6⁢𝐻-perovskite dimer lattice with antiferromagnetic interactions: Ba 3⁢ Zn 1−𝑥⁢ Ca 𝑥 ⁢Ru 2 ⁢O 9

Here, we investigate the magnetic behavior of the 6⁢𝐻-perovskite dimer lattice Ba 3 ⁢Zn 1−𝑥 ⁢Ca 𝑥 ⁢Ru 2 ⁢O 9 using analytical theory, density functional theory, inelastic neutron scattering, and modeling of historical magnetization and neutron-scattering data. A dimer mean-field theory built upon classical Luttinger–Tisza analysis generates a phase diagram revealing a transition from a nonmagnetic singlet to a finite-moment ground state as interdimer couplings increase. A (generalized) linear spin-wave theory captures multiplet mixing, excitation gap closing, and fluctuation-induced moment suppression. Density-functional-theory calculations on selected compounds, together with neutron spectroscopy of dilute Ba 3 ⁢Zn⁢(Ru 1−𝑥 ⁢Sb 𝑥 ) 2 ⁢O 9 , confirm the exchange hierarchy, enabling quantification of previously published experiments within this framework. Our results identify three mechanisms for magnetic moment suppression—quantum fluctuations, ligand hybridization, and nonmagnetic-singlet/magnetic-multiplet mixing.

Emergent quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnetism in the distorted kagome magnet CePtPb

CePtPb hosts a distorted kagome lattice of Ce 3+ ions, providing a clean platform to investigate how reduced local symmetry and strong spin-orbit coupling reshape frustrated magnetism. Magnetization, specific heat, and magnetocaloric effect measurements, combined with a symmetry analysis of the single-ion anisotropy, demonstrate that the local 𝑚⁢2⁢𝑚 site symmetry selects a nearly Ising-like Kramers doublet with easy axes lying within the 𝑎⁢𝑏 plane. This results in three distinct in-plane Ising directions and an overall easy-plane anisotropy. The low-energy magnetic response is well captured by a three-sublattice Ising model, which quantitatively reproduces the saturation magnetization for arbitrary in-plane field orientations, including $[110]$ and $[1\bar{⁢1}⁢0]$, as well as the ratio of the field-induced critical fields. For 𝐵∥$[110]$, the phase diagram exhibits two quantum critical points at 𝐵 c⁢1 = 0.25T and 𝐵 c⁢2 = 0.55T, arising from the sequential polarization of the three Ising sublattices. In conclusion, these results reveal that the system develops quasi-one-dimensional spin chains along the 𝑐 axis, emerging from the nominally three-dimensional crystal structure composed of stacked kagome layers, and illustrate how reduced local symmetry can drive effective dimensional reduction in rare-earth Ising magnets.

Nanoscale degeneracy lifting in a geometrically frustrated antiferromagnet

The local atomic and magnetic structures of the compounds A MnO 2 (A = Na, Cu), which realize a geometrically frustrated, spatially anisotropic triangular lattice of Mn spins, have been investigated by atomic and magnetic pair distribution function analysis of neutron total scattering data. Relief of frustration in CuMnO 2 is accompanied by a conventional cooperative symmetry-lowering lattice distortion driven by Néel order. In NaMnO 2 , however, the distortion has a short-range nature. A cooperative interaction between the locally broken symmetry and short-range magnetic correlations lifts the magnetic degeneracy on a nanometer length scale, enabling long-range magnetic order in the Na derivative. The degree of frustration, mediated by residual disorder, contributes to the rather differing pathways to a single, stable magnetic ground state in these two related compounds. This study demonstrates how nanoscale structural distortions that cause local-scale perturbations can lift the ground-state degeneracy and trigger macroscopic magnetic order.

Coulomb correlation in noncollinear antiferromagnetic 𝛼-Mn

Here, we discuss the interplay between magnetic and structural degrees of freedom in elemental Mn. The equilibrium volume is shown to be sensitive to magnetic interactions between the Mn atoms. While the standard generalized gradient approximation underestimates the equilibrium volume, a more accurate treatment of the effects of electronic localization and magnetism is found to solve this longstanding problem. Our calculations also reveal the presence of a magnetic phase in strained $\alpha$-Mn that has been reported previously in experiments. This new phase of strained $\alpha$-Mn exhibits a noncollinear spin structure with large magnetic moments.

Spin excitations in the frustrated triangular lattice antiferromagnet NaYbO 2

In this work, we present a neutron scattering-based study of magnetic excitations and magnetic order in NaYbO 2 under the application of an external magnetic field. The crystal electric field-split J = 7=2 multiplet structure is determined, revealing a mixed |m z $\rangle$ ground state doublet and is consistent with a recent report Ding et al. Our measurements further suggest signatures of exchange effects in the crystal field spectrum, manifested by a small splitting in energy of the transition into the first excited doublet. The field-dependence of the low-energy magnetic excitations across the transition from the quantum disordered ground state into the fluctuation driven ordered regime is analyzed. Signs of a first-order phase transition into a noncollinear ordered state are revealed at the upper-field phase boundary of the ordered regime, and higher order magnon scattering, suggestive of strong magnon-magnon interactions, is resolved within the previously reported up-up-down phase. Our results reveal a complex phase diagram of field-induced order and spin excitations within NaYbO 2 and demonstrate the dominant role of quantum fluctuations cross a broad range of fields within its interlayer frustrated triangular lattice.

