Lactone Backbone Density in Rigid Electron-Deficient Semiconducting Polymers Enabling High n-type Organic Thermoelectric Performance

We report three lactone-based rigid semiconducting polymers were designed to overcome major limitations in the development of n-type organic thermoelectrics, namely electrical conductivity and air stability. Experimental and theoretical investigations demonstrated that increasing the lactone group density by increasing the benzene content from 0% benzene (P-0), to 50% (P-50), and 75% (P-75) resulted in progressively larger electron affinities (up to 4.37 eV), suggesting a more favorable doping process, when employing (N-DMBI) as the dopant. Larger polaron delocalization was also evident, due to the more planarized conformation, which is proposed to lead to a lower hopping energy barrier. As a consequence, the electrical conductivity increased by three orders of magnitude, to achieve values of up to 12 S/cm and Power factors of 13.2 μWm -1 K -2 were thereby enabled. These findings present new insights into material design guidelines for the future development of air stable n-type organic thermoelectrics.

Computational Identification and Experimental Demonstration of High‐Performance Methane Sorbents

Abstract Remarkable methane uptake is demonstrated experimentally in three metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) identified by computational screening: UTSA‐76, UMCM‐152 and DUT‐23‐Cu. These MOFs outperform the benchmark sorbent, HKUST‐1, both volumetrically and gravimetrically, under a pressure swing of 80 to 5 bar at 298 K. Although high uptake at elevated pressure is critical for achieving this performance, a low density of high‐affinity sites (coordinatively unsaturated metal centers) also contributes to a more complete release of stored gas at low pressure. The identification of these MOFs facilitates the efficient storage of natural gas via adsorption and provides further evidence of the utility of computational screening in identifying overlooked sorbents.

Formation of a Strong Heterogeneous Aluminum Lewis Acid on Silica

Abstract Al(OC(CF 3 ) 3 )(PhF) reacts with silanols present on partially dehydroxylated silica to form well‐defined ≡SiOAl(OC(CF 3 ) 3 ) 2 (O(Si≡) 2 ) ( 1 ). 27 Al NMR and DFT calculations with a small cluster model to approximate the silica surface show that the aluminum in 1 adopts a distorted trigonal bipyramidal coordination geometry by coordinating to a nearby siloxane bridge and a fluorine from the alkoxide. Fluoride ion affinity (FIA) calculations follow experimental trends and show that 1 is a stronger Lewis acid than B(C 6 F 5 ) 3 and Al(OC(CF 3 ) 3 )(PhF) but is weaker than Al(OC(CF 3 ) 3 ) and i Pr 3 Si + . Cp 2 Zr(CH 3 ) 2 reacts with 1 to form [Cp 2 ZrCH 3 ][≡SiOAl(OC(CF 3 ) 3 ) 2 (CH 3 )] ( 3 ) by methide abstraction. This reactivity pattern is similar to reactions of organometallics with the proposed strong Lewis acid sites present on Al 2 O 3 .

Multifunctional Charge and Hydrogen‐Bond Effects of Second‐Sphere Imidazolium Pendants Promote Capture and Electrochemical Reduction of CO 2 in Water Catalyzed by Iron Porphyrins**

Abstract Microenvironments tailored by multifunctional secondary coordination sphere groups can enhance catalytic performance at primary metal active sites in natural systems. Here, we capture this biological concept in synthetic systems by developing a family of iron porphyrins decorated with imidazolium (im) pendants for the electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR), which promotes multiple synergistic effects to enhance CO 2 RR and enables the disentangling of second‐sphere contributions that stem from each type of interaction. Fe‐ ortho ‐im(H) , which poises imidazolium units featuring both positive charge and hydrogen‐bond capabilities proximal to the active iron center, increases CO 2 binding affinity by 25‐fold and CO 2 RR activity by 2000‐fold relative to the parent Fe tetraphenylporphyrin ( Fe‐TPP ). Comparison with monofunctional analogs reveals that through‐space charge effects have a greater impact on catalytic CO 2 RR performance compared to hydrogen bonding in this context.

