Determination of the bending and buckling effect in the stress analysis of shell structures accessible from one side only

The present report describes a device for ascertaining the bending and buckling effect in stress measurements on shell structures accessible from one side only. Beginning with a discussion of the relationship between flexural strain and certain parameters, the respective errors of the test method for great or variable skin curvature within the test range are analyzed and illustrated by specimen example.

Buckling tests on eccentrically loaded beam columns

Formulas are obtained for computing the buckling load of rods eccentrically loaded at each end, the computation being extended in particular to the inelastic range. The test results are graphically presented on three sets of curves. Two of these, at least for the elastic range, are independent of the material tested. The third set, which is independent of the material, possesses greater clearness and is therefore used for comparing the test results with the theoretical.

Buckling Tests with a Spar-rib Grill

The present report deals with a comparison of mathematically and experimentally defined buckling loads of a spar-rib grill, on the assumption of constant spar section, and infinitely closely spaced ribs with rigidity symmetrical to the grill center. The loads are applied as equal bending moments at both spar ends, as compression in the line connecting the joints, and in the spar center line as the assumedly uniformly distributed spar weight.

Behavior of a plate strip under shear and compressive stresses beyond the buckling limit

The present report is an extension of previous theoretical investigations on the elastic behavior of a plate under compression and shear in the region above the critical. The main object is the clarification of the behavior immediately above the buckling limit since no theoretical expressions for this range have thus far been found and since experimentally, too, any degree of regularity in the behavior of the plate in the range between the critical load and about three to four times the critical, is discernible only with difficulty.

Experimental Studies of the Effective Width of Buckled Sheets

The object of the present experiments is a more exact determination of the effective width for the case of pure compression and of the sheet clamped at the angle section. From the experimental data of the effective width the calculation of the buckling load of an angle joined to a thin sheet is then deduced. The test material consisted of spring-hardened brass sheet.

Torsion and buckling of open sections

In this paper is a discussion of the general principles for open sections of any shape. In what follows the torsion will be computed and on the basis of the results it will be possible to obtain a proper design of section in each case. The torsion of buckling members for the case where they are centrally loaded, leads to a problem in pure stability and is similar to that of stressed beams.

Impact buckling of thin bars in the elastic range hinged at both ends

Following the development of the well-known differential equations of the problem and their resolution for failure in tension, the bending (transverse) oscillations of an originally not quite straight bar hinged at both ends and subjected to a constant longitudinal force (shock load) are analyzed. To this end the course of the bar form is expanded in a sinusoidal series, after which the investigation is carried through separately for the fundamental oscillation and the (n-1)the higher oscillations. The analysis of the fundamental oscillation distinguishes three cases: shock load lower, equal to, or higher than the Eulerian load. The investigation leads to functions which are proportional to the maximum stresses in time and space due to the shock stresses in buckling.

Comparison of level-1 and level-2 buckling and postbuckling solutions

The accuracy of the solutions obtained with the Level-1 computational modules of DISDECO (Delft Interactive Shell Design Code) are investigated by comparing them with solutions obtained with ANILISA, a Level-2 computational module. Whereas the Level-1 solutions are based on the use of trigonometric functions to represent the out-of-plane displacement W and involve Galerkin type approximations to reduce the governing partial differential equations to simple algebraic expressions, the Level-2 solutions employ a truncated Fourier expansion in the circumferential direction and solve the resulting ordinary differential equations forming a nonlinear eigenvalue problem by a Stodola like technique. This involves the numerical integration of the set of ordinary differential equations, which in turn makes it possible to satisfy the specified boundary conditions exactly. It is shown that in many applications the Level-1 predictions concerning the critical buckling load of the perfect structure and its imperfection sensitivity are quite accurate and reliable. For those cases where this is not true, it is shown how the pre and postprocessing facilities of DISDECO can be used efficiently to arrive at a reliable prediction. This involves always the use of the Level-2 computational module ANILISA with its rigorous prebuckling solution and its feature which makes it possible to satisfy the specified boundary conditions exactly.

Free vibration of thermally loaded panels including initial imperfections and post-buckling effects

A combined theoretical and experimental approach is developed to consider the small amplitude free vibration characteristics of fully clamped panels under the influence of uniform heating. Included in this study are the effects of higher modes, in-plane boundary elasticity, initial imperfections, and post-buckling. Comparisons between theory and experiment reveal excellent agreement.

Formulation of an improved smeared stiffener theory for buckling analysis of grid-stiffened composite panels

A smeared stiffener theory for stiffened panels is presented that includes skin-stiffener interaction effects. The neutral surface profile of the skin-stiffener combination is developed analytically using the minimum potential energy principle and statics conditions. The skin-stiffener interaction is accounted for by computing the stiffness due to the stiffener and the skin in the skin-stiffener region about the neutral axis at the stiffener. Buckling load results for axially stiffened, orthogrid, and general grid-stiffened panels are obtained using the smeared stiffness combined with a Rayleigh-Ritz method and are compared with results from detailed finite element analyses.

