The Oxidation State of Sulfur in Martian Apatite- Implications for Redox of Surficial Processes

Meteorites from Mars record fO2 values of ∆IW = -1 to +6.5 [1, 2]. This relatively large range in fO2 has been attributed to igneous processes like differentiation and assimilation, or sometimes to alteration [2, 3], modifying the range inherited from the Martian mantle, which is thought to be closer to the values recorded by lunar basalts (~∆IW -1 [e.g., 1]). Trace element compositions reveal that those Martian meteorites that are light Rare Earth Elements (LREE) enriched record higher fO2 values than those that are LREE-depleted [2]. Sulfur (S) has been used to track redox and alteration processes on Mars because it can be present in multiple redox states varying from S2- in magmatic sulfides to S6+ in sedimentary sulfate deposits and alteration products like jarosite [4, 5]. Apatite (Ca5(PO4)3(F,Cl,OH)) is found in many of the Martian meteorites as a late stage crystallizing mineral. It can incorporate both S^(2-) [6] or S^(6+) [7] or mixtures of both [7, 8] in its crystal structure, and it has been hypothesized that the relative proportions of S^(2-) and S^(6+) in apatite will depend on the prevailing fO2 in which it formed (along with P, T, and major element composition). Methods and systems for operating a redox flow battery system

A method of operating a redox flow battery, may include maintaining a positive electrode compartment pressure greater than a negative electrode compartment pressure, and maintaining a cross-over pressure less than a membrane break-through pressure, wherein the cross-over pressure equals the negative electrode compartment pressure subtracted from the positive electrode compartment pressure. In this way, ionic resistance across the separator can be maintained at a lower level by reducing gas bubbles trapped therein while reducing separator break-through, thereby increasing performance of the redox flow battery system.

Thermally sensitive ionic redox transistor

A thermally sensitive ionic redox transistor comprises a solid channel, a solid reservoir layer, and a solid electrolyte layer disposed between the channel and the reservoir layer. A conductance of the channel is varied by changing the concentration of ions such as oxygen vacancies in the channel layer. Ionic conductivity of the gate, electrolyte, and channel layers increase with increasing temperature. Ion or vacancy transport between the channel and the reservoir layer across the electrolyte layer occurs in response to applying a voltage between the channel and the reservoir layer when the device is heated to an elevated temperature. When the device is cooled below the elevated temperature, the ions are trapped in one or more of the layers because the materials lose their ionic conductivity. A state of the redox transistor can be read by measuring the conductance of the channel.

Recent Advances in Radiation-Induced Actinide Redox Chemistry

The actinide series boasts many unique physical and chemical features worthy of both fundamental and applied study. However, the chemical influence of their inherent radiation field is often overlooked, especially as we begin to explore the late actinides in more detail than ever possible before. From the perspective of used nuclear fuel reprocessing, the absorption of ionizing radiation induces the formation of a variety of transient and steady-state excited states, radicals, ions, and molecular degradation products, many of which are highly redox active and can lead to significant changes in a reprocessing solvent system’s physical and chemical properties. For example, radiolysis of the actinides can drive steady-state redox distributions and the formation of non-traditional oxidation states which can complicate their separation and recovery from fission products. This scenario is further exacerbated when complexation is taken into account. Consequently, a molecular-level understanding of radiation effects on the actinides over multiple time, distance, and material domains is essential for supporting innovation in used nuclear fuel reprocessing technologies. Attaining this knowledge necessitates a firm grasp of actinide radiation chemistry to develop predictive, mechanistic, multiscale models to support engineering efforts. Presented here are several recent studies that highlight recent advances in actinide radiation chemistry, in particular, the effect of actinide complexation on ligand reactivity towards radiation-induced transients.

