Donor doping of corundum (Al x Ga 1- x ) 2 O 3

We report corundum (Al x Ga 1-x ) 2 O 3 alloys have been proposed as a candidate ultrawide-bandgap oxide for a number of applications, but doping is unexplored. We examine the prospects for n-type doping with H, Si, Ge, Sn, Hf, Zr, and Ta in corundum (Al x Ga 1-x ) 2 O 3 alloys using first-principles calculations. All of the dopants are shallow donors in corundum Ga 2 O 3 . In the (Al x Ga 1-x ) 2 O 3 alloy, they transition from shallow to deep donors at Al compositions that are unique to each donor. Si and Hf remain shallow donors up to the highest Al contents in corundum (Al x Ga 1-x ) 2 O 3 alloys and are still shallow even as the (Al x Ga 1-x ) 2 O 3 bandgap exceeds 6.5 eV. Finally, we address the detrimental role of cation vacancies as compensating deep acceptors and suggest that doping in a hydrogen-rich environment under cation-rich conditions can be used to overcome this problem.

Enhancing the electron mobility in Si-doped (010) β-Ga 2 O 3 films with low-temperature buffer layers

We demonstrate a new substrate cleaning and buffer growth scheme in β-Ga 2 O 3 epitaxial thin films using metal–organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE). For the channel structure, a low-temperature (LT, 600 °C) un-doped Ga 2 O 3 buffer was grown, followed by a transition layer to a high-temperature (HT, 810 °C) Si-doped Ga 2 O 3 channel layers without growth interruption. The (010) Ga 2 O 3 Fe-doped substrate cleaning uses solvent cleaning, followed by additional hydrofluoric acid (49% in water) treatment for 30 min before the epilayer growth. This step is shown to compensate the parasitic Si channel at the epilayer–substrate interface that originates from the substrate polishing process or contamination from the ambient. From secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) analysis, the Si peak atomic density at the substrate interface is found to be several times lower than the Fe atomic density in the substrate—indicating full compensation. The elimination of the parasitic electron channel at the epi–substrate interface was also verified by electrical (capacitance–voltage profiling) measurements. In the LT-grown (600 °C) buffer layers, it is seen that the Fe forward decay tail from the substrate is very sharp, with a decay rate of ∼9 nm/dec. X-ray off-axis rocking curve ω-scans show very narrow full width at half maximum (FWHM) values, similar to the as-received substrates. These channels show record high electron mobility in the range of 196–85 cm 2 /V⋅s in unintentionally doped and Si-doped films in the doping range of 2 × 10 16 –1 × 10 20 cm −3 . Si delta-doped channels were also grown utilizing this substrate cleaning and the hybrid LT buffers. Record high electron Hall mobility of 110 cm 2 /V⋅s was measured for sheet charge density of 9.2 × 10 12 cm −2 . This substrate cleaning, combined with the LT buffer scheme, shows the potential of designing Si-doped β-Ga 2 O 3 channels with exceptional transport properties for high-performance Ga 2 O 3 -based electron devices.

Young’s modulus of V 3 O 5 thin films

Vanadium oxide V 3 O 5 exhibits an insulator-to-metal transition (IMT) near 430 K, which is the highest value for all vanadium oxides exhibiting IMTs. This makes it interesting for advanced electronic applications. However, the properties of V 3 O 5 have been little studied, and, in particular, there are no reports of experimentally determined mechanical properties. In this work, Young’s modulus of sputter-deposited V 3 O 5 thin films has been determined by measuring the fundamental resonant frequency of V 3 O 5 -coated silicon microcantilevers using a laser beam deflection technique. After deposition, the films were characterized by x-ray diffraction, resistivity measurements, and atomic force microscopy. The value of Young’s modulus experimentally determined for V 3 O 5 was 198 ± 14 GPa, which is slightly lower than the computationally derived values for bulk crystal V 3 O 5 .

