Metasurfaces for photonic devices

Notably, metasurfaces have attracted significant attention owing to their broad capability to achieve exotic electromagnetic responses, and their potential as optical devices for wavefront control. Wide ranging materials may be used to form metasurfaces including noble and non-noble metals, oxides, ceramics, phase change materials, and semiconductors, permitting versatile and reconfigurable properties ideal for applications. In particular, applications that affect the science and technology of light—i.e., photonics—are of interest and will continue to grow in importance as our society becomes more digitally connected, but yet environmentally conscious.

Pattern of perturbations from a coherent quantum inflationary horizon

It is proposed that if quantum states of space-time are coherent on null surfaces, holographic Planck-scale fluctuations of inflationary horizons dominate the formation of primordial scalar curvature perturbations. It is shown that the reduction of quantum states on nearly-spherical emergent horizon surfaces around each observer creates a distinctive pattern whose correlations in the angular domain differ from the standard quantum theory of inflation. Causal constraints are used in a semiclassical model to formulate candidate directional symmetries. It is suggested that this hypothesis could provide a physical explanation for several well known anomalies measured in CMB anisotropy. New exact symmetries are predicted, such as a vanishing temperature correlation function at 90 degrees angular separation, that can be tested with current data.

Rapid retrieval of first-order spatiotemporal distortions for ultrashort laser pulses

High-intensity, ultrashort laser sources are a foundational pillar for High-Energy-Density (HED) physics, and as the repetition-rates of these systems increase, diagnostics must be developed to match their data collection speed. Characterization of any spatiotemporal distortions in the laser pulse is necessary in order to standardize results across facilities. Here, we have previously developed a laser diagnostic called Spatially and Temporally Resolved Intensity and Phase Evaluation Device: Full Information from a Single Hologram, or STRIPED FISH, to measure the full spatiotemporal laser electric field on a single shot. In order to provide rapid feedback, we here adapt the STRIPED FISH retrieval algorithm, which typically has computation times of up to 30 minutes due to the high spatial resolution of the device and its retrieval of the complete four-dimensional pulse field, to distill the key electric field quantities into a handful of scalars for rapid assessment of the pulse's first order distortions. Here, our new, rapid non-iterative retrieval algorithm is validated with simulated and experimental data, and it provides, within seconds, the same first-order information as given by the full analysis. This algorithm is suitable for on-shot assessment of spatiotemporal distortions and can be adapted to assess high repetition-rate laser quality in HED experiments.

The Pollica perspective on the (super)-conformal world

This manuscript samples a series of recent results in the quest for a systematic understanding of the space of conformal field theories, with a particular focus on theories with extended supersymmetry. The large majority of results reported here were presented during the second Pollica summer workshop which took place from June 3–21 2019 and focused on mathematical and geometric tools for superconformal field theories. Furthermore, this manuscript represents in many ways a partial summary of the workshop.

Nonperturbative gravity corrections to bulk reconstruction

Abstract We introduce a new algebraic framework for understanding nonperturbative gravitational aspects of bulk reconstruction with a finite or infinite-dimensional boundary Hilbert space. We use relative entropy equivalence between bulk and boundary with an inclusion of nonperturbative gravitational errors, which give rise to approximate recovery. We utilize the privacy/correctability correspondence to prove that the reconstruction wedge, the intersection of all entanglement wedges in pure and mixed states, manifestly satisfies bulk reconstruction. We explicitly demonstrate that local operators in the reconstruction wedge of a given boundary region can be recovered in a state-independent way for arbitrarily large code subspaces, up to nonperturbative errors in G N . We further discuss state-dependent recovery beyond the reconstruction wedge and the use of the twirled Petz map as a universal recovery channel. We discuss our setup in the context of quantum islands and the information paradox.

An infrared on-shell action and its implications for soft charge fluctuations in asymptotically flat spacetimes

We study the infrared on-shell action of Einstein gravity in asymptotically flat spacetimes (AFSs), obtaining an effective, gauge-invariant boundary action for memory and shockwave spacetimes. We show that the phase space is in both cases parameterized by the leading soft variables in AFSs, thereby extending the equivalence between shockwave and soft commutators to spacetimes with non-vanishing Bondi mass. We then demonstrate that our on-shell action is equal to three quantities studied separately in the literature: (i) the soft supertranslation charge; (ii) the shockwave effective action, or equivalently the modular Hamiltonian; and (iii) the soft effective action. Finally, we compute the quantum fluctuations in the soft supertranslation charge and, assuming the supertranslation parameter may be promoted to an operator, we obtain an area law, consistent with earlier results showing that the modular Hamiltonian has such fluctuations.

