“Breathing” organic cation to stabilize multiple structures in low-dimensional Ge-, Sn-, and Pb-based hybrid iodide perovskites
Low-dimensional hybrid inorganic–organic perovskites are excellent candidates for stable optoelectronic devices. The dimensionality of these perovskites depends largely on the organic and inorganic compositions, as well as the synthetic conditions. We report five new hybrid iodides, (ETU) 4 Ge 5 I 18 , (ETU)GeI 4 , (ETU)SnI 4 , (ETU)PbI 4 , and (ETU) 3 Pb 2 I 10 using only one type of organic cation, namely, S-(2-aminoethyl)isothiouronium (ETU). (ETU)GeI 4 and (ETU)SnI 4 belong to the (110)-oriented structure-type with “3 × 3” sawtooth corrugated layers and crystallize in a structure with the orthorhombic space group Pbca. (ETU) 4 Ge 5 I 18 crystallizes in a structure with the triclinic space group P$\bar{1}$with combining macron], featuring a 2D layered structure with combinations of corner, edge, and face-sharing [GeI 6 ] octahedra. For the Pb-based series, (ETU)PbI 4 has the conventional (100) – oriented 2D type whereas (ETU) 3 Pb 2 I 10 has a unique 0D structure. Remarkably, the unstable 2D orange-phase (ETU)PbI 4 transforms to a stable 0D yellow phase (ETU) 3 Pb 2 I 10 , accompanied by the reduction of the C–S–C angle of the organic cation ETU. The optical band gaps are largely regulated by the diverse types of structure and are in the range of 1.8 eV to 2.8 eV. (ETU)SnI 4 is the only material showing notable photoluminescence at room-temperature. Our work showcases the flexibility of the organic cation in determining the structural dimensionality and provides a new strategy in generating new hybrid materials.
Microwave-assisted intercalation: exploring electronic and structural features of metastable MMo 6 S 8 (M = Ag, Sn)
This study presents a facile method to synthesize Type I Chevrel phases and utilizes X-ray absorption spectroscopy to reveal how intercalant identity can modify charge transfer and cluster anisotropy.
Erratum: “Breaking covalent bonds in the context of the many-body expansion (MBE). I. The purported ‘first row anomaly’ in XH n (X = C, Si, Ge, Sn; n = 1–4)” [J. Chem. Phys. 156, 244303 (2022)]
We have noted typographical errors in TABLE V of J. Chem. Phys. 156, 244303 (2022). Specifically, the values of the angles φ HχH for the XH 2 species in both the ( 3 B 1 ) and ( 1 A 1 ) states were incorrectly reported as half of the correct values. Additionally, the values of the same angles for the XH 3 and XH 4 species were reported correctly.

High tide: a systematic search for ellipsoidal variables in ASAS-SN
ABSTRACT The majority of non-merging stellar mass black holes are discovered by observing high energy emission from accretion processes. Here, we pursue the large, but still mostly unstudied population of non-interacting black holes and neutron stars by searching for the tidally induced ellipsoidal variability of their stellar companions. We start from a sample of about 200 000 rotational variables, semiregular variables, and eclipsing binary stars from the All-Sky Automated Survey for Supernovae. We use a χ2 ratio test followed by visual inspection to identify 369 candidates for ellipsoidal variability. We also discuss how to combine the amplitude of the variability with mass and radius estimates for observed stars to calculate a minimum companion mass, identifying the most promising candidates for high mass companions.
The SN Ia runaway LP 398-9: detection of circumstellar material and surface rotation
ABSTRACT A promising progenitor scenario for Type Ia supernovae (SNeIa) is the thermonuclear detonation of a white dwarf in a close binary system with another white dwarf. After the primary star explodes, the surviving donor can be spontaneously released as a hypervelocity runaway. One such runaway donor candidate is LP 398-9, whose orbital trajectory traces back ≈105 yr to a known supernova remnant. Here, we report the discovery of carbon-rich circumstellar material around LP 398-9, revealed by a strong infrared excess and analysed with follow-up spectroscopy. The circumstellar material is most plausibly composed of inflated layers from the star itself, mechanically and radioactively heated by the past companion’s supernova. We also detect a 15.4 h periodic signal in the UV and optical light curves of LP 398-9, which we interpret as surface rotation. The rotation rate is consistent with theoretical predictions from this supernova mechanism, and the brightness variations could originate from surface inhomogeneity deposited by the supernova itself. Our observations strengthen the case for this double-degenerate SNIa progenitor channel, and motivate the search for more runaway SNIa donors.
