Solid state laser systems for space application

Since the last report several things have happened to effect the research effort. In laser metrology, measurements using Michelson type interferometers with an FM modulated diode laser source have been performed. The discrete Fourier transform technique has been implemented. Problems associated with this technique as well as the overall FM scheme were identified. The accuracy of the technique is not at the level we would expect at this point. We are now investigating the effect of various types of noise on the accuracy as well as making changes to the system. One problem can be addressed by modifying the original optical layout. Our research effort was also expanded to include the assembly and testing of a diode pumped\Nd:YAG laser pumped\Ti sapphire laser for possible use in sounding rocket applications. At this stage, the diode pumped Nd:YAG laser has been assembled and made operational.

Electroformed Nickel Mirrors for the Next Generation Space Telescope

This paper summarizes the work to date on a novel mirror fabrication technique being developed at the Marshall Space Flight Center for potential use on the Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST). This technique involves forming an extremely lightweight mirror by electroplating nickel and nickel based alloys onto a highly polished precision mandrel. The resulting mirror shell can then be backed up with or attached to a lightweight structure to produce a mirror element that is on the order of 15 kg/sq m areal density. Since the mirrors are fabricated from a mandrel (or master), subsequent mirrors can be made with very high economy; this technique is particularly suited to segmented mirrors schemes whereby large apertures are achieved through the deployment of smaller segments. Control of the electroplating process is the key element for producing high quality optics; bath chemistry and real time control of the plating current density yields uniform grained electroforms with zero residual stress. To accomplish this, a special electronic sensor was developed whereby the residual stress can be monitored as the nickel is electrolytically deposited. This information is used in a feedback loop to modulate current density which, in turn, directly governs the residual stress. Details pertaining to this and other aspects of the fabrication of a half meter mirror will be published along with test results and metrology data.

High Speed Interferometry for James Webb Space Telescope Testing

High speed interferometry (HSI) was one of the enabling technologies to the successful development and testing of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) optical system that consists of a 6.5 meter diameter, segmented, lightweight primary mirror and lightweight carbon fiber composite structure. This paper reviews the interferometry that was used first to demonstrate that the lightweight mirror and lightweight composite structure technologies were ready for JWST and later to verify performance of the fully assembled primary mirror and the telescope at cryogenic temperature. The tools and techniques developed for JWST are being advanced to benefit future missions that require stable mirrors, precision metering structures, active controls and diagnostic metrology.

Multilayer Active Shell Mirrors for Space Telescopes

A novel active mirror technology based on carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) substrates and replication techniques has been developed. Multiple additional layers are implemented into the design serving various functions. Nanolaminate metal films are used to provide a high quality reflective front surface. A backing layer of thin active material is implemented to provide the surface-parallel actuation scheme. Printed electronics are used to create a custom electrode pattern and flexible routing layer. Mirrors of this design are thin (< 1.0 mm), lightweight (2.7 kg/m2 ), and have large actuation capabilities. These capabilities, along with the associated manufacturing processes, represent a significant change in design compared to traditional optics. Such mirrors could be used as lightweight primaries for small CubeSat-based telescopes or as meter-class segments for future large aperture observatories. Multiple mirrors can be produced under identical conditions enabling a substantial reduction in manufacturing cost and complexity. An overview of the mirror design and manufacturing processes is presented. Predictions on the actuation performance have been made through finite element simulations demonstrating correct abilities on the order of 250−300× for astigmatic modes with only 41 independent actuators. A description of the custom metrology system used to characterize the active mirrors is also presented. The system is based on a Reverse Hartmann test and can accommodate extremely large deviations in mirror figure (> 100 µm PV) down to sub-micron precision. The system has been validated against several traditional techniques including photogrammetry and interferometry. The mirror performance has been characterized using this system, as well as closed-loop figure correction experiments on 150 mm dia. prototypes. The mirrors have demonstrated post-correction figure accuracies of 200 nm RMS (two dead actuators limiting performance).