f‐ block MOFs: A Pathway to Heterometallic Transuranics

Abstract A novel series of heterometallic f ‐block‐frameworks including the first examples of transuranic heterometallic 238 U/ 239 Pu‐metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and a novel monometallic 239 Pu‐analog are reported. In combination with theoretical calculations, we probed the kinetics and thermodynamics of heterometallic actinide(An)‐MOF formation and reported the first value of a U‐to‐Th transmetallation rate. We concluded that formation of uranyl species could be a driving force for solid‐state metathesis. Density of states near the Fermi edge, enthalpy of formation, band gap, proton affinity, and thermal/chemical stability were probed as a function of metal ratios. Furthermore, we achieved 97 % of the theoretical maximum capacity for An‐integration. These studies shed light on fundamental aspects of actinide chemistry and also foreshadow avenues for the development of emerging classes of An‐containing materials, including radioisotope thermoelectric generators or metalloradiopharmaceuticals.

Fluorophilic Sigma(σ)‐Lock Self‐Healable Copolymers

Abstract Although F‐Containing molecules and macromolecules are often used in molecular biology to increase the binding with Lewis acidic groups by introducing favorable C−F dipoles, there is virtually no experimental evidence and limited understanding of the nature of these interactions, especially their role in synthetic polymeric materials. These studies elucidate the molecular origin of inter‐ and intra‐Chain interactions responsible for self‐healing of F‐Containing copolymers composed of pentafluorostyrene and n‐butyl acrylate units (p(PFS/nBA). Guided by dynamic surface oscillating force (SOF) and spectroscopic measurements supported by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, these studies show that the reformation of σ‐σ orbitals in −C−F of PFS and CH 3 CH 2 − of nBA units enables the recovery of entropic energy via fluorophilic‐σ‐lock van der Waals forces when PFS/nBA molar ratios are ~50/50. The strength of these interactions determined experimentally for self‐healable PFS/nBA compositions is in the order ~0.3 kcal/mol which primarily comes from fluorophilic‐σ‐lock (~70 %) contributions. These interactions are significantly diminished for non‐self‐healable counterparts. Strongly polarized −C−F σ orbitals create lateral dipolar forces enhancing the affinity towards −C−H orbitals, facilitating energetically favorable interactions. Entropic recovery driven by non‐Covalent bonding offers a valuable tool in designing materials with unique functionalities, particularly self‐healable batteries and energy storage devices.

Lewis Acidity of the SbCl 3 / o ‐chloranil System

Abstract While SbCl 3 is typically inert toward oxidation by ortho ‐quinones, we use o ‐chloranil to show that the outcome of such reactions may be altered by the presence of a donor such as triphenylphosphine oxide, which readily traps the SbCl 3 (cat Cl ) synthon (cat Cl = tetrachlorocatecholate) in the form of the corresponding adduct Ph 3 PO→SbCl 3 (cat Cl ). The same reaction in the presence of a chloride salt affords the corresponding antimonate anion [Cl 4 Sb(cat Cl )] − . Computational studies indicate that the putative SbCl 3 (cat Cl ) synthon has a higher chloride ion affinity than SbCl 5 , suggesting significant Lewis acidity. This property is further demonstrated by the use of the SbCl 3 / o ‐chloranil system for both THF polymerization and a Friedel–Crafts‐type alkylation of benzene using 1‐fluorooctane. Finally, the reaction of E ‐stilbene with o ‐chloranil in the presence of SbCl 3 affords the corresponding benzodioxene, suggesting that SbCl 3 may also operate as a redox‐active catalyst.

