Post-processing flame-retardant for polyurethane

Treatment of polyurethane form with elastomer formulation after processing makes foam fire resistant without compromising physical properties. In testing, once ignition source is removed, combustion stops. Treatment also prevents molten particle formation, generates no smoke or toxic gases in fire, and does not deteriorate under prolonged exposure to Sun.

The practical impact of elastohydrodynamic lubrication

Elastohydrodynamic lubrication has had its most significant impact on, among all the types of concentrated contact mechanisms, rolling element bearings. EHL technology, through its inclusion in computer codes, now provides us with more effective methods for optimizing bearing design and for predicting bearing life, power loss, temperature and dynamic behavior. Bearing life prediction has advanced to a much more sophisticated level as compared to the calculation of fatigue life based on Lundberg-Palmgren theory. Application of elastohydrodynamics to gearing has, more or less, been limited to the calculation of pitch point film thicknesses. Techniques for calculating film thicknesses over the entire range of tooth meshes for arbitrarily shaped gear teeth (noninvolute, spur, helical, etc.) need to be developed. Elastomer seals with both unidirectional and reciprocating motion offer a fruitful application for the elastohydrodynamics of low modulus materials.

Investigation of Test Methods, Material Properties, and Processes for Solar Cell Encapsulants

The reformulation of a commercial grade of ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer for use as a pottant in solar cell module manufacture was investigated. Potentially successful formulations were prepared by compounding the raw polymer with antioxidants, ultraviolet absorbers and crosslinking agents to yield stabilized and curable compositions. The resulting elastomer was found to offer low cost (approximately $0.80/lb.), low temperature processability, high transparency (91% transmission), and low modulus. Cured specimens of the final formulation endured 4000 hours of fluorescent sunlamp radiation without change which indicates excellent stability.

Curable liquid hydrocarbon prepolymers containing hydroxyl groups and process for producing same

Production of hydroxyl containing curable liquid hydrocarbon prepolymers by ozonizing a high molecular weight saturated hydrocarbon polymer such as polyisobutylene or ethylene propylene rubber is discussed. The ozonized material is reduced using reducing agents, preferably diisobutyl aluminum hydride, to form the hydroxyl containing liquid prepolymers having a substantially lower molecular weight than the parent polymer. The resulting curable liquid hydroxyl containing prepolymers can be poured into a mold and readily cured, with reactants such as toluene diisocyanate, to produce highly stable elastomers having a variety of uses such as binders for solid propellants.

Evaluation and prediction of long term space environmental effects on non-metallic materials

The effects of prolonged spacecraft materials were determined and the results compared with predicted behavior. The adhesion and dielectric properties of poly-thermaleze and therm-amid magnet wire insulation were studied. The tensile properties of Lexan, polyurethane, polyethelyne, lucite, and nylon were studied well as the flexure and tensile characteristic of Adlock 851, a phenolic laminate. The volume resistivity of Cho-seal, a conductive elastomer was also a examined. Tables show the time exposed at thermal vacuum, and the high, low, and average MPA and KSI.

Aging of Magnetic Recording Tape

The paper deals with a study investigating the nature and rates of the hydrolic aging of a wide-band instrumentation magnetic recording tape which employs oxide and backcoat binders made of a polyester urethane elastomer. It was found that the primary mechanism of tape aging and degradation resulted from hydrolysis of its polyester urethane binder.

Preparation of Perfluorinated Imidoylamidoxime Polymers

Perfluorinated imidoylamidoxime polymers with excellent resistance to heat, chemicals and solvents are prepared by condensing a perfluorinated nitrile with a perfluorinated amidoxime in vacuum or inert atmosphere from 20 degrees to 70 degrees C. When both reactants are difunctional, oligomeric or polymeric products are obtained. After cyclization of imidoylamidoxime groups to 1,2,4-oxadiazole linkages, process yields highly resistant elastomers. Competing side reactions are inhibited by low processing temperature.

Improved Cure-in-Place Silicone Adhesives

Two improved cure-in-place silicone-elastomer-based adhesives have low thermal expansion and low thermal conductivity. Adhesives are flexible at low temperature and withstand high temperatures without disintegrating. New ablative compounds were initially developed for in-flight repair of insulating tile on Space Shuttle orbiter. Could find use in other applications requiring high-performance adhesives, such as sealants for solar collectors.

Recent developments in polyimide adhesives at NASA-Langley Research Center

Adhesive development is directed towards elevated temperature applications (200-300 C). Because of thermal stability considerations, the most attractive adhesives for this temperature range are linear and addition polyimides. The linear polymide adhesive research encompassed basic structure-property relationships, solvent studies and formulations to meet various requirements. The most recent research in linear polyimide systems was in the development of thermoplastic systems in an effort to eliminate the undesirable evolution of water classically associated with the cure going through an amide-acid intermediate step in the cure process. Addition polyimide adhesive research was undertaken in order to avoid water evolution during cure. Basic structure-property relationships for these materials led to an adhesive which was used extensively for high temperature adhesive needs. Since addition systems are of a highly crosslinked nature, they are not as resistant to impact as their linear counterparts. In order to overcome this problem, research was done in the area of elastomer-toughening these polymers.

Bifunctional monomers having terminal oxime and cyano or amidine groups

The preparation of crosslinked 1,2,4-oxadiazole elastomers is described. The technique involves thermally condensing (1) a monomer having the formula H2N(HON)C-R-Q, wherein Q is a triazine ring-forming groups such as nitrile or amidine or a mixture of such group with amidoxime, or (2) a mixture of the same monomer with R(C(NOH)NH2)2, with R in these formulas standing for a bivalent organic radical. In the monomer charge, the overall proportions of amidoxime groups to triazine ring-forming groups varies depending on the extent of crosslinking desired in the final polymer.

Development of flame and smoke retardant thermoplastic molding compounds

Compositions of polypropylene and ethylene-acrylic acid resins filled with high levels of alumina trihydrate of magnesium hydroxide were examined for smoke generation and impact resistance. Best results were obtained using alumina trihydrate coated with a low modulus elastomer, and ethylene-acrylic acid resin. Addition of polyvinyl alcohol fibers to the filled resin improves impact resistance and causes somewhat of an increase in smoke evolution.

Encapsulation of PV cells using silicone materials

The use of silicone materials as thin conformal coatings for the protection of photovoltaic cells is investigated. Five silicone materials ranging from soft elastomers to high modulus resins were evaluated after exposure to UV radiation, outdoor weathering, thermal cycling at high humidity and temperature cycling from -40 C to 90 C. The effects of these tests were monitored by periodically measuring the output of two-cell circuit strings encapsulated with the various materials, and one exceptional silicone coating for which no significant changes in cell output were noted after 300 days was chosen as the best of the candidates. Because only a thin coating of the substance is needed, material costs 60% lower than those of previous encapsulants are now possible.
