Development towards stable chlorine isotope measurements of astromaterials using the modified Middleton source of an accelerator mass spectrometer

The volatile element Cl can be lost during the formation and evolution of planetary bodies, leading to fractionation of its two stable isotopes 35 Cl and 37 Cl. Chlorine isotope variations (reported as δ 37 Cl in parts per thousand (‰) relative to Standard Mean Ocean Chloride, SMOC) are documented to exceed 80‰ between different lunar rock samples and have been variably interpreted as the fingerprint of degassing during accretion, magma ocean, or volcanic portions of lunar history. The large intersample and intrasample variations observed by both bulk isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) and in-situ secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) methods are difficult to interpret in part because of a paucity of bulk Cl isotope measurements. This lack of high-precision bulk data is due to the relative rarity of IRMS laboratories capable of making these high precision measurements on small samples of precious planetary materials such as those returned by human or robotic exploration. Here we present a new method for performing high precision δ 37 Cl measurements using the modified Middleton ion source of an existing accelerator mass spectrometer. For samples with as little as 1 μg Cl–the equivalent of 2–4 mm 3 of a typical lunar rock sample–the average cathode accuracy is ~1‰. Finally, cathode reproducibility is typically ~1‰ (2σ) for samples with at least 10 μg of Cl, increasing to ~3–6‰ for aliquots with ~1–2 μg Cl, similar to published SIMS results and sufficient to study astromaterials from the Moon, Mars, or 4 Vesta, which have tens of ‰ observed variations.

Phagosomal chloride dynamics in the alveolar macrophage

Acidification in intracellular organelles is tightly linked to the influx of Cl – counteracting proton translocation by the electrogenic V-ATPase. We quantified the dynamics of Cl – transfer accompanying cargo incorporation into single phagosomes in alveolar macrophages (AMs). Phagosomal Cl – concentration and acidification magnitude were followed in real time with maximal acidification achieved at levels of approximately 200 mM. Live cell confocal microscopy verified that phagosomal Cl – influx utilized predominantly the Cl – channel CFTR. Relative levels of elemental chlorine (Cl) in hard X-ray fluorescence microprobe (XFM) analysis within single phagosomes validated the increase in Cl – content. XFM revealed the complex interplay between elemental K content inside the phagosome and changes in Cl – during phagosomal particle uptake. Cl – -dependent changes in phagosomal membrane potential were obtained using second harmonic generation (SHG) microscopy. These studies provide a mechanistic insight for screening studies in drug development targeting pulmonary inflammatory disease.

Cleavable quaternary oxychlorides with high magnetic ordering temperatures

Quaternary oxychlorides derived from Ruddlesden–Popper 3d transition metal oxides offer a route to cleavable crystals with bulk antiferromagnetic ordering temperatures reaching at least 550 K. Here, we study the magnetic, optical, and mechanical behavior of Sr 2 FeO 3 Cl, Ca 2 FeO 3 Cl, Ca 3 Fe 2 O 5 Cl 2 , and Sr 3 Fe 2 O 5 Cl 2 . Through optical absorption measurements, we show that these antiferromagnetic semiconductors have optical band gaps of ≈2.1(1) eV. The magnetic ordering symmetries and temperatures were probed by neutron powder diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy on polycrystalline samples, demonstrating Néel temperatures (T N ) near room temperature in the single layer Sr 2 FeO 3 Cl (T N ≈ 311 K) and Ca 2 FeO 3 Cl (T N ≈ 360 K), and the double-layer compound Sr 3 Fe 2 O 5 Cl 2 has T N ≈ 545 K. The high-spin moments of Fe 3+ lie within the basal plane and the magnetic structures are compensated within each magnetic layer and characterized by magnetic propagation vectors k = ($\frac{1}{2}$ $\frac{1}{2}$ 0). Magnetization results demonstrate the quasi-2D nature of the magnetism, with a broad maximum in the susceptibility near 2T N for Sr 2 FeO 3 Cl. Scotch tape tests and mechanical exfoliation onto SiO 2 confirm the micaceous nature of these crystals with cleavage down to a single unit cell (two magnetic layers) achieved for Sr 3 Fe 2 O 5 Cl 2 . In conclusion, this paper highlights strong antiferromagnetic interactions, semiconducting band gaps, and cleavability of quaternary Fe-based oxychlorides and motivates future work on crystals and exfoliated flakes of these and related oxyhalide systems.

Materials Data on P4N3Cl11 by Materials Project

P4N3Cl11 crystallizes in the trigonal R3 space group. The structure is three-dimensional. there are two inequivalent P5+ sites. In the first P5+ site, P5+ is bonded to three equivalent N3- and one Cl1- atom to form corner-sharing PN3Cl tetrahedra. All P–N bond lengths are 1.60 Å. The P–Cl bond length is 2.04 Å. In the second P5+ site, P5+ is bonded to one N3- and three Cl1- atoms to form corner-sharing PNCl3 tetrahedra. The P–N bond length is 1.56 Å. There are a spread of P–Cl bond distances ranging from 1.99–2.02 Å. N3- is bonded in a distorted bent 150 degrees geometry to two P5+ atoms. There are five inequivalent Cl1- sites. In the first Cl1- site, Cl1- is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one P5+ and one Cl1- atom. The Cl–Cl bond length is 3.77 Å. In the second Cl1- site, Cl1- is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one P5+ and one Cl1- atom. The Cl–Cl bond length is 3.24 Å. In the third Cl1- site, Cl1- is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one P5+ and one Cl1- atom. The Cl–Cl bond length is 3.14 Å. In the fourth Cl1- site, Cl1- is bonded in a single-bond geometry to one P5+ atom. In the fifth Cl1- site, Cl1- is bonded in a 7-coordinate geometry to seven Cl1- atoms.
