An improved algorithm for the isolation of polynomial real zeros

THe Collins-Loos algorithm for computing isolating intervals for the zeros of an integer polynomial requires the evaluation of polynomials at rational points. This implies the use of arbitrary precision integer arithmetic. It is shown how careful use of single precision, floating point arithmetic within the context of a slightly modified algorithm can make the calculation considerably faster and no less exact. Typically, 95% or more of the evaluations can be done without exact arithmetic. The precise speedup depends on the relative costs of the arithmetic in a given implementation. The implementation on DEC KL-10 computer is some 5 to 10 times faster than the original Univac 1110 implementation in SAC-I.

Isolation and identification of the conidial germination factor of Neurospora crassa

The germination-essential substance (germination factor /GF/) that is lost from conidia of Neurospora crassa on exposure to solutions of low water activity has been isolated and identified as a group of iron-transport compounds, or siderochromes. The principal siderochrome of conidia is ferricrocin, a cyclic hexapeptide. A closely related substance, ferrichrome C, is tentatively identified as a minor constituent. The same substances are also present in extracts of mycelium along with small amounts of a third siderochrome, which has not been identified. The GF activity of culture filtrates is due to coprogen, the only siderochrome previously identified with N. crassa.

A high-voltage-isolated automated data acquisition system

A data acquisition system for electric-arc heated, high-temperature wind tunnel facilities has been developed; the high voltage isolation of the system exceeds 50 kV. A closed loop, optically coupled data system acquires transducer signals from high-temperature, arc-generated plasmas used for reentry testing. The data acquisition system monitors on-line tests, stores data on magnetic tape, and prints out a paper tape. The system has 400 data channels: 200 low-voltage programmable channels and 200 high-voltage sequential channels.

Concepts for the design of a completely active helicopter isolation system using output vector feedback

The theory of output vector feedback (a few measured quantities) is used to derive completely active oscillation isolation functions for helicopters. These feedback controller concepts are tested with various versions of the BO 105 helicopter and their performance is demonstrated. A compensation of the vibrational excitations from the rotor and harmonics of the number of blades are considered. There is also a fast and automatic trim function for maneuvers.

Robotics control using isolated word recognition of voice input

A speech input/output system is presented that can be used to communicate with a task oriented system. Human speech commands and synthesized voice output extend conventional information exchange capabilities between man and machine by utilizing audio input and output channels. The speech input facility is comprised of a hardware feature extractor and a microprocessor implemented isolated word or phrase recognition system. The recognizer offers a medium sized (100 commands), syntactically constrained vocabulary, and exhibits close to real time performance. The major portion of the recognition processing required is accomplished through software, minimizing the complexity of the hardware feature extractor.

Isolation and confinement - Considerations for colonization

This paper discusses three types of isolation (sensory/perceptual, temporal, and social) that could adversely affect mankind in space. The literature dealing with laboratory and field experiments relevant to these areas is summarized and suggestions are given for dealing with these problems within the space colony community. Also, consideration is given to the potential effects of physical confinement and the need for usable space. Finally, a modification of Maslow's hierarchy of needs is proposed as a theoretical framework to understand and investigate mankind's psychological needs in space.

Positive isolation disconnect

Positive-isolation-disconnect (PID) device with two mating halves prevents leakage or spillover when two fluid lines are disconnected. Each half has shutoff poppet to stop fluid flow. When flow is shut, poppets are flush against each other, leaving no space for fluid to remain it.

Positive isolation disconnect

A disconnect composed basically of two halves each consisting of a poppet valve operable to isolate fluid with essentially zero fluid loss is presented. The two halves are coupled together by a quickly releasable coupling which may be either a coupling ring tightened or loosened by a twisting motion, or a clamp operated by a pivoted to prevent disconnecting the two halves until both valves are in closed condition. The positive feature of the device is one requiring a valve closing step before a disconnect step, and takes structural form in an accentric lobe mounted on the valve operating stem. If some obstruction prevents the poppet from moving to its seat, the eccentric lobe cannot be rotated to the closed position, and the interlock prevents a disconnect.

Bistable (latching) solenoid actuated propellant isolation valve

The design, fabrication, assembly and test of a development configuration bistable (latching) solenoid actuated propellant isolation valve suitable for the control hydrazine and liquid fluorine to an 800 pound thrust rocket engine is described. The valve features a balanced poppet, utilizing metal bellows, a hard poppet/seat interface and a flexure support system for the internal moving components. This support system eliminates sliding surfaces, thereby rendering the valve free of self generated particles.

Optically isolated logarithmic nanoammeter capable of floating to 5 kilovolts

A logarithmic current-measuring instrument was developed to measure plasma coupling currents at a common mode voltage of 5 kilovolts. Positive or negative currents can be measured from 10 to the -9th power to .001 ampere direct current. Optical isolation is used to control input switching and to provide data referenced to ground potential. Analog meter readouts as well as zero to five volt outputs are provided for peripheral data collection. Six independent channels are provided. Three measure positive currents, and three measure negative currents. Although designed for vacuum operation, it can be used equally well in air to measure low currents at high common mode voltages.