Manufacturability-based optical design optimization for advanced Kirkpatrick–Baez X-ray focusing mirrors

The advanced Kirkpatrick–Baez (AKB) mirror setup is an effective and compelling solution to provide stable X-ray nano-focusing for synchrotron radiation or free-electron laser beamlines. We propose an AKB mirror design optimization approach to mitigate the difficulties associated with mirror fabrication by minimizing the total slope ranges of the four curved mirrors while achieving the expected focusing performance. In the optimization, we have considered geometry constraints to ensure the beam acceptance with the required clear aperture, the diffraction-limited focal size with the adequate numerical aperture, and the desired mirror gaps for adjustment and the necessary working distance for the sample stage. Additionally, practical constraints linked to mirror metrology and fabrication, such as mirror length limits and curvature uncertainty in measurement, are taken into account. Furthermore, progressive objective optimization eliminates the need for any initial guess, fully automating the AKB optimization process. This approach facilitates the development of an elegant Wolter-I or Wolter-III type AKB design solution that satisfies these multiple constraints. In cases where constraints cannot be simultaneously satisfied, the optimization results provide valuable insights into areas where trade-offs need to be considered. Simulations with ray tracing and wavefront propagation validate the optimized AKB design showing high tolerance to the beam incident angle.

The LUVOIR Extreme Coronagraph for Living Planetary Systems (ECLIPS) II. Performance Evaluation, Aberration Sensitivity Analysis and Exoplanet Detection Simulations

Future space missions such as the Large UV-Optical-Infrared Surveyor (LUVOIR) and the Habitable Exoplanet Observatory (HabEx) require coronagraphs with active wavefront control to suppress starlight to discover and characterize habitable exoplanets. The Extreme Coronagraph for Living Planetary Systems (ECLIPS) is the coronagraph instrument on the LUVOIR Surveyor mission concept, an 8–15m segmented telescope. ECLIPS is split into three channels: UV (200 to 400 nm), optical (400 nm to 850 nm), and NIR (850 nm to 2.0 microns), with each channel equipped with two deformable mirrors for wavefront control, a suite of coronagraph masks, a low-order/out-of-band wavefront sensor, and separate science imagers and spectrographs. The Apodized Pupil Lyot Coronagraph (APLC) and the Vector Vortex Coronagraph (VVC) are the baselined mask technologies for ECLIPS to enable the required 10 -10 contrast for observations in the habitable zones of nearby stars. Their performance depends on active wavefront sensing and control, as well as metrology subsystems to compensate for aberrations induced by segment errors (piston and tip/tilt, among others), secondary mirror misalignment, and global low-order wavefront errors. Here we present the latest results of the simulation of these effects for the two technologies and discuss the achieved contrast for exoplanet detection and characterization after closed-loop wavefront estimation and control algorithms have been applied. Finally, we show simulated observations using high-fidelity spatial and spectral input models of complete planetary systems generated with the Haystacks code framework.

Quantum Metrology of Noisy Spreading Channels

We provide the optimal measurement strategy for a class of noisy channels that reduce to the identity channel for a specific value of a parameter (spreading channels). We provide an example that is physically relevant: the estimation of the absolute value of the displacement in the presence of phase randomizing noise. Surprisingly, this noise does not affect the effectiveness of the optimal measurement. We show that, for small displacement, a squeezed vacuum probe field is optimal among strategies with same average energy. A squeezer followed by photodetection is the optimal detection strategy that attains the quantum Fisher information, whereas the customarily used homodyne detection becomes useless in the limit of small displacements, due to the same effect that gives Rayleigh’s curse in optical superresolution. There is a quantum advantage: a squeezed or a Fock state with N average photons allow to asymptotically estimate the parameter with a N better precision than classical states with same energy.

Assessment of wafer scale MoS 2 atomic layers grown by metal–organic chemical vapor deposition using organo-metal, organo-sulfide, and H 2 S precursors

Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDs) are a unique class of materials that exhibit attractive electrical and optical properties which have generated significant interest for applications in microelectronics, optoelectronics, energy storage, and sensing. Considering the potential of these materials to impact such applications, it is crucial to develop a reliable and scalable synthesis process that is compatible with modern industrial manufacturing methods. Metal–organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) offers an ideal solution to produce TMDs, due to its compatibility with large-scale production, precise layer control, and high material purity. Optimization of MOCVD protocols is necessary for effective TMD synthesis and integration into mainstream technologies. Additionally, improvements in metrology are necessary to measure the quality of the fabricated samples more accurately. In this work, we study MOCVD of wafer-scale molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) utilizing two common chalcogen precursors, H 2 S and DTBS. We then develop a metrology platform for wafer scale samples quality assessment. For this, the coalesced films were characterized using Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Kelvin probe force microscopy. We then correlate the structural analysis of these grown films with electrical performance by using aerosol jet printing to fabricate van der Pauw test structures and assess sheet resistance.

