Novel n-type Device Architectures to Achieve 1 Volt V OC in Thin Film CdTe cells

The main goal of this project was to develop a novel thin film CdTe solar cell architecture based on an n-type absorber, which can overcome performance limitations associated with the typical p-Cd(Se)Te state-of-the-art architecture. Even today, the performance of the Cd(Se)Te cell continues to be limited by its open- circuit voltage, which is directly related to the net doping of the absorber. (currently @ approx. 900 mV for CdTe/CST device configuration). The proposed polycrystalline thin- film solar cell architecture was based on n-type CdTe (and CdSeTe) absorbers to overcome this limitation, since n-type CdTe absorbers offer advantages over p-type: (i) n-type dopability in CdTe is higher (than p), enabling higher doping and therefore higher V OC (ii) using a wide bandgap material as the p-contact, the n-CdTe cell can become a “bi-facial” cell, with the potential to increase energy yield up to 25% depending on environmental and mounting conditions.

Achieving an 80% Renewable Portfolio in Alaska's Railbelt: Cost Analysis

This study examines the system-level costs and benefits of increased renewable energy deployment in the Railbelt grid, in the context of a proposed 80% renewable portfolio standard (RPS). This work studies the period from 2024 to 2040 and uses a model that simulates the planning, evolution, and operation of the power system to identify the mix of resources that maintains system reliability at the lowest electricity system cost over the period of analysis. The model tracks several reliability metrics, including the ability to serve demand during all hours of the year, even when normal power system failures occur. The model includes several measures (and associated costs) to address the variable output of renewable resources, including additional operating reserves, fuel storage, cycling of fossil plants, and additional equipment needed to maintain system stability. The Reference (least-cost) scenario results in substantial deployment of renewable energy and cost savings, reaching about 76% of Railbelt generation derived from renewables in 2040. Annual savings average about $105 M/year from 2030 to 2040. About 50% of this generation is from wind by 2040. Enforcing an 80% RPS results in about a 2% cumulative reduction in net savings. Demand is met in all scenarios, relying heavily on use of existing hydropower and fossil-fueled generators during periods of low renewable output. Meeting the increase in variability will require substantial changes in how the system is operated, with inverter-based resources providing nearly 100% of electricity during some periods.

Data Architecture and Analytics Requirements for Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Applications to Achieve Condition-Based Maintenance

This report identified some of the important requirements that needs to be taken into consideration as part of the data evolution for the CBM application of a CWS in a NPP. In the data evolution process, the information is converted into insight leading into actions using advancements in AI/ML technologies. A notion of RESET AI: design, development, deployment, and operation principals are introduced to lifecycle of AI technologies. Towards the end of the report, we discussed how this CBM can be realized in a SDE. As path forward, this report lays the foundation for developing a more detailed industry guidance supporting data evolution for other plant applications like operations and plant support. These would be developed as part of ongoing research in the fiscal year 2023.

Achieving high-ZT in Te/Se-based thermoelectric materials via volume-constrained shear-induced plastic deformation

This study investigated the correlation between severe plastic deformation and microstructural evolution, along with the corresponding response in the thermoelectric performance. Specifically, severe plastic deformation introduced into intrinsically brittle thermoelectric materials like Bi 2 Te 3 - x Se x leads to microstructural changes ranging from nano- to micro- scales, including phase transformation, phase segregation, and stacking faults. The resultant residual strain and lattice defects in the Bi 2 Te 3-x Se x materials led to engineering of electronic bands, which increases the effective mass of electrons while controlling their concentration, thereby enhancing the power factor.

Clean Air as a Bonus for Achieving Energy-Related State Goals: A Review of Policies and Programs in 15 States

This report explores connections between six common areas for state action on energy-related issues — resilience, economic development, energy affordability, electrifying transportation, grid modernization, and using local resources — and reducing air emissions. Although clean air often is not a driver for such state actions, they nonetheless reduce a variety of emissions, including particulates, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, and greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide. The study spans 15 geographically diverse states: Arizona, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Utah. While these states have not adopted mandatory climate goals, they conduct a wide range of energy-related activities that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other air pollutants as a side benefit.

Overcoming magnetic susceptibility broadening in NMR of coin cell batteries to achieve chemical resolution

We develop methods for previously introduced NMR hardware that enables sensitive, noninvasive spectroscopic study of coin cell batteries, by overcoming the magnetic field distortions intrinsic to the battery limited chemical resolution. Specifically, we employ an interferometric NMR technique to overcome field heterogeneity, reducing peak widths by two orders of magnitude and obtaining chemically resolved solution-state spectra.
