Interplay of Open-Shell Spin-Coupling and Jahn–Teller Distortion in Benzene Radical Cation Probed by X-ray Spectroscopy

Here we report a theoretical investigation and elucidation of the X-ray absorption spectra of neutral benzene and of the benzene cation. The generation of the cation by multiphoton ultraviolet (UV) ionization and the measurement of the carbon K-edge spectra of both species using a table-top high-harmonic generation source are described in the companion experimental paper. We show that the 1sC → π transition serves as a sensitive signature of the transient cation formation, as it occurs outside of the spectral window of the parent neutral species. Moreover, the presence of the unpaired (spectator) electron in the π-subshell of the cation and the high symmetry of the system result in significant differences relative to neutral benzene in the spectral features associated with the 1sC → π* transitions. High-level calculations using equation-of-motion coupled-cluster theory provide the interpretation of the experimental spectra and insight into the electronic structure of benzene and its cation. The prominent split structure of the 1sC → π* band of the cation is attributed to the interplay between the coupling of the core → π* excitation with the unpaired electron in the π-subshell and the Jahn–Teller distortion. The calculations attribute most of the splitting (~1–1.2 eV) to the spin coupling, which is visible already at the Franck–Condon structure, and we estimate the additional splitting due to structural relaxation to be around ~0.1–0.2 eV. These results suggest that X-ray absorption with increased resolution might be able to disentangle electronic and structural aspects of the Jahn–Teller effect in the benzene cation.

Simulations of Attosecond Metallization in Quartz and Diamond Probed with Inner-Shell Transient Absorption Spectroscopy

When dielectrics are hit with intense infrared (IR) laser pulses, transient metalization can occur. The initial attosecond dynamics behind this metallization are not entirely understood. Therefore, simulations are needed to understand this process and to help interpret experimental observations of it, such as with attosecond transient absorption (ATA). In this paper, we present first-principles simulations of ATA based on bulk-mimicking clusters and real-time time-dependent density functional theory (RT-TDDFT), with Koopmans-tuned range-separated hybrid functionals and Gaussian basis sets. Our method gives good agreement with the experiment for the breakdown threshold in silica and diamond. This breakdown voltage corresponds to a Keldysh parameter of approximately one and thus involves a transition to a regime where the dynamics are driven by tunneling. Pumping at an amplitude just below this value causes a mixture of multiphoton and tunneling excitations across the band gap to occur. The computed extreme ultraviolet and X-ray attosecond transient spectra also agree well with the experiment and show a decrease in optical density due to the transient population of the conduction band from the IR field. First-principles approaches such as this are valuable for interpreting the complicated modulations in a spectrum and for guiding future attosecond experiments on solids.

An Experimental and Theoretical Study of the Valence Shell Electronic Structure of Nitromethane

Vibrationally resolved CH 3 NO 2 and CD 3 NO 2 photoelectron spectra and angular distribution parameters, β, have been measured in the photon energy range 20–80 eV. This allows a comprehensive investigation of conflicting literature interpretations of the two outermost photoelectron bands, complemented by high-level calculations characterizing the three O lone-pair-based orbital ionizations expected in this region. Franck–Condon simulations allow the regular vibrational progressions observed at the beginning of the first and second bands to be assigned as predominantly modes v 5 and v 6 of the D 0 and D 2 cation states, respectively. Irregular structuring observed midband in both bands is attributed to avoided crossings between the adiabatic D 0 /D 1 and D 1 /D 2 states as identified in potential surface cuts taken along the v 5 and v 6 normal mode coordinates. The associated D 0 /D 1 and D 1 /D 2 conical intersections were located and characterized, allowing possible vibronic coupling and its impact on the photoelectron spectra of the D 0 , D 1 , and D 2 states to be discussed. This helps rationalize the apparently missing D 1 ionization in this region, although some contribution by this state may be identifiable in the β-parameter spectra. Theoretical analysis of the complete valence region spectrum identifies the early breakdown of the independent electron model beyond these first two bands.
