Measurement of the cross sections of $$ {e}^{+}{e}^{-}\to {K}^{-}{\overline{\Xi}}^{+}\Lambda /{\Sigma}^0 $$ at center-of-mass energies between 3.510 and 4.914 GeV

Abstract Usinge + e − collision data collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider at center-of-mass energies between 3.510 and 4.914 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 25 fb −1 , we measure the Born cross sections for the process$$ {e}^{+}{e}^{-}\to {K}^{-}{\overline{\Xi}}^{+}\Lambda /{\Sigma}^0 $$ e + e − → K − Ξ ¯ + Λ / Σ 0 at thirty-five energy points with a partial-reconstruction strategy. By fitting the dressed cross sections of$$ {e}^{+}{e}^{-}\to {K}^{-}{\overline{\Xi}}^{+}\Lambda /{\Sigma}^0 $$ e + e − → K − Ξ ¯ + Λ / Σ 0 , evidence for$$ \psi (4160)\to {K}^{-}{\overline{\Xi}}^{+}\Lambda $$ ψ 4160 → K − Ξ ¯ + Λ is found for the first time with a significance of 4.4σ, including systematic uncertainties. No evidence for other possible resonances is found. In addition, the products of electronic partial width and branching fraction for all assumed resonances decaying into$$ {K}^{-}{\overline{\Xi}}^{+}\Lambda /{\Sigma}^0 $$ K − Ξ ¯ + Λ / Σ 0 are determined.

$J/\psi $-p scattering length from the total and differential photoproduction cross sections

The J/ψ-p scattering length, αJ/ψp, can be extracted from the J/ψ photoproduction cross section near threshold using the Vector Meson Dominance (VMD) model to relate the reaction γp→J/ψp to J/ψp→J/ψp. Such estimates based on experimental data result in values for |αJ/ψp|, which are much lower than most of the theoretical predictions. In this work, we study the relations between the different results, depending on the use of the total or the differential cross sections, and the method of extrapolating the data to threshold in the case of a low-statistics data sample, such as the near threshold J/ψ photoproduction dataset. We estimate a range for |αJ/ψp| of 0.003–0.025 fm as extracted from experimental data within the VMD model and discuss possible reasons for such lower values compared to the theoretical results.

Final Design for Thermal/Epithermal eXperiments using High 240 Pu Content Plutonium/Aluminum Zero Power Research Reactor Plates with Polyethylene Moderator (IER 520 Final Design CED-2 Report)

The US Department of Energy Nuclear Criticality Safety Program (NCSP) convened a multinational Thermal Epithermal eXperiments (TEX) meeting in July of 2011 to discuss the data and experimental needs of criticality safety practitioners. The number one and two priority integral experiment data needs were for 239 Pu and 240 Pu, with special emphasis on cross section performance in the intermediate energy range (from 0.625 eV to 100 keV). LLNL measured five critical configurations with LANL for the plutonium test bed (IER-184) and published the experiments as International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project evaluation PUMET-MIXED-002. Modeling of the benchmark configurations using ENDF/B-VIII.0 nuclear data showed significant overprediction of reactivity for configurations that had a large percentage of fissions in the intermediate energy regime. This report documents a variation on the TEX plutonium test bed to provide a test of 240 Pu cross sections, with sensitivity of the configuration to 240 Pu radiative capture and fission cross sections a priority for the design.

Muon-Neutrino Charged-Current Cross Sections from MicroBooNE: First Simultaneous Measurements of Final States with and without Protons for Muon-Neutrino Scattering on Argon

A detailed understanding of muon neutrino charged-current interactions on argon is crucial to the study of neutrino oscillations in current and future experiments using liquid argon time projection chambers. To help fill this need, MicroBooNE has produced a comprehensive set of cross section measurements which simultaneously probe the leptonic and hadronic systems by dividing the inclusive channel into final states with and without protons. Data-driven model validation utilizing the conditional constraint formalism is employed to detect mismodeling that may bias the nominal flux averaged cross section results, which are extracted with the Wiener-SVD unfolding method. The results are compared to widely used event generator predictions revealing significant mismodeling of final states without protons, possibly due to insufficient treatment of final state interactions. These are first differential muon neutrino-argon cross section measurements made simultaneously for final states with and without protons and provide novel information that will help stimulate the improvement of event generator modeling.

