Triple integrated laser – thyristor

A triple laser – thyristor, i. e., a semiconductor laser with three emitting sections monolithically integrated with an electronic switch (thyristor) is experimentally studied. For comparison, the output characteristics of single and double laser – thyristors are presented. It is shown that the functional integration of a laser with a thyristor in one heterostructure allows the laser to efficiently operate in a pulsed regime (output power ∼50 W), the use of vertical integration of two laser sections increases the power to ∼90 W, and the integration of three laser sections makes it possible to increase the output optical power to ∼120 W with all other conditions being the same. Strong mutual increase in the efficiency of isotope-selective laser IR dissociation of molecules under nonequilibrium thermodynamic conditions of the compression shock under irradiation in a bimolecular mixture

We have revealed a strong (by a factor of 2 to 5) mutual increase in the yield of IR molecular dissociation (by the example of CF{sub 2}HCl and CF{sub 3}Br) and a significant (by a factor of 1.5 to 3) lowering of dissociation thresholds in the nonequilibrium thermodynamic conditions of compression shock in the irradiation of the molecules by resonance IR laser radiation in the bimolecular mixture in comparison with their individual irradiation. This opens up the possibility to perform efficient isotope-selective IR dissociation of molecules at lower excitation energy densities (Φ ⩽ 1.5 – 2.0 J cm{sup −2}) and thereby to improve the dissociation selectivity. This was demonstrated by the example of chlorine- and bromine-isotope selective dissociation of the specified molecules, which are characterised by quite small (less than 0.25 cm{sup −1}) isotope shifts in the IR vibrational absorption spectra excited by laser radiation. The enrichment coefficients K {sub enr}({sup 35}Cl / {sup 37}Cl) = 0.90 ± 0.05 in the residual CF{sub 2}HCl gas and K {sub enr}({sup 79}Br / {sup 81}Br) in the resultant Br{sub 2} product are obtained when the CF{sub 2}HCl : CF{sub 3}Br = 1 : 1 molecular mixture and CF{sub 3}Br molecules, respectively, are irradiated by the 9R(30) CO{sub 2} laser line (frequency, 1084.635 cm{sup −1}) at an energy density Φ ≈ 1.3 J cm{sup −2}. Synthesis of fluorocarbon nanofilms on titanium using high-power KrF laser radiation

Fluorocarbon (C : F) nanofilms up to 60 nm thick are synthesised on a titanium surface. The films are obtained by annealing thin layers of fluorocarbon oil (FO) (with an area of 0.6 cm{sup 2}) in air with pulsed (80-ns) KrF laser radiation having a fluence of more than 4 J cm{sup −2}. The strength of C : F nanocoatings turns out to be comparable with that of titanium and exceeds several hundred times the corresponding characteristics of Teflon F-4. The high transparency of FO indicates a possibility of using it as a cover liquid when modifying titanium surface using beams of various technological lasers. (paper)

Effect of CO{sub 2}-laser power density on the absorption coefficient of polycrystalline CVD diamonds

The effect of 1-s irradiation of an uncooled polycrystalline CVD diamond plate by a focused cw CO{sub 2} laser beam with a power density of 300 – 800 kW cm{sup −2} is investigated. The absorption coefficient of the sample at a power density of 800 kW cm{sup −2} is found to be 0.035 cm{sup −1} larger as compared with that at 300 kW cm{sup −2}, which is related to the temperature dependence of its phonon-induced absorption with a change in temperature from 44 to 100 °C. It is shown that polycrystalline diamond, in contrast to other optical materials, does not exhibit nonlinear (avalanche-like) rise in absorption at high CO{sub 2}-laser power densities, at least up to 800 kW cm{sup −2}. Two-frequency sub-Doppler spectroscopy of the caesium D{sub 1} line in various configurations of counterpropagating laser beams

Sub-Doppler resonances in caesium vapours are studied in a laser field produced by counterpropagating two-frequency light beams with mutually orthogonal linear polarisations. The beams are in resonance with optical transitions in the D{sub 1} line, the frequency difference of the field spectral components being equal to the hyperfine ground-state splitting in the Cs atom (∼9.2 GHz). It has already been shown that in this configuration, the hypercontrast effect can be observed for sub-Doppler resonances, which makes this configuration promising for the employment in new-generation miniature optical frequency standards. In the present work, two different two-frequency configurations are compared with each other and with the single-frequency configuration widely used in practice for observing saturated absorption resonances. The parameters of nonlinear resonances are measured at various temperatures of caesium vapours and at different optical field intensities. The results of the investigations performed make it possible to find an optimal two-frequency scheme for exciting nonlinear resonances and to estimate a potential of the scheme for its applications in quantum metrology. Radiofrequency synthesiser with an intrinsic instability of 5 × 10{sup −15} at the averaging time of 1 s based on a femtosecond erbium-doped fibre laser

