Crystal Growth and Elemental Homogeneity of the Multicomponent Rare-Earth Garnet (Lu 1/6 Y 1/6 Ho 1/6 Dy 1/6 Tb 1/6 Gd 1/6 ) 3 Al 5 O 12

We report high-entropy aluminum garnets were grown as bulk single crystals using the micro-pulling-down method, taking the synthesis of complex ceramics a step further from the conventional preparation of polycrystalline materials. We studied the effects of growth parameters on the elemental distribution in high optical quality crystals of (Lu 1/6 Y 1/6 Ho 1/6 Dy 1/6 Tb 1/6 Gd 1/6 ) 3 Al 5 O 12 containing six cations (yttrium and rare-earths) taken in equimolar amounts. A single garnet structure was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction. Electron microprobe measurements were obtained to correlate the radial distribution of rare-earth elements with pulling rates and molten zone height. The nature of the elemental distribution in the radial direction was associated with ionic radius: smaller rare-earths concentrated in the center of the crystal, while larger rare-earths segregated toward the outer edge of the cylindrical crystal. Faster pulling rates led to a flattening of the concentration profiles toward the nominal concentration, promoting a more homogeneous radial elemental distribution, while varying the molten zone height did not have a significant effect. The demonstrated success with crystal growth enables the practical availability of single crystals of multicomponent aluminum garnets for further discovery of new phenomena and applications.

Mild Hydrothermal Crystal Growth of Two Luminescing Uranyl Phosphates Exhibiting an Autunite-Type Sheet Structure

Two new layered uranyl phosphate compounds, K(UO 2 )PO 4 (H 2 O) 3 and Na(UO 2 )PO 4 (H 2 O) 1.52 , crystallizing in an autunite-type sheet structure, were successfully synthesized as both single-crystals and polycrystalline powders under mild hydrothermal conditions. The compound K(UO 2 )PO 4 (H 2 O) 3 crystallizes in the tetragonal crystal system with the space group P4/ncc, exhibiting lattice parameters of a = b = 6.99320(7) Å and c = 17.8389(3) Å. Similarly, Na(UO 2 )PO 4 (H 2 O) 1.52 also crystallizes in the tetragonal crystal system, however, in the space group P4/nmm and exhibits lattice parameters of a = b = 6.9787 Å and c = 8.6303(17) Å. Both compounds adopt layered structures, a characteristic feature of uranyl phosphates, and exhibit intense green fluorescence typical for uranyl-containing materials. As a result, the infrared spectroscopy, photoluminescence, and scintillation properties of these compounds were investigated.

Reactions of Studtite UO 4 ·4H 2 O in Alkali Hydroxides: Isolation of Single-Crystal Uranate Phases under Mild Hydrothermal Conditions

Uranyl peroxide complexes, particularly studtite (UO 4 ·4H 2 O), are important phases within the nuclear fuel cycle, forming through radiolysis-induced reactions on the surfaces of spent fuel and in waste environments. Studtite has been identified in Hanford’s irradiated fuel storage basins, Chornobyl’s corium lavas, and is anticipated on Fukushima’s fuel debris. While its formation and stability have been extensively studied, the reactivity of UO 4 ·4H 2 O in highly alkaline environments such as those encountered in high-level nuclear waste remains underexplored. These environments contain molar concentrations of [OH - ] and present a chemically dynamic and reactive environment where actinide behavior is not well understood. Reported here are investigations of uranium reactions in concentrated alkali hydroxides under mild hydrothermal conditions (<200 °C) that have resulted in the isolation of the alkali metal uranates Li 2 UO 4 , α-Na 2 UO 4 , γ-Na 2 U 2 O 7 , and K 2 U 2 O 7 . In contrast to conventional solid-state methods (>800 °C) that typically yield polycrystalline powders, our approach enables the isolation of these uranates as single crystals, allowing us to provide single-crystal structure solutions of certain uranates for the first time. Our findings match the results of high-level waste tank sampling, confirming that sodium diuranate (Na 2 U 2 O 7 ) is the most persistent uranium phase, potentially forming through reactions of uranyl peroxide intermediates with NaOH under radiolytic and highly alkaline conditions.

