Evaluation of LANDSAT-1 image applications to geologic mapping, structural analysis and mineral resource inventory of South America with special emphasis on the Andes Mountain region

The author has identified the following significant results. The discovery of copper mineralization along a lineament mapped in Area 7 (La Paz) has lent credence to the use of LANDSAT 1 data as a basic step in mineral exploration. In Area 9 (Copiapo Region), a number of lineaments were found to be associated with the largest copper deposits of the region. In Area 12 (Magallanes), the identification of what is believed to be a tertiary basin from LANDSAT 1 data has resulted in a new area for petroleum exploration. Band 7 images, as black and white transparencies, were found to be the most useful for geologic interpretation in both tropical vegetated areas and desert regions. Color composites made by the diazochrome process, chromaline process, and from color additive viewers provided additional information. Mosaics of LANDSAT 1 data covering 4 x 6 degrees of latitude and longitude compiled at the 1:1,000,000 scale were found to be an ideal size and format for most users.

Natural resources inventory and land evaluation in Switzerland

The author has identified the following significant results. Using MSS channels 5 and 7 and a supervised classification system with a PPD classification algorithm, it was possible to map the exact areal extent of the snow cover and of the transition zone with melting snow patches and snow free parts of various sizes over a large area under different aspects such as relief, exposure, shadows etc. A correlation of the data from ground control, areal underflights and earth resources satellites provided a very accurate interpretation of the melting procedure of snow in high mountains.

Application of LANDSAT system for improving methodology for inventory and classification of wetlands

The author has identified the following significant results. Thematic maps were produced for surface water in stratum 46. The presence of large amounts of surface water, particularly during the May period, is readily apparent in the photoreduced thematic maps. Sheet water comprises much of the water detected in the May scene. Spring sheet water tends to be ephemeral and occurs as a result of an ice seal which exists within the underlying soil, temporarily preventing the percolation of water. The abundance of water in the May scene is also a result of unusually heavy precipitation which occurred during the spring and the previous fall. A qualitative analysis of the July map indicates surface water is less abundant than during the previous May; however, surface water present in the July 1975 LANDSAT scene was unusually abundant compared to other midsummer LANDSAT scenes obtained since 1972. This condition was particularly apparent for the drift plain.

Utilization of satellite data for inventorying prairie ponds and lakes

ERTS-1 data were used in mapping open surface water features in the glaciated prairies. Emphasis was placed on the recognition of these features based upon water's uniquely low radiance in a single near-infrared waveband. On the basis of these results, thematic maps and statistics relating to open surface water were obtained. In a related effort, the added information content of multiple spectral wavebands was used for discriminating surface water at a level of detail finer than the virtual resolution of the data. The basic theory of this technique and some preliminary results are described.

A literature review and inventory of the effects of environment on the fatigue behavior of metals

The current state of knowledge of the effects of gas environments (at atmospheric pressure and below) on the fatigue behavior of metals is reviewed. Among the topics considered are the mechanisms proposed to explain the differences observed in the fatigue behavior of vacuum- and air-tested specimens, the effects of environment on the surface topography of fatigue cycled specimens, the effect of environment on the various phases of the fatigue phenomenon, the effect of prolonged exposure to vacuum on fatigue life, the variation of fatigue life with decreasing gas pressure, and gas evolution during fatigue cycling. Analysis of the findings of this review indicates that hydrogen embrittlement is primarily responsible for decreased fatigue resistance in humid environments, and that dislocations move more easily during tests in vacuum than during test in air. It was found that fatigue cracks generally initiated and propagated more rapidly in air than in vacuum. Prolonged exposure to vacuum does not adversely affect fatigue resistance. The variation of fatigue life with decreasing gas pressure is sometimes stepped and sometimes continuous.