Measurement of $J/ψ$ production cross-sections in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5 TeV

The production cross-sections of J/ψ mesons in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 5 TeV are measured using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.13 ± 0.18 pb -1 , collected by the LHCb experiment. The cross-sections are measured differentially as a function of transverse momentum, p T , and rapidity, y, and separately for J/ψ mesons produced promptly and from beauty hadron decays (nonprompt). With the assumption of unpolarised J/ψ mesons, the production cross-sections integrated over the kinematic range 0 < p T < 20 GeV/c and 2.0 < y < 4.5 are σ prompt J/Ψ = 8.154 ± 0.010 ± 0.283 μb, σnonprompt J/Ψ = 0.820 ± 0.003 ± 0.034 μb, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. These cross-sections are compared with those at $\sqrt{s}$ = 8 TeV and 13 TeV, and are used to update the measurement of the nuclear modification factor in proton-lead collisions for J/ψ mesons at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5 TeV. The results are compared with theoretical predictions.

Extracting the number of short-range correlated nucleon pairs from inclusive electron scattering data

The extraction of the relative abundances of short-range correlated (SRC) nucleon pairs from inclusive electron scattering is studied using the generalized contact formalism (GCF) with several nuclear interaction models. GCF calculations can reproduce the observed scaling of the cross-section ratios for nuclei relative to deuterium at high xB and large Q 2 , a 2 =(σ A /A)/(σ d /2). In the nonrelativistic instant-form formulation, the calculation is very sensitive to the model parameters and only reproduces the data using parameters that are inconsistent with ab initio many-body calculations. Using a light-cone GCF formulation significantly decreases this sensitivity and improves the agreement with ab initio calculations. The ratio of similar mass isotopes, such as 40 Ca and 48 Ca, should be sensitive to the nuclear asymmetry dependence of SRCs, but is found to also be sensitive to low-energy nuclear structure. Thus the empirical association of SRC pair abundances with the measured a2 values is only accurate to about 20%. Finally, improving this will require cross-section calculations that reproduce the data while properly accounting for both nuclear structure and relativistic effects.

MONTE CARLO CROSS SECTION LOOKUP KERNEL FOR THE CEREBRAS WSE-2 IN CSL

This is a small kernel that was used to collect data for an upcoming paper. We would like to have the code be open source so that the reviewers (and then readers) of the paper can see the whole code, and can reproduce/verify our results. This is not a fully featured application, it cannot produce any useful simulation results, it just executes a small abstracted kernel using synthetic data. The purpose of the kernel is to understand the basic performance characteristics of an HPC kernel on novel AI accelerator architectures. The main kernel is written in the CSL coding language for use with the Cerebras WSE-2 AI accelerator. The kernel represented is the Monte Carlo cross section lookup kernel, which is a small kernel used by the Monte Carlo neutral particle transport algorithm. There is also a baseline kernel written in CUDA that we will include in the repository to form a basis for comparing the WSE-2 to GPU.

Energy Dependence Analysis of Neutrino-Nucleus Interactions in Scintillator for MINERvA

This thesis is on the intrinsic energy dependence in neutrino-nucleus interaction models, especially quasielastic scattering and 2p2h process, and the implications for understanding data from MINERvA, NOvA, and DUNE. Neutrino-nucleus interactions are modeled using fve structure functions, W1, W2, W3, W4 and W5, and each structure function contributes diferently to the energy dependence once it enters the cross-section calculations. The energy independent term in the calculations contains only W2 and the next lower order term (of the order 1/E) contains W3 also. In this thesis, we show that W2 is good enough to describe MINERvA data and energy dependence coming from the cross-section directly is small. However, W3 will be signifcant for lower energy experiments such as NOvA and DUNE (especially at and below the oscillation maximum). We have also developed a method to extract structure functions directly from MINERvA data though we find that systematic uncertainties present in the data are too big to successfully determine 1/E Term. In addition to this, we have applied muon angle cuts on MINERvA data and MC, which have their own energy dependent effects. An apparent energy dependent discrepancy comes from known shortcomings especially in the pion production model. Finally, because the energy dependence analysis has similarities to the low-$\nu$ method, we have evaluated discrepancies between the data and MC in light of diferent fux constraint techniques. The results suggest including MINERvA s low-$\nu$ method constraint is an improvement.

Meas. K+ -Ar Total Inelastic Cross Section at ProtoDUNE-SP

ProtoDUNE-SP is a single-phase liquid argon time projection chamber that took hadron test beam data in 2018. The test beam included positively charged kaons with test beam momenta of 6 GeV/c and 7 GeV/c, providing a sample to study kaons to benefit future DUNE proton decay and neutrino interaction studies with kaons in the final state. The total inelastic cross section of a positively charged kaon was measured at these test beam settings using the LArIAT thin-slice method of dividing the wires of the time projection chamber into target slices for calculating the cross section, which leverages the monolithic quality of liquid argon detectors. A Bayesian-like unfolding method using RooUnfold was applied to both the incident and interacting slice distributions to measure the cross sections at both test beam momenta. The talk will discuss the method of unfolding, optimization studies for unfolding, and applying systematic uncertainties using a LArIAT-style hadronic cross section using unfolding to extract a kaon total inelastic cross section.

