ADAM: A web platform for graph-based modeling and optimization of supply chains

Modeling and optimization are essential tasks that arise in the analysis and design of supply chains (SCs). SC models are essential for understanding emergent behavior such as transactions between participants, inherent value of products exchanged, as well as impact of externalities (e.g., policy and climate) and of constraints. Unfortunately, most users of SC models have limited expertise in mathematical optimization, and this hinders the adoption of advanced decision-making tools. Here, in this work, we present ADAM, a web platform that enables the modeling and optimization of SCs. ADAM facilitates modeling by leveraging intuitive and compact graph-based abstractions that allow the user to express dependencies between locations, products, and participants. ADAM model objects serve as repositories of experimental, technology, and socio-economic data; moreover, the graph abstractions facilitate the organization and exchange of models and provides a natural framework for education and outreach. Here, we discuss the graph abstractions and software design principles behind ADAM, its key functional features and workflows, and application examples.

Accelerating Markov Chain Monte Carlo sampling with diffusion models

Global fits of physics models require efficient methods for exploring high-dimensional and/or multimodal posterior functions. We introduce a novel method for accelerating Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling by pairing a Metropolis-Hastings algorithm with a diffusion model that can draw global samples with the aim of approximating the posterior. We briefly review diffusion models in the context of image synthesis before providing a streamlined diffusion model tailored towards low-dimensional data arrays. We then present our adapted Metropolis-Hastings algorithm which combines local proposals with global proposals taken from a diffusion model that is regularly trained on the samples produced during the MCMC run. Our approach leads to a significant reduction in the number of likelihood evaluations required to obtain an accurate representation of the Bayesian posterior across several analytic functions, as well as for a physical example based on a global fit of parton distribution functions. Our method is extensible to other MCMC techniques, and we briefly compare our method to similar approaches based on normalising flows. A code implementation can be found at https://github.com/NickHunt-Smith/MCMC-diffusion.

Mitochondrial respiratory chain protein co-regulation in the human brain

Mitochondrial respiratory chain (RC) function requires the stoichiometric interaction among dozens of proteins but their co-regulation has not been defined in the human brain. Here, using quantitative proteomics across three independent cohorts we systematically characterized the co-regulation patterns of mitochondrial RC proteins in the human dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). Whereas the abundance of RC protein subunits that physically assemble into stable complexes were correlated, indicating their co-regulation, RC assembly factors exhibited modest co-regulation. Within complex I, nuclear DNA-encoded subunits exhibited >2.5-times higher co-regulation than mitochondrial (mt)DNA-encoded subunits. Moreover, mtDNA copy number was unrelated to mtDNA-encoded subunits abundance, suggesting that mtDNA content is not limiting. Alzheimer's disease (AD) brains exhibited reduced abundance of complex I RC subunits, an effect largely driven by a 2–4% overall lower mitochondrial protein content. These findings provide foundational knowledge to identify molecular mechanisms contributing to age- and disease-related erosion of mitochondrial function in the human brain.

Chain rigidity controlled aggregation ability and solid-state microstructures for efficient stretchable conjugated polymer films

Stretchable conjugated polymer films with good electrical performance under mechanical deformation are highly desirable for soft electronics. However, the mechanical and electrical properties of these films, particularly in conjugated polymer:elastomer blends, are not fully understood at molecular level. Here, this study explores the relationships among molecular structure, aggregation ability, film microstructure, and the electrical/mechanical properties of three diketopyrrolopyrrole-based conjugated polymers (P1, P2, P3) with decreasing backbone rigidity and their corresponding polymer:elastomer blends. The most flexible polymer P3 shows strong aggregation, which forms highly crystalline fibers to produce fragile neat film and produces large isolated crystallites restricting charge transport in blend film. As chain rigidity increases, the P1 and P2 polymers show weaker aggregation, and produce smaller crystallites in neat films with enhanced ductility. P1 and P2 based blend films display nanocrystallites polymer networks with dispersed elastomer domains. As a result, we achieved near-constant charge mobility before and after stretching under 50 % strain for P2-based blend films with well-controlled pathways for both charge transport and energy dissipation. This study demonstrates the critical role of backbone rigidity in regulating the properties of stretchable conjugated polymer films, paving the way for more reliable and deformable materials in soft electronics.

