Performance and Durability of Hybrid Fuel Cell Systems for Class-8 Long Haul Trucks

Hybrid fuel cell-battery configurations are investigated that overcome thermal management issues in fuel cell powertrains for heavy-duty Class 8 trucks. The battery is sized so that it has sufficient capacity to provide supplemental power and energy on a hill climb transient at end-of-life. A dynamic load sharing strategy is developed to distribute the power demand between the fuel cell system (FCS) and the energy storage system in a manner that optimizes their lifetimes. The FCS end-of-life is identified as the terminal point beyond which the stack cannot generate the rated power with target power density at 0.7 V and 40 °C ambient temperature. Reaching the target lifetime with a-Pt/C cathode catalyst in one hybrid configuration requires voltage clipping to 813 mV, idle power limited to 50 kW, catalyst overloading to 0.45 mg cm -2 total Pt in anode and cathode, and 44% active membrane area oversizing. The stack and FCS drive cycle efficiencies decrease by 4.2% and 5.4%, respectively, during the electrode lifetime. Further, the FCS performance, durability and cost are compared with the targets of 68% peak efficiency, 0.30 mg cm -2 total Pt loading, 2.5 kW/g PGM Pt group metal (PGM) loading, 750 mW cm -2 power density, 25,000-h lifetime and $80/kW cost.

Optimal production of Phanerochaete chrysosporium manganese peroxidases and Trametes sp. C30 laccase hybrid Lac131 in Aspergillus niger for lignin bioconversion

Background Incorporating the production of related ligninolytic enzymes into industrial filamentous fungus Aspergillus niger will enhance the bioconversion of lignocelluloses to various chemical products. Results In this study, transgenic expression of Phanerochaete chrysosporium manganese peroxidases (mnps) and Trametes sp. C30 laccase hybrid Lac131 (lac131) were examined and optimized in A. niger 11414 prtT∆ strain. Five mnps (mnp1, mnp2, mnp3, mnp4, and mnp5) and lac131 genes were expressed separately or in combination. The transgenic strain containing the entire mnp2 genomic coding sequence (gmnp2) exhibited the highest mnP activity among the five mnp over-expression strains in the modified minimal medium (mMM) with addition of 5 g/L bovine hemoglobin (bHg). We examined the effects of hemin and bHg on mnP production in the gmnp2 strain cultures and found that at least 1 g/L bHg was required, while hemin was not. Culture conditions for mnP production were further optimized for the gmnp2 strain and the highest mnP activities were detected in the cultures grown at 25 °C and 200 rpm with an initial pH of 4.5. Effects of soy protein, skim milk, and bovine serum albumin on mnP production were investigated; 5 g/L of soy proteins or skim milk had comparable effects to 2.5 g/L bHg, while cultures with bovine serum albumin had diminished mnP activity. Disruption of both prtT and vsm1 substantially augmented the mnP production and its activity reached 575 U/L. Trametes sp. C30 laccase hybrid lac131 was strongly expressed in either A. niger gmnp2 (1975 U/L) or 11414prtT∆ (3895 U/L) strain. Both mnP and laccase in the culture supernatants effectively decolorized selected phenolic compounds (dyes) and cleaved tagged model lignin dimers. Conclusion The mnP was successfully produced in A. niger by optimizing the culture conditions and host strain. Co-expression of all four mnp genes in the same expression host by multiplex CRISPR will lead to the mnP production reaching levels comparable to P. chrysosporium, while only requiring 36 h at 25 °C. The Lac131 activity in transgenic A. niger strain is 4- to 7-times higher than that in previous studies. Co-production of mnP and laccase in A. niger will enhance the lignin bioconversion efficiency.

Surface plasmon-cavity hybrid state and its graphene modulation at THz frequencies

Fabry–Pérot (F–P) cavity and metal hole array are classic photonic devices. Integrating F–P cavity with holey metal typically enhances interfacial reflection and dampens wave transmission. In this work, a hybrid bound surface state is found within rectangular metal holes on a silicon substrate by merging an extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) mode and a high-order F–P cavity mode both spatially and spectrally. Transmission, Q-factor, and bandwidth can be enhanced significantly with respect to the classical EOT and F–P interference by simply sweeping the cavity length. This state can provide EOT properties and ten times broader EOT bandwidth well below the effective plasma frequency of the periodic metal holes, where the metal holes typically show evanescent properties and do not support EOT in theory. Furthermore, a large modulation range of 25 % and 39 % is demonstrated with various graphene patterns for the transmittance of this hybrid state at 500 and 582 GHz, respectively.

