Understanding Mass Transport in Copper Electrolyte-Based Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Copper redox shuttles, particularly [Cu(tmby) 2 ] 2+/1+ (tmby = bis(4,4',6,6'-tetramethyl-2,2'-bipyridine)), proved to be among the best electrolytes for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs), realizing higher power conversion efficiencies both under full sun and indoor illumination than conventional iodide/triiodide and cobalt electrolytes. Even though [Cu(tmby) 2 ] 2+/1+ renders a relatively higher performance, this metal complex is bulky and is limited by mass transport. Since the regeneration of the dye ground state by Cu I and the reaction of Cu II at the counter electrode are comparatively faster processes, the efficiency of DSC involving Cu I /Cu II electrolytes under relatively high light intensities is largely governed by the diffusion of Cu I /Cu II species. Understanding mass transport in these solar cells will enable further improvements in the performance of such copper-based DSCs. Here in the present study, the role of illumination intensity on the photogenerated current and its relationship to mass transport is evaluated using the best cosensitized dye (D35:XY1) and copper electrolyte ([Cu(tmby) 2 ] 2+/1+ ) combination.

Surface-Activated Corrosion in Tin–Lead Halide Perovskite Solar Cells

Mixed tin–lead halide perovskite solar cells have promising power conversion efficiencies, but long-term stability is still a challenge. Here, we examine the stability of a 60:40 tin–lead perovskite to better understand diminished device performance upon thermal treatment, both in ambient and inert atmosphere. Operando X-ray diffraction shows a stable bulk structure of the perovskite absorber, leading to the hypothesis that surface chemistry dominates the degradation mechanism. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals two new observations post-thermal annealing that accompany previously reported Sn 4+ evolution: (i) the formation of I 3 – intermediates preceding I 2 loss at the surface and (ii) evidence of under-coordinated tin and lead surface sites (Sn δ<2+ and Pb δ<2+ , respectively) in inert and ambient conditions. These two species indicate an activated corrosion (i.e., both oxidation and reduction) process at the surface as a possible chemical pathway for degradation, which is expected to be accelerated under operando voltage and light biases.

Solar PV and BESS Plant-Level Voltage Control and Interactions: Experiments and Analysis

In real world operation, low-frequency oscillations associated with plant-level voltage control of inverter-based resources (IBRs) have been a concern of grid operators. Here, this research aims to demonstrate and analyze the effect of plant-level voltage control on system stability and potential interactions among IBRs. The experiment results of a 13.2-kV system interconnected with two IBRs—a 1-MW battery energy storage system (BESS) and a 430-kW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant—are presented. Both 0.5-Hz and 3-Hz oscillations become visible at certain conditions. The phenomenon is further explained by use of a feedback system consisting of the plant-level droop control and the effect of reactive power or var injection on voltage. The main components of the block diagram are obtained via frequency scan measurements. The analysis offers an understanding of the main contributors and other influencing factors of the 3-Hz and 0.5-Hz modes. It also reveals the role of the volt-var droop gain, the low-pass filter time constant, and the system impedance in stability.

Community Planning for Solar: Conducting a Solar Resource and Infrastructure Assessment

This guide describes how to conduct a Solar Resource and Infrastructure Assessment. The guide is designed to assist community officials, volunteers, and regional planning agency staff in conducting a preliminary assessment for a municipality, community, or other jurisdiction, based primarily on a desktop analysis of existing documents and data. The guide provides a process that can be used to inventory and describe existing infrastructure, community needs, and resources from the perspective of solar development planning.

Evaluacion del potencial solar fotovoltaico en Brownfields y embalses de Puerto Rico: analisis y modelaje [Assessing the Solar Photovoltaic Potential in Puerto Rican Brownfields and Reservoirs: Analysis and Modeling] [Slides]

Fast Quasi-Static Time-Series Simulation for Accurate PV Inverter Semiconductor Fatigue Analysis with a Long-Term Solar Profile

Power system simulations with long-term data typically have large time steps varying from one second to a few minutes. However, for PV inverter semiconductors, the minimum thermal stress cycle occurs over the fundamental grid frequency (50 or 60 Hz). This requires the time step of the fatigue simulation to be around 100 µs. This small time step requires long computation times to process yearly power production profiles. This paper proposes a fast fatigue simulation for inverter semiconductors using the quasi-static time series (QSTS) simulation concept. The proposed simulation calculates the steady state of the semiconductor junction temperature by using a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT). The small thermal cycling during a switching period and even over the fundamental waveform is disregarded to further accelerate the simulation speed. The resulting time step of the fatigue simulation is 15 minutes, which is consistent with the solar dataset. The error of the proposed simulation is 0.16% compared to the fatigue simulation results using the complete thermal stress profile. A PV inverter that responds to a Transactive Energy System (TES) is simulated to demonstrate the use of the proposed fatigue simulation. The proposed simulation has the potential to co-simulate with system level simulation tools that also adopt the QSTS concept.