Biomass to bio-energy supply chain: Economic viability, case studies, challenges and policy implications in India

Biomass supply chain (BSC) management is an integral part of renewable energy projects, which include biomass-harvesting, collection, storage, processing and transportation to the bio-energy plants. The sustainability concept identifies economy, environment, and society as the three principal pillars of bioenergy. With an effective BSC implemented, all three dimensions of sustainability can be attained. Although, there’s been extensive research on the environmental sustainability of BSC, the economic aspects are under-represented in existing literature. So, an elaborate analysis on the economic viability of BSCs developed worldwide and those in India is critical, and needs to be studied. This review conducts a detailed accounting of the economic aspects of a BSC which includes the existing challenges in designing an environmental-cum-economically efficient BSC and strategies to address the issues. The Indian context has been studied on the BSC models, highlighting their shortcomings, while encapsulating the essential insights from global BSC models for a cost-effective BSC-to-bioenergy in India. Here, this review also emphasizes the policies supporting the BSC in India and forecasts the future biomass demand and supply. This review will provide stakeholders with critical insights on BSC and related challenges and assist them to investigate and devise strategies for successful implementation of BSCs in India.

Effect of Nanoconfinement on Polymer Chain Dynamics

Here, we report on a study of the effects of nanoconfinement on polymer chain dynamics within the framework developed by Muthukumar [Muthukumar, M. (1991). Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids, 131, 654-666.], who suggests that there is an entropically controlled dynamical regime between the Rouse and the reptation regimes that affects the power law dependence on molecular weight of the transport properties.

Game theoretic modeling and optimization of competition and collaboration in dual channel electronic waste supply chains

The rapid growth of electronic waste (e-waste) presents critical challenges for sustainable resource recovery and environmental protection. This study develops a dual-channel closed-loop supply chain (CLSC) model formulated as a hierarchical Stackelberg game, that integrates dynamic pricing and cost-sharing mechanisms to optimize both economic and environmental outcomes. The model explicitly captures strategic interactions between manufacturer-led and third-party recycling channels, accounting for consumer behavior, regulatory incentives, and market competition. Numerical simulations conducted (implemented over a four-iteration horizon using a commercial optimization solver) show that, relative to the baseline equilibrium, manufacturer profit increases from 11.6 thousand USD to 37.9 thousand USD (+226.8%), total recycled volume rises from 7,848 to 7,942 units (+1.2%), and collector profit nearly doubles under cost-sharing, enabling more equitable profit distribution. Furthermore, scenario-based simulations across Sub-Saharan Africa, high-income economies, and emerging Asian industrial countries reveal that infrastructure quality, policy intensity, and labor costs critically shape recycling efficiency and profit allocation. These findings demonstrate that subsidies alone are insufficient to ensure system efficiency. Instead, coordinated strategies that integrate internal incentive alignment with context-sensitive policy support are required. Overall, this study offers a robust framework for designing resilient, efficient, and regionally adaptable e-waste management systems.

Direct tests of cytochrome c and c 1 functions in the electron transport chain of malaria parasites

The mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC) of Plasmodium malaria parasites is a major antimalarial drug target, but critical cytochrome (cyt) functions remain unstudied and enigmatic. Parasites express two distinct cyt c homologs (c and c-2) with unusually sparse sequence identity and uncertain fitness contributions. P. falciparum cyt c-2 is the most divergent eukaryotic cyt c homolog currently known and has sequence features predicted to be incompatible with canonical ETC function. We tagged both cyt c homologs and the related cyt c1 for inducible knockdown. Translational repression of cyt c and cyt c1 was lethal to parasites, which died from ETC dysfunction and impaired ubiquinone recycling. In contrast, cyt c-2 knockdown or knockout had little impact on blood-stage growth, indicating that parasites rely fully on the more conserved cyt c for ETC function. Biochemical and structural studies revealed that both cyt c and c-2 are hemylated by holocytochrome c synthase, but UV-vis absorbance and EPR spectra strongly suggest that cyt c-2 has an unusually open active site in which heme is stably coordinated by only a single axial amino acid ligand and can bind exogenous small molecules. These studies provide a direct dissection of cytochrome functions in the ETC of malaria parasites and identify a highly divergent Plasmodium cytochrome c with molecular adaptations that defy a conserved role in eukaryotic evolution.

