NOvA Current Status and Future Prospects

NOvA is a two detector, long baseline, neutrino oscillation experiment utilizing the NuMI beamline at Fermilab to study neutrino oscillations through muon (anti)neutrino disappearance and electron (anti)neutrino appearance. NOvA's primary goals are to make determinations of the neutrino mass hierarchy and the octant of ${\theta}_{23}$, and to measure possible CP violation. Along with standard three flavor neutrino oscillations, NOvA data is used to study cross sections in the near detector, neutrino oscillations beyond the three flavor framework such as sterile neutrinos and non-standard interactions, along with other exotic neutrino interactions from astrophysical sources including supernovae. I will provide an overview of the NOvA detectors, share some current results from the experiment, and discuss the future of NOvA operations and analyses.

2023 FORCE Development Status Update

Technical and economic analysis of integrated energy systems (IES) using software models is a complex process requiring multiple commodity market decision analysis, optimal control, process modeling, and stochastic analysis. Many assumptions used in traditional energy analysis tools do not hold in future energy markets with significant storage and variable renewable energy sources (VRE), let alone with multiple commodity markets. Capturing these intricate elements for accurate techno-economic analysis of IES led to the development of the Framework for Optimization of ResourCes and Economics (FORCE) tool suite under the U.S. Department of Energy’s Integrated Energy Systems crosscutting technology program. With the aim of a full framework release in 2025, many improvements to the FORCE tool suite were developed in fiscal year 2023 (FY23). These improvements broadly fit into three focuses for development of FORCE: capability, accessibility, and reliability. Capability refers to the ability of FORCE to accurately model the technical and economic viability of various IES. Accessibility refers to ease-of-use for new and existing IES analysts to efficiently set up, analyze, and produce results using FORCE. Reliability refers to the consistency of the software, allowing consistency to analysis regardless of erstwhile changes to the software. In addition to many smaller changes, there are three major capability improvements in FORCE in FY23. In summary, FORCE developments in FY23 have moved us close to all the capability requirements for FORCE 1.0 to be delivered in FY25. Inclusion of Bayesian optimization, resilience metrics, and levelized cost analysis expand the capability, accessibility, and reliability of FORCE.

Status of CEBAF Upgrades

Extending CEBAF energy reach by increasing the number of recirculations, while using the existing SRF system is being explored. Proposed energy upgrade is based on a new approach to multi-pass acceleration of electrons in a single Fixed Field Alternating Gradient (FFA) beam line, configured with Halbach-style permanent magnets. Encouraged by recent success of CBETA, a proposal was formulated to nearly ?double? CEBAF energy by replacing the highest energy arcs with a pair of FFA arcs. The new non-scaling FFA arcs would support simultaneous transport of additional 6 passes with energies spanning a factor of two. One of the challenges of the multi-pass (11) linac optics is to assure uniform focusing in a vast range of energies, in a fixed field lattice. Here, we propose a triplet lattice that would provide a stable periodic solution covering energy ratio of 1:33. The current CEBAF injection at 123 MeV, makes optical matching in the first linac virtually impossible due to extremely high energy span ratio (1:175). Replacement of the current injector with a 650 MeV recirculating injector will alleviate that problem. Orbital and optical matching from the FFA arcs to the linacs is implemented as a compact non-adiabatic insert. Presented scheme would promise to deliver a 22 GeV beam with normalized emittance of 76 mm·mrad and with a relative energy spread of 1×10-3. Further recirculation beyond 22 GeV is limited by large, 974 MeV per electron, energy loss due to synchrotron radiation

Status and perspective of ICARUS at the Fermilab Short-Baseline Neutrino Program

The ICARUS collaboration has employed the 760-ton T600 detector in a successful three-year physics run at the underground LNGS laboratory, performing a sensitive search for LSND-like anomalous appearance in the CERN Neutrino to Gran Sasso beam, which contributed to the constraints on the allowed neutrino oscillation parameters to a narrow region around 1 eV. After a significant overhaul at CERN, the T600 detector has been installed at Fermilab. In 2020 the cryogenic commissioning began with detector cool down, liquid argon filling and recirculation. ICARUS then started its operation collecting the first neutrino events from the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) and the Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) beam off-axis, which were used to test the ICARUS event selection, reconstruction and analysis algorithms. ICARUS successfully completed its commissioning phase in June 2022, moving then to data taking for neutrino oscillation physics, aiming at first to either confirm or refute the claim by Neutrino-4 short-baseline reactor experiment. ICARUS will also perform measurements of neutrino cross sections with the NuMI beam and several Beyond Standard Model searches. After the first year of operations, ICARUS will jointly search for evidence of sterile neutrinos with the Short-Baseline Near Detector (SBND), within the Fermilab Short-Baseline Neutrino (SBN) program. In this presentation, preliminary technical results from the ICARUS data with the BNB and NuMI beams are presented both in terms of performance of all ICARUS subsystems and its capability to select and reconstruct neutrino events.