Rapid Retooling for Emergency Response with Hybrid Manufacturing

The global manufacturing industry has served as a keystone in supporting the weight of emergency response operations during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. Development of core technologies necessary to prevent the spread of COVID-19, including Personal Protective Equipment, infection testing kits, and vaccine research supplies, requires intensive manufacturing operations to support a population at scale. The production of these items is traditionally dependent on the tool and die industry, requiring imports of steel castings from overseas suppliers. The United States (U.S.) manufacturing industry was left isolated and unprepared as international borders closed overnight and normal supply chains were cut. This technical note provides a forward-looking approach at the benefits of hybrid manufacturing processes to provide rapid reconfiguration capabilities in the U.S. tool and die industry. A demonstration in rapid production of new tooling is provided to illustrate these benefits. Finally, emerging hybrid technologies are discussed in pursuit of more flexible manufacturing operations.

Analysis of the performance of a hybrid CPU/GPU 1D2D coupled model for real flood cases

Coupled 1D2D models emerged as an efficient solution for a two-dimensional (2D) representation of the floodplain combined with a fast one-dimensional (1D) schematization of the main channel. At the same time, high-performance computing (HPC) has appeared as an efficient tool for model acceleration. In this work, a previously validated 1D2D Central Processing Unit (CPU) model is combined with an HPC technique for fast and accurate flood simulation. Due to the speed of 1D schemes, a hybrid CPU/GPU model that runs the 1D main channel on CPU and accelerates the 2D floodplain with a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) is presented. Since the data transfer between sub-domains and devices (CPU/GPU) may be the main potential drawback of this architecture, the test cases are selected to carry out a careful time analysis. Here, the results reveal the speed-up dependency on the 2D mesh, the event to be solved and the 1D discretization of the main channel. Additionally, special attention must be paid to the time step size computation shared between sub-models. In spite of the use of a hybrid CPU/GPU implementation, high speed-ups are accomplished in some cases.

Opportunistic Hybrid Communications Systems for Distributed PV Coordination

A full-scale, operational implementation of the opportunistic hybrid communications systems for distributed photovoltaic (PV) coordination was successfully developed, simulated, and validated in this 3-year project. The system is considered hybrid because it uses different communications pathways from the scale of residential PV inverters to a transmission network; primary technologies harnessed include Low-Power Wireless Personal Area Network (LoWPAN), Power Line Communication (PLC), WiFi mesh, Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX), Ethernet cable, and Optical Ethernet systems. It is opportunistic in that it chooses to route messages through each of these systems based on recent data about latency and availability to ensure reliable message passing.

Hybrid Electrochemical Hydrogen/Metal Hydride Compressor (Final Technical Report)

Various alternatives to traditional mechanical compressor systems have been considered, including MHC and EHC. Both MHCs and EHCs are solid-state systems that have no moving parts other than valves. Both are quiet and have low maintenance requirements. However, strength and material issues as well as water and heat management issues have challenged EHCs, especially, when operated at very high pressures. Similarly, low efficiency, especially, when staging is required to attain high, pressure ratios, has challenged MHCs and has made them too complex and expensive. Material degradation, due to hydrogen impurity effects, has also created issues for MHCs. One novel alternative evaluated here is to combine EHC and MHC technologies in a way to maximize their advantages and to minimize each of their challenges to improve the overall systems performance on a path to meet or exceed current DOE targets. A hybrid EH/MH compressor takes advantage of lower maintenance and operating costs as well as increased reliability associated with both the MHC and EHC technologies over traditional mechanical compressors. Neither the MHC nor the EHC have any moving parts other than valves. The hybrid system also takes advantage of the higher efficiency and lower cost of the EHC by operating at lower delivery pressures combined with the robust and simple operation of a single-stage, MH compressor at higher pressures. Both MHC and EHC technologies are scalable and can be used for a variety of hydrogen compression and delivery applications.

Validation and Verification of TEDS Facility HYBRID Modeling

The HYBRID modeling repository is an in-house developed library of models for selected integrated energy systems (IES) modelling. HYBRID models have been developed since 2015 to describe the physical operation of tightly coupled thermal systems including power generators, thermal transport systems, thermal storage, thermal-to-electric conversion systems, and other thermal applications. Here, validation and verification (V&V) capabilities are demonstrated using the Thermal Energy Distribution System (TEDS) at INL. Building upon prior work, the TEDS model has been updated and verified so that it better represents the installed system configuration and the operating control system. The model control system was changed to allow replication of actual experimental procedures. Experimental operations focusing primarily on thermocline tank performance were devised and performed. Several anomalies were found in the operation data of the experiment facility. V&V activities calibrating a selected input parameter are demonstrated on a single component as well as with a single parameter within the thermocline. Calibrating is then demonstrated on multiple components and a multi-parameter metric for the entire system. The validation methodology is successfully applied to validate the model with experimental data. It is also used to confirm a hypothesis behind one of the anomalies in experimental performance.