Accelerating multilevel Markov Chain Monte Carlo using machine learning models

Here, this work presents an efficient approach for accelerating multilevel Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling for large-scale problems using low-fidelity machine learning models. While conventional techniques for large-scale Bayesian inference often substitute computationally expensive high-fidelity models with machine learning models, thereby introducing approximation errors, our approach offers a computationally efficient alternative by augmenting high-fidelity models with low-fidelity ones within a hierarchical framework. The multilevel approach utilizes the low-fidelity machine learning model (MLM) for inexpensive evaluation of proposed samples thereby improving the acceptance of samples by the high-fidelity model. The hierarchy in our multilevel algorithm is derived from geometric multigrid hierarchy. We utilize an MLM to accelerate the coarse level sampling. Training machine learning model for the coarsest level significantly reduces the computational cost associated with generating training data and training the model. We present an MCMC algorithm to accelerate the coarsest level sampling using MLM and account for the approximation error introduced. We provide theoretical proofs of detailed balance and demonstrate that our multilevel approach constitutes a consistent MCMC algorithm. Additionally, we derive the expression for cost reduction due to machine learning model to facilitate cost analysis of the hierarchical sampling algorithm. Our technique is demonstrated on a standard benchmark inference problem in groundwater flow, where we estimate the probability density of a quantity of interest using a four-level MCMC algorithm. Our proposed algorithm accelerates multilevel sampling by a factor of two while achieving similar accuracy compared to sampling using the standard multilevel algorithm.

Quantum utility-scale error mitigation for quantum quench dynamics in Heisenberg spin chains

Here, we implement a quantum error mitigation method termed self-mitigation, which is comparable to zero-noise extrapolation, at large scales to achieve quantum utility on near-term, noisy quantum computers. We investigate the effectiveness of several quantum error mitigation strategies, including self-mitigation, by simulating quantum quench dynamics for Heisenberg spin chains with system sizes up to 104 qubits using IBM quantum processors. In particular, we discuss the limitations of zero-noise extrapolation and the advantages offered by self-mitigation at large scales. The self-mitigation method demonstrates stable accuracy with large systems of 104 qubits comprising more than 3,000 CNOT gates. Also, we combine the discussed quantum error mitigation methods with practical entanglement entropy measuring methods, and it shows a good agreement with the theoretical estimation. Our study illustrates the usefulness of near-term noisy quantum hardware in examining the quantum quench dynamics of many-body systems at large scales and lays the groundwork for surpassing classical simulations with quantum methods prior to the development of fault-tolerant quantum computers.

Preparing exact eigenstates of the open XXZ chain on a quantum computer

The open spin-1/2 XXZ spin chain with diagonal boundary magnetic fields is the paradigmatic example of a quantum integrable model with open boundary conditions. Here, we formulate a quantum algorithm for preparing Bethe states of this model, corresponding to real solutions of the Bethe equations. The algorithm is probabilistic, with a success probability that decreases with the number of down spins. For a Bethe state of L spins with M down spins, which contains a total of $(^{L}_{M})$ $2^{M} M!$ terms, the algorithm requires L+M 2 +2M qubits.

Floquet Engineering of Interactions and Entanglement in Periodically Driven Rydberg Chains

Neutral atom arrays driven into Rydberg states constitute a promising approach for realizing programmable quantum systems. Enabled by strong interactions associated with Rydberg blockade, they allow for simulation of complex spin models and quantum dynamics. We introduce a new Floquet engineering technique for systems in the blockade regime that provides control over novel forms of interactions and entanglement dynamics in such systems. Our approach is based on time-dependent control of Rydberg laser detuning and leverages perturbations around periodic many-body trajectories as resources for operator spreading. These time-evolved operators are utilized as a basis for engineering interactions in the effective Hamiltonian describing the stroboscopic evolution. As an example, we show how our method can be used to engineer strong spin exchange, consistent with the blockade, in a one-dimensional chain, enabling the exploration of gapless Luttinger liquid phases. In addition, we demonstrate that combining gapless excitations with Rydberg blockade can lead to dynamic generation of large-scale multipartite entanglement. Experimental feasibility and possible generalizations are discussed.

Cavity-assisted magnetization switching in a quantum spin-phonon chain

Néel order switching in antiferromagnets has typically required intense optical driving, leading to substantial heating and limited efficiency. By placing antiferromagnets inside a terahertz-driven optical cavity, we propose a multi-particle mechanism for Néel order switching that benefits from reduced heating. Our analysis reveals that phonons are indispensable to this mechanism. A driven cavity mode couples to a spin-phonon chain, with all excitations dissipating energy through external baths. Mean-field analysis shows that cavity photons induce sublattice spin-density imbalance—an intrinsic symmetry-breaking effect absent without the cavity. Contrary to known (1–10 V/nm) laser fields required to switch the Néel order, our mechanism enables switching at remarkably low laser fields (1–5 V/μm), selectively targeting low-energy and perpendicular magnon modes. By virtue of the suppressed heating, the switching remains highly tunable through laser fluence, damping, and photon loss, establishing a low-dissipation route toward cavity-assisted opto-spintronics.

