RF processing

The Loran-C radio frequency processing is discussed. A diagram which generally illustrates the automatic gain control is presented. The augmented differentiator for pulse envelopes adapts conventional communications receiver with wideband AM capability to detect pulse signals such as Loran-C. The circuit enhances reception for surveillance and observation of HF over-the-horizon radar signals or others where time difference estimates between pulse returns are of interest. The high resolution VLF spectrum which receives weak VLF signals by using an HP 3581A wave analyzer detecting signals with a very narrow bandwidth of only 3 Hz is also presented.

IUE data reduction: Wavelength determinations and line identifications using a VAX/750 computer

A fully automated, interactive system for determining the wavelengths of features in extracted IUE spectra is described. Wavelengths are recorded from video displays of expanded plots of individual orders using a movable cursor, and then corrected for IUE wavelength scale errors. The estimated accuracy of an individual wavelength in the final tabulation is 0.050 A. Such lists are ideally suited for line identification work using the method of wavelength coincidence statistics (WCS). The results of WCS studies of the ultraviolet spectra of the chemically peculiar (CP) stars iota Coronae Borealis and kappa Camcri. Aside from confirming a number of previously reported aspects of the abundance patterns in these stars, the searches produced some interesting, new discoveries, notably the presence of Hf in the spectrum of kappa Camcri. The implications of this work for theories designed to account for anomalous abundances in chemically peculiar stars are discussed.

Remote detection of the maximum altitude of equatorial ionospheric plasma bubbles

Nearly 200 post-sunset low-altitude passes of the Alouette 2 and ISIS 1 satellites near the dip equator are studied in order to find the maximum ionospheric plasma bubble altitudes, which are determined by calculating the apex altitude of the magnetic field line passing through the satellite when it is immersed in a bubble. The calculations are made only upon the observation of conjugate hemisphere ionospheric echoes, which result from ducted HF sounder signals that are guided along field-aligned irregularities within the plasma depletion. The maximum bubble altitudes corresponding to the three longitude sectors centered on zero deg, 75 deg W, and 105 deg E, are found to often exceed 1000 km, but seldom 3000 km. The electron density depletions within these field-aligned bubbles, as measured at the point of satellite encounter with the topside ionosphere, are generally less than a factor of two but may exceed a factor of ten.

Theory of metal atom-water interactions and alkali halide dimers

Theoretical studies of the interactions of metal atoms with water and some of its isoelectronic analogs, and of the properties of alkali halides and their aggregates are discussed. Results are presented of ab initio calculations of the heats of reaction of the metal-water adducts and hydroxyhydrides of Li, Be, B, Na, Mg, and Al, and of the bond lengths and angles an; the heats of reaction for the insertion of Al into HF, H2O, NH3, H2S and CH3OH, and Be and Mg into H2O. Calculations of the electron affinities and dipole moments and polarizabilities of selected gas phase alkali halide monomers and dimers are discussed, with particular attention given to results of calculations of the polarizability of LiF taking into account electron correlation effects, and the polarizability of the dimer (LiF)2.

Influence of cobalt, tantalum, and tungsten on the microstructure and mechanical properties of superalloy single crystals

The influence of Co, Ta, and W on the microstructure and mechanical properties of nickel base super-alloy single crystals was investigated. A matrix of alloys was based on Mar-M 247 stripped of C, B, Zr, and Hf. The microstructures of the alloys were examined using optical and electron microscopy, phase extraction, X-ray diffraction, and differential thermal analysis. Tensile and creep-rupture tests were performed at 1000 C. An increase in tensile and creep strength resulted when Co was removed from alloys containing high refractory metal contents, but Co effects were negligible for alloys with lower refractory metal levels. In the composition range studied, W was more effective than Ta in increasing the creep resistance. The mechanical properties are discussed in relation to the microstructures of the alloys.

Mechanical properties of low tantalum alloys

The mechanical property behavior of equiaxed cast B-1900 + Hf alloy as a function of tantalum content was studied. Tensile and stress rupture characterization was conducted on cast to size test bars containing tantalum at the 4.3% (standard level), 2.2% and 0% levels. Casting parameters were selected to duplicate conditions used to prepare test specimens for master metal heat qualification. The mechanical property results as well as results of microstructural/phase analysis of failed test bars are presented.

Development of Fe-Mn-Al-X-C alloys

Development of a low cost Cr-free, iron-base alloy for aerospace applications involves both element substitution and enhancement of microstructural strengthening. When Mn is substituted for Ni and Al or Si is substituted for Cr, large changes occur in the mechanical and thermal stability of austenite in FeMnAlC alloys. The in situ strength of MC or M2C (M = Ti, V, Hf, Ta, or Mo) in FeMnAlC alloys was determined. The high temperature tensile strength depends more on the distribution of carbides than the carbide composition. Precipitation of a high volume percent-ordered phase was achieved in Fe2OMnlONi6Al6Ti (lC) alloys. As case, these alloys have a homogeneous austenitic structure. After solutioning at 1100 C for 5 hr followed by aging at 600 C for 16 hr, gamma prime or a perovskite carbide is precipitated. Overaging occurs at 900 C where eta is precipitated.