Robust Method to Identify Groundwater Affected By Redox Conditions at Los Alamos National Laboratory Legacy Cleanup Site - 20497

To facilitate the mission of the Department of Energy's (DoE's) Environmental Management Program at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), a significant number of groundwater monitoring wells with depths ranging from 152-396 meter were completed for characterization and monitoring. Groundwater at Los Alamos tends to be oxygen saturated with very low concentrations of organic matter. Drilling fluids can introduce residual carbon causing an increase in microbial activity and local reducing conditions around the well, potentially impacting representativeness of groundwater data quality for redox sensitive constituents. We assert that the redox state of the wells can robustly be identified by aqueous solution concentrations of iron and manganese. An automated review process has been built into a computer-based data management system enabling an efficient screening process for identifying reducing conditions that are not caught using standard data-validation protocol, and ensures that important data quality issues are thoroughly identified and addressed in an efficient and timely manner. Thermally sensitive state change ionic redox transistor

A thermally sensitive ionic redox transistor comprises a channel, a reservoir layer, and an electrolyte layer disposed between the channel and the reservoir layer. A conductance of the channel is varied by changing concentration of ions in the channel layer. The electrolyte layer is configured to undergo a state change at a state transition temperature. Below the state transition temperature, ions in the electrolyte layer are substantially immobile. Above the state transition temperature, ions can move freely between the reservoir layer and the channel across the electrolyte layer in response to a voltage being applied between the channel and the reservoir layer. When the device is cooled below the state transition temperature or temperature range, the ions are trapped in one or more of the layers because the electrolyte layer loses its ionic conductivity. A state of the redox transistor can be read by measuring the conductance of the channel.

Unravelling the radiation-induced redox chemistry of plutonium ions in aqueous solution

Plutonium plays a critical role in nuclear fuel cycle technologies, but our understanding of its fundamental radiation-induced redox chemistry is limited. Changes in oxidation states affect the speciation and transport of plutonium ions in solution. For example, solvent extraction techniques used to separate and recover plutonium from used nuclear fuel rely on the selective formation, maintenance, and complexation of specific plutonium oxidation states. However, radiolytically generated radicals, ions, and molecules can drive the oxidation state distribution of plutonium ions far from equilibrium, ultimately changing the physical and chemical properties of the bulk system. These radiation-induced processes are inevitable due to the ionizing radiation fields generated by the radioactive decay of plutonium and its daughter nuclides. Therefore, mechanistically understanding how plutonium's various oxidation states respond to ionizing radiation is essential for predicting its behavior in solution. Here, we present significant advances in our understanding of radiation-induced plutonium redox chemistry by using time-resolved (electron pulse) and dose accumulation (alpha and gamma) irradiation techniques, along with quantitative multiscale modeling methods.

Impact of Pendent Ammonium Groups on Solubility and Cycling Charge Carrier Performance in Nonaqueous Redox Flow Batteries

The synthesis, characterization, electrochemical performance, and theoretical modeling of two base-metal charge carrier complexes incorporating a pendent quaternary ammonium group, [Ni(bppn-Me3)][BF4], 3′, and [Fe(PyTRENMe)][OTf]3, 4’, are described. Both complexes were produced in high yield and fully characterized using NMR, IR, and UV–vis spectroscopies as well as elemental analysis and single-crystal X-ray crystallography. The solubility of 3′ in acetonitrile showed a 283% improvement over its neutral precursor, whereas the solubility of complex 4’ was effectively unchanged. Cyclic voltammetry indicates an ∼0.1 V positive shift for all waves, with some changes in reversibility depending on the wave. Bulk electrochemical cycling demonstrates that both 3′ and 4’ can utilize the second more negative wave to a degree, whereas 4’ ceases to have a reversible positive wave. Flow cell testing of 3′ and 4’ with Fc as the posolyte reveals little improvement to the cycling performance of 3′ compared with its parent complex, whereas 4’ exhibits reductions in capacity decay when cycling either negative wave. Postcycling CVs indicate that crossover is the likely source of capacity loss in complexes 3, 3′, and 4’ because there is little change in the CV trace. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the ammonium group lowers the HOMO energy in 3′ and 4’, which may impart stability to cycling negative waves while making positive waves less accessible. The incorporation of a positively charged species can improve solubility, stored electron density, and capacity decay depending on the complex, features critical to high energy density redox flow battery performance.