Figure Measurements of High-Energy-X-Ray Replicated Optics

We are developing grazing incidence x-ray optics for a balloon-borne hard-x-ray telescope (HERO). The HERO mirror shells are fabricated using electroform-nickel replication off super-polished cylindrical mandrels. One of the sources for mirror resolution error is departure of the shell figure from prescription. We have modified a Vertical-scan Long Trace Profilometer (VLTP) in order to measure the figure of the inner surface of the HERO mirror shells for diameters as small as 76 mm. Mirror alignment method and sources for systematic errors will be discussed. Comparison of figure metrology of the mandrel and the shells will be presented together with results from x-ray tests.

The James Webb Space Telescope

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a 6.6m diameter, segmented, deployable telescope for cryogenic IR space astronomy (approx.40K). The JWST Observatory architecture includes the Optical Telescope Element and the Integrated Science Instrument Module (ISIM) element that contains four science instruments (SI) including a Guider. The ISIM optical metering structure is a roughly 2.2x1.7x2.2mY, asymmetric frame that is composed of carbon fiber and resin tubes bonded to invar end fittings and composite gussets and clips. The structure supports the SIs, isolates the SIs from the OTE, and supports thermal and electrical subsystems. The structure is attached to the OTE structure via strut-like kinematic mounts. The ISM structure must meet its requirements at the approx.40K cryogenic operating temperature. The SIs are aligned to the structure s coordinate system under ambient, clean room conditions using laser tracker and theodolite metrology. The ISM structure is thermally cycled for stress relief and in order to measure temperature-induced mechanical, structural changes. These ambient-to-cryogenic changes in the alignment of SI and OTE-related interfaces are an important component in the JWST Observatory alignment plan and must be verified.

Grazing Incidence Optics Technology

This project is to demonstrate the capability to directly fabricate lightweight, high-resolution, grazing-incidence x-ray optics using a commercially available robotic polishing machine. Typical x-ray optics production at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) uses a replication process in which metal mirrors are electroformed on to figured and polished mandrels from which they are later removed. The attraction of this process is that multiple copies can be made from a single master. The drawback is that the replication process limits the angular resolution that can be attained. By directly fabricating each shell, errors inherent in the replication process are removed. The principal challenge now becomes how to support the mirror shell during all aspects of fabrication, including the necessary metrology to converge on the required mirror performance specifications. This program makes use of a Zeeko seven-axis computer-controlled polishing machine (see fig. 1) and supporting fabrication, metrology, and test equipment at MSFC. The overall development plan calls for proof-of-concept demonstration with relatively thick mirror shells (5-6 mm, fig. 2) which are straightforward to support and then a transition to much thinner shells (2-3 mm), which are an order of magnitude thinner than those used for Chandra. Both glass and metal substrates are being investigated. Currently, a thick glass shell is being figured. This has enabled experience to be gained with programming and operating the polishing machine without worrying about shell distortions or breakage. It has also allowed time for more complex support mechanisms for figuring/ polishing and metrology to be designed for the more challenging thinner shells. These are now in fabrication. Toward the fabrication of a 5 μm resolution Wolter microscope for the National Ignition Facility

Advancements in computer-controlled polishing, metrology, and replication have led to a x-ray mirror fabrication process that is capable of producing high-resolution Wolter microscopes. The mirror is a nickel-cobalt replicated full-shell mirror that was electroformed from a finely figured and polished mandrel. This mandrel was designed and fabricated for a 8 m source-to-detector distance microscope, with 10× magnification. A computer controlled polishing process corrected the low-frequency mandrel figure to < 2.0 nm RMS error. The mandrel design was optimized to reduce shell distortions that occur mainly < 20 mm from the shell ends. This design, in combination with improved replication tooling design and refined bath parameters informed by a detailed COMSOL model, have led to reductions in replication errors in the mirror shell. X-ray tests performed on a pair of mirror shells replicated from the mandrel have demonstrated < 10 μm FWHM source plane imaging resolution. Here we discuss the development process, highlight results from metrology and x-ray testing, and define a path for achieving 5 μm FWHM resolution.