Crystal Growth of Quaternary RE 2 EuSi 2 S 8 ( RE = Ce–Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb) Using Flux-Assisted Boron Chalcogen Mixture (BCM) Method: Investigation of Magnetic and Luminescence Properties

A series of quaternary rare-earth containing thiosilicates with the general formula RE 2 EuSi 2 S 8 (RE = Ce–Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb) has been synthesized via the flux-assisted boron chalcogen mixture (BCM) crystal growth method. High-quality single crystals were obtained, and their crystal structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The RE 2 EuSi 2 S 8 series crystallizes in the trigonal system, adopting the space group R-3c. Polycrystalline samples were employed for physical property measurements, including magnetic susceptibility measurements, UV–visible diffuse reflectance, and photoluminescent response. Magnetic data of RE 2 EuSi 2 S 8 ( RE = Ce, Nd, and Gd) were collected over the 2–300 K temperature range. The samples were paramagnetic behavior with negative Weiss constants (θ W = −11.05, −10.55, and −1.35 K respectively). Their thermal stability was investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Optical band gaps, estimated from diffuse reflectance spectra, were determined to be 2.2(1) eV for Ce 2 EuSi 2 S 8 , 1.8(1) eV for Nd 2 EuSi 2 S 8 , and 1.7(1) eV for Gd 2 EuSi 2 S 8 respectively. Finally, photoluminescence measurements were collected on Ce 2 EuSi 2 S 8 and Tb 2 EuSi 2 S 8 single crystals.

Effects of B 2 O 3 on the Growth, Structural, and Magneto-Optical Properties of Yttrium Iron Garnet Single-Crystal Fibers

This study explores the fabrication of yttrium iron garnet (YIG) single crystal fibers using the laser heated pedestal growth (LHPG) method with the experimental addition of B 2 O 3 . The incorporation of B 2 O 3 facilitates the fiber fabrication process by lowering the required growth temperatures and likely modifying melt viscosity behavior, consistent with the established fluxing behavior of B2O3 and the comparative viscosity trend observed in the TMA−VFT analysis, thereby improving process efficiency while maintaining fiber quality. Structural characterization using EBSD and SC-XRD reveals a transition from polycrystalline to single-crystal behavior, with improved alignment along the [111] direction without altering the garnet structure. Magnetic measurements show increases in saturation magnetization in B 2 O 3 -assisted fibers. Three-dimensional anisotropy energy modeling, based on EBSD-derived Euler angles, indicates that the enhanced crystallinity and orientation contribute to reorientation of MCA energy distribution due to improved crystallographic alignment. Faraday rotation measurements show that the B 2 O 3 -assisted sample exhibits a rotation angle closer to reported values for high-quality YIG, suggesting improved phase purity and crystallographic quality. These findings demonstrate that B 2 O 3 -assisted LHPG growth is a scalable and nontoxic approach to producing high-performance YIG fibers for integrated photonic and magnetic field sensing applications.

Ultralow Thermal Conductivity and Thermoelectric Properties of Rb 2 Bi 8 Se 13

Complex bismuth chalcogenides are narrow band gap semiconductors with intrinsic low thermal conductivity, which exhibit high potential as highly efficient thermoelectric materials. Here, we assess the basic thermoelectric properties of polycrystalline Rb 2 Bi 8 Se 13 in the temperature range 300-823 K as well as performance-optimizing strategies. We find that the as-made bulk samples are single phase with the monoclinic crystal structure (P2 1 /m) and crystallize in layer morphology. The pristine sample exhibits an exceedingly low lattice thermal conductivity of 0.6- 0.46 W·m -1 ·K -1 at 300-823 K, which derives from strong lattice anharmonicity, large Grüneisen parameters, and low phonon velocities induced by the complex crystal structure with heavy atom Bi and a large unit cell. Here, the Cl doping successfully enhances the carrier concentration in Rb 2 Bi 8 Se 13 with a negligible impact on the electronic band structure, displaying common doping behaviors. Se vacancy, on the contrary, leads to n-type doping and enhances the effective mass and power factors more significantly. Consequently, a maximum ZT of ~0.75 at 823 K for the 0.3% Se-vacancy-doped sample is obtained.