Identification and characterization of deep nitrogen acceptors in β-Ga 2 O 3 using defect spectroscopies

The ability to achieve highly resistive beta-phase gallium oxide (β-Ga 2 O 3 ) layers and substrates is critical for β-Ga 2 O 3 high voltage and RF devices. To date, the most common approach involves doping with iron (Fe), which generates a moderately deep acceptor-like defect state located at E C -0.8 eV in the β-Ga 2 O 3 bandgap. Recently, there has been growing interest in alternative acceptors, such as magnesium (Mg) and nitrogen (N), due to their predicted deeper energy levels, which could avoid inadvertent charge modulation during device operation. In this work, a systematic study that makes direct correlations between the introduction of N using ion implantation and the observation of a newly observed deep level at E C -2.9 eV detected by deep-level optical spectroscopy (DLOS) is presented. The concentration of this state displayed a monotonic dependence with N concentration over a range of implant conditions, as confirmed by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). With a near 1:1 match in absolute N and E C -2.9 eV trap concentrations from SIMS and DLOS, respectively, which also matched the measured removal of free electrons from capacitance-voltage studies, this indicates that N contributes a very efficiently incorporated compensating defect. Density functional theory calculations confirm the assignment of this state to be an N (0/-1) acceptor with a configuration of N occupying the oxygen site III [N O(III) ]. The near ideal efficiency for this state to compensate free electrons and its location toward the midgap region of the β-Ga 2 O 3 bandgap demonstrates the potential of N doping as a promising approach for producing semi-insulating β-Ga 2 O 3 .

Studies on the structure and the magnetic properties of high-entropy spinel oxide (MgMnFeCoNi)Al 2 O 4

The study of high-entropy materials has attracted enormous interest since they could show new functional properties that are not observed in their related parent phases. Here, we report single crystal growth, structure, thermal transport, and magnetic property studies on a novel high-entropy oxide with the spinel structure (MgMnFeCoNi)Al 2 O 4 . We have successfully grown high-quality single crystals of this high-entropy oxide using the optical floating zone growth technique for the first time. The sample was confirmed to be a phase pure high-entropy oxide using x-ray diffraction and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. Through magnetization measurements, we found (MgMnFeCoNi)Al 2 O 4 exhibits a cluster spin glass state, though the parent phases show either antiferromagnetic ordering or spin glass states. Furthermore, we also found that (MgMnFeCoNi)Al 2 O 4 has much greater thermal expansion than its CoAl 2 O 4 parent compound using high resolution neutron Larmor diffraction. We further investigated the structure of this high-entropy material via Raman spectroscopy and extended x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS) measurements. From Raman spectroscopy measurements, we observed (MgMnFeCoNi)Al 2 O 4 to display a combination of the active Raman modes in its parent compounds with the modes shifted and significantly broadened. This result, together with the varying bond lengths probed by EXAFS, reveals severe local lattice distortions in this high-entropy phase. Additionally, we found a substantial decrease in thermal conductivity and suppression of the low temperature thermal conductivity peak in (MgMnFeCoNi)Al 2 O 4 , consistent with the increased lattice defects and strain. These findings advance the understanding of the dependence of thermal expansion and transport on the lattice distortions in high-entropy materials.

High field dielectric response in κ-Ga 2 O 3 films

κ-Ga 2 O 3 has been predicted to be a potential ferroelectric material. In this work, undoped Ga 2 O 3 films were grown by either plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD) or metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) on platinized sapphire substrates. 50 nm thick PEALD films with a mixture of κ-Ga 2 O 3 and β-Ga 2 O 3 had a relative permittivity of ~27, a loss tangent below 2%, and high electrical resistivity up to ~1.5 MV/cm. 700 nm thick MOCVD films with predominantly the κ-Ga 2 O 3 phase had relative permittivities of ~18 and a loss tangent of 1% at 10 kHz. Neither film showed compelling evidence for ferroelectricity measured at fields up to 1.5 MV/cm, even after hundreds of cycles. Here, piezoresponse force microscopy measurements on bare κ-Ga 2 O 3 showed a finite piezoelectric response that could not be reoriented for electric fields up to 1.33 MV/cm.

Cation reordering instead of phase transitions: Origins and implications of contrasting lithiation mechanisms in 1D ζ- and 2D α-V 2 O 5

