GW190425: Observation of a Compact Binary Coalescence with Total Mass ~ 3.4 M ⊙

On 2019 April 25, the LIGO Livingston detector observed a compact binary coalescence with signal-to-noise ratio 12.9. The Virgo detector was also taking data that did not contribute to detection due to a low signal-to-noise ratio, but were used for subsequent parameter estimation. The 90% credible intervals for the component masses range from 1.12 to 2.52 M ⊙ (1.46-1.87 M ⊙ if we restrict the dimensionless component spin magnitudes to be smaller than 0.05). These mass parameters are consistent with the individual binary components being neutron stars. However, both the source-frame chirp mass 1.44 +0.02 -0.02 M ⊙ and the total mass 3.4 +0.3 -0.1 M ⊙ of this system are significantly larger than those of any other known binary neutron star (BNS) system. The possibility that one or both binary components of the system are black holes cannot be ruled out from gravitational-wave data. We discuss possible origins of the system based on its inconsistency with the known Galactic BNS population. Under the assumption that the signal was produced by a BNS coalescence, the local rate of neutron star mergers is updated to 250-2810 Gpc -3 yr -1 .

IceCube Search for Neutrinos Coincident with Compact Binary Mergers from LIGO-Virgo’s First Gravitational-wave Transient Catalog

Using the IceCube Neutrino Observatory, we search for high-energy neutrino emission coincident with compact binary mergers observed by the LIGO and Virgo gravitational-wave (GW) detectors during their first and second observing runs. In this paper, we present results from two searches targeting emission coincident with the sky localization of each GW event within a 1000 s time window centered around the reported merger time. One search uses a model-independent unbinned maximum-likelihood analysis, which uses neutrino data from IceCube to search for pointlike neutrino sources consistent with the sky localization of GW events. The other uses the Low-Latency Algorithm for Multi-messenger Astrophysics, which incorporates astrophysical priors through a Bayesian framework and includes LIGO-Virgo detector characteristics to determine the association between the GW source and the neutrinos. No significant neutrino coincidence is seen by either search during the first two observing runs of the LIGO-Virgo detectors. We set upper limits on the time-integrated neutrino emission within the 1000 s window for each of the 11 GW events. These limits range from 0.02 to 0.7 GeV cm -2 . We also set limits on the total isotropic equivalent energy, E iso , emitted in high-energy neutrinos by each GW event. These limits range from 1.7 × 10 51 to 1.8 × 10 55 erg. We conclude with an outlook for LIGO-Virgo observing run O3, during which both analyses are running in real time.

A Statistical Standard Siren Measurement of the Hubble Constant from the LIGO/Virgo Gravitational Wave Compact Object Merger GW190814 and Dark Energy Survey Galaxies

We present a measurement of the Hubble constant H 0 using the gravitational wave (GW) event GW190814, which resulted from the coalescence of a 23 M ⊙ black hole with a 2.6 M ⊙ compact object, as a standard siren. No compelling electromagnetic counterpart has been identified for this event; thus our analysis accounts for thousands of potential host galaxies within a statistical framework. The redshift information is obtained from the photometric redshift (photo- z ) catalog from the Dark Energy Survey. The luminosity distance is provided by the LIGO/Virgo gravitational wave sky map. Since this GW event has the second-smallest localization volume after GW170817, GW190814 is likely to provide the best constraint on cosmology from a single standard siren without identifying an electromagnetic counterpart. Furthermore, our analysis uses photo- z probability distribution functions and corrects for photo- z biases. We also reanalyze the binary black hole GW170814 within this updated framework. We explore how our findings impact the H 0 constraints from GW170817, the only GW merger associated with a unique host galaxy. From a combination of GW190814, GW170814, and GW170817, our analysis yields H 0 =72.0$_{+12}^{–8.2}$ km s -1 Mpc -1 (68% highest-density interval, HDI) for a prior in H 0 uniform between [20 and 140] km s -1 Mpc -1 . The addition of GW190814 and GW170814 to GW170817 improves the 68% HDI from GW170817 alone by ~18%, showing how well-localized mergers without counterparts can provide a significant contribution to standard siren measurements, provided that a complete galaxy catalog is available at the location of the event.

A New Constraint on the Nuclear Equation of State from Statistical Distributions of Compact Remnants of Supernovae

Abstract Understanding how matter behaves at the highest densities and temperatures is a major open problem in both nuclear physics and relativistic astrophysics. Our understanding of such behavior is often encapsulated in the so-called high-temperature nuclear equation of state (EOS), which influences compact binary mergers, core-collapse supernovae, and other phenomena. Our focus is on the type (either black hole or neutron star) and mass of the remnant of the core collapse of a massive star. For each six candidates of equations of state, we use a very large suite of spherically symmetric supernova models to generate a sample of synthetic populations of such remnants. We then compare these synthetic populations to the observed remnant population. Our study provides a novel constraint on the high-temperature nuclear EOS and describes which EOS candidates are more or less favored by an information-theoretic metric.