Beyond Strain: Controlling the Surface Chemistry of CsPbI 3 Nanocrystal Films for Improved Stability against Ambient Reactive Oxygen Species

Colloidal halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have the possibility of easy scale-up due to their batch synthesis and have demonstrated excellent optoelectronic properties. In particular, perovskite NCs have remarkably high photoluminescence quantum yields in solution and as thin films and impressive open circuit voltages in photovoltaic devices. Despite these promising results, little work has been done to understand the stability of CsPbI 3 NCs for optoelectronic device applications. It has been previously shown that the ligands impart tensile surface strain, which stabilizes the black three-dimensional (3D) perovskite phase against phase degradation, making CsPbI 3 NCs some of the most structurally robust inorganic halide perovskites to date. However, understanding exactly how CsPbI 3 NCs degrade under ambient conditions is critical. Additionally, we demonstrate that the degradation mechanism of NCs is unique from, and 2 orders of magnitude slower than, their polycrystalline thin-film counterparts. Under specific conditions, CsPbI 3 NC films show a compositional instability instead of the phase instability seen in large grain CsPbI 3 . This is mediated through reactions with superoxide and other reactive oxygen species, which are initiated from surface defect states, O 2 and light. We then use this mechanistic insight to identify multiple strategies to prolong the lifetimes of CsPbI 3 NC films, by going beyond surface strain to mitigate key surface chemistries. We demonstrate that (1) minimizing the number of surface defects (2) using an alkylammonium bromide ligand surface treatment and (3) encapsulation with an oxygen scavenging layer all increase NC film lifetimes by inhibiting various steps in the photo-oxidation degradation reaction.

Structure, Magnetism, and First-Principles Modeling of the Na 0.5 La 0.5 RuO 3 Perovskite

High-purity polycrystalline Na 0.5 La 0.5 RuO 3 was synthesized by a solid-state method, and its properties were studied by magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and resistivity measurements. In this study, we find it to be an orthorhombic perovskite, in contrast to an earlier report, with random La/Na mixing. With a Curie–Weiss temperature of –231 K and an effective moment of 2.74 μB/mol Ru, there is no magnetic ordering down to 1.8 K. A broad hump at 1.4 K in the heat capacity, however, indicates the presence of a glassy magnetic transition, which we attribute to the influence of the random distribution of Na and La on the perovskite A-sites. Comparison to CaRuO 3 , a structurally ordered ruthenate perovskite with a similar A-site ionic radius and magnetic properties, is presented. First-principles calculations indicate that the Na–La distribution determines the local magnetic exchange interactions between Ru ions, favoring either antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic coupling when the local environment is Na- or La-rich. Thus, our data and analysis suggest that mixing cations with different charges and sizes on the A-site in this perovskite results in magnetic frustration through a balance of local magnetic exchange interactions.

Ferroelastic Hysteresis in Thin Films of Methylammonium Lead Iodide

Mechanical strain can modify the structural and electronic properties of methylammonium lead iodide MAPbI 3 . The consequences of ferroelastic hysteresis, which involves the retention of structural memory upon cycles of deformation, are reported for polycrystalline thin films of MAPbI 3 . Repeatedly bent films were examined using grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) to quantitatively characterize the strains and proportions of twin domains. Approximate locations for the coercive stress and saturation on the ferroelastic stress–strain curve are identified, and changes to the stress–strain curve with cyclic strain are characterized. Notably, an external stress source, such as thermal stress from the substrate or a roll-to-roll printing setup, must apply at least |50| MPa to modify the proportions of different twins. The presence of specific twin domains is found to correlate to previously reported strain and defect heterogeneity in MAPbI 3 films. Domains from differently strained twin sets interact with each other. Long-term stability testing reveals that the domain walls are highly immobile over extended periods. Nucleation of new domain walls occurs for specific mechanical strains and correlates closely with degradation. Furthermore, these results help to explain the behavior of ion migration, degradation rate, and photoluminescence in thin films under compressive and tensile strain.

