Application of the Concepts of Load State, Load Space, and Output Space to Strain-Gage Balances

The concepts of load state, load space, and output space are used to describe elements of the development of a load prediction process for a six–component strain–gage balance. The use of these terms adds clarity during the selection of the independent and dependent variables for the development of the load prediction process. First, the control volume model of a strain–gage balance is reviewed as it helps better understand the role of loads, outputs, and state variables during the load prediction. Then, the description of the absolute load datum in both the load space and the output space is discussed. It is concluded that the use of the difference between a raw output and the natural zero of a balance gage has a key advantage for the definition of the output space. In that case, the origin of the output space will also describe the absolute load datum of the balance. Finally, details of the application of the concepts of load state, load space, and output space to two commonly used balance load prediction methods are discussed.

Linear and Geometrically Nonlinear Structural Shape Sensing from Strain Data

An aircraft’s shape must be measured during flight to implement active shape controls such as active trim shape, divergence, and sonic boom controls. A basis function method for linear as well as geometrically nonlinear structural shape sensing is proposed in this study. Basis functions can be mode shapes, linear static deformation shapes, and/or geometrically nonlinear static deformation shapes. The proposed basis function method is validated using a high-aspect-ratio wing, a swept test plate, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration X-59 aircraft. A large structural deformation of a high-aspect-ratio wing is successfully captured using the proposed basis function method with less than 0.3%prediction error at the wing-tip section. The basis function method gives excellent deformation prediction, even with stress concentration. Performance of the basis functions is compared using the X-59 stabilator sample case. In most of the sample load cases, static deformations give a better correlation with the target deformation than do mode shapes. Wing shape sensing with sparse strain data are also demonstrated in this study using the X-59 aircraft. Predicted structural deformations match reasonably with the target deformations, even without strain gauges on some structural components. The predicted deformations have a good match with the target deformations.

Coating permits use of strain gage in water and liquid hydrogen

Strain gage installation covered with a three-layer coating of commercial materials makes measurements in water and liquid hydrogen. It consists of a selected foil strain gage bonded with a modified commercial heat-curring epoxy cement. The outer protective layer of the gage installation may develop cracks when immersed in liquid hydrogen.

Temperature controlled strain gaged extensometer

Temperature controlled strain-gaged extensometer measures longitudinal and girth deflections of pressure vessels in excess of one percent strain during pressurization and depressurization with cryogenic fluids at cryogenic temperatures. The device is of beryllium-copper strips.

Design of a strain-gage probe

Strain-gage spacer probe uses the deflection of a leaf spring to measure strain in a long, slender beam nondestructively. The selected gage is of the smallest practical size, as thin as possible and yet of a standard type.

Inorganic bonding of semiconductor strain gages

Inorganic bonding materials minimize outgassing and improve electrical and mechanical properties of semiconductor strain-gage transducers in high-vacuum and high-temperature operations. The two basic methods described are ceramic-glass-bonding and metallic bond formation between the strain gage and the substrate.

Strain gage installation manual

Detailed specifications for installing laboratory strain gages are compiled into handy reference manual that provides laboratory technicians with ready source of instructions on techniques and procedures for cementing a wide variety of strain gages onto most of the commonly encountered engineering materials.

Electronic strain-level counter

Counter for aircraft counts and records number of times the strain at a point in a structural member exceeds each of four preset levels. Counter uses 28 volt dc power supply, metallic resistance strain gage bridge as sensor, integrated and solid state circuits for signal processing, and electromechanical counters for data storage and readout.