A radio-optical synthesiser intended for operation in a radio-frequency master oscillator with an optical He – Ne/CH{sub 4} frequency standard (λ = 3.39 μm) is developed on the basis of a femtosecond erbium-doped fibre laser. The synthesiser generates equidistant harmonics in the frequency range of 1 – 10 GHz with stability determined by the optical frequency standard. A stable supercontinuum spectrum is formed in the range around 1.06 μm, which provides stable 24-hour operation of the synthesiser and is important for practical applications in off-laboratory conditions. A direct comparison of the output frequencies of two synthesisers shows that the up-grade of the fibre laser and detection system of femtosecond pulses results in the synthesiser intrinsic instability of 5 × 10{sup −15} at the averaging time of 1 s. Such a value is by an order of magnitude less than that obtained in our earlier works. (laser frequency standards)

Spectrally selective modulation of terahertz radiation beams

We report the results of an experimental study on the focusing of broadband terahertz (THz) radiation using lenses and Fresnel zone plates. The obtained data are compared with the results of numerical simulations. It is shown that the use of lenses for focusing THz radiation can lead to the appearance of a ring structure in the spatial distributions of its intensity. The use of Fresnel zone plates allows the spatial distribution of the THz radiation intensity to be varied at selected frequencies of the spectrum. (terahertz radiation)

Seven-core fibre Raman laser with intercore coupling

This paper reports results of a study aimed at producing a Raman fibre laser based on a multicore fibre with high-reflectivity fibre Bragg gratings inscribed in its peripheral cores using femtosecond laser pulses. We present spectral and power characteristics of a Raman laser whose output power at a wavelength of 1090 nm is 2.5 W. The laser emission linewidth has been shown to decrease as a result of the reduction in nonlinear effects owing to the larger effective mode area in the multicore fibre in comparison with a standard single-mode fibre Raman laser. Bulk cloud microphysical properties as seen from numerical simulation and remote sensing products: case study of a hailstorm event over the La Plata Basin

Hailstorms develop over the La Plata Basin, in south-eastern South America, more often during later winter and early austral spring, between September and October. These systems have significant socioeconomic impacts over the region. Thus, a better understanding of how atmospheric drivers modulate the formation of hailstorms is important to improve the forecast of such phenomena. In this study, we selected a hailstorm event observed over the eastern La Plata Basin during 14–15 July 2016 to evaluate the performance of the Brazilian developments on the Regional Atmospheric Modelling System (BRAMS) model. The ability of the model in simulating cloud microphysical properties was evaluated by comparing simulations driven by different global forcings against in situ and remote sensing observations. The model results showed good skill in capturing the basic characteristics of the thunderstorm, particularly in terms of the spatial distribution of hydrometeors. The simulated spatial distribution of hail covers locations where hail fall was reported. The BRAMS simulations suggest that, despite relatively low values of the convective available potential energy (CAPE) (700–1000 J kg -1 ), environments with strong 0–8-km bulk shear (60–70 kt, ~30.9–36.0 m s –1 ) can promote the formation of ice clouds and hail fall over the eastern La Plata Basin. To be more conclusive, however, further research is needed to understand how different combinations of CAPE and shear affect hail formation over the region.

Performance Restoration of a Tritium-Aged LaNi 4.25 Al 0.75 Sample

Hydride beds containing LaNi 4.25 Al 0.75 (LANA.75) are used to store significant quantities of tritium. These hydride beds have a limited service life due to radiolytic decay of tritium to 3He within the metal matrix. The crystal structure of the hydride is altered by trapped 3 He, which has a very low solubility in the metal. The altered structure induces the formation of a heel of trapped hydrogen isotopes and diminishes the reversible capacity of the hydride. With sufficient tritium exposure, the bed loses the ability to deliver 3He-free tritium, and replacement is needed. Demonstration of a means to regenerate tritium-aged LANA.75 in situ would delay or even eliminate the need to replace lanthanum nickel aluminum (LANA) hydride beds. This paper presents test results obtained during regeneration testing. The efficacy of regeneration testing was evaluated by comparing tritium desorption isotherms collected on the hydride before and after exposure to regeneration conditions. Testing was performed on a bench-scale tritium-aged LANA.75 sample that was previously isotopically exchanged (from tritium to deuterium), passivated, and recovered. Once transferred to a high-temperature test cell, the deuterium heel of the sample was isotopically exchanged with tritium, and a baseline desorption isotherm was collected for comparison purposes. The sample was then heated under vacuum, and comparative isotherms were gathered between regeneration evolutions. Shifts in isotherms show progressive improvements with higher-temperature exposure over the tritium-aged baseline. The heel was significantly reduced, and the reversible capacity of the hydride was essentially restored to near virgin values. For all tested conditions, the plateau pressure remained higher than virgin LANA.75.

