Further development of finite-temperature density functional theory (Technical Report on FG02-08ER46496)

The final year of funding was spent supporting research into extending conditional probability theory to generate the thermal dependence of PBE. The necessary background work led to a paper being published on the uniform electron gas (Dennis Perchak, Ryan J. McCarty, and Kieron Burke, Phys. Rev. B 105, 165143 (2022).). The graduate student John Kozlowski also contributed to a mathematical paper about DFT (Steven Crisostomo, Ryan Pederson, John Kozlowski, Bhupalee Kalita, Antonio C. Cancio, Kiril Datchev, Adam Wasserman, Suhwan Song, and Kieron Burke, Letters in Mathematical Physics 113, 42 (2023).).

Support of the Third Summer School and Workshop Focused on Theory and Applications of Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory, Electronic Excited States, and Excited State Dynamics

To create a community of scholars with a deep understanding of TDDFT and excited state methods, both their capabilities and limitations, and how they can be used to model the excited state properties and charge transfer in materials and molecules, we are planning the third iteration of a summer school and workshop focusing on theory and applications of TDDFT, Excited States, and Excited State Dynamics to be offered in the summer of 2023. The two iterations of the US-based school that we previously organized have been very successful with overwhelmingly positive feedback. There is a high level of engagement, enthusiasm, and active participation and networking amongst the students of the school and the scientists of the workshop.

Density functional theory (DFT) study of UF 6 hydrolysis: reaction pathways, spectroscopy, and chemical kinetics

Depleted uranium hexafluoride (UF 6 ), a stockpiled byproduct of the nuclear fuel cycle, reacts readily with atmospheric humidity, but the gas-phase reaction mechanism and associated chemical kinetics are poorly understood. During the performance period we undertook development of a state-of-the-art ab initio gas-phase chemical kinetics simulation workflow to model the hydrolysis of uranium hexafluroride (UF 6 ). In doing so, we addressed several outstanding issues in the theoretical treatment of uranium-containing systems. At the outset it was unclear how to generate accurate estimates of kinetic and thermodynamic data for U-containing chemical reactions. Generation of such data has been made routine. Prior to our work, the literature associated with UF 6 hydrolysis were disparate and inaccurate. This body of work provides a modern and comprehensive theoretical assessment of the reaction mechanism, molecular clustering towards deposition, and chemical kinetics. New methodological implementations and software integrations resulting from this work are also highlighted. As much as possible, our predictions were validated against experimental data including particle morphologies, vibrational spectroscopy, atomization enthalpies, and kinetic rate constants. Nevertheless, we were unable to reconcile kinetic measurements with high-accuracy simulations.

Probability Density Function for the spatial and intensity distribution of neutron-induced defects in Silicon

The ability to model semiconductor device degradation under neutron irradiation depends upon having a robust modeling capability for the neutron-induced collision cascades as well as a means to analytically fit the resulting probability distributions of defect production and ionizing energy deposition for purposes of extrapolation to low-probability, high-consequence scenarios. In this paper, the widely-utilized binary collision approximation codes MARLOWE and SRIM are deployed in conjunction with a critical examination of their parameterizations as benchmarked against higher-fidelity molecular dynamics simulations. A simple 3-parameter form described by the Generalized Logistic Distribution is shown to be a good fit to Frenkel pair and ionization intensity distributions in bulk silicon. The BCA codes are then applied to simulate cascades in 5 nm layers of a representative gate-all-around nanosheet transistor, where joint probability distributions of threshold levels of damage to multiple layers are evaluated.

Density Functional Theory Analysis of Candidate Tritium Permeation Barriers for Vanadium Alloys as a Fusion Structural Material

Vanadium alloys are being considered as a candidate structural material for the breeder blanket component of future fusion reactors due to their good thermal conductivity, low activation, and chemical compatibility with FLiBe. However, vanadium has a high hydrogen solubility, resulting in hydrogen diffusion and trapping in the vanadium structural alloy and lower than expected tritium breeding ratios. To mitigate the permeation of hydrogen into the structural alloy, a tritium permeation barrier will be coated onto the vanadium alloy. Multiple materials have been proposed as candidate tritium permeation barriers, but the extent to which each of these materials impacts hydrogen diffusion and trapping is still unknown. In this project, we perform atomic-scale calculations to narrow down the list of potential tritium permeation barrier candidates and to understand the mechanisms through which hydrogen diffusion is affected in these materials.