Buckling and vibration analysis of laminated panels using VICONOPT

The analysis aspects of the 23,000-line FORTRAN program VIPASA with constraints and optimization (VICONOPT) are described. Overall stiffness matrices assembled from the earlier exact vibration and instability of plate assemblies including shear and anisotropy (VIPASA) flat plate stiffnesses are optionally coupled by Langrangian multipliers to find critical buckling loads, or natural frequencies of undamped vibration, of prismatic assemblies of anisotropic flat plates with arbitrarily located point supports or simple transverse supporting frames. The longitudunal continuity of typical wing and fuselage panels is closely approximated because the solutions are for the infinitely long structure obtained by repeating a bay and its supports longitudinally. Any longitudinally invariant in-plane plate stresses are permitted, and very rapid solutions are guaranteed by numerous refinements, including multilevel substructuring and a method for repetitive cross sections that is exact for regular polygons used to represent cylinders. Modal displacements and stresses in or between plies of laminated plates are calculated and plotted, with values being recovered at all nodes of substructures. Comparison with usual approximate finite-element methods confirms that, for comparably converged solutions, VICONOPT is typically between 100 and 10(exp 4) times faster.

Thermal and Mechanical Buckling and Postbuckling Responses of Selected Curved Composite Panels

The results of an experimental and numerical study of the buckling and postbuckling responses of selected unstiffened curved composite panels subjected to mechanical end shortening and a uniform temperature increase are presented. The uniform temperature increase induces thermal stresses in the panel when the axial displacement is constrained. An apparatus for testing curved panels at elevated temperature is described, numerical results generated by using a geometrically nonlinear finite element analysis code are presented. Several analytical modeling refinements that provide more accurate representation of the actual experimental conditions, and the relative contribution of each refinement, are discussed. Experimental results and numerical predictions are presented and compared for three loading conditions including mechanical end shortening alone, heating the panels to 250 F followed by mechanical end shortening, and heating the panels to 400 F. Changes in the coefficients of thermal expansion were observed as temperature was increased above 330 F. The effects of these changes on the experimental results are discussed for temperatures up to 400 F.

Buckling of structures with uncertain imperfections - Personal perspective

The previous review on stochastic buckling of structures was written by Amazigo in 1976. This review summarizes some of the developments which took place in recent two decades. A brief overview is given of the effect on uncertainty in the initial geometric imperfections, elastic moduli, applied forces, and thickness variation. For the benefit of the thinking reader, the review has a critical nature. It should be noted that this manuscript has yet to be completed.

Residual Strength Predictions with Crack Buckling

Fracture tests were conducted on middle crack tension, M(T), and compact tension, C(T), specimens of varying widths, constructed from 0.063 inch thick sheets of 2024-T3 aluminum alloy. Guide plates were used to restrict out-of-plane displacements in about half of the tests. Analyses using the three-dimensional, elastic-plastic finite element code WARP3D simulated the tests with and without guide plates using a critical CTOA fracture criterion. The experimental results indicate that crack buckling reduced the failure loads by up to 40%. Using a critical CTOA value of 5.5 deg., the WARP3D analyses predicted the failure loads for the tests with guide plates within +/- 10% of the experimentally measured values. For the M(T) tests without guide plates, the WARP3D analyses predicted the failure loads for the 12 and 24 inch tests within 10%, while over predicting the failure loads for the 40 inch wide tests by about 20%.

Elastic Buckling of Orthotropic Plates Under Varying Axial Stresses

The elastic buckling load of simply supported rectangular orthotropic plates subjected to a second degree parabolic variation of axial stresses in the longitudinal direction is calculated using analytical methods. The variation of axial stresses is equilibrated by nonuniform shear stresses along the plate edges and transverse normal stresses. The influence of the aspect ratio is examined, and the results are compared with plates subjected to uniform axial stresses.

Damage Progression in Buckle-Resistant Notched Composite Plates Loaded in Uniaxial Compression

Results of an experimental and analytical evaluation of damage progression in three stitched composite plates containing an angled central notch and subjected to compression loading are presented. Parametric studies were conducted systematically to identify the relative effects of the material strength parameters on damage initiation and growth. Comparisons with experiments were conducted to determine the appropriate in situ values of strengths for progressive failure analysis. These parametric studies indicated that the in situ value of the fiber buckling strength is the most important parameter in the prediction of damage initiation and growth in these notched composite plates. Analyses of the damage progression in the notched, compression-loaded plates were conducted using in situ material strengths. Comparisons of results obtained from these analyses with experimental results for displacements and axial strains show good agreement.

Elastic Buckling under Combined Stresses of Flat Plates with Integral Waffle-Like Stiffening

Theory and experiment were compared and found in good agreement for the elastic Buckling under combined stresses of long flat plates with integral waffle-like stiffening in a variety of configurations. For such flat plates, 45deg waffle stiffening was found to be the most effective of the configurations for the proportions considered over the widest range of combinations of compression and shear.

Simple Formulas and Results for Buckling-Resistance and Stiffness Design of Compression-Loaded Laminated-Composite Cylinders

Simple formulas for the buckling stress of homogeneous, specially orthotropic, laminated-composite cylinders are presented. The formulas are obtained by using nondimensional parameters and equations that facilitate general validation, and are validated against the exact solution for a wide range of cylinder geometries and laminate constructions. Results are presented that establish the ranges of the nondimensional parameters and coefficients used. General results, given in terms of the nondimensional parameters, are presented that encompass a wide range of geometries and laminate constructions. These general results also illustrate a wide spectrum of behavioral trends. Design-oriented results are also presented that provide a simple, clear indication of laminate composition on critical stress, critical strain, and axial stiffness. An example is provided to demonstrate the application of these results to thin-walled column designs.
