233 U oxide Measurement Campaign Data: Passive and Active Neutron Multiplicity Measurements of Uranium Oxide Samples at Oak Ridge National Laboratory

During FY2023, three measurement campaigns were conducted at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The goal was to quantify the neutron signatures of samples of uranium oxide containing uranium 233 and uranium-235. This report presents the neutron multiplicity data obtained using the large volume active well coincidence counter (LV-AWCC).

Hydrophobic Carbon Nanosheets as Passivation Layer for Perovskite Solar Cells with High Efficiency and Stability (Final Technical Report)

Hybrid organic-inorganic metal halide perovskites have continually demonstrated competitive advantages for photovoltaic applications due to their high light absorption coefficient, tunable bandgaps, ambipolar charge mobility and high tolerance of defects. However, there are many challenges yet to overcome to bring this technology to the market. For instance, bridging the ‘scaling gap’ and transitioning PSCs from a lab scale to an industrial scale is a serious challenge. This project developed a high stability and inexpensive perovskite solar cell (PSC) by incorporating hydrophobic carbon nanosheets as counter electrodes (CEs). We demonstrated that the hydrogenated carbon nanosheets with tunable hydrophobic properties as CEs can improve life-time stability of PSCs in operating conditions (i.e. humid air) while achieving impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE).

Effect of Surface Passivation of CZTS Semiconductor Detector on Leakage Current

Cadmium Zinc Telluride Selenide (CdZnTeSe or CZTS)has shown high crystal quality for room-temperature gamma ray and X-ray detection applications compared to Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CdZnTe or CZT) [1,2]. Current applications of CZT include medical imaging, homeland security, and X-ray and gamma ray astronomy [3]. CZST has similar potential applications

Passive Acoustic Monitoring of a Riverine Turbine with Stationary Hydrophones

In this study, we characterize the sound generated by a cross-flow riverine turbine in the Kvichak River near Igiugig, Alaska, United States. To do this, we follow the International Electro-technical Commission (IEC) technical specification for characterization of the acoustic emissions from marine energy converters. While marine mammals do not inhabit the test site, the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) guidelines for assessing the effects of anthropogenic sound on marine mammal hearing were implemented to provide context for the deployment of similar turbines in other areas. The results indicate that turbine sound at the measurement locations was not predicted to be harmful to marine mammals. Results also provide insight into the acoustic characteristics of current energy converters and the complex acoustic propagation in rivers.

Feasibility of Passive MOSFET Paralleling for Photovoltaic Current-Voltage Curves

Current-voltage curves are an important method of characterizing Photovoltaic (PV) Modules. NREL has developed several low-cost MOSFET-based devices that can characterize PV cells and modules. The size of PV modules that can be measured is limited by the power limitations of a single MOSFET. By using multiple MOSFET devices, each can operate at a lower current, paralleled on resistance is also decreased allowing for higher power loads. Operating multiple devices in parallel can cause an imbalance in current, thus causing some devices to conduct more, pushing them into a thermal runaway condition. To investigate this, an active feedback circuit was tested with paralleled devices using a PV module load. The efficacy, limitations, and design considerations of using parallel MOSFET loads for PV characterization are explored. This work is not new, but the implementation of a paralleled architecture in a low cost characterization tool is novel.