Potential Skyrmion Host Fe(IO3)3: Connecting Stereoactive Lone-Pair Electron Effects to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction

Magnetic skyrmions, which are topologically distinct magnetic spin textures, are gaining increased attention for their unique physical properties and potential applications in spintronic devices. Here we present a design strategy for skyrmion host candidates based on combinations of magnetic spin, asymmetric building units having stereoactive lone-pair electrons, and polar lattice symmetry. To demonstrate the viability of the proposed rational design principles, we successfully synthesized a Fe(IO 3 ) 3 polycrystalline sample and single crystals by using a new simplified low-temperature pathway, which is experimentally feasible for extending materials growth of transition metal iodates. Single crystal X-ray and powder synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements demonstrated that Fe(IO 3 ) 3 crystallizes in the polar chiral hexagonal lattice with space group P63. The combined structural features of the macroscopic electric polarization along the c-axis stemming from the coalignment of the stereoactive lone-pairs of the IO 3 – trigonal pyramid and the magnetic Fe 3+ cation residing on the 3-fold rotation axis were selected to promote asymmetric exchange coupling. We find evidence of a predicted skyrmion phase at 14 K ≤ T ≤ 16 K and 2.5 T ≤ μ 0 H ≤ 3.2 T driven by a Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya (DM) interaction, a conclusion supported by the appreciable DM exchange and the zero-field spiral antiferromagnetic ground state of Fe(IO 3 ) 3 deduced from neutron diffraction experiments. The associated magnetic modulation wavelength of the putative skyrmions is expected to be short ~18 nm, comparable to the period of the DM-driven incommensurate order. This work links stereoactive lone-pair electron effects to enhanced DM interaction, demonstrating a new approach for chemical guidelines in the search for skyrmionic states of matter.

Epitaxial Thin Films of a Chalcogenide Perovskite

Chalcogenide perovskites have emerged as a new class of optoelectronic materials, especially for photovoltaic applications, but fundamental properties and applications of chalcogenide perovskites remain limited due to the lack of high-quality thin films. In this paper, we report direct epitaxial thin film growth of BaZrS 3 , a prototypical chalcogenide, by pulsed laser deposition. X-ray diffraction studies show that the films are strongly textured out-of-plane and have a clear in-plane epitaxial relationship with the substrate. Electron microscopy studies confirm the presence of epitaxy for the first few layers of the film at the interface, even though away from the interface, the films are polycrystalline with many extended defects, suggesting the potential for further improvement in growth. X-ray reflectivity and atomic force microscopy show smooth film surfaces and interfaces between the substrate and the film. The films show strong light absorption near the band edge and photoluminescence in the visible region, validating BaZrS 3 as a suitable candidate for ultrathin front absorbers in tandem solar cells. The photodetector devices show fast and efficient photo response with the highest ON/OFF ratio reported for BaZrS 3 films thus far. Our study opens up opportunities to use high quality thin films of chalcogenide perovskites to probe fundamental physical phenomena in thin films and heterostructures and also in photovoltaic and optoelectronic applications.

Solvent and A-Site Cation Control Preferred Crystallographic Orientation in Bromine-Based Perovskite Thin Films

Preferred crystallographic orientation in polycrystalline films is desirable for efficient charge carrier transport in metal halide perovskites and semiconductors. However, the mechanisms that determine the preferred orientation of halide perovskites are still not well understood. In this work, we investigate crystallographic orientation in lead bromide perovskites. We show that the solvent of the precursor solution and organic A-site cation strongly affect the preferred orientation of the deposited perovskite thin films. Specifically, we show that the solvent, dimethylsulfoxide, influences the early stages of crystallization and induces preferred orientation in the deposited films by preventing colloidal particle interactions. Additionally, the methylammonium A-site cation induces a higher degree of preferred orientation than the formamidinium counterpart. We use density functional theory to show that the lower surface energy of the (100) plane facets in methylammonium-based perovskites, compared to the (110) planes, is the reason for the higher degree of preferred orientation. In contrast, the surface energy of the (100) and (110) facets is similar for formamidinium-based perovskites, leading to lower degree of preferred orientation. Furthermore, we show that different A-site cations do not significantly affect ion diffusion in bromine-based perovskite solar cells but impact ion density and accumulation, leading to increased hysteresis. Our work highlights the interplay between the solvent and organic A-site cation which determine crystallographic orientation and plays a critical role in the electronic properties and ionic migration of solar cells.

