Testing of PIP-II pre-production 650 MHz couplers in warm test stand and in cryomodule

650 MHz fundamental power couplers were developed for PIP-II project to deliver RF power for low-beta and high-beta elliptical cavities. Few prototypes were built and tested and after some modification we built 8 pre-production couplers (with few spares for vacuum side) for HB650 cryomodule. All couplers were successfully tested in pulse mode (up to 100kW) and in CW mode (up to 50kW) in test stand at full reflection at 8 phases. In baseline configuration with DC bias we do not see any multipactoring activity after short processing. We also tested power processing without bias for uncoated and TiN coated ceramic window. Results of these studies presented in this paper. One of the coupler was assembled on LB650 cavity and tested at cryogenic environment in STC cryostat at ~20kW power with full reflection at different reflection phase. We also demonstrated good result from power processing without bias for warm and cold cavity. Six couplers were assembled on HB650 cavities in pre-production cryomodule. Test results from cryomodule qualification is discussing in this paper.

Neutrino Scattering in the NOvA Near Detector

aNOvA is a long-baseline accelerator-based neutrino experiment based in the USA. NOvA uses an intense neutrino beam produced at Fermilab’s accelerator complex to make physics measurements of neutrino oscillations, neutrino cross sections, and much more. For its physics goals, NOvA uses two functionally-identical detectors. The Near Detector (ND) is situated at Fermilab, 1 km from the neutrino target and the Far Detector (FD) is located at Ash River, MN, a distance of 810 km from the neutrino source. The ND receives a high statistics neutrino flux which gives a unique opportunity for high-precision neutrino cross-section measurements and is used as a control for the oscillation analyses. In this talk/poster, I will give an overview of the NOvA experiment. I will also talk about the current and future status of the NOvA’s cross-section physics program.

Advanced Modeling of Plasma-based Particle Accelerators

Plasma-based acceleration (PBA) driven by an intense laser (LWFA) or particle beam (PWFA) can produce ultra-high accelerating fields in excess of a GV/cm. PBA could substantially reduce the size and cost of future linear collider facilities if deployed successfully. PBA enables compact tabletop accelerators that can provide lower energy GeV-class beams in a laboratory setting. PBA enables high quality beam generation suitable for x-ray free electron lasers (XFEL) via controllable methods of self-injection. Challenges in modeling and optimization of multi-stage PBA motivate the need for exascale computing and state-of-the-art PIC codes.

A Flexible Field Mapping System for Accelerator Magnets

Magnetic field mapping is a fundamental magnetic measurement method that typically uses Hall and NMR sensors. In magnet measurement facilities, such systems are likely used in various configurations suitable for a specific task at hand. To address this diversity, the authors developed a flexible field mapping system capable of being configured and tailored to each particular measurement case. The system needs to address the variability introduced by differences in sensors and their readout systems, probe positioning systems, power supply systems and in required mapping geometry (mapping space and grid, measurement steps and sequences). Although the discussed field mapping systems range from a self-propelled, multi-sensor mapper of a large detector magnet to a single 3D Hall sensor system to scan a small permanent magnet, they were all built with the same core mapping system. The variability present in field mapping systems and the measurement system architecture addressing this variability, as well as examples of several field mapping systems built in this architecture are presented.

Status Report of Joint RPI/ORNL NCSP Task for Thermal Neutron Total Cross Section Measurements

A new cold neutron moderator system was developed and constructed at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Gaerttner Linear Accelerator. This system was then used to measure the neutron total cross section in the thermal energy range for polyethylene, polystyrene, Lucite, and yttrium hydride. In tandem with these measurements, a fitting procedure was developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory to vary computationally simulated phonon density of states until a fit with differential and integral data was achieved. This model, combined with the new RPI total cross section data, was used to generate thermal scattering law files for the materials measured at RPI.

Investigating parameter trainability in the SNAP-Displacement protocol of a qudit system.

Our main focus is to investigate the sensitivity of training any of the SNAP parameters in the SNAP-Displacement protocol. We analyze conditions that could potentially lead to the Barren Plateau problem in a qudit system and draw comparisons with multi-qubit systems. The parameterized ansatz we consider consists of SNAP -Displacement blocks. We utilize techniques similar to those in [8] and [2] along with the concept of $t-$design. Through this analysis, we make the following key observations: (a) The trainability of a SNAP-parameter does not exhibit a preference for any particular direction within our cost function landscape, (b) using Haar measure properties, we establish new lemmas concerning the expectation of certain polynomial functions, and (c) utilizing these new lemmas, we identify a general condition that indicates an expected trainability advantage in a qudit system when compared to multi-qubit systems.

The Fermilab Accelerator Division Electronic Logbook (ADEL) at 10 Years

The current Fermilab Accelerator Division (AD) Electronic Logbook (ADEL) wasfirst released in 2013. It’s creation a decade ago represented a markedimprovement over the previous electronic logbook (eLog) and brought about the first consolidated Fermilab AD eLog built upon a relational database. Over the past ten years, ADEL has performed admirably, logging nearly one million user entered entries, comments and files, undergoing a revision and adding many additional features. However, as the work of Fermilab has changed, so has theuse of ADEL, some of which it had not been designed for.

A Collaboration Website for Muon Catalyzed Fusion and Muon Beam Production

This project sets up a website to support the nascent Muon Catalyzed Fusion collaboration including development of particle accelerators and transport beamlines for muon beams. The website is envisioned as having the general public information pages and private pages for collaboration members. Multimedia elements like images, text animations, and video lectures, covering a broad spectrum of topics will populate the educational site, covering muon facilities, to comprehensive explorations and seminal documents that define the science of Muon Catalyzed Fusion, Acceleration, Applications, Instrumentation, Beamline Design, and beam dynamics design codes. Ensuring compatibility across devices and operating systems, it also features integration with Google Docs for collaboration, a code repository (GitHub), a blog platform with comments (WordPress), the potential for ChatGPT integration and interactive graph plotting with Python Plotty to enhance data visualization. This project will maintain public and protected private pages, due to the proprietary nature of the work or research in progress. The public sections will be built to foster dissemination of information and highlight recent work within the NK Labs collaboration, including lectures, published papers, and regular blog posts with open commenting. The private section will support unpublished or nonpublic research, by facilitating collaborative efforts through integrated Google Docs and Python Plotty for shared graphing work. Ultimately, this project strives to make complex scientific knowledge more accessible to the public, foster enhanced collaboration, and serve as a platform for sharing cutting-edge research in Muon Catalyzed Fusion and Accelerators.

Data analysis in the ICARUS (SBN FD) Cosmic Ray Tagging system

When a cosmic ray particle collides with the upper atmosphere, it creates a shower of particles that transverse down to the Earth’s surface. These cosmogenic particles provide a challenging background in neutrino experiments. The Short Baseline Neutrino (SBN) Program is composed of three Liquid Argon Time Projection Chambers (LArTPCs) that will help us understand the elusive neutrino. Together with a Cosmic Ray Tagger (CRT) system, the ICARUS detector serves as the Far Detector in the SBN Program. The CRT surrounds the detector medium and tags incoming particles allowing us to combat the high flux of comic rays we experience at ICARUS. In this poster, I will show some of the first data analyses done with the fully commissioned CRT system, including studies using CRT timing information and CRT hit reconstruction.