Entanglement properties of disordered quantum spin chains with long-range antiferromagnetic interactions

Entanglement measures are useful tools in characterizing otherwise unknown quantum phases and indicating transitions between them. Here we examine the concurrence and entanglement entropy in quantum spin chains with random long-range couplings, spatially decaying with a power-law exponent $\textit{α}$. Using the strong disorder renormalization group (SDRG) technique, we find by analytical solution of the master equation a strong disorder fixed point, characterized by a fixed point distribution of the couplings with a finite dynamical exponent, which describes the system consistently in the regime $α > \frac{1}{2}$ . A numerical implementation of the SDRG method yields a power-law spatial decay of the average concurrence, which is also confirmed by exact numerical diagonalization. However, we find that the lowest-order SDRG approach is not sufficient to obtain the typical value of the concurrence. We therefore implement a correction scheme which allows us to obtain the leading-order corrections to the random singlet state. This approach yields a power-law spatial decay of the typical value of the concurrence, which we derive both by a numerical implementation of the corrections and by analytics. Next, using numerical SDRG, the entanglement entropy (EE) is found to be logarithmically enhanced for all $\textit{α}$, corresponding to a critical behavior with an effective central charge $\textit{c}$ = ln(2), independent of $\textit{α}$. This is confirmed by an analytical derivation. Using numerical exact diagonalization (ED), we confirm the logarithmic enhancement of the EE and a weak dependence on $\textit{α}$. For a wide range of partition size $\textit{l}$, the EE fits a critical behavior with a central charge close to $\textit{c}$ = 1, which is the same as for the clean Haldane-Shastry model with a power-law-decaying interaction with $\textit{α}$ = 2. Only for small $l \ll L$, in a range which increases with the number of spins N, we find deviations which are rather consistent with the strong disorder fixed point central charge $\textit{c}$ = ln(2). Furthermore, we find using ED that the concurrence shows power-law decay, albeit with smaller power exponents than obtained by SDRG. Finally, we also present results obtained with DMRG and find agreement with ED for sufficiently small $\textit{α}$ < 2, whereas for larger $\textit{α}$ DMRG tends to underestimate the entanglement entropy and finds a faster decaying concurrence.

Field-induced topological Hall effect and double-fan spin structure with a $c$-axis component in the metallic kagome antiferromagnetic compound YMn 6 Sn 6

Geometric frustration in the kagome lattice makes it a great host for the flat electronic band, nontrivial topological properties, and novel magnetism. In this work, we use magnetotransport measurements to map out the field-temperature phase diagram of the centrosymmetric YMn 6 Sn 6 with a Mn kagome lattice and show that the system exhibits the topological Hall effect (THE) with an in-plane applied magnetic field around 240 K. In addition, our neutron diffraction results demonstrate that the observed THE cannot arise from a magnetic skyrmion lattice, but instead from an in-plane field-induced double-fan spin structure with c-axis components. This paper provides a platform to understand the influence of a field-induced novel magnetic structure on magnetoelectric response in topological kagome metals.

Neutron scattering investigation of proposed Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions in the triangular-lattice Ising antiferromagnet TmMgGaO 4

In this study, we use a variety of neutron scattering techniques to investigate the nature of the unusual magnetism in the compound TmMgGaO 4 . The crystal structure of this material hosts a triangular lattice of Tm spins exhibiting strong geometrical frustration. Theoretical predictions have suggested an unusual topological magnetic phase transition known as a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition at low temperature. By combining and comparing the various neutron scattering results, we have compelling evidence that such a transition indeed occurs at temperatures around 4 K in TmMgGaO 4 . This establishes TmMgGaO 4 as a valuable system to study Kosterlitz-Thouless physics in a dense spin system.

