Optimization of a High Bunch Charge ERL Injection Merger for PERLE

Delivery of high charge electron bunches into the main loop of an ERL (energy recovery linac) while preserving the emittance is challenging. This is because at the typical injection momentum, space charge forces still have a significant effect on the beam dynamics. In this work we consider the design of the merger for PERLE, an ERL test facility to be based at IJCLab in France. Previous simulations have shown that the baseline DC gun based injector can achieve the required emittance at the booster linac exit. The quality of the 500 pC bunches must then be preserved with space charge through the merger at total beam energy of 7 MeV keeping the emittance below 6 mm mrad. The beam dynamics in the merger were simulated using the code OPAL and optimised using a genetic algorithm. Three possible merger schemes were investigated. The goal of the optimisation was to minimise the emittance growth while also achieving the required Twiss parameters to match onto the spreader at the main linac exit. A three dipole solution is then examined in more detail.

EUV FEL light source based on energy recovery linac with on-orbit laser plasma injection

We report on a week-long study of a conceptual design of EUV FEL light source based on an energy recovery linac with on-orbit laser plasma accelerator injection scheme. We carried out this study during USPAS Summer 2023 session of Unifying Physics of Accelerators, Lasers and Plasma applying the art of inventiveness TRIZ. An ultrashort Ti-sapphire laser accelerates electron beams from a gas target with mean energy of 20 MeV, which are then ramped up to 1 GeV in a five-turn scheme with a series of fixed field alternating magnets and two superconducting RF cavities (100 MeV per cavity per turn). The electron beam is then bypassed to an undulator line optimized to generate EUV light of 13.5 nm at kW level in a single pass.

Western Sector In-Situ Chemical Oxidation Project: Additional Injection Pilot Testing Supplemental Results (U)

Trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE) are persistent at elevated concentrations in the Western Sector of the M-Area Hazardous Waste Management Facility (HWMF) groundwater plume. Migration of these chlorinated ethenes as Dense Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids (DNAPLs) occurred from the M-Area Settling Basin along geologic strata resulting in a high concentration groundwater plume in Western Sector. Pump-and-treat has been active for over 30 years at the M-Area HWMF to hydraulically contain the primary sources of the plume in addition to other remediation strategies throughout the contaminated zone, like soil vapor extraction, dynamic underground stripping, groundwater recirculation wells, and bioremediation. In-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) has been identified as a viable treatment method for removal of these volatile organic compounds (VOCs) due to the complex lithology and high concentrations in this part of the aquifer. In addition to ISCO, a new recovery well (i.e., RWM018) was also installed in Western Sector to contain the high concentration VOC plume. The ISCO projects have utilized the gradient induced by RWM018 to help plan the injection and monitoring locations. The combination of ISCO and the additional pump and treat in Western Sector with the installation of RWM018 will help to control the plume and maximize remediation efforts.

Enabling Lean and Stoichiometric Gasoline Direct Injection Engines through Mitigation of Nanoparticle Emissions

This project had the objective to efficiently reduce particulate mass (PM) and particulate number (PN) from lean and stoichiometric gasoline direction injection engines used in light duty vehicle applications. It also sought to use suspended particle instruments to measure the effective density, illustrating a pathway for new methods for accurately measuring soot mass at low concentration. The three-year effort took a systems level approach to evaluate fuel and lubricant impacts on GDI soot formation in lean and stoichiometric operation and to evaluate the impact of these factors on soot filtration aftertreatment in three-way catalyst-coated gasoline particulate filters (GPFs).

The Fingerprints of Stratospheric Aerosol Injection in E3SM

The June 15, 1991 Mt. Pinatubo eruption is simulated in E3SM by injecting 10 Tg of SO 2 gas in the stratosphere, turning off prescribed volcanic aerosols, and enabling E3SM to treat stratospheric volcanic aerosols prognostically. This experimental prognostic treatment of volcanic aerosols in the stratosphere results in some realistic behaviors (SO 2 evolves into H 2 SO 4 which heats the lower stratosphere), and some expected biases (H 2 SO 4 aerosols sediment out of the stratosphere too quickly). Climate fingerprinting techniques are used to establish a Mt. Pinatubo fingerprint based on the vertical profile of temperature from the E3SMv1 DECK ensemble. By projecting reanalysis data and preindustrial simulations onto the fingerprint, the Mt. Pinatubo stratospheric heating anomaly is detected. Projecting the experimental prognostic aerosol simulation onto the fingerprint also results in a detectable heating anomaly, but, as expected, the duration is too short relative to reanalysis data.

Ducted Fuel Injection and Cooled Spray Technologies for Particulate Control in Heavy-Duty Diesel Engines

Heavy-Duty diesel engine manufacturers are continuously in pursuit of simple and low-cost technologies that can reduce emissions. Ducted fuel injection (DFI) and Cooled Spray (CS) technologies are two technologies that continue to show promise for significant particulate emissions reductions. These technologies represent a breakthrough in diesel engine combustion from the potential of nearly sootless diesel combustion. This can provide a significant decrease in harmful PM emissions and may enable further system optimization for reduced NOx emissions and increased efficiency. Combustion vessel experiments and engine demonstrations at Sandia, together with the large bore engine tests performed by Wabtec show that this technology may be applicable to heavy duty diesel engines across a wide range of engine sizes and speeds representing the majority of off-road diesel engines. However, very little is known about the ideal geometry, scaling properties or effectiveness of these technologies over the engine operating map. This project will address those uncertainties through a series of experiments performed in an optical and a metal single-cylinder engine.

Oxygenated Fuel Blending Effects in a Mixing-Controlled Compression-Ignition Engine Equipped with Ducted Fuel Injection [Slides]

Continued creation of harmful emissions such as NO x and soot from compression-ignition engines utilizing mixing-controlled combustion systems (i.e., diesel engines) remains a problem and is the subject of on-going research. The inherently high efficiency, relatively low cost, and numerous other desirable attributes of such engines, coupled with a widely supported infrastructure, motivates their continued advancement. Recently, a scientifically distinct and mechanically simple technology called ducted fuel injection (DFI) has shown a robust ability to allow such engines to operate with simultaneously low engine-out soot and NO x emissions when it is employed with simulated exhaust-gas recirculation. To better understand the property ranges of sustainable, oxygenated-fuel blending stocks that will most improve engine performance, two oxygenated blendstocks were separately blended with a commercial diesel base fuel and tested within a heavy-duty diesel optical engine equipped with a four-duct DFI configuration. Conventional and crank-angle-resolved optical diagnostics were used to elucidate the effects of fuel ignition quality, oxygenate molecular structure, and overall oxygen content on engine performance.