Substantial improvements in cycle life, rate performance, accessible voltage, and reversible capacity are required to realize the promise of Li-ion batteries in full measure. Here, we have examined insertion electrodes of the same composition (V 2 O 5 ) prepared according to the same electrode specifications and comprising particles with similar dimensions and geometries that differ only in terms of their atomic connectivity and crystal structure, specifically two-dimensional (2D) layered α-V 2 O 5 that crystallizes in an orthorhombic space group and one-dimensional (1D) tunnel-structured ζ-V 2 O 5 crystallized in a monoclinic space group. By using particles of similar dimensions, we have disentangled the role of specific structural motifs and atomistic diffusion pathways in affecting electrochemical performance by mapping the dynamical evolution of lithiation-induced structural modifications using ex situ scanning transmission X-ray microscopy, operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements, and phase-field modeling. We find the operation of sharply divergent mechanisms to accommodate increasing concentrations of Li-ions: a series of distortive phase transformations that result in puckering and expansion of interlayer spacing in layered α-V 2 O 5 , as compared with cation reordering along interstitial sites in tunnel-structured ζ-V 2 O 5 . By alleviating distortive phase transformations, the ζ-V 2 O 5 cathode shows reduced voltage hysteresis, increased Li-ion diffusivity, alleviation of stress gradients, and improved capacity retention. The findings demonstrate that alternative lithiation mechanisms can be accessed in metastable compounds by dint of their reconfigured atomic connectivity and can unlock substantially improved electrochemical performance not accessible in the thermodynamically stable phase.

Is Ba 3 In 2 O 6 a high- T c superconductor?

It has been suggested that Ba 3 In 2 O 6 might be a high-Tc superconductor. Experimental investigation of the properties of Ba 3 In 2 O 6 was long inhibited by its instability in air. Recently epitaxial Ba 3 In 2 O 6 with a protective capping layer was demonstrated, which finally allows its electronic characterization. The optical bandgap of Ba3In2O6 is determined to be 2.99 eV in-the (001) plane and 2.83 eV along the c-axis direction by spectroscopic ellipsometry. First-principles calculations were carried out, yielding a result in good agreement with the experimental value. Various dopants were explored to induce (super-)conductivity in this otherwise insulating material. Neither A- nor B-site doping proved successful. The underlying reason is predominately the formation of oxygen interstitials as revealed by scanning transmission electron microscopy and first-principles calculations. Additional efforts to induce superconductivity were investigated, including surface alkali doping, optical pumping, and hydrogen reduction. To probe liquid-ion gating, Ba 3 In 2 O 6 was successfully grown epitaxially on an epitaxial SrRuO 3 bottom electrode. So far none of these efforts induced superconductivity in Ba 3 In 2 O 6 , leaving the answer to the initial question of whether Ba 3 In 2 O 6 is a high-T c superconductor to be 'no' thus far.

Atomic-scale constituting stable interface for improved LiNi 0.6 Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 O 2 cathodes of lithium-ion batteries

Ascribed to their higher capacity and lower cost compared to conventional LiCoO 2 , the Ni-rich layered LiNi 0.6 Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 O 2 (NMC622) is now considered as one promising cathode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, it still suffers from some evident performance degradation, especially under high cutoff voltages (i.e., >4.3 V versus Li/Li + ). The performance degradation typically is exhibited as capacity fading and voltage drop, mainly originating from an instable interface between the NMC622 and electrolyte as well as the evolution of the NMC structure. To improve the interfacial and structural stability of NMC cathodes, herein we deposited an ultrathin layer of Al 2 O 3 coatings (<5 nm) conformally over NMC622 composite electrodes directly using atomic layer deposition (ALD). It was found that, under different upper cutoff voltages (4.3, 4.5, and 4.7 V), the ALD Al 2 O 3 coatings enable enhanced performance of NMC622 cathodes with better cyclability and higher capacity. Particularly, the beneficial effects of the ALD Al 2 O 3 coatings are more remarkable at higher upper cutoff voltages (4.5 and 4.7 V). Furthermore, the ALD coatings can significantly improve the rate capability of NMC622. To this end, we utilized a suite of characterization tools and performed a series of electrochemical tests to clarify the effects of the ALD Al 2 O 3 coatings. This study revealed that the beneficial effects of the Al 2 O 3 ALD coatings are multiple: (i) serving as an artificial layer of solid electrolyte interphase to mitigate undesirable interfacial reactions; (ii) acting as a physical barrier to inhibit metal dissolution of NMC; and (iii) forming a reinforced networked overcoating to boost the mechanical integrity of NMC cathodes. This study is favorable for designing high-performance NMC cathodes.

