A direct numerical method for predicting concentration profiles in a turbulent boundary layer over a flat plate

A numerical solution of the turbulent mass transport equation utilizing the concept of eddy diffusivity is presented as an efficient method of investigating turbulent mass transport in boundary layer type flows. A FORTRAN computer program is used to study the two-dimensional diffusion of ammonia, from a line source on the surface, into a turbulent boundary layer over a flat plate. The results of the numerical solution are compared with experimental data to verify the results of the solution. Several other solutions to diffusion problems are presented to illustrate the versatility of the computer program and to provide some insight into the problem of mass diffusion as a whole.

An invariant second-order closure model of the compressible turbulent boundary layer on a flat plate

The development of an invariant model designed expressly for the computation of shear flows is discussed. The model for incompressible layers seeks a second-order closure of the equations for the mean and fluctuating fields. The development of a method for computing the behavior of shear layers in compressible forces is described. The complexity of the analysis is restrained by limiting the consideration to a flat plate boundary layer where the mean pressure can be taken to be constant.

Time dependent shear stress and temperature distribution over an insulated flat plate moving at hypersonic speed.

The laminar two-dimensional flow over a stepwise accelerated flat plate moving with hypersonic speed at zero angle of attack is analysed. The governing equations in the self-similar form are linearized and solved numerically for small times. The solutions obtained are the deviations of the velocity and the temperature profiles from those of steady state. The presented results may be used to find the first order boundary layer induced pressure on the plate.

Exact solutions to Brans-Dicke cosmologies in flat Friedmann universes.

The Brans-Dicke cosmological equations for flat Friedmann-type expanding universes are solved parametrically for time, density, expansion parameter, and scalar field. These results reduce to a previously obtained exact solution to the radiation cosmology. Although the scalar field may be undetectable at the present epoch, it is felt that, if it exists, it must play an important role as one approaches the initial singularity of the cosmology.

A study of microwave leakage through perforated flat plates.

A simple formula useful for predicting leakage through a circular hole array in a metallic flat plate is presented. A correction is given for plate thickness. The formula is applicable to arrays having either a 60-deg (staggered) or 90-deg (square) hole pattern, but is restricted to the case of (1) an obliquely incident plane wave with the E field polarized normal to the plane of incidence, and (2) large transmission loss. When theoretical values were compared to experimental data obtained on test samples having transmission losses greater than 20 dB, the agreement between theory and experiment was typically better than 1 dB at S band and 2 dB at X band.

Stresses near a flat inclusion in bonded dissimilar materials.

The plane elastostatic problem for bonded materials containing a flat inclusion is considered. It is assumed that the inclusion is located parallel to or on the interface and may be rigid or elastic with negligible bending rigidity. The integral equations for various cases are derived and their solutions are described. The stress state around the singular points are investigated and a pair of stress intensity factors similar to that for crack problems are defined. A series of numerical examples for two bonded half planes and for a half plane is worked out. The stress intensity factors are presented as functions of the ratio of the distance from the interface to the length of the inclusion.

Transient-forced convection film boiling on an isothermal flat plate.

Development of a new approach for the solution of transient-forced convection film boiling on an isothermal flat plate using the boundary layer model. The similarity variables are used to convert the governing partial differential equations to ordinary ones. The results of numerical solutions of these ordinary equations indicate that the transient process can be classified as one-dimensional conduction, intermediate, and the steady-state regions. The time required for the one-dimensional conduction and the time necessary to attain a steady-state condition are obtained. The use of local similarity approximations for the intermediate regime facilitates prediction of complete boundary layer growth. Using the ratio of time at any instant to the steady-state time as abscissa, the curves representing the boundary layer growth can be merged into a single mean curve within 5%. Further, the analysis shows that the average rate of heat transfer during transient is 50 to 100% higher than those at steady state. The average rate of vapor convected away is 10 to 15% lower than at steady state while the average rate of accumulation to form the vapor layer is 1 to 14 times larger.

Measurements of Reynolds analogy for a hypersonic turbulent boundary layer on a nonadiabatic flat plate.

The purpose of the described experiment was to obtain simultaneous measurements of skin friction and heat transfer at hypersonic Mach numbers, especially with conditions of considerable heat transfer. The experiment was conducted in air in the Ames Hypersonic Wind Tunnel, in which cold air was passed through an alumina storage heater system and heated to total temperatures ranging from about 670 to 1170 K. The nozzle was contoured to produce a flow at Mach 7.4. Thin-skin heat-transfer gauges were placed at equal intervals along the centerline of a sharp-edge flat plate, which was used as the model. A skin-friction balance and a boundary-layer pitot-pressure rake were mounted on each side of the centerline at a certain distance from the leading edge.

An analysis of the relaxation of laminar boundary layer on a flat plate after passage of an interface with application to expansion-tube flows

The relaxation of the accelerating-gas boundary layer to the test-gas boundary layer over a flat plate in an expansion tube is analyzed. Several combinations of test gas and acceleration gas are considered. The problem is treated in two conically similar limits: (1) when the time lag between the arrival of the shock and the interface at the leading edge of the plate is very large, and (2) when this lag is negligible. The time-dependent laminar-boundary-layer equations of a binary mixture of perfect gases are taken as the flow-governing equations. This coupled set of differential equations, written in terms of the Lam-Crocco variables, has been solved by a line-relaxation finite-difference techniques. The results presented include the Stanton number and the local skin-friction coefficient as functions of shock Mach number and the nondimensional distance-time variable. The results indicate that more than 95 percent of the test-gas boundary layer exists over a length, measured from the leading edge of the plate, equal to about three-tenths of the distance traversed by the interface in the free stream.

Noise generated by impingement of a jet upon a large flat board

Data were obtained on the noise generated by an air jet impinging on a large flat board. The board was large enough so that the flow leaving the edges of the board generated no significant noise. The impingement angle, nozzle shape and size, jet velocity, and the distance from the nozzle to the board were varied in the experiment. Far-field noise data are presented. The nozzle-alone noise contribution to the total noise was generally small and was subtracted from the total, leaving the impingement-only noise. The impingement-only noise was adequately correlated by eighth power of the peak impingement velocity and first power of the impingement area. The spectral data were correlated by a Strouhal number based on the peak impingement velocity and a characteristic impingement diameter.

Separation over a flat plate-wedge configuration at oceanic Reynolds numbers

An experimental study of flow over a two-dimensional flat plate-wedge configuration is presented. The investigation encompasses a range of Reynolds numbers characteristics of conditions encountered by deep submersible oceanic vehicles. Flow separation, similar to that found on high speed aircraft control surfaces, is reported and discussed in light of the laminar or transitional nature of the separated shear layer. As discovered in previous high Mach number studies of plate-wedge or ramp configurations, the dependency of the size of the separated region on free stream Reynolds number is reversed for laminar and transitional types of flow separation.

X-ray reflection efficiency of nickel-coated quartz optical flats

The reflection efficiency of quartz optical flats vacuum coated with 1000-A nickel was evaluated. Of the three vacuum coated samples tested, two had been contaminated during the firing of the Lunar Module Reaction Control System in the vacuum chamber. Measurements were made for 1.54-, 1.79-, and 2.29-A incident radiation. The reflection efficiency of the contaminated samples was reduced by as much as 50 percent for some angles of incidence.
