Linear minimum variance filters applied to carrier tracking

A new approach is taken to the problem of tracking a fixed amplitude signal with a Brownian-motion phase process. Classically, a first-order phase-lock loop (PLL) is used; here, the problem is treated via estimation of the quadrature signal components. In this space, the state dynamics are linear with white multiplicative noise. Therefore, linear minimum-variance filters, which have a particularly simple mechanization, are suggested. The resulting error dynamics are linear at any signal/noise ratio, unlike the classical PLL. During synchronization, and above threshold, this filter with constant gains degrades by 3 per cent in output rms phase error with respect to the classical loop. However, up to 80 per cent of the maximum possible noise improvement is obtained below threshold, where the classical loop is nonoptimum, as demonstrated by a Monte Carlo analysis. Filter mechanizations are presented for both carrier and baseband operation.

Electrically-controlled variable-color optical filters

Optical transmission characteristics of birefringent element are changed by applying voltage to plate. Filters are used on sequential-color television cameras and in color displays. Filters are more convenient and less costly than mechanical color wheels and crystal-based filters.

Determination of the energy or pressure of a solar X-ray structure using X-ray filtergrams from a single filter

While the X-ray fluxes measured through two different broadband filters can be used to derive the temperatures and emission measures of solar plasmas, it is generally assumed that no plasma parameters can be measured quantitatively with a single filtergram alone. It is shown that the thermal energy density (or pressure) of a solar plasma can be measured with an ideal single filtergram. Calculations have been done to compare the properties of the Skylab S-054 X-ray telescope filters with those of the ideal filter.

Filtering of non-linear instabilities

For Courant numbers larger than one and cell Reynolds numbers larger than two, oscillations and in some cases instabilities are typically found with implicit numerical solutions of the fluid dynamics equations. This behavior has sometimes been associated with the loss of diagonal dominance of the coefficient matrix. It is shown that these problems can be related to the choice of the spatial differences, with the resulting instability related to aliasing or nonlinear interaction. Appropriate filtering can reduce the intensity of these oscillations and possibly eliminate the instability. These filtering procedures are equivalent to a weighted average of conservation and nonconservation differencing. The entire spectrum of filtered equations retains a three point character as well as second order spatial accuracy. Burgers equation was considered as a model.

Requirements for Kalman filtering on the GE-701 whole word computer

The results of a study to determine scaling, storage, and word length requirements for programming the Kalman filter on the GE-701 Whole Word Computer are reported. Simulation tests are presented which indicate that the Kalman filter, using a square root formulation with process noise added, utilizing MLS, radar altimeters, and airspeed as navigation aids, may be programmed for the GE-701 computer to successfully navigate and control the Boeing B737-100 during landing approach, landing rollout, and turnoff. The report contains flow charts, equations, computer storage, scaling, and word length recommendations for the Kalman filter on the GE-701 Whole Word computer.

Development and flight tests of a Kalman filter for navigation during terminal area and landing operations

A Kalman filter for aircraft terminal area and landing navigation was implemented and flight tested in the NASA Ames STOLAND avionics computer onboard a Twin Otter aircraft. This system combines navaid measurements from TACAN, MODILS, air data, radar altimeter sensors along with measurements from strap-down accelerometer and attitude angle sensors. The flight test results demonstrate that the Kalman filter provides improved estimates of the aircraft position and velocity as compared with estimates from the more standard complementary filter. The onboard computer implementation requirements to achieve this improved performance are discussed.

An application of the square root information filter to large scale linear interconnected systems

It is demonstrated that use of the square root information filter (SRIF) can reduce the storage and computation required for estimation of certain classes of large-scale interconnected systems. The SRIF uses an information array that is related to the Kalman filter covariance and estimate. The SRIF algorithm, which is optimal, is a direct application of matrix partitioning to some optimal filtering algorithms described in the literature. The SRIF algorithm is able to reduce the storage requirements of a 40-subsystem 10-state problem by a full order of magnitude.

Performance analysis of a filtered wide field-of-view radiometer for earth radiation budget measurements

The proposed Earth Radiation Budget Satellite System (ERBSS) of the 1980's will include a wide field-of-view (WFOV) fixed axes earth radiator discriminator consisting of a shortwave channel and a total (unfiltered) channel. The broadband spectral isolation required for the shortwave channel is achieved by use of a hemispherical fused silica (Suprasil W) dome filter placed in front of a wire wound thermopile radiation detector. A description is presented of the thermal response of the single-fused silica dome filter in the ERBSS WFOV shortwave channel conceptual design and the impact of that response on the channel measurement. Results from design definition and performance analysis studies are included. Problems associated with achieving the desired levels of confidence in a high accuracy filtered, WFOV radiometer are discussed. Design approaches, ground calibration, and data reduction techniques which minimize measurement uncertainties are explained.