PACE OCI Short-Wave Infrared Detection Assembly frequency-dependent linearity characterization and uncertainty analysis

The Ocean Color Instrument (OCI), the primary payload of the Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem (PACE)observatory, will collect data to monitor the health of Earth’s oceans and atmosphere. The Short-Wave Infrared(SWIR) Detection Assembly (SDA) was built and characterized by the Utah State University Space DynamicsLaboratory (SDL) and is a subsystem of OCI. The SDA measures seven bands centered at 940, 1038, 1250, 1378,1615, 2130, and 2260 nm, with standard- and high-gain varieties for the 1250 and 1615 nm bands, resulting in nine total detection configurations in the SWIR. The delivery of high-quality science data is critically dependent upon accurately characterizing the linearity of the SDA. Two metrology techniques were employed to measure the linearity and characterize the frequency-dependent linearity uncertainty of the system. The first technique used superposition linearity measurements to determine the DC linearity, and the second technique involved an oscillating small-signal response at seven frequencies to determine the frequency-dependent linearity. Discrepancies between the DC and frequency-dependent linearities constrain the uncertainty between the two. Examining the difference between these two methods for all SDA channels, we find most channels experience an uncertainty below0.2% with a worst-case measurement uncertainty of 0.31%. Averaging SDA channels with similar detectors, optical filters, and electronics to simulate the flight-like data products yields a worst-case frequency-dependence linearity uncertainty of 0.12%, demonstrating minimal frequency dependence, implying an excellent linearity knowledge.Detailed performance knowledge, including linearity performance, verifies data quality and builds confidence in the success of the PACE mission.

Binary pseudo-random array for calibration of interferometers with transmission spheres and cylinders

Binary pseudo-random array (BPRA) “white noise” artifacts are highly effective for characterizing the instrument transfer function (ITF) of surface topography metrology tools and wavefront measurement instruments. These BPRA artifacts feature all spatial frequencies within the instrument bandpass equally, resulting in a power spectral density with a white-noise-like character. This characteristic allows for direct ITF determination with uniform sensitivity across the entire spatial frequency range. We have developed a novel BPRA calibration standard that combines the diffractive pattern of a reflection computer-generated hologram (CGH) with the white noise generating BPRA pattern. By integrating these technologies using the same lithographic techniques, the resulting calibration sample enables ITF characterization of a Fizeau interferometer with a transmission sphere, or any nulling optic.

Quantitative Infrared-to-Terahertz Nanospectroscopy of Semiconductors

Semiconductor technology now employs few-nanometer features, necessitating tools probing electronic properties on the same length scale. While the concentration of free charge carriers is routinely measured, the scattering rate remains challenging to access at the nanoscale. Here, we present ultrabroadband (5–50 THz) synchrotron infrared nanospectroscopy as a quantitative metrology tool for semiconductors. This technique can determine both the charge carrier concentration and scattering rate with percent-level accuracy, and it is inherently capable of ∼10 nm spatial resolution. We study silicon with different doping levels and confirm the method’s accuracy by statistical analysis and comparison with established far-field infrared spectroscopy. Near-field measurements systematically reveal charge-carrier concentrations ∼30% lower than far-field values, consistent with increased surface sensitivity and surface depletion. Our work establishes synchrotron infrared nanospectroscopy as a precise tool for quantitative nanoscale semiconductor characterization and paves the way toward all-optical characterization of surface depletion effects.

Hearing carrier-envelope offset frequency and phase in air with a microphone

Attosecond science and frequency metrology rely on the precise measurement and control of the laser pulse waveform, a feat traditionally achieved using optoelectronic techniques. In this study, we conducted a laser-induced acoustic experiment in air ionized by carrier-envelope phase (CEP)-stabilized sub-4 fs pulses. Our results reveal that the acoustic signal exhibits CEP dependence in few-cycle pulses, primarily through amplitude modulation from laser-driven ionization. This optoacoustic phenomenon is, to the best of our knowledge, a novel phenomenon that enables not only the measurement of the carrier-envelope offset frequency but also the direct characterization of the waveform of optical pulses through a microphone. Our study highlights the potential of laser-induced acoustic waves for advancing ultrafast science.