From Layered Antiferromagnet to 3D Ferromagnet: LiMnBi-to-MnBi Magneto-Structural Transformation

Here, the intermetallic compound LiMnBi was synthesized by the two-step solid-state reaction from the elements. The synthesis temperature of 850 K was selected based on in-situ high-temperature powder X-ray diffraction data. LiMnBi crystalizes in the layered-like PbClF structure type (a = 4.3131(7) Å, c = 7.096(1) Å at 100 K, P4/nmm space group, Z = 2). LiMnBi structure is built of the alternating [MnBi] and Li layers, as determined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. Magnetic properties measurements and solid-state 7 Li Nuclear Magnetic Resonance data collected for polycrystalline LiMnBi samples indicate the long-range antiferromagnetic ordering of Mn sublattice at ~340 K, with no superconductivity down to 5 K detected. LiMnBi is air- and water-sensitive. In aerobic conditions, Li can be extracted from LiMnBi structure to form Li 2 O/LiOH and MnBi (NiAs structure type, P6 3 /mmc). The obtained MnBi polymorph was previously reported to be one of the strongest rare-earth-free ferromagnets, yet its bulk synthesis in powder form is cumbersome. The proposed magneto-structural transformation from ternary LiMnBi to ferromagnetic MnBi involves condensation of the MnBi4 tetrahedra upon Li deintercalation and is exclusive to LiMnBi. In contrast, ferromagnetic MnBi cannot be obtained from either isostructural NaMnBi and KMnBi, or from the structurally related CaMn 2 Bi 2 . Such a distinctive transformation in the case of LiMnBi is presumed to be due to its fitting reactivity to yield MnBi and favorable interlayer distance between [MnBi] layers, while the interlayer distance in NaMnBi and KMnBi structural analogs is unfavorably long. The studies of delithiation from the layered-like LiMnBi under different chemical environments indicate that the yield of the MnBi depends on the type of solvent used and the kinetics of the reaction. A slow rate and mild reaction media lead to a high fraction of the MnBi product. The saturation magnetization of the “as-prepared” MnBi is ~50 % of the expected value of 81.3 emu/g. Overall, this study adds a missing member to the family of ternary pnictides and illustrates how soft-chemistry methods can be used to obtain “difficult-to-synthesize” compounds.

Probing Phosphorus Solubility and Its Effect on Critical Temperature ( T c ) in the Helical Superconducting Magnet RbEuFe 4 As 4– x P x

RbEuFe 4 As 4 exhibits a rare combination of high-temperature superconductivity and noncollinear magnetism, originating from the FeAs and Eu layers, respectively. In order to fine-tune its superconducting and magnetic properties, we studied P-doped RbEuFe 4 As 4–x P x . To determine the value of x for which RbEuFe 4 As 4–x P x exists, members of the series have been synthesized in the form of relatively large-sized single crystals by a high-temperature flux growth technique using RbAs flux as well as polycrystalline powder by direct combination reactions between RbFe 2 As 2 and EuFe 2 As 2–x P x . The flux crystal growth reactions indicate that RbEuFe 4 As 4–x P x forms with the values of x ≤ 0.12, which is corroborated by the Rietveld refinement analysis on the products obtained from direct combination reactions. The solubility limit exists primarily due to the preferential site As(2) occupation by P in the RbEuFe 4 As 4 crystal structure. Finally, as x increases in RbEuFe 4 As 4–x P x , magnetization measurements reveal that the superconducting critical transition temperature (T c ) decreases, while the magnetic ordering temperature (T N ) remains almost unchanged in comparison to undoped RbEuFe 4 As 4 .

