Mitigating CaCO 3 crystal nucleation and growth through continuous ion displacement via alternating electric fields

Mineral crystal formation poses a challenge on surfaces (e.g., heat exchangers, pipes, membranes, etc.) in contact with super-saturated fluids. Applying alternating currents (AC) to such surfaces can prevent surface crystallization under certain conditions. Here, we demonstrate that ion displacement induced by periodic charging and discharging of the electrical double layer (EDL) inhibits both heterogeneous and homogeneous nucleation (and crystal growth) of CaCO 3 . Titanium sheets (meant to simulate metallic heat exchanger surfaces) are immersed in super-saturated CaCO 3 solutions with a saturation index >11. We show that at relatively high AC frequencies, incomplete EDL formation leads to an alternating electric field that propagates far into the bulk solution, inducing rapid ion migration that overwhelms the Brownian motion of ions. Electrochemical characterization reveals EDL charging/discharging under AC conditions that greatly inhibits precipitation. Operating at 4 V pp , 0.1–10 Hz reduces turbidity by over 96% and reduces CaCO 3 coverage on the metal plates by over 92%. Based on electrokinetic and crystallization models, the ion displacement velocity (exceeding the mean Brownian velocity) and displacement length disrupts ion collision and crystal nucleation. Overall, the technique has potential for preventing mineral crystal formation in heat exchangers and many other industrially relevant systems.

Continuous observations of the surface energy budget and meteorology over the Arctic sea ice during MOSAiC

Abstract The Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) was a yearlong expedition supported by the icebreaker R/V Polarstern , following the Transpolar Drift from October 2019 to October 2020. The campaign documented an annual cycle of physical, biological, and chemical processes impacting the atmosphere-ice-ocean system. Of central importance were measurements of the thermodynamic and dynamic evolution of the sea ice. A multi-agency international team led by the University of Colorado/CIRES and NOAA-PSL observed meteorology and surface-atmosphere energy exchanges, including radiation; turbulent momentum flux; turbulent latent and sensible heat flux; and snow conductive flux. There were four stations on the ice, a 10 m micrometeorological tower paired with a 23/30 m mast and radiation station and three autonomous Atmospheric Surface Flux Stations. Collectively, the four stations acquired ~928 days of data. This manuscript documents the acquisition and post-processing of those measurements and provides a guide for researchers to access and use the data products.

Enabling technologies for the continuous electrically driven conversion of CO 2 and water to multi-carbon products at high current densities

Here, we demonstrate greatly improved conversion of CO 2 using a gas diffusion electrode (GDE) with flowing electrolyte configuration for CO 2 gas delivery in combination with a high surface area nickel phosphide electrocatalyst. This configuration achieves 40–50% selectivity for total carbon products over H 2 formation (HER) at total current densities ranging from 50 to 300 mA cm -2 . We developed a soft-templating method using CTAB detergent micelles for synthesis of phase-pure Ni 2 P, achieving a 260-fold larger surface area (BET) and porous sponge-like morphology that produces stable currents. This catalyst produces mainly one C-product, methylglyoxal (MG, C 3 H 4 O 2 ) with 38–47% overall selectivity, the highest reported selectivity for a 12-electron reduction product. The versatile soft-templating method for electrocatalyst synthesis uses low-temperature (185 °C) that is permissive for incorporation of co-catalysts that are otherwise destroyed by the high temperatures used in traditional solid-state synthesis (SSS). The non-porous Ni 2 P-SSS catalyst produces mainly H 2 at these current densities. Achieving these high currents and C/H selectivity benefits from use of hydrophobic polymers as co-catalyst binders (cationic = Nafion, anionic = PFAEM and neutral = PTFE) to improve CO 2 conversion. PFAEM is the better ionomer for the CO 2 RR at high current density, postulated as due to suppressing CO 2 conversion to inactive bicarbonate. Precipitation of the carbon products as a polycarbonate polymer occurs at high currents.

