Characterization of Tank 11H samples from tank closure cesium removal (TCCR) Batch 3 - intermediate and final samples

Savannah River Remediation (SRR) is currently operating the Tank Closure Cesium Removal (TCCR) process to remove 137 Cs from tank waste supernate using an ion exchange process. The TCCR unit processes dissolved salt from Tank 10H through a series of ion exchange columns containing crystalline silicotitanate (CST) and the effluent is then discharged to Tank 11H. Four interim samples pulled from Tank 11H during and just after the completion of processing of Batch 3 through the TCCR process have been analyzed for 137 Cs activity and density. The 137 Cs activity was found to decrease with each subsequent sample, which is consistent with the addition of decontaminated solution to Tank 11H. When compared to the expected composition from mixing the Tank 10H Batch 3 feed with the material already present in Tank 11H, the bulk chemical composition was as expected. A corrosion control sample collected from Tank 11H in June 2020 showed changes in the chemical composition and 137 Cs activity when compared to the composition measured at the end of Batch 2 processing. As there were no additions made to the tank during this period, these changes were attributed to leaching of the solids present in Tank 11H. Revision 1 of this report contains additional analyses of the fourth interim sample including inductively coupled plasma – mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) results and activities of other radionuclides. These results are consistent with the previously reported results, showing leaching from the Tank 11H heel. Notably, the 90 Sr activity was about 2.7x higher than calculated from a mixture of the original Tank 11H supernate and the Tank 10H supernate as treated by TCCR, suggesting additional leaching of Sr from the Tank 11H heel solids. In addition, Revision 1 includes analysis results for the Batch 3 Post-Production surface and variable depth samples collected in October of 2020. The Post-Production surface sample was similar in composition to the fourth interim surface sample, except for the increased Cs-137 and oxalate concentrations that were presumably associated with leaching of the Tank 11H heel solids.

Observation of Extraordinary Vibration Scatterings Induced by Strong Anharmonicity in Lead‐Free Halide Double Perovskites

Abstract Lead‐free halide double perovskites provide a promising solution for the long‐standing issues of lead‐containing halide perovskites, i.e., the toxicity of Pb and the low stability under ambient conditions and high‐intensity illumination. Their light‐to‐electricity or thermal‐to‐electricity conversion is strongly determined by the dynamics of the corresponding lattice vibrations. Here, the measurement of lattice dynamics is presented in a prototypical lead‐free halide double perovskite(Cs 2 NaInCl 6 ). The quantitative measurements and first‐principles calculations show that the scatterings among lattice vibrations at room temperature are at the timescale of ≈1 ps, which stems from the extraordinarily strong anharmonicity in Cs 2 NaInCl 6 . Further the degree of anharmonicity of each type of atom is quantitatively characterized in the Cs 2 NaInCl 6 single crystal, which stems from the interatomic forces, and demonstrate that this strong anharmonicity is synergistically contributed by the bond hierarchy, the tilting of the NaCl 6 and InCl 6 octahedral units, and the rattling of Cs + ions. Consequently, the crystalline Cs 2 NaInCl 6 possesses an ultralow thermal conductivity of ≈0.43 W mK −1 at room temperature, and a weak temperature dependence ofT −0.41 . These findings uncovered the underlying mechanisms behind the dynamics of lattice vibrations in double perovskites, which can largely benefit the design of optoelectronics and thermoelectrics based on halide double perovskites.

The Role of Alkalis in Orchestrating Uranyl-Peroxide Reactivity Leading to Direct Air Capture of Carbon Dioxide

Spectator ions have known and emerging roles in aqueous metal-cation chemistry, respectively directing solubility, speciation, and reactivity. Here, in this work, we isolate and structurally characterize the last two metastable members of the alkali uranyl triperoxide series, the Rb + and Cs + salts (Cs-U 1 and Rb-U 1 ). We document their rapid solution polymerization via small-angle X-ray scattering, which is compared to the more stable Li + , Na + and K + analogues. To understand the role of the alkalis, we also quantify alkali-hydroxide promoted peroxide deprotonation and decomposition, which generally exhibits increasing reactivity with increasing alkali size. Cs-U 1 , the most unstable of the uranyl triperoxide monomers, undergoes ambient direct air capture of CO 2 in the solid-state, converting to Cs 4 [U VI O 2 (CO 3 ) 3 ], evidenced by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. We have attempted to benchmark the evolution of Cs-U 1 to uranyl tricarbonate, which involves a transient, unstable hygroscopic solid that contains predominantly pentavalent uranium, quantified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Powder X-ray diffraction suggests this intermediate state contains a hydrous derivative of CsU V O 3 , where the parent phase has been computationally predicted, but not yet synthesized.
