalignment if this should occur.

Differential transmission of sunlight on Mars - Biological implications

A euphotic zone seems to exist at about 1 cm subsurface in the Martian epilith. At this depth, visible light is still intense enough to be utilized by conceivable photosynthetic organisms; but the germicidal ultraviolet intensities at the Martian surface have been reduced to values manageable by terrestrial life. Such euphotic zone organisms would experience moderately high Martian temperatures at equatorial latitudes and can be dispersed readily during global dust storms. During such storms the Martian euphotic zone may reach the surface. The aerosol content of the Martian atmosphere can be monitored by multiband single-line scans of the sun at large zenith angles by the Viking lander camera; and the postulated euphotic zone organisms can be searched for with the Viking lander sample arm and biology experiments.

Comet Kohoutek observations from Skylab

The original intent of the Skylab observations of comet Kohoutek, as stated by Operation Kohoutek, was to provide (1) long-term viewing, (2) near-perihelion viewing, (3) astronaut response, and (4) payload optimization, allowing Kohoutek to be monitored in the ultraviolet and visible-light ranges regardless of its angular separation from the sun. The preliminary results made available thus far indicate that through its man-aided flexibility and broad range of capabilities Skylab was indeed able to achieve this intent.

Effects of various runway lighting parameters upon the relation between runway visual range and visual range of centerline and edge lights in fog

Thirty six students and 54 commercial airline pilots were tested in the fog chamber to determine the effect of runway edge and centerline light intensity and spacing, fog density, ambient luminance level, and lateral and vertical offset distance of the subject from the runway's centerline upon horizontal visual range. These data were obtained to evaluate the adequacy of a balanced lighting system to provide maximum visual range in fog viewing both centerline and runway edge lights. The daytime system was compared against two other candidate lighting systems; the nighttime system was compared against other candidate lighting systems. The second objective was to determine if visual range is affected by lights between the subject and the farthestmost light visible through the fog. The third objective was to determine if college student subjects differ from commercial airline pilots in their horizontal visual range through fog. Two studies were conducted.
