Extinct I-129 in C3 chondrites

Eight C3 chondrites were examined by the I-129 to Xe-129 dating method to determine whether their initial I-129/I-127 ratios, or R(0), correlate with any other properties. The R(0)'s range from 1.60 x 10 to the -4th to 1.09 x 10 to the -4th, corresponding to I to Xe ages from 2.0 Myr before to 6.7 Myr after the Murchison magnetite. Three C30's have essentially indistinguishable R(0)'s, while a fourth is undatable. Four C3V's show a distinct spread, ranging from 1.60 + or 0.07 x 10 to the -4th to 1.09 + or - 0.10 x 10 to the -4th. These R(0)'s correlate inversely with four other properties: I, Br, and Cd content, olivine composition, both percent mean deviation, and proportion of iron-poor olivine grains. The simplest model that accounts for the correlations with R(0) involves mixing of two iodine components in the solar nebula, associated with gas and grains, respectively. The second, of lower I-129/I-127 ratio, predominated at later times and thus became enriched in late-formed meteorites.

Trapped noble gases indicate lunar origin for Antarctic meteorite

The isotopic abundances of the noble gases (He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe) are reported for Antarctic ALHA 81005. It contains solar wind-implanted gases whose absolute and relative concentrations are quite similar to lunar regolith samples but not to other meteorites. ALHA 81005 also contains a large excess Ar-40 component which is identical to the component in lunar fines implanted from the lunar atmosphere. Large concentrations of cosmogenic Ne-21, Kr-82, and Xe-126 in ALHA 81005 indicate a total cosmic ray exposure age of at least 200 million years. The noble gas data alone are strong evidence for a lunar origin of this meteorite.

Noble gas component organization in Apollo 14 breccia 14318 I-129 and Pu-244 regolith chronology

Drozd et al. (1972) have first detected the presence of Xe-129 in lunar material. Bernatowicz et al. (1979, 1980) established that this xenon component resides exclusively on grain surfaces and confirmed previous observations that it is less tightly bound than other surface components. The present investigation extends many of the observations made on the basis of a study of the 14301 to 14318, which is the only other lunar regolith breccia for which the isotopic structure of 'parentless xenon' has been accurately resolved. Actually this isotope has two parents, including Pu-244 and I-129, which are both now extinct. Attention is given to the analyzed samples, the employed analytical methods, the petrology and chemistry of the grain size separates, and stepwise heating experiments. On the basis of the obtained results, it is concluded that the I-Pu-Xe system can be used as a chronometer.

Laboratory simulation of meteoritic noble gases. I - Sorption of xenon on carbon: Trapping experiments

The sorption of Xe-127 at 5 x 10 to the -7th atm onto carbon black, pyrolyzed polyvinylidene chloride, and pyrolyzed acridine at 100-1000 C for 5 min-240 h is measured experimentally by gamma spectrometry. The results are presented in tables and graphs and characterized in detail. The tightly bound Xe remaining in the samples after 4000 min pumping at temperatures above 100 C is found to comprise two components: a low-temperature component attributed to physisorption within an atomic-scale labyrinth of micropores, and a high-temperature component due to volume diffusion. The implications for the trapping of noble gases near grain surfaces of amorphous carbon in meteorites are considered.

Unequilibrated ordinary chondrites - A tentative subclassification based on volatile-element content

In view of the lack of correlation sometimes encountered between the volatile content and metamorphism measures of primitiveness for unequilibrated ordinary chondrites (UOCs), a tentative classification scheme is developed which is based on volatile content and complements the Sears et al. (1980) scheme based on metamorphism. The classification is based primarily on C and Xe, which are not significantly affected by shock-induced reheating. It is noted that novel clues to the formation of chondrites may be derivable from Xe and C; their concentrations in UOCs vary by a factor greater than 5, yet the Xe/C ratio remains nearly constant at 0.0034 of the solar system ratio.