Single crystal growth and electronic structure of Rh-doped Sr 3 Ir 2 O 7

Ruddlesden-Popper iridate Sr 3 Ir 2 O 7 is a spin–orbit coupled Mott insulator. Hole doped Sr 3 Ir 2 O 7 provides an ideal platform to study the exotic quantum phenomena that occur near the metal–insulator transition (MIT) region. Rh substitution of Ir is an effective method to induce hole doping into Sr 3 Ir 2 O 7 . However, the highest doping level reported in Sr 3 (Ir 1− x Rh x ) 2 O 7 single crystals was only around 3%, which is far from the MIT region. In this paper, we report the successful growth of single crystals of Sr 3 (Ir 1− x Rh x ) 2 O 7 with a doping level of ~ 9%. The samples have been fully characterized, demonstrating the high quality of the single crystals. Transport measurements have been carried out, confirming the tendency of MIT in these samples. The electronic structure has also been examined by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements. Our results establish a platform to investigate the heavily hole doped Sr 3 Ir 2 O 7 compound, which also provide new insights into the MIT with hole doping in this material system.

The role of radio loudness in Eigenvector 1 and the Baldwin Effect of [O iii ] λ5007

ABSTRACT The radio emission is an important observable of quasars, but its relationship to Eigenvector 1 and the [O iii] λ5007 Baldwin Effect is not fully understood. We explore these issues based on a sample of 1800 quasars taken from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7. We employ a new approach of selecting subsamples in the plane of fundamental physical parameters of the black hole mass and Eddington ratio, so as to reduce variables and complexity in analyses. Based on these subsamples, we investigate the relationship between radio loudness R and Eigenvector 1 and find that radio loudness is correlated with [O iii] λ5007 emission, but has no clear relationship with optical Fe ii emission, which indicates that the radio power is probably not a driver of Eigenvector 1 but merely a secondary process. In addition, we also investigate the impact of radio loudness on the Baldwin Effect of [O iii] λ5007. We find that when the radio loudness is not strong (log R < 2), the Baldwin Effect of [O iii] λ5007 is clear, while in the samples of extreme radio loudness (log R ≥ 2), the Baldwin Effect of [O iii] λ5007 becomes weaker or even disappears. We suggest that both radio loudness and luminosity influence the relative strength of [O iii].

A Group of O-Acetyltransferases Catalyze Xyloglucan Backbone Acetylation and Can Alter Xyloglucan Xylosylation Pattern and Plant Growth When Expressed in Arabidopsis

Abstract Xyloglucan is a major hemicellulose in plant cell walls and exists in two distinct types, XXXG and XXGG. While the XXXG-type xyloglucan from dicot species only contains O-acetyl groups on side-chain galactose (Gal) residues, the XXGG-type xyloglucan from Poaceae (grasses) and Solanaceae bears O-acetyl groups on backbone glucosyl (Glc) residues. Although O-acetyltransferases responsible for xyloglucan Gal acetylation have been characterized, the biochemical mechanism underlying xyloglucan backbone acetylation remains to be elucidated. In this study, we showed that recombinant proteins of a group of DUF231 members from rice and tomato were capable of transferring acetyl groups onto O-6 of Glc residues in cello-oligomer acceptors, indicating that they are xyloglucan backbone 6-O-acetyltransferases (XyBATs). We further demonstrated that XyBAT-acetylated cellohexaose oligomers could be readily xylosylated by AtXXT1 (Arabidopsis xyloglucan xylosyltransferase 1) to generate acetylated, xylosylated cello-oligomers, whereas AtXXT1-xylosylated cellohexaose oligomers were much less effectively acetylated by XyBATs. Heterologous expression of a rice XyBAT in Arabidopsis led to a severe reduction in cell expansion and plant growth and a drastic alteration in xyloglucan xylosylation pattern with the formation of acetylated XXGG-type units, including XGG, XGGG, XXGG, XXGG,XXGGG and XXGGG (G denotes acetylated Glc). In addition, recombinant proteins of two Arabidopsis XyBAT homologs also exhibited O-acetyltransferase activity toward cellohexaose, suggesting their possible role in mediating xyloglucan backbone acetylation in vivo. Our findings provide new insights into the biochemical mechanism underlying xyloglucan backbone acetylation and indicate the importance of maintaining the regular xyloglucan xylosylation pattern in cell wall function.

Crystal structure and thermal expansion of Ta 2 ⁢O 5 from neutron diffraction

Tantalum pentoxide (Ta 2 ⁢O 5 ) is a component of technologies ranging from photographic lenses to medical implants. Despite more than six decades of interest, however, there is no consensus on the crystal structure of Ta 2 ⁢O 5 . Here, we report the results of neutron diffraction experiments on Ta 2⁢ O 5 powders at temperatures up to 1000⁢°⁢C. Because neutron diffraction is sensitive to the positions of O atoms in the presence of heavy elements, our results provide strong evidence that the orthorhombic L SR structure can account for experimental observations better than any other proposal in the literature. Here, we also determine the anisotropic crystallographic thermal expansion parameters of Ta 2 ⁢O 5 , which are important for modeling the performance of Ta 2⁢ O 5 -bearing technologies.