Wind turbine blade design with airfoil shape control using invertible neural networks

Wind turbine blade design is a highly multidisciplinary process that involves aerodynamics, structures, controls, manufacturing, costs, and other considerations. More efficient blade designs can be found by controlling the airfoil cross-sectional shapes simultaneously with the bulk blade twist and chord distributions. Prior work has focused on incorporating panel-based aerodynamic solvers with a blade design framework to allow for airfoil shape control within the design loop in a tractable manner. Including higher fidelity aerodynamic solvers, such as computational fluid dynamics, makes the design problem computationally intractable. In this work, we couple an invertible neural network trained on high-fidelity airfoil aerodynamic data to a turbine design framework to enable the design of airfoil cross sections within a larger blade design problem. We detail the methodology of this coupled framework and showcase its efficacy by aerostructurally redesigning the IEA 15-MW reference wind turbine blade. The coupled approach reduces the cost of energy by 0.9% compared to a more conventional design approach. This work enables the inclusion of high-fidelity aerodynamic data earlier in the design process, reducing cycle time and increasing certainty in the performance of the optimal design.

First Measurement of Differential Charged Current Quasielastic-like $\nu_\mu$–Argon Scattering Cross Sections in Kinematic Imbalance Variables with the MicroBooNE Detector

We report the first measurement of flux-integrated multi-differential cross sections for charged-current events with muon neutrinos scattering on argon with solely a muon and a single proton in the final state as a function of kinematic imbalance variables. The measurement was carried out using the Booster Neutrino Beam at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory within the MicroBooNE Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber detector with an exposure of 6.79 × 10 20 protons on target. Events were selected to enhance the contribution of charged-current mesonless interactions with one proton detected in the final state. The data discussed here are reported in terms of multi-differential cross sections in kinematic imbalance variables, which are generally sensitive to nuclear effects. The double-differential results in these variables can provide an excellent handle to disentagle specific nuclear aspects not easily isolated via single differential cross sections. Our results pave a path towards identifying regions of the phase-space where future interaction modeling development and Monte Carlo neutrino generator tuning efforts should concentrate.

Photoionization from the Xe 4d orbitals of XeF 2

Here, we present a comparison of the photoionization dynamics of the 4d shell of XeF 2 from threshold to 250 eV to those of the prototypical 4d shell of atomic Xe. The new experimental data include spin–orbit and ligand-field-resolved partial cross sections, photoelectron angular distributions, branching fractions, and lifetime widths for the 4d-hole states. The spin–orbit branching fractions and angular distributions are remarkably similar to the corresponding distributions from atomic Xe across a broad energy interval that includes both the intense shape resonance in the f continuum and a Cooper minimum in the same channel. The angular distributions and branching fractions are also in reasonably good agreement with our first-principles theoretical calculations on XeF 2 . Data are also presented on the lifetime widths of the substate-resolved 4d-hole states of XeF 2 . While the trends in the widths are similar to those in the earlier experimental and theoretical work, the linewidths are considerably smaller than in the previous measurements, which may require some reinterpretation of the decay mechanism. Finally, we present new data and an analysis of the Auger electron spectra for ionization above the 4d thresholds and resonant Auger spectra for several pre-edge features.

Observation of e + e – → ω χ b J ( 1 P ) and Search for X b → ω Υ ( 1 S ) at s near 10.75 GeV

We study the processes $e^{+}e^{–} → ωχ_{bJ}$(1P) (J=0, 1, or 2) using samples at center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}$ = 10.701, 10.745, and 10.805 GeV, corresponding to 1.6, 9.8, and 4.7 fb –1 of integrated luminosity, respectively. These data were collected with the Belle II detector during special operations of the SuperKEKB collider above the Υ(4S) resonance. We report the first observation of $ωχ_{bJ}$(1P) signals at $\sqrt{s}$ = 10.745 GeV. By combining Belle II data with Belle results at $\sqrt{s}$ = 10.867 GeV, we find energy dependencies of the Born cross sections for $e^{+}e^{–} → ωχ_{b1,b2}$(1P) to be consistent with the shape of the Υ(10753) state. These data indicate that the internal structures of the Υ(10753) and Υ(10860) states may differ. Including data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 10.653 GeV, we also search for the bottomonium equivalent of the X(3872) state decaying into ωΥ(1S). No significant signal is observed for masses between 10.45 and 10.65 GeV/c 2 .