Beyond magnons in Nd 2 ScNbO 7 : An Ising pyrochlore antiferromagnet with all-in–all-out order and random fields

We report the low-temperature magnetic properties of Nd 3+ pyrochlore Nd 2 ScNbO 7 . Susceptibility and magnetization show an easy-axis moment, and heat capacity reveals a phase transition to long-range order at T N =371(2) mK with a fully recovered ΔS=Rln(2), 53% of it recovered for T>T N . Elastic neutron scattering shows a long-range all-in all-out magnetic order with low-Q diffuse elastic scattering. Inelastic neutron scattering shows a low-energy flat band, indicating a magnetic Hamiltonian similar to Nd 2 Zr 2 O 7 . Nuclear hyperfine excitations measured by ultra-high-resolution neutron backscattering indicate a distribution of static electronic moments below T N , which may be due to B-site disorder influencing Nd crystal electric fields. Analysis of heat-capacity data shows an unexpected T-linear or T 3/2 term which is inconsistent with conventional magnon quasiparticles, but is consistent with fractionalized spinons or gapless local spin excitations. We use legacy data to show similar behavior in Nd 2 Zr 2 O 7 . Comparing local static moments also reveals a suppression of the nuclear Schottky anomaly in temperature, evidencing a fraction of Nd sites with nearly zero static moment, consistent with exchange-disorder-induced random singlet formation. Finally, taken together, these measurements suggest an unusual fluctuating magnetic ground state which mimics a spin liquid, but may not actually be one.

Magnetic terahertz resonances above the Néel temperature in the frustrated kagome antiferromagnet averievite

Time-domain magneto-THz spectroscopy is utilized to study the frustrated magnet averievite Cu 5–x Zn x V 2 O 10 (CsCl). Pronounced THz resonances are observed in unsubstituted samples (x = 0) when cooling below the onset of short-range magnetic correlations. The influence of external magnetic effects confirms the magnetic origin of these resonances. Increasing Zn substitution suppresses the resonances, as frustration effects dominate, reflecting the nonmagnetic phases for x > 0.25 compounds. The temperature evolution of the THz spectra is complemented with electron spin resonance spectroscopy. This comparison allows a direct probe of the different contributions from magnetic order, frustration, and structural properties in the phase diagram of averievite. Furthermore, our results illustrate the effect of magnetic interactions in THz spectra of frustrated magnets.

Damped Dirac magnon in the metallic kagome antiferromagnet FeSn

The kagome lattice is a fertile platform to explore topological excitations with both Fermi-Dirac and Bose-Einstein statistics. While relativistic Dirac fermions and flat bands have been discovered in the electronic structure of kagome metals, the spin excitations have received less attention. Here, we report inelastic neutron scattering studies of the prototypical kagome magnetic metal FeSn. The spectra display well-defined spin waves extending to 120 meV. Above this energy, the spin waves become progressively broadened, reflecting interactions with the Stoner continuum. Using linear spin-wave theory, we determine an effective spin Hamiltonian that reproduces the measured dispersion. This analysis indicates that the Dirac magnon at the K point remarkably occurs on the brink of a region where well-defined spin waves become unobservable. Furthermore, our results emphasize the influential role of itinerant carriers on the topological spin excitations of metallic kagome magnets.

Field-Induced Magnetic States in the Metallic Rare-Earth Layered Triangular Antiferromagnet TbAuAl 4 Ge 2

Magnetic frustration in metallic rare- earth lanthanides (Ln) with 4f electrons is crucial for producing interesting magnetic phases with high magnetic anisotropy where intertwined charge and spin degrees of freedom lead to novel phenomena. Here we report on the magnetic, thermodynamic, and electrical transport properties of TbAuAl 4 Ge 2 . Tb ions form two-dimensional triangular lattice layers which stack along the crystalline c axis. The magnetic phase diagram reveals multiple nearly degenerate ordered states upon applying field along the magnetically easy ab-plane before saturation. The magnetoresistance in this configuration exhibits intricate field dependence that closely follows that of the magnetization while the specific heat reveals a region of highly enhanced entropy, suggesting the possibility of a nontrivial spin textured phase. For fields applied along the c axis (hard axis), we find linear magnetoresistance over a wide range of fields. Further, we compare the magnetic properties and magnetoresistance with an isostructural GdAuAl 4 Ge 2 single crystal. These results identify TbAuAl 4 Ge 2 as an environment for complex quantum spin states and pave the way for further investigations of the broader LnAuAl 4 Ge 2 family of materials.

Machine learning the spectral function of a hole in a quantum antiferromagnet

Understanding charge motion in a background of interacting quantum spins is a fundamental problem in quantum many-body physics. The most extensively studied model for this problem is the so-called t-t'-t''-J model, where the determination of the parameter t' in the context of cuprate superconductors is challenging. Here we present a theoretical study of the spectral functions of a mobile hole in the t-t'-t''-J model using two machine-learning techniques: K-nearest neighbor regression (KNN) and a feed-forward neural network (FFNN). We employ the self-consistent Born approximation to generate a dataset of about 1.3 x 10 5 spectral functions. Here we show that, for the forward problem, both methods allow for the accurate and efficient prediction of spectral functions, allowing, e.g., rapid searches through parameter space. Furthermore, we find that for the inverse problem (inferring Hamiltonian parameters from spectra), the FFNN can, but the KNN cannot, accurately predict the model parameters using merely the density of states. Our results suggest that it may be possible to use deep-learning methods to predict materials parameters from experimentally measured spectral functions.