Assessing methods in fusion and fitting for time series construction in remote sensing-based earth observations

This study evaluates the comparative performance of spatiotemporal fusion and time-series fitting methods for constructing high-spatiotemporal-resolution remote sensing time-series data. Due to in-class similarity of fusion methods and fitting methods, we employ the Fit-FC (Fitting, spatial Filtering, and residual Compensation) model as a representative fusion method and the linear harmonic fitting model as a representative fitting method. Both Fit-FC and the linear harmonic fitting are widely used for high-spatiotemporal-resolution time-series data construction, and we modify the original Fit-FC model to enable automatic time-series fusion. To ensure data representativeness, we use 3 years (2019–2021) of Harmonized Landsat and Sentinel-2 surface reflectance datasets and Terra MCD43A4 products. Eight experimental regions are selected worldwide to guarantee generalization of the comparative performance between fusion and fitting methods, covering diverse land-use types (cropland, developed land, forest, and grassland) and varying climatological conditions. Time-series of NDVI and surface reflectance are analyzed under both actual observations and simulated data-missing scenarios. The constructed time-series data reveals that (1) the modified Fit-FC and linear harmonic fitting model achieve excellent performance in constructing high-resolution time-series images; (2) the fusion method outperforms the fitting method in constructing time-series of NDVI and surface reflectance images in cropland-, forest-, and grassland-dominated regions; (3) both methods achieve comparable performance in developed-dominated regions; (4) the fusion method is more robust to missing data, and better captures abrupt phenological transitions under conditions of continuous missing data; (5) the fitting method is computationally more efficient, making it suitable for large-scale time-series image reconstruction. This study provides valuable insights for selecting optimal strategies to generate high-resolution time-series images across diverse application scenarios and lays a foundation for extensions to other vegetation indices or land surface variables.

Exploratory investigation on the use of low-cost alternative media for ultrafine grinding of coal

In this study, the energy efficiency of three alternative grinding media including, coarse silica beads, fine silica beads, and granular sand, were evaluated and compared against standard stainless steel. Stirred mill test results show that both silica beads and granular sand were more efficient than stainless steel in producing ultrafine particles following the order of coarse silica beads>granular sand>fine silica beads>stainless steel. The finest product size corresponding to a P 80 value of 2.33 μm was generated by coarse silica beads with a nominal size of 420×1190 μm, which also consumed the least amount of grinding energy. The specific energy input was reduced by almost 50% as opposed to that of stainless steel, while the operating work index was reduced by 87%. Overall, the test data indicate that grinding media density, media particle size and shape all play a role in determining the optimized grinding behavior of the coal material.

Mathematical solutions in internal dose assessment: A comparison of Python-based differential equation solvers in biokinetic modeling

Abstract In biokinetic modeling systems employed for radiation protection, biological retention and excretion have been modeled as a series of discretized compartments representing the organs and tissues of the human body. Fractional retention and excretion in these organ and tissue systems have been mathematically governed by a series of coupled first-order ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The coupled ODE systems comprising the biokinetic models are usually stiff due to the severe difference between rapid and slow transfers between compartments. In this study, the capabilities of solving a complex coupled system of ODEs for biokinetic modeling were evaluated by comparing different Python programming language solvers and solving methods with the motivation of establishing a framework that enables multi-level analysis. The stability of the solvers was analyzed to select the best performers for solving the biokinetic problems. A Python-based linear algebraic method was also explored to examine how the numerical methods deviated from an analytical or semi-analytical method. Results demonstrated that customized implicit methods resulted in an enhanced stable solution for the inhaled 60 Co (Type M) and 131 I (Type F) exposure scenarios for the inhalation pathway of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) Publication 130 Human Respiratory Tract Model (HRTM). The customized implementation of the Python-based implicit solvers resulted in approximately consistent solutions with the Python-based matrix exponential method ( expm ). The differences generally observed between the implicit solvers and expm are attributable to numerical precision and the order of numerical approximation of the numerical solvers. This study provides the first analysis of a list of Python ODE solvers and methods by comparing their usage for solving biokinetic models using the ICRP Publication 130 HRTM and provides a framework for the selection of the most appropriate ODE solvers and methods in Python language to implement for modeling the distribution of internal radioactivity.