On sound radiation from the trailing edge of an isolated airfoil in a uniform flow

An experimental investigation has been conducted to determine the physical process of the noise production from the trailing edge of an isolated two-dimensional airfoil embedded in a low turbulence uniform mean flow. The Reynolds number of the airfoil based on chord was greater than 1,000,000 and that the boundary layer was fully turbulent at the trailing edge. Smoke injection technique and spark shadowgraphy were used to study the structural features of the boundary layer. Two point joint statistical analyses were made on the surface pressure, the radiated sound and the relationship between the two quantities. Operating conditions included two free stream velocities and two angles of attack for both a naturally developed and an artificially tripped boundary layer. Flow visualizations revealed the existence of large scale coherent motions in the outer region of the boundary layer. The observed coherent motions had scales of the order of boundary layer thickness and a convection velocity near the free stream velocity. The production process of the airfoil trailing edge noise was determined to be the convection of the large scale coherent eddies over the trailing edge of the airfoil. The noise field so generated was found to be rather coherent and dipole-like.

Coupling of ionosphere and troposphere during the occurrence of isolated tornadoes on November 20, 1973

The paper examines the coupling between the ionosphere and the troposphere during time periods with isolated tornadoes on the stormy day of November 20, 1973. Observations are made with a high-frequency CW Doppler array system, in which radio receivers located at a central site monitored signals transmitted from three independent remote sites on three sets of frequencies (4.0125, 4.759, 5.734 MHz) and reflected off the ionosphere approximately halfway between the transmitter and receiver sites. It is shown that the sources of the gravity waves associated with tornadoes are always on the squall lines and near the tornado touchdown locations, and that analyses of ionospheric Doppler sounder observations of medium-scale gravity waves can contribute to the understanding of the coupling between the ionosphere and the troposphere during periods of severe storm activity.

Case studies of gravity waves associated with isolated tornadic storms on January 13, 1976

Penetrative convection, thunderstorms, squall lines, etc., all generate atmospheric gravity waves which can be observed by a ground-based ionospheric Doppler sounder array. Sources of these waves can be determined from reverse ray tracing computations. Case studies of gravity waves associated with isolated tornadic storms on January 13, 1976 were summarized to establish the minimum data sampling time required for correct spectral analysis and ray tracing computations. It was concluded that the data sampling time can be reduced to two to three times the wave period while still obtaining a reasonably good power spectral density. It was also demonstrated that the data sampling time can be reduced to two to three times the time delay of the wave arrival between two station pairs while still obtaining a justifiably good cross-spectral analysis. Computed source locations of the observed gravity waves are compared with conventional and satellite meteorological data.

Structure and evolution of isolated giant gaseous protoplanets

A model is developed describing the structure and evolution of isolated giant gaseous protoplanets in the mass range 0.3-4.5 Jovian masses. The central region of protoplanets of mass less than about 1 Jovian mass is, at some evolutionary epoch, thermodynamically favorable to the liquefaction of major interstellar grain components. All protoplanets studied are convective throughout most of their interior. In addition, it was found that the thermal contraction time depends sensitively on the surface opacity (at T less than 200 K).

The prediction of the turbulent flow field about an isolated airfoil

A compressible time-dependent solution of the Navier-Stokes equations including a transition-turbulence model is obtained for the isolated airfoil flow field problem. The equations are solved by a consistently split linearized block implicit scheme due to Briley and McDonald. A nonorthogonal body fitted coordinate system is used which has maximum resolution near the airfoil surface and in the region of the airfoil leading edge. The transition-turbulence model is based upon the turbulence kinetic energy equation and predicts regions of laminar, transitional and turbulent flow. Mean flow field and turbulence field results are presented for an NACA 0012 airfoil at zero and nonzero incidence angles at Reynolds number up to one million and low subsonic Mach numbers.

Boundary layer measurements of the OH radical in the vicinity of an isolated power plant plume - SO2 and NO2 chemical conversion times

Direct measurements of the OH radical in the vicinity of an isolated power plant plume are reported. These measurements were used to estimate the conversion time of SO2 to H2SO4-sulfate aerosol via the initiating step OH + SO2 + M yields HSO3. Using the near-high-noon measured value of OH (9.5 million per cu cm), resulted in a 1/e conversion time of 1.4 days. The latter lifetime would correspond to a conversion rate of about 2%/hr. When the lifetime calculation was modified to take into consideration the OH diurnal cycle, the 1/e conversion time for SO2 was found to be 4.4 days, giving an apparent overall rate of conversion of about 0.7%/hr. Similar calculations carried out for the conversion of NO2 to NHO3 resulted in 1/e lifetimes for NO2 of 2-3 h for midday time periods.