A remote sensing-aided small grains inventory using sequential Landsat imagery

A procedure for manual acreage estimation from Landsat imagery is proposed which involves a stepwise sequence of area stratification, simple size estimation, acreage estimation, and acreage precision calculation. The sample design consists of a systematic point sample of the Landsat imagery for crop type presence calibrated by a double sample of several image points having crop season-coincident ground data. The sample point layout chosen for cost-efficiency in manual sampling is a doubly aligned point matrix. The significant advantage of this sampling approach is that crop information is available from throughout the agricultural reporting unit. For technique demonstration purposes three strata were selected for sampling. The proposed technique can complement more sophisticated computer-based acreage estimation methodologies, and refinements in the sampling techniques promise significant improvements for operational utility.

Development and application of operational techniques for the inventory and monitoring of resources and uses for the Texas coastal zone

The author has identified the following significant results. Image interpretation mapping techniques were successfully applied to test site 5, an area with a semi-arid climate. The land cover/land use classification required further modification. A new program, HGROUP, added to the ADP classification schedule provides a convenient method for examining the spectral similarity between classes. This capability greatly simplifies the task of combining 25-30 unsupervised subclasses into about 15 major classes that approximately correspond to the land use/land cover classification scheme.

Evaluation criteria for software classification inventories, accuracies, and maps

Statistical criteria are presented for modifying the contingency table used to evaluate tabular classification results obtained from remote sensing and ground truth maps. This classification technique contains information on the spatial complexity of the test site, on the relative location of classification errors, on agreement of the classification maps with ground truth maps, and reduces back to the original information normally found in a contingency table.

Apollo 15 coarse fines (4-10 mm): Sample classification, description and inventory

A particle by particle binocular microscopic examination of all of the Apollo 15 4-10 mm fines samples is reported. These particles are classified according to their macroscopic lithologic features in order to provide a basis for sample allocations and future study. The relatively large size of these particles renders them too vaulable to permit treatment along with the other bulk fines, yet they are too small (and numerous) to practically receive full individual descriptive treatment as given the larger rock samples. This examination, classification and description of subgroups represents a compromise treatment. In most cases and for many types of investigation the individual particles should be large enough to permit the application of more than one type of analysis.

Application of LANDSAT system for improving methodology for inventory and classification of wetlands

The author has identified the following significant results. Processing of LANDSAT MSS data for detection of prairie ponds and lakes was completed. Data coverage included a 36,876 sq km area in southeastern North Dakota during May and July. Cloud coverage limited the May coverage to 87% of the total area. Data analysis was accomplished using three software programs. Wetland identification by MSS sensors were compared to visual counts obtained by observers in low flying aircraft. Pond numbers identified by LANDSAT averaged about 20% of those counted visually. The discrepancy was attributed to the fact that approximately 75% of the ponds in the glaciated prairie region are less than 0.4 ha in size. It is significant, however, that LANDSAT counts accurately reflect trends.

Large Area Crop Inventory Experiment (LACIE). Results of LACIE integrated drought analysis (Southern U.S. Great Plains drought 1975-76)

The development and intensification of the drought in the United States southern Great Plains was monitored during the initial growing period of the 1975-76 winter wheat crop. Because of the severity of the drought conditions, a drought analysis plan was developed and implemented beginning on March 8, 1976. Sample segments and full-frame imagery were used at 9-day intervals to identify the drought area and quantify the effects on the wheat acreage. Yield model simulations were run to extrapolate the effects of the drought on yield estimates at harvest, assuming 10 and 90 percent of normal rainfall for subsequent months and 30-day forecast. A survey of LANDSAT data for improvement of distribution of rainfall patterns in the drought area was done for April and yield models run for drought affected crop reporting districts. Special aggregations were performed by the Crop Assessment Subsystem on the drought area to evaluate the utility of remote sensing to monitor the effect of the drought on wheat area, yield, and production.

Application of LANDSAT system for improving methodology for inventory and classification of wetlands

The author has identified the following significant results. LANDSAT and aircraft data were compared for differences in absolute numbers of water bodies in the two data sets. This comparison was done using a linear regression analysis. The coefficients of determination were 0.65 and 0.74 for data of May and July, respectively. Standard statistical procedures were used to adjust the LANDSAT pond counts to actual pond numbers based on regression relationships.