Enhancing Properties with Distortion: A Comparative Study of Two Iron Phosphide Fe 2 P Polymorphs

Iron phosphide (Fe 2 P) crystallizes in its own hexagonal crystal structure type (h-Fe 2 P). As found in meteorites, orthorhombic polymorph (o-Fe 2 P) was originally reported as a high-temperature and high-pressure phase. Recently, o-Fe 2 P was described as being stable at ambient pressure, yet no synthetic methods were developed for single-crystal growth or single-phase bulk powder synthesis. Here, we report a successful method for growing o-Fe 2 P single crystals and synthesizing phase-pure polycrystalline samples using tin-flux. In situ powder X-ray diffraction studies showed that the phase transition from o-Fe 2 P to h-Fe 2 P occurs at about 873 K, and below that temperature, the formation of the o-Fe 2 P phase is favored thermodynamically rather than kinetically. Systematic comparison of transport, magnetic, and electrocatalytic properties of both h-Fe 2 P and o-Fe 2 P phases showed a substantial impact of the crystal structure on properties. The orthorhombic structural distortion resulted in considerable changes in magnetic properties, with the o-Fe 2 P phase exhibiting a 60% lower Fe magnetic moment and a substantially higher ferromagnetic Curie temperature than h-Fe 2 P. Further, electrochemical measurements toward the hydrogen evolution reaction in acidic media showed that the o-Fe 2 P phase requires an 80 mV lower overpotential than the h-Fe 2 P phase to generate a current density of -10 mA/cm 2 , and their electronic structures suggest that the higher density of states at the Fermi energy is the origin of superior catalytic activity in o-Fe 2 P.

Ba 4 RuMn 2 O 10 : A Noncentrosymmetric Polar Crystal Structure with Disordered Trimers

Phase-pure polycrystalline Ba 4 RuMn 2 O 10 was prepared and determined to adopt the noncentrosymmetric polar crystal structure (space group Cmc2 1 ) based on results of second harmonic generation, convergent beam electron diffraction, and Rietveld refinements using powder neutron diffraction data. The crystal structure features zigzag chains of corner-shared trimers, which contain three distorted face-sharing octahedra. The three metal sites in the trimers are occupied by disordered Ru/Mn with three different ratios: Ru1:Mn1 = 0.202(8):0.798(8), Ru2:Mn2 = 0.27(1):0.73(1), and Ru3:Mn3 = 0.40(1):0.60(1), successfully lowering the symmetry and inducing the polar crystal structure from the centrosymmetric parent compounds Ba 4 T 3 O 10 (T = Mn, Ru; space group Cmca). The valence state of Ru/Mn is confirmed to be +4 according to X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy. Ba 4 RuMn 2 O 10 is a narrow bandgap (~0.6 eV) semiconductor exhibiting spin-glass behavior with strong magnetic frustration and antiferromagnetic interactions.

FeSi 4 P 4 and CoSi 3 P 3 : Hidden Gems of Ternary Tetrel Pnictides with Outstanding Nonlinear Optical Properties

Metal silicon phosphides have shown promise as nonlinear optical materials. To be practically useful and cheap, earth-abundant 3d transition metals are preferred over their scarcer and more expensive 4d and 5d counterparts. Here, we developed a synthetic method to produce polycrystalline bulk powders and millimeter-sized single crystals of ternary compounds FeSi 4 P 4 and CoSi 3 P 3 . Both studied compounds have noncentrosymmetric and chiral crystal structures with ordered Si/P arrangements as was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and solid-state NMR. Despite the presence of the transition metal, FeSi 4 P 4 and CoSi 3 P 3 are semiconductors with direct band gaps of 1.3 and 1.6 eV, respectively, indicating low-spin d 6 electronic configuration for octahedral Fe 2+ and Co 3+ . Relative to reported sulfide materials, FeSi 4 P 4 and CoSi 3 P 3 small band gap semiconductors demonstrate an outstanding combination of second-harmonic generation (SHG) activity and laser damage threshold (LDT). Both studied materials are phase-matchable with a 2.09 μm laser and not only exhibit 2.5–3.0 times stronger SHG signal than that of the state-of-the-art AgGaS 2 standard but also demonstrate an LDT response of 2.3–2.5 times higher than that of AgGaS 2 (at 1.09 μm laser with a pulse width of 10 ns)-which is unprecedented for small band gap semiconductors.