Single-shot complete spatiotemporal measurement of terawatt laser pulses

In this work, we demonstrate, for the first time, a single-shot, complete spatiotemporal measurement of pulses from a terawatt-scale, multi-stage-amplified, low repetition-rate laser source. The ultrashort pulse electric field, E(x,y,z,t), is spatiotemporally complex due to distortions that accrue from multiple chirped-pulse amplifiers, which requires a complete characterization. Meanwhile, the instability of the laser source introduces field profiles that vary significantly from pulse to pulse, which, together with the low repetition-rate (15 shots/hour), requires the use of a single-shot measurement technique. To accomplish the measurements, we used a wavelength-multiplexed, digital-holographic technique called Spatially and Temporally Resolved Intensity and Phase Evaluation Device: Full Information from a Single Hologram, specially tailored to measure picosecond pulses at a wavelength of about 1 μm. Specifically, individual pulses from the compact multipulse terawatt laser were measured, with up to 0.3 J per shot of energy and ~2 ps pulse durations, at 1052 nm. With these measurements, we characterized several major spatiotemporal distortions that affect the peak intensity at the laser focus, as well as the pulse-shape instability on a shot-to-shot basis. Our technique allows detailed diagnosis of laser pulses (especially high-order spatiotemporal distortions) and provides straightforward four-dimensional animations of pulse propagation to a focus.

Flying focus with arbitrary directionality for spatiotemporal control of laser intensity

Flying focus techniques produce laser pulses whose focal points travel at arbitrary, controllable velocities. While this flexibility can enhance a broad range of laser-based applications, existing techniques constrain the motion of the focal point to the propagation direction of the pulse. Here, we introduce a flying focus configuration that decouples the motion of the focus from the propagation direction. Here, a chirped laser pulse focused and diffracted by a diffractive lens and grating creates a focal point that can move both along and transverse to the propagation direction. The focal length of the lens, grating period, and chirp can be tuned to control the direction and velocity of the focus. Simulations demonstrate this control for a holographic configuration suited to high-power pulses, in which two off-axis pump beams with different focal lengths encode the equivalent phase of a chromatic lens and grating in a gas or plasma. For low-power pulses, conventional solid-state or adaptive optics can be used instead. Multi-dimensional control over the focal trajectory enables new configurations for applications, including laser wakefield acceleration of ions, nonlinear Thomson scattering, and surface-plasmon emission of THz radiation.

Hot and dense quark-gluon plasma thermodynamics from holographic black holes

We present new results on the equation of state and transition line of hot and dense strongly interacting QCD matter, obtained from a bottom-up Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton holographic model. We considerably expand the previous coverage in baryon densities in this model by implementing new numerical methods to map the holographic black hole solutions onto the QCD phase diagram. We are also able to obtain, for the first time, the first-order phase transition line in a wide region of the phase diagram. Comparisons with the most recent lattice results for the QCD thermodynamics are also presented.

Transport coefficients of the quark-gluon plasma at the critical point and across the first-order line

A bottom-up Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton holographic model is used to compute, for the first time, the behavior of several transport coefficients of the hot and baryon-rich strongly coupled quark-gluon plasma at the critical point and also across the first-order phase transition line in the phase diagram. The observables under study are the shear and bulk viscosities, the baryon and thermal conductivities, the baryon diffusion, the jet quenching parameter $\hat{q}$, as well as the heavy-quark drag force and the Langevin diffusion coefficients. These calculations provide a phenomenologically promising estimate for these coefficients, given that our model quantitatively reproduces lattice QCD thermodynamics results, both at zero and finite baryon density, besides naturally incorporating the nearly perfect fluidity of the quark-gluon plasma. Here we find that the diffusion of baryon charge, and also the shear and bulk viscosities, are suppressed with increasing baryon density, indicating that the medium becomes even closer to perfect fluidity at large densities. On the other hand, the jet quenching parameter and the heavy-quark momentum diffusion are enhanced with increasing density. The observables display a discontinuity gap when crossing the first-order phase transition line, while developing an infinite slope at the critical point. The transition temperatures associated with different transport coefficients differ in the crossover region but are found to converge at the critical point.