RS-232 communications analyzer module for HP-1602A logic analyzer

The design and construction of a simple ASCII analyzer is described. It was built to interface directly to a Hewlett-Packard 1602A logic state analyzer but the circuitry could easily be configured to operate with any logic analyzer. The design of the ASCII analyzer allows the use of all the trace and delay functions for the HF-1602A. The ASCII analyzer circuit utilizes two universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitters (UAR/Ts) to simultaneously examine both the transmit and receive serial data lines. Baud rates from 300 to 9600 bits per second are selectable with the externally mounted DIP switch. The unit requires no external power supply connection and all of the integrated circuits are CMOS for low power consumption.

Halogen Occultation Experiment (HALOE) gas cell life test program

The Halogen Occultation Experiment (HALOE) will use gas filter correlation radiometry to measure the atmospheric concentration profiles of HCl, HF, NO, and CH4 from the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite. The need to contain the gases for the gas filter measurements has resulted in the development of gas cells and the need for a life test program to demonstrate that the gas cells will perform their functions for extended periods (several years) of time. This report describes the tests in the life test program, the test apparatus used, and the analysis techniques developed. The report also presents data obtained during the first 14 months of the test program.

Study of multiple optical transitions in 87Rb using laser diodes

Recent work with laser diodes has indicated their potential usefulness in optically pumping atomic frequency standards. Various optical pumping schemes for (87)Rb incorporating such light sources at two D1 frequencies for experimental situations of either evacuated wall-coated cells or atomic beams are considered. Numerical integration of rate equations governing the level populations with arbitrary pumping light choices of intensity, D1 hyperfine transition(s), and polarization and subsequent calculation of scattered light provide a simplified 0-0 hyperfine signal analysis. By frequency modulating one laser diode, two optical transitions were excited in an evacuated wall-coated cell and a large delta m(F) = 1 hf signal was observed.

The Apollo 15 yellow impact glasses - Chemistry, petrology, and exotic origin

The Apollo 15 yellow impact glasses are characterized by moderate TiO2 (about 4.8%) and high abundances of the large ion lithophile elements (e.g., K, P, Hf, Th, REE). Since the chemistry of these glasses cannot be duplicated by any combination of local components presently known to occur at the Apollo 15 landing site, these yellow glasses seem to be exotic to that area. Chemical and petrologic constraints suggest that these samples were produced by impact melting of an immature mare regolith developed upon an unusual variety of mare basalt. It is speculated that the target basalts were the youngest lava flows known to exist on the moon (i.e., Eratosthenian-age lavas in Oceanus Procellarum and Mare Imbrium). Specific tests are proposed for evaluating this provocative hypothesis.

On the siting of noble gases in E-chondrites

Fractions of six E-chondrites were separated by density, grain size, and chemical resistance to determine the siting of noble gases. The samples were taken from the Qingzhen (E3), Indarch (E4), Abee and Saint Saveur (E4-5), and Yilmia and North West Forrest (E6) meteorites. The Ar-rich component of the E6s was concentrated in the enstatite-rich fraction. This subsolar component was resistant to HCl and HNO3 treatment, but could be partially dissolved by HF, implying that the subsolar component is located in the enstatite. The noble gases were transported there by metamorphism. Xe-129 was found in the same regions in the E6s, but was in areas associated with chondrules in the E4s. Additionally, the carbon-rich fraction of the E4 sample displayed Xe and Ne/CCF-Xe isotopic ratios similar to that found in C-chondrites. E3 and E4 primordial gases were analogous, with no subsolar contribution.

Rotational and vibrational spectra of ethynol from quantum-mechanical calculations

It is noted that ethynol (HCCOH), despite the theoretical prediction of its stability to tautomerization to ketene, has thus far not been observed. It is shown here that the identification of this unknown molecule, both in space and in the laboratory, can be aided by an ab initio calculation of spectroscopic parameters. At the HF/3-21G level, harmonic vibrational frequencies are computed by way of analytic second differentiation of the Hartee-Fock (HF) energy with respect to the nuclear coordinates. After applying an empirical scale factor, the resultant frequencies are (per cm) 473, 517, 773, 841, 1003, 1217, 2206, 3285, and 3418. The computed dipole moment at the CISD/DZ+P level is 1.79 D. At the CISD+Q/DZ+P level, the molecule's rotational constants are determined. After scaling by empirical correction factors, they are used in deriving the 4(04) - 3(03) frequency of 76.81 + or - 0.3 GHz with a triplet splitting of 0.30 + or - 0.01 GHz. The triplet splitting involves 4(14) - 3(13) and 4(13) - 3(12) relative to the 4(04) - 3(03) transition as the central line.

Vegetation classification based on Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer /AVHRR/ satellite imagery

Data from the NOAA-6 spacecraft Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) were tested for effectiveness for vegetation classification. Vegetation, climatological, and meteorological data were gathered for three days over 12 locations, and the normalized differences between the AVHRR bands 1 and 2 were determined. A vegetative greenness index was compared with a hydrologic factor and vegetation characteristics as measured by ground truth. A multivariate vegetation gradient model was formulated, incorporating AVHRR and climatological data. The hydrologic factor was calculated in terms of the precipitation, evaporation, maximum and minimum temperatures, and the hydrologic capacity. The observations were taken over Texas, which has a wide range of climates. A high correlation was found in the vegetation-HF index. The AVHRR data are concluded to be an effective tool for analysis of vegetation/climate relationships.
