Uncertainty-Proof Hosting Capacity with Surrogate Affine Policy

Physical constraints must be enforced when dis-tributed energy resources, such as PV, are integrated into distribution network. Hosting capacity (HC) is thus introduced to define the maximum renewable that distribution system can accommodate. When the grid is further pushed towards low-carbon, many research efforts are devoted to increasing HC. Security and cost-efficiency become even more important in determining HC. This work proposes an uncertainty-proof HC with surrogate affine policy. Flexible resources are leveraged to increase HC. We propose a novel hybrid two-stage AC model with variable uncertainty set. An iterative algorithm is designed to solve the problem. The proposed model and solution approach are validated in modified 141-node feeders, and HC performance is also analyzed.

Spatial-Temporal PV Hosting Capacity Estimation and Evaluation

Evaluating Photovoltaic Hosting Capacity (PVHC) is an essential step in the process of integrating solar energy into power grids, particularly when focusing on the distribution network (DN) as the primary integration target. PVHC needs to be investigated, especially in cases where the grids are unbalanced, and their operational conditions vary spatially and temporally. This motivation prompted us to propose a scalable model tailored to this application. In this paper, we applied linearization to the alternating current optimal power flow (AC-OPF) and solar inverters, transforming the original problem into a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problem. Additionally, we accounted for the battery energy storage system (BESS) as a time-coupling factor for calculating PVHC. We then compared the PVHC results between the IEEE-13 bus and SMART-DS San Francisco (SFO) cases and discussed the extent to which BESS can enhance the PVHC of a DN. Furthermore, we designed a web-based graphical visualization for the SFO case, enabling user interaction with raw data and simulation results on a map through a graphical user interface (GUI). In summary, our results and findings provide valuable insights for future three-phase unbalanced AC-OPF PVHC practices and their visualization.

Estimating Spatial Distribution Impacts of Rooftops Solar PV on Dynamic Hosting Capacity Evaluation for a Real Distribution Feeder

This paper models the sensitivity of dynamic hosting capacity analysis to the spatial distribution of distributed PV scenarios, random, close and far from substation deployments, at various penetration levels on a real distribution feeder, in a quasi-static time series (QSTS) power flow simulation using high resolution time-aware metrics. These spatial distribution scenarios were chosen to capture a wide range of potential operation impacts of these deployments using a set of thermaland voltage-based metrics such as instantaneous violations and moving averages for both thermal and voltage constraints. This study uses actual load and PV data up-scaled from 1-hour time step to 1-minute resolution to fully characterize the interaction between the daily changes in load and PV output, and their impacts on distribution system operations.

Perspective—Potential Benefit of Li-Rich Cathode Materials: Reduction of Co and Ni Content Rather than Achievement of Ultra-High Capacities

In the conventional cycling protocol for lithium and manganese rich NMC layered oxides (LMRNMC), the upper cutoff voltage V cut is extended to ~ 4.8, to achieve capacities of similar to 250 mAh g -1 . With this mode of operation, structural rearrangements result in voltage fade upon cycling. Herein, a strategy is proposed to avoid these structural rearrangements based on (a) restricting V cut to values < ~ 4.6 to shut down the bulk instabilities, and (b) application of a (preferably) semi-coherent coating that protects the surface oxygen. The potential benefit of this strategy would be to minimize Co and Ni content, compared to Ni-rich NMC.

Data for: Miscanthus × giganteus changes soil structure and increases maximum water holding capacity

The data provided include results from a comparative study evaluating the impact of Miscanthus × giganteus (miscanthus) versus maize on soil structural properties and maximum water holding capacity (MWHC) across two Iowa sites. The dataset includes MWHC values determined using the Funnel Filter Paper Drainage (FFPD) method, as well as additional measurements of MWHC following structural disruption of the soil to isolate the effect of aggregation. It also contains three-dimensional micro-computed tomography (microCT) data used to quantify total porosity and pore size distribution (PSD) of soil aggregates at a 5 µm resolution. All data are provided as raw replicate-level measurements, organized by site, crop, and depth, along with processed summary files in table form in CSV (.csv) format to support reproducibility and downstream analysis.

Saturation Carrying Capacity for Group A Particles in a Circulating Fluidized Bed

Empirical models continue to play a significant role in the design process of multiphase chemical reactors, particularly riser reactors in circulating fluidized bed (CFB) processes. It is imperative that accurate, industrial relevant correlations are developed to aid these design efforts. Using poor correlations could result in startup issues and significant redesign work. In this work, a new correlation is proposed to predict the saturation carrying capacity of Geldart Group A particles. This new correlation improves upon the currently available correlations for these materials and covers a broad range of Geldart Group A particles (particle diameters from 52 to 70 µm, and Archimedes numbers ranging from 5 to 20), superficial gas velocities (1 to 4 m/s), and riser diameters (0.066 to 0.3048 m). The new correlation has an Absolute Average Percent Deviation of only 17.6%, making it the most accurate correlation for Geldart Group A particles in the current literature.

Case Study: BESS Capacity Building for Malawi

To strengthen Malawi's national electricity grid and to enhance reliability, the government of Malawi and the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi are partnering with the Global Alliance for People and Planet to develop a 20-megawatt/30-megawatt-hour battery energy storage system at Kanengo, Malawi, expected to come online in 2026. In parallel, the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet and the National Laboratory of the Rockies implemented a comprehensive technical capacity-building program to equip the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi, the Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority, and the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences with the expertise needed to plan, regulate, and operate advanced storage systems.

Capacity of PPM on Gaussian and Webb Channels

This paper computes and compares the capacities of M-ary PPM on various idealized channels that approximate the optical communication channel: (1) the standard additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel;(2) a more general AWGN channel (AWGN2) allowing different variances in signal and noise slots;(3) a Webb-distributed channel (Webb2);(4) a Webb+Gaussian channel, modeling Gaussian thermal noise added to Webb-distributed channel outputs.
