Progress towards subsurface spectroscopy inside heterogeneous materials using four wave mixing phase conjugation

Herein, we report preliminary results on subsurface spectroscopy inside heterogeneous materials using four wave mixing phase conjugation. For our test material we use an inert plastic bonded explosive simulant that contains fluorescent guidestar particles. Using phase conjugation, we are able to obtain spectral enhancements approximately equal to the phase conjugate reflectivity. Additionally, we discuss future directions to improve this technique to obtain greater signal enhancements.

Flexible and Effective Object Tiering for Heterogeneous Memory Systems

Computing platforms that package multiple types of memory, each with their own performance characteristics, are quickly becoming mainstream. To operate efficiently, heterogeneous memory architectures require new data management solutions that are able to match the needs of each application with an appropriate type of memory. As the primary generators of memory usage, applications create a great deal of information that can be useful for guiding memory management, but the community still lacks tools to collect, organize, and leverage this information effectively. To address this gap, this work introduces a novel software framework that collects and analyzes object-level information to guide memory tiering. The framework includes tools to monitor the capacity and usage of individual data objects, routines that aggregate and convert this information into tier recommendations for the host platform, and mechanisms to enforce these recommendations according to user-selected policies. Moreover, the developed tools and techniques are fully automatic, work on standard Linux systems, and do not require modification or recompilation of existing software. Using this framework, this study evaluates and compares the impact of a variety of design choices for memory tiering, including different policies for prioritizing objects for the fast memory tier as well as the frequency and timing of migration events. In conclusion, the results, collected on a modern Intel platform with conventional DDR4 SDRAM as well as Intel Optane NVRAM, show that guiding data tiering with object-level information can enable significant performance and efficiency benefits compared with standard hardware- and software-directed data-tiering strategies for a diverse set of memory-intensive workloads.

A new approach for resonance treatment of doubly heterogeneous fuel using the RSE method

A new resonance calculation method for the doubly-heterogeneous (DH) fuels such as high- temperature gas-cooled reactor fuel is proposed based on the resonance calculation based on Spectral Expansion (RSE) method. The concept of pointwise disadvantage factor for fuel grain is taken into account to treat the DH fuels. The verification calculation is carried out for simplified single fuel cell and fuel compact consisting of five fuel cells and graphite moderator. The calculation results indicate that the present method can appropriately handle the space- dependent self-shielding effect for DH fuels. (authors)

A universal metasurface transfer technique for heterogeneous integration

Metasurfaces offer a versatile platform for engineering the wavefront of light using nanostructures with subwavelength dimensions and hold great promise for dramatically miniaturizing conventional optical elements due to their small footprint and broad functionality. However, metasurfaces so far have been mainly demonstrated on bulky and planar substrates that are often orders of magnitude thicker than the metasurface itself. Conventional substrates not only nullify the reduced footprint advantage of metasurfaces, but also limit their application scenarios. The bulk substrate also determines the metasurface dielectric environment, with potentially undesired optical effects that undermine the optical performance. Here we develop a universal polymer-assisted transfer technique to tackle this challenge by decoupling the substrate employed on the fabrication of metasurfaces from that used for the target application. As an example, Huygens’ metasurfaces with 120 nm thickness in the visible range (532 nm) are demonstrated to be transferred onto a 100 nm thick freestanding SiN x membrane while maintaining excellent structural integrity and optical performance of diffraction-limited focusing. This transfer method not only enables the thinnest dielectric metalens to the best of our knowledge, but also opens up new opportunities in integrating cascaded and multilayer metasurfaces, as well as the heterogeneous integration with nonconventional substrates and various electronic/photonic devices.