Status Report on Thermal Extraction Modeling within HYBRID

Idaho National Laboratory continues to be at the forefront of advanced reactor systems and integrated energy systems (IES) research. The HYBRID modeling repository is the computational modeling repository used to evaluate potential IES configurations. To support IES analysis, it is necessary to develop models that can evaluate a range of thermal integration points within given energy conversion systems. This work includes as many technologies as possible anticipating that many technologies will be deployed to broadly reduce climate impacts of energy intensive processes. To provide this analysis, a new balance of plant model has been generated. This report will discuss progress on this new main model and discuss nominal conditions for the primary reactor types contained within HYBRID.

Hybrid Powered Command Trailers Cost-Benefit Analysis Tool: User Guide and Examples

U.S. Forest Service (USFS) wildfire base camps use portable power for electrical needs, including yurts and trailers from which logistics staff work during the incident. These yurts and trailers are conventionally powered by portable diesel generators. Hybrid portable power systems consisting of a combination of solar photovoltaics (PV), battery energy storage systems (BESS), and/or backup diesel generators have been used in recent years and were piloted by the National Technology and Development Program (NTDP) on incidents in fall 2024 as part of NTDP's Portable Power Project. As part of that project, this work included the development of two Excel-based tools and two reports explaining the tools. The first tool, the Incident Energy Systems Model, is an Excel-based tool that models the power output of hybrid portable power systems powering yurts and/or trailers at fire camps over a typical day. The associated report (published separately) outlines a user guide for the model and walks through two scenarios. The two scenarios are 1) trailers powered by rooftop solar PV, batteries, and a back-up diesel generator, and 2) trailers powered by ground mount solar PV, batteries, and a back-up diesel generator. The second tool is a high-level cost-benefit analysis of the same two types of portable power systems, and is location independent.

Standard Library Grid-Forming Hybrid Control Inverter-Based Resource Model Specification (REGFM_C1)

This document describes a standard library grid-forming (GFM) hybrid control inverter-based resource (IBR) model. The GFM hybrid control approach implements both a typical GFM control and a typical grid-following (GFL) control inside one single inverter simultaneously, so that it can take advantage of both methods without comprising the benefits of a typical GFM. The initial version of model specification was jointly developed by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), Tesla Energy, and EPRI, and it was revised multiple times later to incorporate suggestions from WECC MVS members. Tesla Energy provided main control blocks to support the development of this model specification. This standard library model is developed to help the utility industry better understand the GFM technology. The model could be used to represent equipment for long-term planning studies where vendor-specific models are not available. As equipment matures and improves, standard library models will be updated to capture the new functionalities of GFMs. It is not intended that these models will always remain representative of all future GFM technologies.

System Analysis of an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) - Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) Hybrid Cycle

The variability of renewable energy sources poses challenges for reliable grid operation. Conventional thermal power sources, though reliable, often lack operational flexibility. Hybrid energy systems that integrate Solid Oxide Fuel cells (SOFC) with Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) offer a promising solution by achieving relatively higher efficiency and grid-following capability. This study investigates performance of a 100-kW pressurized SOFC-ICE hybrid cycle. In this configuration, unutilized SOFC fuel is used to drive the engine, with a turbocharger providing air supply and an external reformer generating syngas. System components were numerically modeled using MATLAB/SIMULINK for the SOFC and reformer, and EBSILON® for the ICE and balance of plant. Parametric studies varied fuel utilization (70-90%), reformer temperature (600 – 1000K), anode off-gas recirculation (0 – 70%), and current density (0.2 – 0.55 A/cm2). Results show that the SOFC and ICE operate as thermally independent topping and bottoming cycles, achieving peak efficiency of 62% under optimized conditions.

Recent Developments and Challenges in Hybrid Solid Electrolytes for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have attracted worldwide research interest due to their high energy density and long cycle life. Solid-state LIBs improve the safety of conventional liquid-based LIBs by replacing the flammable organic electrolytes with a solid electrolyte. Among the various types of solid electrolytes, hybrid solid electrolytes (HSEs) demonstrate great promise to achieve high ionic conductivity, reduced interfacial resistance between the electrolyte and electrodes, mechanical robustness, and excellent processability due to the combined advantages of both polymer and inorganic electrolyte. This article summarizes recent developments in HSEs for LIBs. Approaches for the preparation of hybrid electrolytes and current understanding of ion-transport mechanisms are discussed. The main challenges including unsatisfactory ionic conductivity and perspectives of HSEs for LIBs are highlighted for future development. The present review provides insights into HSE development to allow a more efficient and target-oriented future endeavor on achieving high-performance solid-state LIBs.

