Variations in the ultraviolet Mg II lines of beta Persei

Copernicus satellite observations have been used to study changes in the Mg II lines in the neighborhood of 2800 A in Algol during eclipse. The resonance lines near 2800 A show doubling near the bottom of primary eclipse. A possible explanation is that emission from component B fills the line centers; the absolute magnitude thus derived for component B agrees with other values in the literature.

High-beta turbulence in two-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics

Equations of ideal magnetohydrodynamics are used to study incompressible turbulent flows in a specified geometry where all the field quantities vary with only two spatial dimensions. The procedures adopted are basically those of Kraichnan (1967), in which classical equilibrium ensembles are built around constants of the motion identified from the Fourier-transformed equations of motion. Once the constants of the motion are identified, the statistical formulation of the problem is presented in a phase space whose coordinates are the real and imaginary parts of the Fourier coefficients. Canonical ensembles are constructed in this phase space by classical arguments. The theory developed permits isolation of some qualitatively new gross physical effects which have so far not been calculated. One of the more novel physical effects is the appearance of macroscopic structures involving long-wavelength, self-generated, magnetic fields for a wide range of initial parameters.

Evidence for two-dimensional inertial turbulence in a cosmic-scale low-beta plasma

Magnetospheric electric-field power spectral densities measured from high-altitude balloons and the Hawkeye 1 satellite are combined in wavenumber space and exhibit a power-law spectrum with index -1.6 + or -0.3 below a wavenumber of 0.05 reciprocal km and index -2.8 + or -0.3 above 2 reciprocal km. This spectrum agrees with that predicted for the inertial subrange of an isotropic homogeneous two-dimensional fluid and for a two-dimensional plasma when energy enters the system at the spectral knee and there exists a viscous dissipation mechanism at large wavenumbers. The wavelength of the spectral knee corresponds to that of folds and curls in the aurora and may be due to an instability of the auroral particle beams.

Some evolutionary considerations of Beta Cephei stars

The evolutionary aspects of massive population 1 stars were investigated. Semiconvection was treated in two different ways, and included mass loss both in the early as well as later spectra stages. The effect of rotation was taken into account and the time evolution of angular momentum of these models was studied. The effect of differential rotation due to the faster rotating interiors and slowed down surface layers are briefly described.

Theoretical regime diagrams for thermally driven flows in a beta-plane channel in the presence of variable gravity

The effect of a power law gravity field on baroclinic instability is examined, with a focus on the case of inverse fifth power gravity, since this is the power law produced when terrestrial gravity is simulated in spherical geometry by a dielectric force. Growth rates are obtained of unstable normal modes as a function of parameters of the problem by solving a second order differential equation numerically. It is concluded that over the range of parameter space explored, there is no significant change in the character of theoretical regime diagrams if the vertically averaged gravity is used as parameter.

The effect of immobilization and 3 (beta-aminoethyl)-1, 2, 4 triazol on the calcium content in gastric tissues of guinea pigs during the formation of experimental ulcers

A sharp fall in the concentration of calcium in gastric tissues upon immobilization and after administration of the histamine analog was recorded. Similar shifts were seen to occur in the blood plasma as well. This implies that under the effect of different action, tissue dystrophy develops by following a common mechanism involving not only the adenyl cyclase system, but that of calcium ion metabolism as well. The calcium ion content in the blood plasma and gastric tissues were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry.

Line strength variations in beta Cephei

The line strength variations of the resonance line of C IV (1550A, 2s 2S - 2P) observed by OAO-2 were confirmed by IUE observations. In addition, the NV resonance line (1204A, 2s 2S - 2P), the Si III line (1206A, 3p 1P-1D, multiplet 11) and the Si IV resonance line (1395A, 3s 2S - 2P) all vary in line strength essentially in phase with the C IV variation. The (preliminary) period of the variation is 6.02/12.04 days.

ARTS BETA testing report

The advanced real time system (ARTS) was tested utilizing existing commercial system hardware and software which has been operating under advanced operating system (AOS) for several years in a multitasking, multiprocessing, and multiple computer environment. Experiences with ARTS in terms of compatibility with AOS, ease of transmission between AOS and ARTS, and functional areas of ARTS which were tested are discussed. Relative and absolute performance of ARTS versus AOS as measured in the system environment are also presented.

Optical conductivity of amorphous Ta and beta-Ta films

Tantalum films evaporated in high vacuum onto liquid-nitrogen-cooled substrates had an amorphous structure that persisted even after warming to room temperature. The optical conductivity (as well as the dc conductivity) of the amorphous films differed significantly from that of the bcc films.

Intensity changes in the UV spectrum of Beta Cephei

Fifty eight short wavelength International Ultraviolet Explorer spectra were taken over a 152 day period. Variations in the absorption lines of C IV (1550 A), Si IV (1393 and 1404 A) and N V (1239 and 1243 A) and a Cr III feature (1208 to 1211 A) were observed. A data reduction technique was developed in order to compare the changes in the equivalent widths of these absorption lines. Periods were determined by least squares fit to a sinusoid using several combinations of the data. In one case eighteen spectra for each ion taken at approximately one day intervals were used; in another, all 58 measurements of each were used; and in a third all measurements from all the ions wee combined. Using both variable metric and interactive algorithms it was determined that for all combinations mentioned a period of 6.10 + or - .06 days is the best fit to the vector of equivalent widths versus time. No other period, with or without the 6.10 day period removed from the data, was found. Analysis of the Cr III feature near 1210 A gives the same period as the others, but in antiphase.