Quantum spin ice response to a magnetic field in the dipole-octupole pyrochlore Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7

The pyrochlore magnet Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 has attracted much attention as a quantum spin ice candidate whose novelty derives in part from the dipolar-octupolar nature of the Ce 3+ pseudospin-1/2 degrees of freedom it possesses. We report heat capacity measurements on single crystal samples of Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 down to T~0.1K in a magnetic field along the [$1,\bar{1},0$] direction. These measurements show that the broad hump in the zero-field heat capacity moves higher in temperature with increasing field strength and is split into two separate humps by the [$1,\bar{1},0$] magnetic field at ~2T. These separate features are due to the decomposition of the pyrochlore lattice into effectively decoupled chains for fields in this direction: One set of chains (α chains) is polarized by the field while the other (β chains) remains free. This situation is similar to that observed in the classical spin ices Ho 2 Ti 2 O 7 and Dy 2 Ti 2 O 7 , but with the twist that here the strong transverse exchange interactions produce substantial quantum effects. Our theoretical modeling suggests that the β chains are close to a critical state, with nearly-gapless excitations. We also report elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements on single crystal Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 in [$1,\bar{1},0$] and [0,0,1] magnetic fields at temperatures down to T=0.03K. The elastic scattering behaves consistently with the formation of independent chains for a [$1,\bar{1},0$] field, while the [0,0,1] field produces a single field-induced elastic magnetic Bragg peak at (0,2,0) and equivalent wavevectors, indicating a polarized spin ice state for fields above ~3T. For both [$1,\bar{1},0$] and [0,0,1] magnetic fields, our inelastic neutron scattering results show an approximately dispersionless continuum of scattering that increases in both energy and intensity with increasing field strength. By modeling the complete set of experimental data using numerical linked cluster and semiclassical molecular dynamics calculations, we demonstrate the dominantly multipolar nature of the exchange interactions in Ce 2 Zr 2 O 7 and the smallness of the parameter θ, which controls the mixing between dipolar and octupolar degrees of freedom. Finally, these results support previous estimates of the microscopic exchange parameters and place strong constraints on the theoretical description of this prominent spin ice candidate.

Delocalized polaron and Burstein-Moss shift induced by Li in α–V 2 O 5 : A DFT + DMFT study

For this work, we performed density functional theory (DFT)+U and dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) calculations with a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo impurity solver to investigate the electronic properties of V 2 O 5 and Li x V 2 O 5 (x = 0.125 and 0.25). Pristine V 2 O 5 is a charge-transfer insulator with strong O p–V d hybridization, and it exhibits a large band gap (E gap ) as well as a nonzero conduction-band (CB) gap.We show that the band gap, the number of d electrons of vanadium, N d , and the CB gap for V 2 O 5 obtained from our DMFT calculations are in excellent agreement with the experimental values. While the DFT +U approach replicates the experimental band gap, it overestimates the value of N d and underestimates the CB gap. In the presence of low Li doping, the electronic properties of V 2 O 5 are mainly driven by a polaronic mechanism, and electron spin resonance and electron nuclear double resonance spectroscopies observed the coexistence of free and bound polarons. Notably, our DMFT results identify both polaron types, with the bound polaron being energetically preferred, while the DFT +U method only predicts the free polaron. Our DMFT analysis also reveals that increased Li doping leads to electron filling in the conduction band, shifting the Fermi level. This result is consistent with the observed Burstein-Moss shift upon enhanced Li doping, and we thus demonstrate that the DFT + DMFT approach can be used for an accurate and realistic description of strongly correlated materials.