Continuous flow photochemical synthesis of metal–ceramic composite microparticles

We developed a UV-assisted microfluidic system to synthesize FeCrAl–Al 2 O 3 composite microparticles for additive manufacturing. Here, the system ensures precise particle size, morphology, and elemental distribution control. Increasing the dispensing pressure while keeping the oil flow rate constant resulted in larger microparticles. Laser fusing revealed FeCrAl and Al 2 O 3 phases, showing their potential as feedstocks for 3D printed heterogeneous materials such as FeCrAl/Al 2 O 3 bi-phase materials.

Continuous and discrete phasor analysis of binned or time-gated periodic decays

The time-resolved analysis of periodically excited luminescence decays by the phasor method in the presence of time-gating or binning is revisited. Analytical expressions for discrete configurations of square gates are derived, and the locus of the phasors of such modified periodic single-exponential decays is compared to the canonical universal semicircle. The effects of instrument response function offset, decay truncation, and gate shape are also discussed. Finally, modified expressions for the phase and modulus lifetimes are provided for some simple cases. A discussion of a modified phasor calibration approach is presented, and an illustration of the new concepts with examples from the literature concludes this work.

The quest for improved air quality may push China to continue its CO 2 reduction beyond the Paris Commitment

China is challenged with the simultaneous goals of improving air quality and mitigating climate change. The “Beautiful China” strategy, launched by the Chinese government in 2020, requires that all cities in China attain 35 μg/m 3 or below for annual mean concentration of PM 2.5 (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter less than 2.5 μm) by 2035. Meanwhile, China adopts a portfolio of low-carbon policies to meet its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) pledged in the Paris Agreement. Previous studies demonstrated the co-benefits to air pollution reduction from implementing low-carbon energy policies. Pathways for China to achieve dual targets of both air quality and CO 2 mitigation, however, have not been comprehensively explored. Here, we couple an integrated assessment model and an air quality model to evaluate air quality in China through 2035 under the NDC scenario and an alternative scenario (Co-Benefit Energy [CBE]) with enhanced low-carbon policies. Results indicate that some Chinese cities cannot meet the PM 2.5 target under the NDC scenario by 2035, even with the strictest end-of-pipe controls. Achieving the air quality target would require further reduction in emissions of multiple air pollutants by 6 to 32%, driving additional 22% reduction in CO 2 emissions relative to the NDC scenario. Results show that the incremental health benefit from improved air quality of CBE exceeds 8 times the additional costs of CO 2 mitigation, attributed particularly to the cost-effective reduction in household PM 2.5 exposure. The additional low-carbon energy polices required for China’s air quality targets would lay an important foundation for its deep decarbonization aligned with the 2 °C global temperature target.

Continuous measurements of volatile gases as detection of algae crop health

Wide adoption of algae cultivation to produce environmentally sustainable biofuels and fine chemicals is currently hampered by large losses (10 to 30%) incurred by grazer infections. We show the usage of real-time chemical ionization mass spectrometry to rapidly identify gaseous indicators of grazer infections in cyanobacteria cultures. Grazing was detected significantly faster (up to 3 d) using real-time mass spectrometry than the current methods of microscopy and qPCR. By employing this technology, cultivators may be empowered to treat grazer infestations sooner, thereby protecting the crop and enhancing profitability.

A Second Moment Method for k -Eigenvalue Acceleration with Continuous Diffusion and Discontinuous Transport Discretizations

The second moment method is a linear acceleration technique that couples the transport equation to a diffusion equation with transport-dependent additive closures. The resulting low-order diffusion equation can be discretized independent of the transport discretization, unlike diffusion synthetic acceleration, and is symmetric positive definite, unlike quasidiffusion. While this method has been shown to be comparable to quasidiffusion in iterative performance for fixed source and time-dependent problems, it is largely unexplored as an eigenvalue problem acceleration scheme due to the belief that the resulting inhomogeneous source makes the problem ill posed. Recently, a preliminary feasibility study was performed on the second moment method for eigenvalue problems. The results suggested comparable performance to quasidiffusion and more robust performance than diffusion synthetic acceleration. This work extends the initial study to more realistic reactor problems using state-of-the-art discretization techniques. Finally, the results in this paper show that the second moment method is more computationally efficient than its alternatives on complex reactor problems with unstructured meshes.
