Accelerating cosmological inference with Gaussian processes and neural networks – an application to LSST Y1 weak lensing and galaxy clustering

ABSTRACT Studying the impact of systematic effects, optimizing survey strategies, assessing tensions between different probes and exploring synergies of different data sets require a large number of simulated likelihood analyses, each of which cost thousands of CPU hours. In this paper, we present a method to accelerate cosmological inference using emulators based on Gaussian process regression and neural networks. We iteratively acquire training samples in regions of high posterior probability which enables accurate emulation of data vectors even in high dimensional parameter spaces. We showcase the performance of our emulator with a simulated 3×2 point analysis of LSST-Y1 with realistic theoretical and systematics modelling. We show that our emulator leads to high-fidelity posterior contours, with an order of magnitude speed-up. Most importantly, the trained emulator can be re-used for extremely fast impact and optimization studies. We demonstrate this feature by studying baryonic physics effects in LSST-Y1 3×2 point analyses where each one of our MCMC runs takes approximately 5 min. This technique enables future cosmological analyses to map out the science return as a function of analysis choices and survey strategy.

Cosmological constraints from the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam year 1 shear catalogue lensing convergence probability distribution function

Here we utilize the probability distribution function (PDF) of normalized convergence maps reconstructed from the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) year 1 shear catalogue, in combination with the power spectrum, to measure the matter clustering amplitude S 8 = σ 8 $\sqrt {Ω_{m}/0.3}$. The large-scale structure’s statistical properties are incompletely described by the traditional two-point statistics, motivating our investigation of the PDF—a complementary higher-order statistic. By defining the PDF over the standard-deviation-normalized convergence map, we are able to isolate the non-Gaussian information. We use tailored simulations to compress the data vector and construct a likelihood approximation. We mitigate the impact of survey and astrophysical systematics with cuts on smoothing scales, redshift bins, and data vectors. We find S 8 = $0.860^{+0.066}_{–0.109}$ from the PDF alone and S 8 = 0.798$^{+0.029}_{–0.042}$ from the combination of the PDF and power spectrum (68% confidential level (CL)). The PDF improves the power-spectrum-only constraint by about 10%.

Characterizing degraded visual environments with scanning lenses to improve contrast recovery

Atmospheric aerosols, such as fog and smoke, degrade optical signals via the scattering and absorption of light, making it difficult to recover information from the surrounding environment. Here, we present a technique that measures the angular distribution of light in scattering environments to help recover these degraded optical signals. This is done by passing a collimated beam through the aerosol environment and collecting the scattered and unscattered light with an f-theta scan lens. The lens transforms the angular distribution of the scattered light into the linear domain, mapping the collected light onto a detector. The measured angular scattering distribution is then used to estimate the point spread function of the environment at an arbitrary stand-off distance. This point spread function can be used to deconvolve images blurred by the aerosol environment in which the angular scattering distribution was initially measured. With this approach, we demonstrate improvements in the effective resolution of deblurred images up to 26% over a 120-cm stand-off distance. Experimentation was performed in the Sandia National Laboratories tabletop fog chamber, a platform that generates aerosol environments analogous to real-world fogs. We intend to leverage this technique in future work to develop a low-SWaP system for the in situ characterization of aerosol environments.