The composition of lunar noble gases traped 2.5 AE and 3.5 AE ago

The times when the soils 74001 and 73261 were exposed on the lunar surface were determined by the U-235 - Xe-136 dating method. The isotopic composition of the trapped noble gases in these two soils is compared with that of the surface correlated noble gases in the young soils 12001 and in the present day solar wind. The surface correlated trapped gases are a mixture of implanted solar wind particles and retrapped lunar atmospheric gases. The observed changes are interpreted as a result of decreasing outgassing of radiogenic Ar-40 and perhaps He-4 and of fissiogenic Xe from the lunar crust. The old soils probably also contain surface correlated Kr-80 and Kr-82 produced by secondary cosmic ray neutron capture of adsorbed or retrapped bromine. To some extent the isotopic composition of the trapped gases in old lunar soil may also have been altered due to diffusion loss from material of low retentivity.

Release of noble gases and nitrogen from grain-surface sites in lunar ilmenite by closed-system oxidation

Noble gases and nitrogen were extracted from a 100 to 150 microns ilmenite separate from lunar soil 71501 by closed system stepped heating in approx. 10 torr O2 at 300 C, 400 C, 500 C, 600 C and 630 C, followed by stepped pyrolysis at ten temperatures between 680 C and approx. 1500 C. The five oxidation steps together liberated approx. 65% of the total He-4, 45% of the Ne-20, 23% of the N-14 and Ar-36, 12% of the Kr-84 and 8% of the Xe-132 in the sample; Ne-20/Ar-36 and Ne-20/Ne-22 ratios agree with the solar wind composition experiment, and Kr-84/Ar-36 and Xe-132/Ar-36 are within approx. 10% of Cameron's estimates for the sun and solar wind. The remaining gases, released above 630 C by pyrolysis, are strongly fractionated with respect to the SWC-Cameron solar wind elemental composition. Large concentrations of fractionated noble gases in grain interiors, their virtual absence in the relatively unfractionated surface gas reservoir, and the high N/noble gas ratio all imply that most of the solar wind noble gases initially implanted in grain surfaces are eventually lost by diffusion. Loss limits can be estimated by considering two given scenarios. It is concluded tat approx. 70 to 97% or more of the Ar implanted in 71501 ilmenite grains has diffusively escaped.

Live 129I-129Xe dating

A technique of cosmic ray exposure age dating using cosmic ray produced I-129 and Xe-129 components is discussed. The live I-129 - Xe-129 method provides an ideal monitor for cosmic ray flux variations on the 10(7)y - 10(8)y time-scale. It is based on low-energy neutron reactions on Te, and these data, when coupled to those from other methods, may facilitate the detection of complex exposure histories.

I-129/I-127 variations among enstatite chondrites

The iodine isotopic compositions and corresponding I-Xe ages were obtained for eight enstatite chondrites, bringing the total number of enstatite chondrites examined by the I-Xe technique to 11. Iodine isotopic compositions of these 11 chondrites indicate a well-defined hiatus correlated with the hiatus in chemical composition defining the two distinct enstatite groups: EH(4,5) and EL(6). Judging by the I-129/I-127 ratios and assuming that both the EH and EL groups originated from a reservoir with a uniform initial iodine isotopic composition, the EH(4,5) chondrites were estimated to be about 4 mln older than the El chondrites.

High-current plasma contactor neutralizer system

A plasma-contactor neutralizer system is described, for the stabilizing the Orbiter's potential during flights of the Atmospheric Laboratory for Applications and Science missions. The plasma contactor neutralizer will include a Xe plasma source that can provide steady-state ion-emission currents of up to 1.5 A. The Orbiter's potential will be maintained near that of the surrounding space plasma during electron-beam accelerator firings through a combination of ion emission from the Xe plasma source and electron collection from the ambient space plasma. Configuration diagrams and block diagrams are presented along with the performance characteristics of the system.

The determination of accurate dipole polarizabilities alpha and gamma for the noble gases

Accurate static dipole polarizabilities alpha and gamma of the noble gases He through Xe were determined using wave functions of similar quality for each system. Good agreement with experimental data for the static polarizability gamma was obtained for Ne and Xe, but not for Ar and Kr. Calculations suggest that the experimental values for these latter ions are too low.