Inelastic neutron scattering study of the anisotropic S = 1 spin chain [ Ni ( HF 2 ) ( 3 – Clpyridine ) 4 ] BF 4

[Ni(HF 2 )(3–Clpyridine) 4 ]BF 4 (NBCT) is a one-dimensional, S = 1 spin chain material that shows no magnetic neutron Bragg peaks down to temperatures of 0.1 K. Previous work identified NBCT as being in the Haldane phase and near a quantum phase transition as a function of D/J to the large-D quantum paramagnet phase (QPM), where D is the axial single-ion anisotropy and J is the intrachain superexchange. Herein, inelastic neutron scattering results are presented on partially deuterated, 11B-enriched NBCT polycrystalline samples in zero magnetic field and down to temperatures of 0.3 K. Comparison to density matrix renormalization group calculations yields D/J = 1.51 and a significant rhombic single-ion anisotropy E (E/D ≈ 0.03, E/J ≈ 0.05). Here, these D, J, and E values place NBCT in the large-D QPM phase but precipitously near a quantum phase transition to a long-range ordered phase.

Gapless to gapless phase transitions in quantum spin chains

We investigate spin chains with bilinear-biquadratic (BLBQ) spin interactions as a function of an applied magnetic field h. At the Uimin-Lai-Sutherland (ULS) critical point we find a gapless to gapless transition revealed by the dynamical structure factor S(q,ω) as a function of h. At h=0, the envelope of the lowest-energy excitations goes soft at two points, q 1 =2π/3 and q 2 =4π/3, dubbed the phase A. With increasing field, the spectral peaks at each of the gapless points bifurcate, making in total four soft modes, and combine to form a new set of excitations that soften at a single point q=π at h c1 ≈0.94. Beyond h c1 the system enters another gapless B phase until the transition at h c2 =4 to the fully polarized phase. We compare the ULS model results with those for the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki model as a representative of the gapped Haldane phase. We explain the mechanism of the gapless to gapless transition in the ULS model using its conserved charges and a spinon band picture. We also discuss the universality of central charges of the BLBQ family of models subjected to a magnetic field.

High-pressure inelastic neutron scattering study of the anisotropic S = 1 spin chain [ Ni ( HF 2 ) ( 3 - Clpyradine ) 4 ] B F 4

[Ni(HF 2 )(3-Clpyradine) 4 ]BF 4 (NBCT) is a one-dimensional, S=1 spin-chain material that shows no long-range magnetic order down to thermometer temperatures of 0.1 K. Previous ambient pressure inelastic neutron scattering experiments identified NBCT to be in the large-D quantum paramagnetic phase of the D/J phase diagram, where D is the axial single-ion anisotropy and J is the intrachain superexchange. In this work, we extend the previous experiments to a hydrostatic pressure of 0.9 GPa. By comparing to density matrix renormalization group calculations, we find D/J increases from 1.5 to 3.2 as pressure increases from 0 GPa to 0.9 GPa, which pushes the system further into the large-D phase.

One-dimensional Rashba states with unconventional spin texture in Bi chains

Spin-polarized electrons confined in low-dimensional structures are of high interest for spintronics applications. Here, in this study, we investigate the electronic structure of an ordered array of Bi monomer and dimer chains on the Ag(110) surface. By means of spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we find Rashba-Bychkov split bands crossing the Fermi level with one-dimensional constant energy contours. These bands are up-spin polarized for positive wave vectors and down-spin polarized for negative wave vectors, at variance with the Rashba-Bychkov model that predicts a pair of states with opposite spin in each half of the surface Brillouin zone. Density functional theory shows that spin-selective hybridization with the Ag bulk bands originates this unconventional spin texture.

Open-system spin transport and operator weight dissipation in spin chains

Here, we use nonequilibrium steady states to study the effect of dissipation-assisted operator evolution (DAOE) on the scaling behavior of transport in one-dimensional spin chains. We consider three models in the XXZ family: the XXZ model with staggered anisotropy, which is chaotic; XXZ model with no external field and tunable interaction, which is Bethe-ansatz integrable and (in the zero interaction limit) free-fermion integrable; and the disordered XY model, which is free-fermion integrable and Anderson localized. We find evidence that DAOE's effect on transport is controlled by its effect on the system's conserved quantities. To the extent that DAOE preserves those symmetries, it preserves the scaling of the system's transport properties; to the extent it breaks those conserved quantities, it pushes the system towards diffusive scaling of transport.