Measurements of the inclusive W and Z boson production cross sections and their ratios in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13.6$ TeV

Measurements are presented of the W and Z boson production cross sections in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13.6 TeV. Data collected in 2022 and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.01 fb −1 with one or two identified muons in the final state are analyzed. The results for the products of total inclusive cross sections and branching fractions for muonic decays of W and Z bosons are 11.93 ± 0.08 (syst) ± 0.17 (lumi) $^{+0.07}_{−0.07}$ (acceptance) nb for W + boson production, 8.86 ± 0.06 (syst) ± 0.12 (lumi) $^{+0.05}_{−0.06}$ (acceptance) nb for W − boson production, and 2.021 ± 0.009 (syst) ± 0.028 (lumi) $^{+0.011}_{−0.013}$ (acceptance) nb for the Z boson production in the dimuon mass range of 60–120 GeV, all with negligible statistical uncertainties. Furthermore, the corresponding fiducial cross sections, as well as cross section ratios for both fiducial and total phase space, are provided. The ratios include charge-separated results for W boson production (W + and W − ) and the sum of the two contributions (W ± ), each relative to the measured Z boson production cross section. Additionally, the ratio of the measured cross sections for W + and W − boson production is reported. All measurements are in agreement with theoretical predictions, calculated at next-to-next-to-leading order accuracy in quantum chromodynamics.

Measurement of the production cross section of prompt $ {\Xi}_{\mathrm{c}}^0 $ baryons at midrapidity in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 5.02 TeV

The transverse momentum (p T ) differential cross section of the charm-strange baryon $ {\Xi}_{\mathrm{c}}^0 $ is measured at midrapidity (|y| < 0.5) via its semileptonic decay into e + Ξ - ν e in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The ratio of the p T -differential $ {\Xi}_{\mathrm{c}}^0 $-baryon and D 0 -meson production cross sections is also reported. The measurements are compared with simulations with different tunes of the PYTHIA 8 event generator, with predictions from a statistical hadronisation model (SHM) with a largely augmented set of charm-baryon states beyond the current lists of the Particle Data Group, and with models including hadronisation via quark coalescence. The p T -integrated cross section of prompt $ {\Xi}_{\mathrm{c}}^0 $-baryon production at midrapidity is also reported, which is used to calculate the baryon-to-meson ratio $ {\Xi}_{\mathrm{c}}^0 $/D 0 = 0.20 ± 0.04 (stat.)$^{+0.08}_{-0.07}$ (syst.). These results provide an additional indication of a modification of the charm fragmentation from e + e - and e - p collisions to pp collisions.

Toward virtual thin-beam 𝜈 cross-section measurements: A feasibility study of 𝜈-Ar interaction analysis with DUNE-PRISM

Neutrino-nucleus cross section measurements are critical for future neutrino oscillation analyses. However, our models to describe them require further refinement, and a deeper understanding of the underlying physics is essential for future neutrino oscillation experiments to realize their ambitious physics goals. Current neutrino cross section measurements provide clear deficiencies in neutrino interaction modeling, but almost all are reported averaged over broad neutrino fluxes, rendering their interpretation challenging. Using the concept of deep underground neutrino experiment-precision reaction independent spectrum measurement (DUNE-PRISM)—a movable near detector that samples multiple off axis positions—neutrino interaction measurements can be used to construct narrow virtual fluxes (less than 100 MeV wide). These fluxes can be used to extract charged-current neutrino-nucleus cross sections as functions of outgoing lepton kinematics within specific neutrino energy ranges. Based on a dedicated simulation with realistic event statistics and flux-related systematic uncertainties, but assuming an almost-perfect detector, we run a feasibility study demonstrating how DUNE-PRISM data can be used to measure muon neutrino charged-current integrated and differential cross sections over narrow fluxes. We find that this approach enables a largely model-independent reconstruction of powerful observables, including energy transfer, typically accessible only in electron scattering measurements, but that large exposures may be required for differential cross section measurements with few-percentage statistical uncertainties.

Measurement of differential ZZ + jets production cross sections in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

Diboson production in association with jets is studied in the fully leptonic final states, pp → (Z/γ$^{*}$)(Z/γ$^{*}$) + jets → 2ℓ2ℓ′ + jets, (ℓ, ℓ′ = e or μ) in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{−1}$ collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. Differential distributions and normalized differential cross sections are measured as a function of jet multiplicity, transverse momentum p$_{T}$, pseudorapidity η, invariant mass and ∆η of the highest-p$_{T}$ and second-highest-p$_{T}$ jets, and as a function of invariant mass of the four-lepton system for events with various jet multiplicities. These differential cross sections are compared with theoretical predictions that mostly agree with the experimental data. However, in a few regions we observe discrepancies between the predicted and measured values. Further improvement of the predictions is required to describe the ZZ+jets production in the whole phase space.
