A remotely controlled orbiting retriever

A preliminary design effort was recently carried out to investigate methods of removing a certain class of space objects from Shuttle type orbits. Specifically, expired satellites, upper stages, and other objects of potential danger to the Shuttle are the targets of the study. The Trash Remover and Satellite Hauler (TRASH-1) design effort was broken into several disciplines: mission analysis, systems engineering, dynamics and control, power, thermal, and propulsion. A basic requirements is that TRASH-1 go up in the Shuttle. It must be reusable and capable of disposing of more than one item per mission for cost effectiveness. These requirements imply TRASH-1 should use current technology, be modular in design, and be relatively maneuverable. In order to maximize utility, it should be able to both capture and deorbit objects. The design was a basic bus with attachable modules which can either capture or deorbit, depending on the module.

High-Latitude Communications Satellite (HILACS)

The Naval Postgraduate School in the AE 4871 Advanced Spacecraft Design course designed a communications satellite (HILACS) that will provide a continuous UHF communications link between stations located north of the region covered by geosynchronous communications satellites. The communications payload will operate only for that portion of the orbit necessary to provide specific coverage. The satellite orbit is elliptic with perigee at 1204 km in the Southern Hemisphere and an apogee at 14,930 km with 63.4 degrees inclination. Analysis and design of each of the subsystems was done to the extent possible within the constraints of an eleven week quarter and the design and analysis tools available. Work was completed in orbital analysis, the reaction control system, attitude control subsystem, electric power subsystem, telemetry, tracking, and control, thermal control subsystem, and the structures subsystem. The design team consisted of 12 students. Additional support was provided by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the Naval Research Laboratory.

Preliminary plan for a Shuttle Coherent Atmospheric Lidar Experiment (SCALE)

A study has been completed to define a Shuttle experiment that solves the most crucial scientific and engineering problems involved in building a satellite Doppler wind profiler for making global wind measurements. The study includes: (1) a laser study to determine the feasibility of using the existing NOAA Windvan laser in the Space Shuttle spacecraft; (2) a preliminary optics and telescope design; (3) an accommodations study including power, weight, thermal, and control system requirements; and (4) a flight trajectory and operations plan designed to accomplish the required scientific and engineering goals. The experiment will provide much-needed data on the global distribution of atmospheric aerosols and demonstrate the technique of making wind measurements from space, including scanning the laser beam and interpreting the data. Engineering accomplishments will include space qualification of the laser, development of signal processing and lag angle compensation hardware and software, and telescope and optics design. All of the results of this limited Spacelab experiment will be directly applicable to a complete satellite wind profiler for the Earth Observation System/Space Station or other free-flying satellite.

Cognitive engineering models: A prerequisite to the design of human-computer interaction in complex dynamic systems

This chapter examines a class of human-computer interaction applications, specifically the design of human-computer interaction for the operators of complex systems. Such systems include space systems (e.g., manned systems such as the Shuttle or space station, and unmanned systems such as NASA scientific satellites), aviation systems (e.g., the flight deck of 'glass cockpit' airplanes or air traffic control) and industrial systems (e.g., power plants, telephone networks, and sophisticated, e.g., 'lights out,' manufacturing facilities). The main body of human-computer interaction (HCI) research complements but does not directly address the primary issues involved in human-computer interaction design for operators of complex systems. Interfaces to complex systems are somewhat special. The 'user' in such systems - i.e., the human operator responsible for safe and effective system operation - is highly skilled, someone who in human-machine systems engineering is sometimes characterized as 'well trained, well motivated'. The 'job' or task context is paramount and, thus, human-computer interaction is subordinate to human job interaction. The design of human interaction with complex systems, i.e., the design of human job interaction, is sometimes called cognitive engineering.

Development of visual 3D virtual environment for control software

Virtual environments for software visualization may enable complex programs to be created and maintained. A typical application might be for control of regional electric power systems. As these encompass broader computer networks than ever, construction of such systems becomes very difficult. Conventional text-oriented environments are useful in programming individual processors. However, they are obviously insufficient to program a large and complicated system, that includes large numbers of computers connected to each other; such programming is called 'programming in the large.' As a solution for this problem, the authors are developing a graphic programming environment wherein one can visualize complicated software in virtual 3D world. One of the major features of the environment is the 3D representation of concurrent process. 3D representation is used to supply both network-wide interprocess programming capability (capability for 'programming in the large') and real-time programming capability. The authors' idea is to fuse both the block diagram (which is useful to check relationship among large number of processes or processors) and the time chart (which is useful to check precise timing for synchronization) into a single 3D space. The 3D representation gives us a capability for direct and intuitive planning or understanding of complicated relationship among many concurrent processes. To realize the 3D representation, a technology to enable easy handling of virtual 3D object is a definite necessity. Using a stereo display system and a gesture input device (VPL DataGlove), our prototype of the virtual workstation has been implemented. The workstation can supply the 'sensation' of the virtual 3D space to a programmer. Software for the 3D programming environment is implemented on the workstation. According to preliminary assessments, a 50 percent reduction of programming effort is achieved by using the virtual 3D environment. The authors expect that the 3D environment has considerable potential in the field of software engineering.