Data for: Ultrasonic characterization of material heterogeneities in stainless steel parts fabricated by powder bed fusion

These are the raw ultrasonic waveform files and nanoindentation measurements for three additively manufactured 316L stainless steel components with different fabrication parameters. Each part's length is divided into four segmented regions where their fabrication energy densities change. Part V+ begins at 33 J/mm^3 and increases in energy density by 3 J/mm^3 with each segment. Part C remains at a constant 33 J/mm^3 throughout the part. Part V- begins at 33 J/mm^3 and decreases in energy density by 3 J/mm^3 with each segment. We have found that the ultrasonic waves in regions with higher energy densities will traverse more quickly, as shown by the shorter time of flight, and vice versa. Similarly, nanoindentation measurements of reduced modulus and hardness follow this trend. We have measured the direction in which the parts were fabricated (build direction) and the segmented regions that are perpendicular to the build direction (transverse directions). The build direction longitudinal wave velocity measurements are considerably lower than their transverse direction counterparts, indicating anisotropy between the two directions. In Part C, we have removed material from one of its surfaces and recorded its ultrasonic and nanoindentation measurements with each material removal iteration. Changes in the material properties are more prominent by nanoindentation, suggesting material heterogeneity between the part's surface and interior. The README.txt file has information on how to navigate the files and process the data.

Using probability distribution function as a scaling approach to incorporate soil heterogeneity into biogeochemical models for greenhouse gas predictions (Final Technical Report)

The project investigated biogeochemical processes at terrestrial-aquatic interfaces (TAIs), focusing on soil microsite heterogeneity and its impact on greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes. Using laboratory experiments, modeling, and data integration, researchers explored redox-driven microbial processes under fluctuating hydrological conditions. Key advancements included modifying the DAMM-GHG model to incorporateelectron acceptor availability and enhancing the AquaMEND model for improved microbial metabolism representation. Results highlighted microsite redox variability as a key driver of GHG fluxes, informing Earth system models. The project fostered interdisciplinary collaborations, student training, and the development of novel modeling frameworks to improve Earth'senergy budget.

Single-Cell RNA-Seq Reveals Transcriptomic Heterogeneity and Post-Traumatic Osteoarthritis-Associated Early Molecular Changes in Mouse Articular Chondrocytes

Articular cartilage is a connective tissue lining the surfaces of synovial joints. When the cartilage severely wears down, it leads to osteoarthritis (OA), a debilitating disease that affects millions of people globally. The articular cartilage is composed of a dense extracellular matrix (ECM) with a sparse distribution of chondrocytes with varying morphology and potentially different functions. Elucidating the molecular and functional profiles of various chondrocyte subtypes and understanding the interplay between these chondrocyte subtypes and other cell types in the joint will greatly expand our understanding of joint biology and OA pathology. Although recent advances in high-throughput OMICS technologies have enabled molecular-level characterization of tissues and organs at an unprecedented resolution, thorough molecular profiling of articular chondrocytes has not yet been undertaken, which may be in part due to the technical difficulties in isolating chondrocytes from dense cartilage ECM. In this study, we profiled articular cartilage from healthy and injured mouse knee joints at a single-cell resolution and identified nine chondrocyte subtypes with distinct molecular profiles and injury-induced early molecular changes in these chondrocytes. We also compared mouse chondrocyte subpopulations to human chondrocytes and evaluated the extent of molecular similarity between mice and humans. This work expands our view of chondrocyte heterogeneity and rapid molecular changes in chondrocyte populations in response to joint trauma and highlights potential mechanisms that trigger cartilage degeneration.

Subsurface Spectroscopy in Heterogeneous Materials Using Self-Healing Laser Beams

Self-healing optical beams are a class of propagation modes that can recover their beam shapes after distortion or partial blockage. This self-healing property makes them attractive for use in applications involving turbid media as they can—in theory—penetrate further into these materials than standard Gaussian beams. In this paper, we characterize the propagation of two different self-healing beams (Bessel and Airy) through a solid scattering material with different scatterer concentrations and find that both beams do recover after scattering for samples below a threshold scatterer concentration. Additionally, we test the applicability of both beam shapes for improved sub-surface spectroscopy in heterogeneous materials using fluorescent particles and find that there is an average fluorescence intensity enhancement of 1.3× using self-healing beams versus a standard Gaussian beam.