Distinct behavior of localized and delocalized carriers in anatase TiO 2 (001) during reaction with O 2

Two-dimensional (2D) metallic states induced by oxygen vacancies $(V_{O}\text{s})$ at oxide surfaces and interfaces provide opportunities for the development of advanced applications, but the ability to control the behavior of these states is still limited. As such, we used angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy combined with density-functional theory (DFT) to study the reactivity of $V_O$-induced states at the (001) surface of anatase TiO 2 , where both 2D metallic and deeper lying in-gap states (IGs) are observed. The 2D and IG states exhibit remarkably different evolutions when the surface is exposed to molecular O 2 : while IGs are almost completely quenched, the metallic states are only weakly affected. DFT calculations indeed show that the IGs originate from surface $V_{O}\text{s}$ and remain localized at the surface, where they can promptly react with O 2 . In contrast, the metallic states originate from subsurface vacancies whose migration to the surface for recombination with O 2 is kinetically hindered on anatase TiO 2 (001), thus making them much less sensitive to oxygen dosing.

Primary intrinsic defects and their charge transition levels in β–Ga 2 O 3

A steady-state photocapacitance (SSPC) setup directly connected to the beamline of a MeV ion implanter is utilized to study primary intrinsic defects in β – Ga 2 O 3 generated by He implantation at cryogenic temperatures (120 K). At low temperatures, the migration of defects is suppressed, and hence the generation of primary intrinsic defects is expected to prevail. SSPC measurements reveal defect-related optical transitions in halide vapor-phase epitaxy (HVPE) -grown β – Ga 2 O 3 thin films with onset energies at 1.3 ( T 1 ) , 1.7 ( T 2 ) , 1.9 ( T 3 ) , 2.6 ( T 4 ) , 3.7 ( T 5 ) , and 4.2 eV ( T 6 ) . T 2 , T 4 , T 5 , and T 6 were observed in as-received HVPE-grown β – Ga 2 O 3 thin films, whereby T 2 is only sporadically observed. The introduction rates for T 3 , T 4 , as well as T 6 indicate an origin related to primary intrinsic defects. Notably, T 1 and T 3 are only observed after He implantation at cryogenic temperatures. Hybrid-functional calculations were performed to estimate the optical absorption cross-section spectra for the gallium ( Ga i ) and oxygen ( O i ) interstitials as well as the corresponding vacancies ( V Ga and V O , respectively), and compared with the measured onsets for optical absorption found by SSPC measurements. Indeed, we propose T 3 to be associated with Ga i ( + / + 2 ) and/or V GaI ( - 3 / - 2 ) , while T 4 is suggested to be related to V O K ( 0 / + ) ( K = I , II , III ) and/or V GaII ( - 3 / - 2 ) . Additionally, several further charge-state transition levels associated with V GaI and V GaII may contribute to T 4 and T 6 . We further studied the kinetics of the defects created with He implantation by exposing the sample to room temperature. The kinetics observed for T 3 and T 4 further support the proposed assignments of the corresponding defect signatures.

Quasi-one-dimensional Pb 5 Re 3 O 15 : A 5 d realization of the Heisenberg antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain

Quasi-one-dimensional (1D) magnetic compounds connect the exact solutions of low-dimensional magnetic geometries, which promise quantum spin liquid behavior and exotic quasiparticles, with real-world materials, in which competing magnetic interactions affect their implementation in quantum information science. Here, the structural determination and quasi-1D magnetic behavior of a previously unreported compound, Pb 5 ⁢Re 3 ⁡O 15 , is presented. Like the anisotropic triangular A 3 ⁢ReO 5 ⁢Cl 2 (A = Ba, Sr, Ca) materials, Pb 5 ⁢Re 3 ⁡O 15 contains [ReO 5 ] square pyramids inserted into anion-centered quasi-two-dimensional layers and hosts spin-1/2 moments on the Re 6+ ions. Pb 5 ⁢Re 3 ⁡O 15 , however, has a more ideal quasi-1D geometry than the A 3 ⁢ReO 5 ⁢Cl 2 materials, with larger interchain distances and interlayer spacing. Quasi-1D magnetic behavior in Pb 5 ⁢Re 3 ⁡O 15 is confirmed by fitting the temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility with the Bonner-Fisher model for a spin-1/2 antiferromagnetically coupled chain, yielding an intrachain coupling constant of |J|/k B =54.5K. Pb 5 ⁢Re 3 ⁡O 15 is highly insulating at room temperature, and heat capacity data below 10 K reveal a linear-T contribution that suggests the presence of low-temperature spinon excitations. Finally, with a lack of three-dimensional ordering down to at least 0.6 K, Pb 5 ⁢Re 3 ⁡O 15 is proposed as a model system for studying the quantum magnetism of quasi-1D Heisenberg chains in a real-world 5d 1 antiferromagnetic material.
