Enhancing Reliability of Classified Shipments Between the Nuclear Security Enterprise

The extent of this project, as related to by the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE), is related to the current shipping and logistical issues and optimization opportunities between several different NSE sites that are the basis of the enterprise. This current scope is part of every site’s, described as Design Agency (DA) and Production Agency (PA), normal operation to meet the needs and mission of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). The NSE has a broad mission scope encompassing several differing DA and PA sites to meet the NNSA’s mission. These sites require frequent interaction and shipments of material and items between one another in order to meet the mission needs of the enterprise. Currently, there is no methodology that integrates schedules, standards, orders, processes, and best practices to optimize transfers between the differing sites. A centralized location and standard shipping process will optimize and improve the systems behavior, reducing lag time and increasing throughput at sites today. Ultimately this project proposes a central logistical platform, tiered escalation process, and standardized shipping forms to reduce taxpayer costs to meet the NSE’s mission more efficiently. This increase in processing logistics and process accuracy of shipments will save the NSE, not only from a monetary value, but it will reduce the frustrations of individuals working these outdated and over processed systems to improve their quality of life.

Water Cycle-Driven Infectious Diseases as Multiscale, Reliable, Continuously Updating Water Cycle Sensors

We propose a novel synthesis of observational and simulated data (climatological and biological) to enhance understanding of the real-world interplay between climate (here, the water cycle) and the epidemiology of water cycle-driven infectious disease. Aligning with Focal Area 2, predictive modeling using AI techniques, we will develop systems of hierarchical models to discover latent features of the water cycle. Our approach will leverage state-of-the-art in Artificial Intelligence (AI) to measure the degree to which climate change-driven shifts in water cycle can be predicted by supplementing sparse and irregular climate data with water cycle-driven infectious disease resources.

The Argon Power Cycle, a zero emission, flexible and reliable power generation technology

The proposed project was aimed at assisting in the development of the Argon Power Cycle (APC), a zero emission, flexible, and efficient power generation technology. In the effort of bringing the APC to the market, NTS proposed in the scope of this project several partial but key activities to advance the development of the APC. These tasks encompassed 1) the analysis of the market, developing a techno-economic model with integrated market inputs, 2) further optimization of our chemical kinetics models for more accurate simulation of the process and 3) scale up of our original prototype to a larger, commercially viable platform. NTS expanded on this scope of work to secure additional R&D funding in amounts north of $7M, carry out customer discovery with the sponsorship of the NSF and grow the team’s engineering talent.

Development of Integrated Safety and Security Models for Comprehensive Reliability and Resiliency Evaluation

The security of the electric grid and supporting energy systems is crucial to national security. One of the complexities in analyzing the security of energy systems is the safety consequences that may result from accidents. For energy systems, the goal is to ensure that they operate as intended and that any consequences are mitigated or prevented. The integration of safety and security is paramount to protecting these systems from attacks and ensuring that large consequences are prevented. This report describes an integrated safety and security methodology to evaluate cybersecurity events that can lead to large consequences. This novel approach first describes how Systems-Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA) provides a digital causal analysis for Bayesian Networks (BNs). The use of STPA causal analysis provides a systematic approach to constructing BNs that adequately model cyber scenarios that result in consequences. When combined with the technical principles described in Risk-Informed Management of Enterprise Systems (RIMES), a comprehensive risk-informed cybersecurity analysis results that allows decision-makers to prioritize systems that most impact risk.

Developing Accelerated Test Protocols and Tuning Microstructures of the Common Materials to Improve Robustness, Reliability, and Endurance of SOFC Cells

This work is built on our prior work where we found that phase transformation in praseodymium nickelates, e.g. Pr 2 NiO 4 (PNO) and (Pr 1-x Nd x ) 2 NiO 4 (PNNO), can be electrochemically driven, and is substantially faster when compared to thermal annealing studies. The first task aims at an attempt to further accelerate the phase transformation in the oxygen electrode by alternating the current input in the cells, which lead to the development of accelerated test protocols (ATPs). ATPs showed up to 60x faster phase transformation and up to 10x faster performance degradation in (Pr 0.50 Nd 0.50 ) 2 NiO 4 electrodes, when compared to long-term operation under constant current density. Furthermore, the phase stable Nd 2 NiO 4 and (La 0.6 Sr 0.4 )(Co 0.8 Fe 0.2 )O 3 (LSCF6482) electrodes were tested in full cells under ATPs, and showed up to 10x faster performance degradation within 1,100 hours in a comparison with long-term thermal annealing studies and electrochemical operation under constant current density. The second task aims at the quantification of the contributions of cell components to the total impedance of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and distribution of relaxation times (DRT). Specifically, the role of gas composition at both anode and cathode was systematically studied, aiming at deconvoluting, identifying and quantifying the contributions of different electrode processes. This was achieved by first tuning the partial pressure of H 2 at the anode and subsequently varying the partial pressure of O 2 at the cathode. The results suggest that, while DRT offers a viable way of deconvoluting different times distributions, additional attention is needed before assigning a peak to a specific electrode process due to the significant overlap of the contributions from the cathode and the anode. Density function theory studies show that both Pr-vacancies and O-defects play a key role on the activity and stability for nickelates towards oxygen reduction reaction. The resident O-interstitials and oxygen ions in the PrO layer form peroxide (O 2 2- ) nearby Pr vacancies. The O 2 2- limits oxygen-ion transport due to the required additional energy to break its O-O bond. We further calculated the formation and segregation energies for different Ln ions (La, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, and Ho) in PNO and CeO 2 (111) surfaces. In addition to Nd, Pm and La are suggested as potential dopants in PNO to enhance it stability without decomposition due to their more negative formation energies, lower diffusion energies, and positive separation energies.

Transient Efficiency Flexibility and Reliability Optimization of Coal-Fired Power Plants: Model-Predictive Control Library Development (Report)

This document pertains to the reporting requirements of DOE contract FE-0031767. The document covers the development of a model predictive control (MPC) library for implementing MPC for a general dynamic system. The library is implemented in a standardized manner in Matlab/Simulink, where core functions on model prediction, linearization and formulation and solution of a quadratic programming (QP) optimization problem is done in the core library - independent of the specific application. The user can provide the application-specific dynamic model in continuous and discrete time, to rapidly implement and test the MPC performance in a desktop simulation. The MPC optimization objective and constraints are also easily configured via an Excel file to allow iterative refinement as needed. Finally, the MPC library enables a rapid deployment to a target environment through auto C-code generation and containerization. The MPC library works seamlessly with the model based estimation (MBE) library to obtain the overall output feedback control solution. In this program, the reduced order model (ROM) of a coal-fired power plant (CFPP) is used to implement and test the MPC solution.