Compact Steep Spectrum Radio Sources with Enhanced Star Formation Are Smaller Than 10 kpc

Compact steep spectrum (CSS) radio sources are active galactic nuclei (AGN) that have radio jets propagating only on galactic scales, defined as having projected linear size (LS) of up to 20 kpc. CSS sources are generally hosted by massive early-type galaxies with little ongoing star formation; however, a small fraction are known to have enhanced star formation. Using archival data from the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty cm survey, the Very Large Array Sky Survey, and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we identify a volume-limited sample of 166 CSS sources at z < 0.2 with L 1.4 GHz > 10 24 W Hz -1 . Comparing the star formation rates and linear sizes of these CSS sources, we find that the ≈14% of CSS sources with specific star formation rates above 0.01 Gyr -1 all have LS < 10 kpc. We discuss the possible mechanisms driving this result, concluding that it is likely the excess star formation in these sources occurred in multiple bursts and ceased prior to the AGN jet being triggered.

Evaluating the Potential to Constrain Dark Matter Annihilation with Fermi-LAT Observations of Ultrafaint Compact Stellar Systems

Recent results from numerical simulations and models of galaxy formation suggest that recently discovered ultrafaint compact stellar systems (UFCSs) in the halo of the Milky Way (MW) may be some of the smallest and faintest galaxies. If this is the case, these systems would be attractive targets for indirect searches of weakly interacting massive particle dark matter (DM) annihilation due to their relative proximity and high expected DM content. In this study, we analyze 14.3 yr of γ-ray data collected by the Fermi-Large Area Telescope coincident with 26 UFCSs. No significant excess γ-ray emission is detected, and we present γ-ray flux upper limits for these systems. Assuming that the UFCSs are DM-dominated galaxies consistent with being among the faintest and least massive MW dwarf spheroidal (dSph) satellite galaxies, we derive the projected sensitivity for a DM annihilation signal. We find that observations of UFCSs have the potential to yield some of the most powerful constraints on DM annihilation, with sensitivity comparable to observations of known dSphs and the Galactic center. This result emphasizes the importance of precise kinematic studies of UFCSs to empirically determine their DM content.

Search for New Physics with the Compact Muon Solenoid Experiment and QIS-enabled Technology

Understanding the fundamental nature of dark matter (DM)---its cosmological origin, constituents, and interactions---is one of the most important questions in fundamental science today. In this thesis, I present two novel and highly complementary approaches to cover the gaps in sensitivity of current DM searches. The searches are enabled by a first-of-its-kind reconstruction technique to search for hidden-sector particles using the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) and by new advances in quantum sensing technology to search for axions and hidden-sector DM. In the first part of this thesis, I present a search for long-lived hidden sector particles, predicted by many extensions of the SM, using a novel technique to reconstruct decays of long-lived particles (LLPs) in the CMS muon detector. The innovative LLP reconstruction technique is sensitive to a broad range of LLP decays and to LLP masses below GeV. The search yields competitive sensitivity for proper lifetime 0.1--1000 m with the full Run 2 dataset recorded at the LHC between 2016--2018 at $\sqrt{s} = 13~$TeV. To extend the physics reach of this novel muon detector shower (MDS) signature, I present the model-independence of MDS and the reinterpretation of the search to a large number of LLP models, demonstrating its complementarity with proposed and existing dedicated LLP experiments. Finally, I present a new dedicated MDS trigger that improves the trigger efficiency by at least an order of magnitude and was deployed in 2022, at the start of Run 3 of the LHC operations. In the second part of the thesis, I present for the first time, the use of a novel quantum sensor, the low-noise and single-photon sensitive superconducting nanowire single photon detectors (SNSPDs), to directly detect dark matter. The low detection threshold and ultra-low dark count rate of SNSPDs can close the gap in DM discovery reach due to the current limitations in detector sensitivity. I will present my work on the development and characterization of SNSPDs for two entirely new experiments to directly detect axions via absorption and hidden-sector DM via electron scattering. The search for axions employs a novel broadband reflector technique with the Broadband Reflector Experiment for Axion Detection (BREAD). A unique parabolic mirror is then used to focus axion-converted photons to the SNSPDs, extending the reach to axion masses of 0.04--1 eV. On the other hand, by coupling the SNSPDs with gallium arsenide, a bright cryogenic scintillator well matched to SNSPD detection, a prototype sensing system can be built as a basis of new direct DM detection experiments capable of extending the discovery to DM masses as low as 1 MeV.
