Acciona Power Plant Hydrogen Mitigation Project

In 2014, Acciona Solar Power and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory initiated discussions to identify a method to solve a long-standing efficiency loss problem at parabolic trough power plants. Parabolic trough power plants begin to show lost thermal efficiency after six years of operation, due to the presence of trace concentrations of hydrogen in the heat transfer fluid that circulates in the power plant. Trace levels of hydrogen infiltrate the collector field receivers, increasing their heat loss, and decreasing the power plants’ thermal efficiency. At the time, Acciona’s Nevada Solar One power plant in Boulder City, Nevada was starting to show this efficiency loss. After several discussions, APS and NREL agreed to a collaborative effort (CRADA) to develop and implement a method to reduce hydrogen levels in the circulating HTF at the NSO power plant. The project was planned as a three-year effort, and work started in June 2015. The CRADA’s goal was to solve the long-standing lost efficiency problem caused by the buildup of hydrogen in the HTF, which significantly impacts the efficiency, electricity generation, and revenue from parabolic trough power plants.

Measurement and Reporting Guidelines for Solar Mirror Aging Tests Using Xenon Arc Lamp Exposure (XALE)

This technical report provides a guideline for accelerated aging tests on solar reflectors. Solar reflectors must have a high durability, with goal lifespans reaching 30 years. To test and develop state-of-the-art solar reflectors, relevant durability tests must be conducted. Existing guidelines for materials testing include isothermal testing, humidity testing, corrosion, etc., but many tests do not specify to include solar irradiance or address its relevance to solar reflector durability. The guideline focuses on test design and reporting guidelines for using Xenon Arc Lamp Exposure (XALE). The XALE environmental chambers can subject samples to a combination of relevant environmental factors including concentrated solar irradiance, heat, humidity, and weathering cycles. The guideline is meant to provide information on developing relevant test conditions, exposure times, reflectance characterization procedures, and data reporting.

Drop C: The Drop-In, Ring-of-Power Heliostat (Final Report)

This report summarizes the work performed within the Drop-C: The Drop-In, Ring-of-Power Heliostat project. The Drop-C project aimed to develop a novel heliostat with an installed cost of $\$50$/m 2 ($\$2015$) which is a drastic cost reduction compared to the state-of-the-art. The resulting 27m 2 SunRing TM heliostat’s relative small size necessitates the parallel development of a wireless solar field network and a rapid calibration system. The SunRing heliostat is an evolution of the Ring-of-Power (ROP) design from Abengoa Solar LLC which had a reported installed cost of $114/m 2 . Cost savings relative to the ROP were sought by increasing the mirror area, improving the structural efficiency, a more accurate assessment of wind loads, and an improved assembly and installation procedure. The project spanned three Budget Periods (BP) where a digital heliostat was developed in BP1 using wind tunnel testing to define load conditions.

3D Printing of Solar Absorber Tube with Internal/External Structures for Heat Transfer Enhancement and Temperature Leveling using Additive Manufacturing Technology

In this project, to tackle the technical obstacles, we utilized Laser Additive Alloying (LAA), an additive manufacturing (AM) technology, to 3D print the entire absorber tube with optimized helical fins to improve heat transfer at the expense of minimized pressure drop increase. The 3D printed absorber tubes can increase the uniformity of circumferential temperature distribution, reduced the thermal stresses, decrease the heat loss, and reach the target receiver thermal efficiency.