Cobalt‐Doped Bismuth Nanosheet Catalyst for Enhanced Electrochemical CO 2 Reduction to Electrolyte‐Free Formic Acid

Electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) to valuable liquid fuels, such as formic acid/formate (HCOOH/HCOO − ) is a promising strategy for carbon neutrality. Enhancing CO 2 RR activity while retaining high selectivity is critical for commercialization. To address this, we developed metal-doped bismuth (Bi) nanosheets via a facile hydrolysis method. These doped nanosheets efficiently generated high-purity HCOOH using a porous solid electrolyte (PSE) layer. Among the evaluated metal-doped Bi catalysts, Co-doped Bi demonstrated improved CO 2 RR performance compared to pristine Bi, achieving ~90 % HCOO − selectivity and boosted activity with a low overpotential of ~1.0 V at a current density of 200 mA cm −2 . In a solid electrolyte reactor, Co-doped Bi maintained HCOOH Faradaic efficiency of ~72 % after a 100-hour operation under a current density of 100 mA cm −2 , generating 0.1 M HCOOH at 3.2 V. Density functional theory (DFT) results revealed that Co-doped Bi required a lower applied potential for HCOOH generation from CO 2 , due to stronger binding energy to the key intermediates OCHO* compared to pure Bi. In conclusion, this study shows that metal doping in Bi nanosheets modifies the chemical composition, element distribution, and morphology, improving CO 2 RR catalytic activity performance by tuning surface adsorption affinity and reactivity.

A Thorough Characterization of the Tellurocyanate Anion

Tellurocyanate, [TeCN] − , is the heaviest group 16 congener of the cyanate anion, [OCN] − . Due to the relative instability of the C─Te bond, tellurocyanate chemistry has seen only scarce attention. Here, we present the facile synthesis and thorough characterization of [K@crypt-222][TeCN]. The anion is essentially linear with interatomic distances C─N = 1.150(6)Å and C─Te = 2.051(4)Å, thus approximating a C≡N triple bond and for C─Te a bond order between 1 and 2. Fully 13 C and 15 N labeled [Te 13 C 15 N] − allowed for the extraction of chemical shifts and all possible coupling constants ( 13 C = 77.8 ppm, 15 N = 285.7 ppm, 125 Te = −566 ppm, 1 J 13C-15N = 8 Hz, 1 J 13C-125Te = 748 Hz, 2 J1 5N-125Te = 55 Hz), which were also determined independently by quantum chemical calculations. In the series [ChCN] − (Ch = O─Te), [TeCN] − shows the strongest spin-orbit coupling (SOC) induced heavy-atom effect on the light-atom shielding (SO-HALA-effect). In contrast, 15 N shifts are also well described without considering relativistic effects and/or SOC. Negative-ion photoelectron spectroscopy was used to extract the electron affinity (EA = 3.034 eV) and spin-orbit splitting (3807 cm −1 ) of [TeCN] • . These values continue the trends of falling EA and rising SOC in the series [ChCN] • .

Polymer grafted aramid nanofiber reinforces immiscible waste polypropylene/poly(ethylene terephthalate)

Polypropylene (PP) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) are plastics commonly used for packaging because of their excellent barrier and mechanical properties. The properties of these plastics are often diminished after mechanical recycling, inevitably causing down-cycling. Furthermore, this problem is exacerbated when different kinds of polymers mix. Aramid nanofibers have the potential to improve the mechanical properties of polymers due to their excellent mechanical properties but their poor dispersion in polymers is a challenge. Grafting polymers onto nanofibers can help address this challenge. In this work, different loading levels (1%, 2%, and 5%) of polymer grafted aramid nanofibers (ANFs) are blended with waste PP/PET (90/10), simulating a PP waste stream containing traces of PET contaminants. Scanning electronic microscopy, rheology, and differential scanning calorimetry results show the affinity of PP functionalized aramid nanofibers (PP_ANF) towards the PP matrix. At 1 wt% of the nanofiber, the size of the PET droplets in the PP matrix of the PP_ANF blend range from 0.2 to 2.0 μm while that of unmodified ANF and PET_ANF blends are in the range of 0.1–6.2 and 0.5–7.4 μm, respectively. In summary, polymer grafted ANFs have the tendency of improving properties of its like polymers due to similarity in the grafting polymer and the polymer matrix.