Nonlocal correlations in iron pnictides and chalcogenides

Deviations of low-energy electronic structurse of iron-based superconductors from density-functional-theory predictions have been parametrized in terms of band- and orbital-dependent mass renormalizations and energy shifts. The former have typically been described in terms of a local self-energy within the framework of dynamical mean field theory, while the latter appears to require nonlocal effects due to interband scattering. By calculating the renormalized band structure in both random phase approximation (RPA) and the two-particle self-consistent approximation (TPSC), we show that correlations in pnictide systems like LaFeAsO and LiFeAs can be described rather well by a nonlocal self-energy. In particular, Fermi pocket shrinkage as seen in experiments occurs due to repulsive interband finite-energy scattering. For the canonical iron chalcogenide system FeSe in its bulk tetragonal phase, the situation is, however, more complex since even including momentum-dependent band renormalizations cannot explain experimental findings. We propose that the nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction may play an important role in band-structure renormalization in FeSe. Finally, we further compare our evaluations of nonlocal quasiparticle scattering lifetime within RPA and TPSC with experimental data for LiFeAs.

Qutrit Randomized Benchmarking

Ternary quantum processors offer significant potential computational advantages over conventional qubit technologies, leveraging the encoding and processing of quantum information in qutrits (three-level systems). Therefore, to evaluate and compare the performance of such emerging quantum hardware it is essential to have robust benchmarking methods suitable for a higher-dimensional Hilbert space. We demonstrate extensions of industry standard randomized benchmarking (RB) protocols, developed and used extensively for qubits, suitable for ternary quantum logic. Using a superconducting five-qutrit processor, we find an average single-qutrit process infidelity of 3.8×10 -3 . Through interleaved RB, we characterize a few relevant gates, and employ simultaneous RB to fully characterize crosstalk errors. Finally, we apply cycle benchmarking to a two-qutrit CSUM gate and obtain a two-qutrit process fidelity of 0.85. Our results present and demonstrate RB-based tools to characterize the performance of a qutrit processor, and a general approach to diagnose control errors in future qudit hardware.

Bidirectional Three-phase Current Source Converter based Buck-boost AC/DC System using Bidirectional Switches

The 1.2 kV 4H-SiC BiDirectional Field Effect Transistor (BiDFET) is the first monolithic SiC bidirectional switch, which offers a lower voltage drop and semiconductor devices count alternative to the reverse-voltage-blocking (RB) switch used in the current-source converters (CSC). The bidirectional switch based CSC also allows DC-link current reversal for bidirectional power flow and provides multiple system-level benefits in a buck-boost AC/DC system consisting of buck-type DC/DC converter and CSC. This paper discusses the selection of buck converter duty cycle and CSC modulation index for the system’s buck-boost operation with a wide variation in DC voltage. CSC modulation schemes categorized based on the number of hard-turn-on transitions per switching cycle are also analyzed along with the three-step and four-step commutation schemes that are essential for the CSC commutation cells. Finally, the different schemes are evaluated and compared through the experimental results of a 10 kW, 480 VRMS, LL/ (400 − 800) V AC/DC system.

ScaleML: Machine Learning based Heap Memory Object Scaling Prediction

Memory subsystem contributes 28-40% of total energy consumption. Several studies investigated energy prediction and consumption via profiling memory object access patterns. However, such profiling leads to higher energy consumption due to intense memory object-level profiling to achieve high prediction accuracy. Further, memory object access pattern prediction has been considered through analyzing the variation between memory object access patterns, referred to as scaling rate. The existing techniques for scaling rate prediction, such as Linear Scaling Rate (LSR), suffer from a high error rate in prediction with changes in access patterns, which leads to a high error rate of energy consumption prediction. In this paper, we compare and evaluate several memory object access pattern prediction models including LSR and machine learning (ML) models. Further, we propose SCALEML, a heap memory object scaling rate prediction mechanism that employs an ML model to achieve high access pattern prediction accuracy with variations in memory object access patterns. We evaluate SCALEML using various application benchmarks. The experimental results show that SCALEML achieves about 20% higher accuracy than the LSR model for predicting the scaling rate of object access patterns and energy estimation.

Enhancing Solar Power Forecasting with Regularized Constrained Quantile Regression Averaging and Bootstrapping Techniques

Probabilistic solar power forecasting (SPF) plays an essential role in optimizing power-grid operations by quantifying the forecast uncertainty. To improve the accuracy and robustness of probabilistic SPF, this paper introduces the regularized constrained quantile regression averaging (rCQRA) method to combine outputs from multiple PSPF models. In addition, a bootstrapping method was used to quantify model uncertainty, providing insights into the reliability and significance of each ensemble component. To evaluate its efficacy, the proposed rCQRA method is used to integrate four PSPF methods. The resulting SPF models are trained and validated using a real-world six-year dataset from a rooftop solar plant in the USA. The performance of the proposed rCQRA method is evaluated and compared with two benchmark methods under three categories of weather conditions. It is shown that the rCQRA method has superior performance in its forecast reliability, sharpness, and accuracy.