Early outgassing of Mars supported by differential water solubility of iodine and xenon

The Martian atmosphere has a high X-129/Xe-132 ratio compared to the Martian mantle. As Xe-129 is the daughter product of the extinct nuclide I-129, a means of fractionating iodine from xenon early in Martian history appears necessary to account for the X-129/Xe-132 ratios of its known reservoirs. A model is presented here to account for the Marian xenon data which relies on the very different solubilities of xenon and iodine in water to fractionate them after outgassing. Atmospheric xenon is lost by impact erosion during heavy bombardment, followed by release of Xe-129 produced from I-129 decay in the crust.

Methane measurement by the Pioneer Venus large probe neutral mass spectrometer

The Pioneer Venus Large Probe Mass Spectrometer detected a large quantity of methane as it descended below 20 km in the atmosphere of Venus. Terrestrial methane and Xe-136, both originating in the same container and flowing through the same plumbing, were deliberately released inside the mass spectrometer for instrumental reasons. However, the Xe-136 did not exhibit behavior similar to methane during Venus entry, nor did CH4 in laboratory simulations. The CH4 was deuterium poor compared to Venus water and hydrogen. While the inlet to the mass spectrometer was clogged with sulfuric acid droplets, significant deuteration of CH4 and its H2 progeny was observed. Since the only source of deuterium identifiable was water from sulfuric acid, we have concluded that we should correct the HDO/H2O ratio in Venus water from 3.2 x 10(exp -2) to (5 plus or minus 0.7) x 10(exp -2). When the probe was in the lower atmosphere, transfer of deuterium from Venus HDO and HD to CH4 can account quantitatively for the deficiencies recorded in HDO and HD below 10 km, and consequently, the mysterious gradients in water vapor and hydrogen mixing ratios we have reported. The revision in the D/H ratio reduces the mixing ratio of water vapor (and H2) reported previously by a factor of 3.2/5. We are not yet able to say whether the methane detected was atmospheric or an instrumental artifact. If it was atmospheric, its release must have been episodic and highly localized. Otherwise, the large D/H ratio in Venus water and hydrogen could not be maintained.

Thermodynamic data for fifty reference elements

This report is a compilation of thermodynamic functions of 50 elements in their standard reference state. The functions are C(sub p)(sup 0), (H(sup 0)(T) - H(sup 0)(0)), S(sup 0)(T), and -(G(sup 0)(T) - H(sup 0)(O)) for the elements Ag, Al, Ar, B, Ba, Be, Br2, C, Ca, Cd, Cl2, Co, Cr, Cs, Cu, F2, Fe, Ge, H2, He, Hg, I2, K, Kr, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, N2, Na, Nb, Ne, Ni, O2, P, Pb, Rb, S, Si, Sn, Sr, Ta, Th, Ti, U, V, W, Xe, Zn, and Zr. Deuterium D2 and electron gas e(sup -) are also included. The data are tabulated as functions of temperature as well as given in the form of least-squares coefficients for two functional forms for C(sub p)(sup 0) with integration constants for enthalpy and entropy. One functional form for C(sub p)(sup 0) is a fourth-order polynomial and the other has two additional terms, one with T(exp -1) and the other with T(exp -2). The gases Ar, D2, e(sup -), H2, He, Kr, N2, Ne, O2, and Xe are tabulated for temperatures from 100 to 20,000 K. The remaining gases Cl2 and F2 are tabulated from 100 to 6000 K and 1000 to 6000 K. The second functional form for C(sub p)(sup 0) has an additional interval from 6000 to 20,000 K for the gases tabulated to 20,000 K. The fits are constrained so that the match at the common temperature endpoints. The temperature ranges for the condensed species vary with range of the data, phase changes, and shapes of the C(sub p)(sup 0) curves.