Skopi: a simulation package for diffractive imaging of noncrystalline biomolecules

X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) have the ability to produce ultra-bright femtosecond X-ray pulses for coherent diffraction imaging of biomolecules. While the development of methods and algorithms for macromolecular crystallography is now mature, XFEL experiments involving aerosolized or solvated biomolecular samples offer new challenges in terms of both experimental design and data processing. Skopi is a simulation package that can generate single-hit diffraction images for reconstruction algorithms, multi-hit diffraction images of aggregated particles for training machine learning classifiers using labeled data, diffraction images of randomly distributed particles for fluctuation X-ray scattering algorithms, and diffraction images of reference and target particles for holographic reconstruction algorithms. Skopi is a resource to aid feasibility studies and advance the development of algorithms for noncrystalline experiments at XFEL facilities.

PyPhase – a Python package for X-ray phase imaging

X-ray propagation-based imaging techniques are well established at synchrotron radiation and laboratory sources. However, most reconstruction algorithms for such image modalities, also known as phase-retrieval algorithms, have been developed specifically for one instrument by and for experts, making the development and diffusion of such techniques difficult. Here, PyPhase, a free and open-source package for propagation-based near-field phase reconstructions, which is distributed under the CeCILL license, is presented. PyPhase implements some of the most popular phase-retrieval algorithms in a highly modular framework supporting its deployment on large-scale computing facilities. This makes the integration, the development of new phase-retrieval algorithms, and the deployment on different computing infrastructures straightforward. Its capabilities and simplicity are presented by application to data acquired at the synchrotron source MAX IV (Lund, Sweden).

Color symmetry and confinement as an underlying superconformal structure in holographic QCD

Dedicated to the memory of our colleague, Harald Fritzsch, who, together with Murray Gell-Mann, introduced the color quantum number as the exact symmetry responsible for the strong interaction, thus establishing quantum chromodynamics (QCD) as a fundamental non-Abelian gauge theory. A basic understanding of hadron properties, however, such as confinement and the emergence of a mass scale, from first principles QCD has remained elusive: Hadronic characteristics are not explicit properties of the QCD Lagrangian and perturbative QCD, so successful in the large transverse momentum domain, is not applicable at large distances. In this article, we shall examine how this daunting obstacle is overcome in holographic QCD with the introduction of a superconformal symmetry in anti de Sitter (AdS) space which is responsible for confinement and the introduction of a mass scale within the superconformal group. When mapped to light-front coordinates in physical spacetime, this approach incorporates supersymmetric relations between the Regge trajectories of meson, baryon and tetraquark states which can be visualized in terms of specific SU(3) C color representations of quarks. Finally, we will also briefly discuss here the implications of holographic models for QCD color transparency in view of the present experimental interest.

Black hole complementarity and ER/EPR

In this paper, we demonstrate that wormholes must be entangled regardless of asymptotic boundary conditions. By assuming black hole complementarity, we argue that traversable wormholes instantiate entanglement-assisted quantum channels and that this entanglement must be present between the stretched horizons as an initial condition prior to traversability. In conclusion, this result demonstrates the forward direction of the ER/EPR conjectures.

Do holographic CFT states have unique semiclassical bulk duals?

Here, we discuss a situation where a holographic CFT state has multiple semiclassical bulk duals. In our example, a given holographic state has two simple, semiclassical descriptions, one with a closed universe, constructed using the gravitational path integral, and one without a closed universe, constructed using the extrapolate dictionary. This highlights an ambiguity in the AdS/CFT dictionary. We propose various options for resolving this tension although none is perfectly satisfactory. We also discuss what this implies for the black hole interior and the gravitational path integral.

Reconstruction of simulated electrostatic potentials by automatic differentiation-based phase retrieval in electron microscopy imaging

Measuring interfacial electrostatic potentials is vital to understanding many fundamental materials properties. A variety of TEM methods exist for measuring electric potentials from the phase shift produced on an electron wave as it passes through a sample. However, most are either experimentally challenging or poorly suited to resolving nanoscale features. Here, we demonstrate the viability of a simple, automatic differentiation-based exit wave reconstruction from a focal series of images to accurately measure nanoscale electric potentials. Here, the analysis suggests that under optimal measurement conditions, electric potentials can be resolved to less than 0.06 V in magnitude and less than 1 nm in spatial extent.

QCD Equation of State and Phase Diagram from Holographic Black Holes

By using the AdS/CFT correspondence, we construct an Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton model to map the thermodynamics of strongly interacting matter. The holographic model, constrained to reproduce the lattice QCD equation of state at zero baryon chemical potential, predicts a critical end point and a first order phase transition line. We also obtain the equation of state of the model for a large region of the phase diagram. We characterize the crossover transition region by two lines, one associated to the inflection of the second order baryon susceptibility, and another one associated to the minimum of the square of the speed of sound along trajectories of constant entropy per baryon number. We observe that both lines merge at the critical point.