Hybrid renewable energy systems: the value of storage as a function of PV-wind variability

As shares of variable renewable energy (VRE) on the electric grid increase, sources of grid flexibility will become increasingly important for maintaining the reliability and affordability of electricity supply. Lithium-ion battery energy storage has been identified as an important and cost-effective source of flexibility, both by itself and when coupled with VRE technologies like solar photovoltaics (PV) and wind. In this study, we explored the current and future value of utility-scale hybrid energy systems comprising PV, wind, and lithium-ion battery technologies (PV-wind-battery systems). Using a price-taker model with simulated hourly energy and capacity prices, we simulated the revenue-maximizing dispatch of a range of PV-wind-battery configurations across Texas, from the present through 2050. Holding PV capacity and point-of-interconnection capacity constant, we modeled configurations with varying wind-to-PV capacity ratios and battery-to-PV capacity ratios. We found that coupling PV, wind, and battery technologies allows for more effective utilization of interconnection capacity by increasing capacity factors to 60%–80%+ and capacity credits to close to 100%, depending on battery capacity. We also compared the energy and capacity values of PV-wind and PV-wind-battery systems to the corresponding stability coefficient metric, which describes the location-and configuration-specific complementarity of PV and wind resources. Our results show that the stability coefficient effectively predicts the configuration-location combinations in which a smaller battery component can provide comparable economic performance in a PV-wind-battery system (compared to a PV-battery system). These PV-wind-battery hybrids can help integrate more VRE by providing smoother, more predictable generation and greater flexibility.

Hybrid Manufacturing of Conformal Cooling Channels for Tooling

Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) techniques for hybrid manufacturing have led to new application areas in the manufacturing industry. In the tooling industry, cooling channels are used to enable specific heating and cooling cycles to improve the performance of the process. These internal cooling channels have been designed with limited manufacturing processes in mind, so, until recently, they were often straight in shape for cross-drilling operations and manufactured from a cast billet. To show a novel application of this common technology, a tool with integrated conformal cooling channels was manufactured using hybrid manufacturing (blown-powder DED and CNC machining) techniques. The computer-aided manufacturing strategy used, and the lessons learned are presented and discussed to enable future work in this industrial application space.

Hybridization breaks species barriers in long-term coevolution of a cyanobacterial population

Bacterial species often undergo rampant recombination yet maintain cohesive genomic identity. Ecological differences can generate recombination barriers between species and sustain genomic clusters in the short term. But can these forces prevent genomic mixing during long-term coevolution? Cyanobacteria in Yellowstone hot springs comprise several diverse species that have coevolved for hundreds of thousands of years, providing a rare natural experiment. By analyzing more than 300 single-cell genomes, we show that despite each species forming a distinct genomic cluster, much of the diversity within species is the result of hybridization driven by selection, which has mixed their ancestral genotypes. This widespread mixing is contrary to the prevailing view that ecological barriers can maintain cohesive bacterial species and highlights the importance of hybridization as a source of genomic diversity.

Hybrid Solar Heat Generation Modelling and Cases: Preprint

Renewable thermal energy systems (RTES) harness renewable energy sources to provide services for space heating and cooling, district heating, domestic hot water, and industrial process heat (IPH). The use of low-pressure steam generated by the combustion of fossil fuels is common today to provide process heat for industrial facilities. Solar IPH (SIPH) technologies could economically replace the steam or heat needs at many industrial sites by providing high-temperature pressurized hot water, a heat transfer fluid (HTF) such as synthetic-oil, or direct steam (Kurup and Turchi, 2015). RTES could be hybridized with technology options or combined with the existing heat supply (e.g. fuels), to give options for targeted IPH application and the reduction of fuel consumption. This work has tested hybrid system modelling approaches. Initial results show when a natural gas (NG) burner that feeds an IPH application of 300°C, has both air and NG streams pre-heated with a solar field/RTES exit temperature of 180°C (via an HTF), a 13% NG offset is possible. NG offsets reach up to 26%, when the RTES exit temperatures are at 300°C for a given annual capacity factor of 24%. This can be even higher with addition of thermal energy storage (TES).