Deep Vadose Zone Monitoring Test Bed (FY23 Status Report)

A subsurface air injection at the Hanford Site’s Deep Vadose Zone Monitoring Test Bed was completed to realize a change in subsurface hydrologic conditions in accordance with a soil desiccation remedy. The injection mimicked a previous injection at the site that was performed in accordance with a vadose zone treatability study. Unlike the previous test which relied on electrical methods only, the change in hydrologic conditions during the recent test was also monitored using cross-hole seismic sensing methods to assess the ability of the seismic methods to evaluate changes in moisture conditions of desiccated sediment at the field scale. Data from in situ neutron probes indicates a reduction of soil moisture in the vicinity of the injection well due to the air injection. Similar changes were observed in the time-lapse electrical resistivity and seismic data, which indicates a loss of soil moisture over time. Tomographic inversions of the time-lapse geophysical data illustrate the 2D and 3D features of the soil moisture distribution over time. Time-lapse electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) results show a reduction in the electrical conductivity of the subsurface in the vicinity of the injection well, with most changes occurring within the screened interval. Similar patterns are observed in the seismic tomography results, with both methods illustrating two lobe-shaped features of reduced soil moisture. Use of seismic and ERT technologies in tandem takes advantage of two complementary geophysical monitoring technologies, providing increased sensitivity to specific hydrologic conditions. The multiphysics approach, therefore, has the potential to improve the ability to estimate subsurface moisture conditions from sensor-based and remotely sensed geophysical data that will ultimately improve the ability of remediation contractors to evaluate remedy performance.

An Online Prototype Toolset for Predicting and Optimizing P&T Performance (FY23 Status Report)

A new web-based toolset is being developed to support ongoing remediation optimization efforts and implementation of an adaptive site management strategy for the 200 West Area Pump-and-Treat (P&T) system at the Hanford Site. This toolset, comprising the well performance index tool and the well optimization pre-screening tool, will offer a user-friendly interface to predict and optimize the P&T well network’s performance at a preliminary level. Efforts in fiscal year (FY) 2023 focused on three main components: updating the existing deep learning model for predicting P&T performance, designing and developing a prototype of a web-based performance index tool, and initiating the conceptual design of the well optimization pre-screening tool. The well performance index tool is based on a pre-trained deep learning model that allows users to select a target contaminant and well screen length, then visualize the predicted performance of potential new wells across the site. The well optimization pre-screening tool includes two separate modules: the pre-computed scenario viewer, which organizes and visualizes offline optimization simulation results, and the quick analysis module, which provides real-time model prediction using user-specified well locations. In FY24, the plan is to add web-based applications to SOCRATES for both the well performance prediction tool and the optimization prescreening tool, with accompanying user and theory guides. These tools are intended to enable an accessible, easily applied, and transparent approach to remedy planning and decision-making.

Status Report on Thermal Extraction Modeling within HYBRID

Idaho National Laboratory continues to be at the forefront of advanced reactor systems and integrated energy systems (IES) research. The HYBRID modeling repository is the computational modeling repository used to evaluate potential IES configurations. To support IES analysis, it is necessary to develop models that can evaluate a range of thermal integration points within given energy conversion systems. This work includes as many technologies as possible anticipating that many technologies will be deployed to broadly reduce climate impacts of energy intensive processes. To provide this analysis, a new balance of plant model has been generated. This report will discuss progress on this new main model and discuss nominal conditions for the primary reactor types contained within HYBRID.

HYBRID Modeling Validation and Verification Status Matrix

The HYBRID modeling repository is a premier resource for integrated energy systems modeling. HYBRID models have been developed since 2015 to describe the physical operation of tightly coupled thermal systems including power generators, thermal transport systems, thermal storage, thermal-to-electric conversion systems, and other thermal applications. Due to the increased size of the repository, a concise summary matrix of available models is desired. This matrix will consolidate not only the list of available models but also indicate original information sources, publications that have model examples, and level of validation and verification that exists for the models. Validation and verification (V&V) levels begin from simplified algebraic relationship and advance to dynamic data validation. Moving forward, as new models are contributed to HYBRID, their V&V level will be included, updating this matrix.

Corrosion-Resistant Coatings on Spent Nuclear Fuel Canisters to Mitigate and Repair Potential Stress Corrosion Cracking (FY23 Status)

This report summarizes the activities performed by Sandia National Laboratories in FY23 to identify and test coating materials for the prevention, mitigation, and/or repair of potential chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking in spent nuclear fuel dry storage canisters. This work continues efforts by Sandia National Laboratories that are summarized in previous reports from FY20 through FY22 on the same topic. In FY23, Sandia National Laboratories, in collaboration with five industry partners through a memorandum of understanding, evaluated the physical, mechanical, and corrosion-resistance properties of eight different coating systems. The evaluation included thermal and radiation environments relevant to various time periods of storage for spent nuclear fuel canisters. The coating systems include polymeric (polyetherketoneketone, modified polyimide/polyurea, modified phenolic resin, epoxy), organic/inorganic ceramic hybrids (silane-based polyurethane hybrid and a quasi-ceramic sol-gel polyurethane hybrid), and coatings utilizing a Zn-rich primer applied to stainless steel coupons. The results and implications of these tests are summarized in this report. These analyses will be used to identify the most effective coatings for potential use on spent nuclear fuel dry storage canisters and to identify specific needs for further optimization of coating technologies for application on spent nuclear fuel canisters.