The discrete-time compensated Kalman filter

A suboptimal dynamic compensator to be used in conjunction with the ordinary discrete-time Kalman filter is derived. The resultant compensated Kalman filter has the property that steady-state bias estimation errors, resulting from modelling errors, are eliminated. The implementation of the compensated Kalman filter involves the use of accumulators in the residual channels in addition to the nominal dynamic model of the stochastic system.

Aliasing filter for multirate systems

Rolloff filter is inexpensive way of reducing aliasing in digital control systems. Rolloff filter operating at faster sample rate (or rates) of system with 2:1 rate ratio gives infinite attenuation at half-sample rate of fast-rate loop. Tested successfully on Space Shuttle primary flight-control systems, filter technique could be applied to other multirate sampled-data systems.

Design of a nonlinear adaptive filter for suppression of shuttle pilot-induced oscillation tendencies

Analysis of a longitudinal pilot-induced oscillation (PIO) experienced just prior to touchdown on the final flight of the space shuttle's approach landing tests indicated that the source of the problem was a combination of poor basic handling qualities aggravated by time delays through the digital flight control computer and rate limiting of the elevator actuators due to high pilot gain. A nonlinear PIO suppression (PIOS) filter was designed and developed to alleviate the vehicle's PIO tendencies by reducing the gain in the command path. From analytical and simulator studies it was shown that the PIOS filter, in an adaptive fashion, can attenuate the command path gain without adding phase lag to the system. With the pitch attitude loop of a simulated shuttle model closed, the PIOS filter increased the gain margin by a factor of about two.

Smoothing filters

The improvement of accuracy in using the smoothing filter instead of the Kalman filter is discussed. Factors of improvement for velocity errors of up to four are shown for position measurements. Smoothing equations are presented, and it is shown that smoothing equations for the smoothing filter appear to be stable.

Stability boundaries for systems with frequency-model feedback and complacency filter

General parameter-plane equations were derived to generate boundaries for a class of systems characterized by a feedback loop that contains a complementary filter and a model for either the low- or high-frequency portion of the plant. This combination allows those frequencies of the part of the plant that is modeled to be fed back for control while suppressing other frequencies. For all specific examples considered, the stability regions obtained using the complementary filter and frequency model were larger (and in some cases, considerably larger) than those obtained using a low pass filter in the feedback of the system output. Furthermore, higher gain control was possible.

Sample data effects of high-pass filters

Four mathematical models of linear first and second order high pass washout filters were analyzed. These models were Euler's Integration, Zero-Order Hold, Bilinear Transformation, and Second-Order Adams-Bashforth Integration. Bode responses for each model at various sample rates were compared to the continuous filter response. Higher sample rates produced Bode responses approaching the continuous response and the Bilinear Transformation model produced the best responses over the frequency spectrum and sample rates. Pole location analysis of each model in the z-plane showed the Bilinear Transformation and Zero-Order Hold models gave stable poles regardless of time step size, whereas the other models did not display stable poles. A near constant gain error over the entire frequency spectrum was discovered in the Zero-Order Hold cases and a correction gain was calculated for the first-order high-pass filter case.

Two dimensional recursive digital filters for near real time image processing

A program was designed toward the demonstration of the feasibility of using two dimensional recursive digital filters for subjective image processing applications that require rapid turn around. The concept of the use of a dedicated minicomputer for the processor for this application was demonstrated. The minicomputer used was the HP1000 series E with a RTE 2 disc operating system and 32K words of memory. A Grinnel 256 x 512 x 8 bit display system was used to display the images. Sample images were provided by NASA Goddard on a 800 BPI, 9 track tape. Four 512 x 512 images representing 4 spectral regions of the same scene were provided. These images were filtered with enhancement filters developed during this effort.

A scaling correlator optical pattern recognition system is described in which a lensless matched spatial filter (with the second Fourier transform lens and the matched spatial filter recorded on the same plate) is used with a first Fourier transform lens that is also an holographic optical element. The matched spatial filter is recorded at one wavelength and correlation is obtained at a second wavelength. Experimental demonstration and output correlation SNR data are reported, together with a comparison of the system's noise level using conventional optics and holographic elements.

A spatial domain adaptive Wiener filter for smoothing radar images corrupted by multiplicative noise is presented. The filter is optimum in a minimum mean squared error sense, computationally efficient, and preserves edges in the image better than other filters. The proposed algorithm can also be used for processing optical images with illumination variations that have a multiplicative effect.
