MCNP ® Code V.6.3.0 Release Notes

The Monte Carlo N-Particle ® (MCNP ® ) code is a general-purpose, continuous-energy, generalized geometry, time-dependent, radiation transport code developed by the MCNP development team. The MCNP calculations provide predictive capabilities that can replace expensive or impossible-to perform experiments. Specific application problems include simulations of experimental diagnostics, intrinsic radiation, radiation detection and measurement, criticality safety, nuclear threat reduction and response, radiation health protection, nuclear weapons effects, and nuclear forensics. This MCNP code, version 6.3.0, follows the MCNP6.2.0 version. Since the release of MCNP6.2.0, many changes have been made to the MCNP code. These changes include new or improved features, a new build system, code enhancement and modernization, and bug fixes. The MCNP code, version 6.3.0, theory and user input information is documented in MCNP ® Code Version 6.3.0 Theory & User Manual, the build guidance for various platforms is documented in MCNP ® Code Version 6.3.0 Build Guide, and the verification and validation testing for various application benchmark test suites is documented in MCNP ® Code Version 6.3.0 Verification & Validation Testing.

TNSL support in GNDS 2.0 and beyond [Slides]

This presentation begins by discussing the TNSL format options that went through a major overhaul in GNDS-2.0 and it examines the changes in 2.0. Additionally, it discusses three issues with further changes that should be considered. The first issue is that the project needs some guidance on what to expect when evaluations are performed with coherent inelastic. The second issue is that GNDS-2.0 does not provide a way to clearly specify in the evaluation how to switch to ‘standard’ incident neutron evaluations for energies or temperatures outside the TNSL domain. The third issue is that when GNDS-2.0 was designed, it was assumed that S(α,β) would always be given on a uniform interpolation grid. The presentation concludes by discussing how New JENDL-5 TNSL evaluations have some complications.

GNDS v2.0 release and future developments [Slides]

This presentation begins by discussing the major changes in v2.0 of GNDS and that the GNDS-2.0 formatted libraries are now available. It also examines how code support for GNDS is growing with processing codes, APIs and transport codes, and evaluation/testing codes. The presentation states that while migrating to GNDS can be a major effort it worthwhile, especially for anyone who is just getting started as nuclear data creator or user. Additionally, this presentation outlines the established milestones that the EG-GNDS (the group in charge of GNDS specs) has for the next GNDS release and elaborates on the first goal, which is to migrate GNDS specifications to the new JSON schema language.

Updated Gadolinium Validation in SCALE 6.3.0 using ENDF/B-VIII.0 Data [Slides]

This presentation provides a brief recap of the ANS Summer meeting in 2018 with a discussion of the results. The presentation also provides an overview of new models and states that all new models have been checked but have not yet been added to the VALID library. It also states that the models were originally created as part of a master's thesis or summer internships. Additionally, all models have been rerun in SCALE 6.3.0 using CE ENDF/B-VIII.0 library. In conclusion, this project has facilitated a significant expansion of validation set containing gadolinium, including 13 cases previously in VALID plus 99 new cases. The completion of IPPE HST experiments confirm no clear trend as a function of concentration or spectrum. Solid absorber cases also show no clear trends and LANL HMT experiments have significant discrepancies in Gd alloy cases. While almost half of the total gadolinium-bearing cases from the ICSBEP Handbook are considered here, the presentation recognizes that there is more work to be done.

Verification and validation testing and tools: comparison between MCNP code versions and nuclear data libraries [Slides]

This presentation discusses the primary goal of software testing which is to test the code for correctness. It also discusses the results for individual suites and the role of validation and verification also referred to in the presentation as V&V. In summation, the V&V framework enables easy comparison between calculations performed with different code versions and/or nuclear data libraries. This entire framework will be distributed with the upcoming MCNP6.3 release. V&V test suites shown and several that were not (Criticality, LAQGSM, Lockwood) will be distributed in the new framework.

MCNP6.3: A Year in Review [Slides]

This presentation discusses the past year and the many accomplishments of the MCNP6.3 team. It states that the MCNP6.3 release is imminent and that the approved, final documents have been making their way to the website. The code executables and source are already packaged up for distribution and the new installer is being finalized and tested now, for all platforms. The package will be sent to RSICC before the end of October 2022. Additionally, the presentation discusses some things to think about as MCNP6.3 is requested and/or used. For example, many of the recent efforts have been focused on making development, updates, and distribution of the code and documents more robust and streamlined. They will be revising/updating documents more frequently than ever before and they will be exploring avenues to distribute official patches to MCNP6.3. As they explain, this allows them to be more responsive to bugs and issues that are identified. In conclusion, the application of a patch to MCNP6.3 will require having the source code.

Multigroup Cross-section Generation in MCNP6.3 [Slides]

This presentation states that in comparison to the NJOY-produced multigroup cross sections, the MCNP-produced multigroup cross sections are generally consistent. Statistical uncertainties, however, are challenging and the unresolved resonance region may be looked at in the future. It also discusses how the SPM and LCS options were compared to each other for internal consistency. Additionally, some reactor pin-cell-like problems were used to compare to multigroup capabilities in other Monte Carlo codes (e.g., Serpent, OpenMC).

MCNP6.3 Code and Nuclear Data Installation Guide [Slides]

This presentation discusses the MCNP6.3 release package and examines how it offers more MCNP6-specific executables and options available than ever before. It also discusses the installer and that it streamlines the MCNP6.3 installation and automatically downloads all production nuclear data and generates xsdir files for the user. Additionally, the nd_manager is also discussed regarding how it allows the LANL Nuclear Data and Monte Carlo teams to work and distribute their products independently. It also allows updates, fixes (errata), and newly released data to be made available in a much faster timescale than ever before.

Comparative Analysis of Confidence Metrics for Nuclear Criticality Safety

Nuclear criticality safety standards provide guidance on the requirements and recommendations to establish confidence in computerized model results used to support operation with fissionable materials. By design, the guidance is not prescriptive, leaving the analysts free to determine how various sources of uncertainties are to be statistically aggregated. This report compares the analyses and key assumptions behind four notable methodologies documented in the nuclear criticality safety literature: the parametric, nonparametric, Whisper, and TSURFER methodologies. Because of the involved use of statistics entangled with heuristic recipes, the results of these methodologies are often difficult to interpret. Also, they are augmented by additional large administrative margins, eliminating the incentive to understand their differences. With the new resurgent wave of advanced nuclear systems focused on economizing operation—including advanced reactors, fuel cycles, and fuel concepts—there is a strong need to develop a clear understanding of uncertainties and their fusion methodologies to reduce uncertainties in a scientifically defensible manner. This report offers a deep dive into the various assumptions of the four noted methodologies, their adequacy, and their limitations, to provide guidance on developing confidence for the emergent nuclear systems. These systems are expected to be challenged by the scarcity of experimental data.