Search for Cm-248 in the early solar system

Possible evidence for the presence of Cm-248 in the early solar system was reported from fission gas studies (Rao and Gopalan, 1973) and recently from studies of very high nuclear track densities (not less than 5 x 10 exp 8/sq cm) in the merrillite of the H4 chondrite Forest Vale (F.V.) (Pellas et al., 1987). We report here an analysis of the isotopic abundances of xenon in F.V. phosphates and results of track studies in phosphate/pyroxene contacts. The fission xenon isotopic signature clearly identifies Pu-244 as the extinct progenitor. We calculate an upper limit Cm-248/Pu-244 to be less than 0.0015 at the beginning of Xe retention in F.V. phosphates. This corresponds to an upper limit of the ratio Cm-248/U-235 of not greater than 5 x 10 exp -5 further constraining the evidence for any late addition of freshly synthesized actinide elements just prior to solar system formation. The fission track density observed after annealing the phosphates at 290C (1 hr, which essentially erases spallation recoil tracks) is also in agreement with the Pu-244 abundance inferred from fission Xe. The spallation recoil tracks produced during the 76 Ma cosmic-ray exposure account for the very high track density in merrillites.

Contamination control and plume assessment of low-energy thrusters

A method for evaluating the effects of gases originating from plumes or other direct sources impinging on sensitive surfaces located within their field of view is presented. The method is applied to an Xe ion plasma generator with a thrust of a few mN located near a cryogenic surface. The method is based on experimentally derived plume descriptions of emitted low-pressure vented gases and test results of plume distributions from a similar ion engine. It is concluded that the plume of the Xe neutrals represented by a cosine squared function of the angle is a possible contamination source for certain surfaces of the spacecraft.

Noble gas evidence of an aqueous reservoir near the surface of Mars more recently than 1.3 Ga

Considerable evidence points to a Martian origin of the SNC meteorites. One of these meteorites, Nakhla, contains a leachable component which has an elevated Xe-129/Xe-132 ratio relative to its Kr-84/Xe-132 ratio when compared to the approximately linear array defined by Chassigny, most shergottites, and lithology C of EETA 79001. This array is thought to be a mixing line between Martian mantle and Martian atmosphere. The leachable component probably consists in part of iddingsite, an alteration product produced by interaction of olivine with aqueous fluid at temperatures lower than 150 C. The radiogenic Xe component may represent a distinct reservoir in the Martian crust or mantle. More plausibly, it is Martian atmosphere, fractionated by solution in liquid water and by interaction with sediment. The crystallization age of Nakhla is 1.3 Ga. Its low shock state suggests that it was ejected from near the surface of Mars. Liquid water is required for the formation of iddingsite. These observations provide further evidence for the near surface existence of aqueous fluids more recently than 1.3 Ga.

A search for noble-gas evidence for presolar oxide grains

Early results from an ongoing search for isotopically distinctive noble gases as evidence for presolar oxide grains are presented. With some qualifications, we do not see such evidence in spinel rich acid residue fractions from the Allende meteorite. We remain hopeful that less abundant mineral separates may yet be fruitful. Presolar grains, micro-diamonds, silicon carbide, and graphite, were found in primitive meteorites. While the abundances of these three refractory C rich grains are low, a few hundred ppm, a few ppm, & less than 1 ppm, respectively in primitive meteorites, they are tagged with high concentrations of isotopically anomalous noble gas components, Xe-HL, KR & Xe-s and Ne-E(H), and Ne-E(L). These tags have served as tracers and allowed the development of techniques for their purification and eventual identification. One might expect similar amounts of refractory presolar oxides to have survived, but so far only three cases exist for their identification. The first two cases are individual corundum oxide grains. Huss et al. found one such grain from an Orgueil residue with an Al-26/Al-27 ratio of 8.9 x 10(exp -5), about 18 times higher than the canonical initial solar system value. The second corundum grain, from Murchison, was found by Nittler et al. to have unusual oxygen in addition to a similar Al-26/Al-27 ratio of 8.7 x 10(exp -4). The oxygen was depleted in O-18 by 22 percent and enriched in O-17 by a factor of 2. The third case is a measurement by Zinner et al. on an aggregate of fine grained spinels from a Murray residue with an O-17 enrichment and a possible O-18 depletion similar to the second grain, but much subdued. This is consistent with a few such presolar grains diluted by a much larger population of isotopically normal corundum grains and an even larger number of normal spinel grains.
