Algebraic grid generation using tensor product B-splines

Finite difference methods are more successful if the accompanying grid has lines which are smooth and nearly orthogonal. The development of an algorithm which produces such a grid when given the boundary description. Topological considerations in structuring the grid generation mapping are discussed. The concept of the degree of a mapping and how it can be used to determine what requirements are necessary if a mapping is to produce a suitable grid is examined. The grid generation algorithm uses a mapping composed of bicubic B-splines. Boundary coefficients are chosen so that the splines produce Schoenberg's variation diminishing spline approximation to the boundary. Interior coefficients are initially chosen to give a variation diminishing approximation to the transfinite bilinear interpolant of the function mapping the boundary of the unit square onto the boundary grid. The practicality of optimizing the grid by minimizing a functional involving the Jacobian of the grid generation mapping at each interior grid point and the dot product of vectors tangent to the grid lines is investigated. Grids generated by using the algorithm are presented.

Studies of hot B subdwarfs. II - Energy distributions of three bright sdB/sdOB stars in the 950-5500 A range

Voyager ultraviolet spectrometer observations of the subdwarf B or OB stars HD 205805, UV 1758+36 and Feige 66 are presented. All three objects display the H I Layman series in absorption. These observations are combined with low dispersion IUE spectrophotometry and with Stromgren photometry to construct virtually complete energy distributions, which extend over the range 950-5500 angstroms. Effective temperatures based on model atmosphere calculations for high gravity, hygrogen rich stars are determined. Our analyses yield T sub e 28,200 + or - 1300 K for HD 205805, T sub e 31, 800 + or - 1100 K for UV 1758+36, and T sub e 35,700 + or 1500 K for Feige 66. The importance of far ultraviolet observations below L sub alpha in reducing the uncertainties associated with the interstellar extinction and the degradation of the IUE sensitivity is emphasized.

Effects of jet flap on AV8-B 'Harrier' performance

This paper examines the effects of fitting various jet-flap configurations to an AV8-'Harrier II' Baseline aircraft using two NASA developed computer codes. The first code predicts the ground roll of an AV8-B with a partial span jet-flap, a full span jet-flap, a partial span internally blown-flap, and a full span internally blown-flap as well as the Baseline configuration. The second code used was a mission performance estimation routine called ACSYNT (Aircraft Synthesis). This code models each configuration on a standard mission so that the relative merits may be determined.

The effects of tantalum on the microstructure of two polycrystalline nickel-base superalloys - B-1900 + Hf and MAR-M247

The effect of changing the content of Ta on the gamma/gamma-prime carbide microstructure was investigated in two crystalline nickel-base superalloys: conventionally cast B-1900 + Hf, and both conventionally cast and directionally solidified MAR-M247. The changes occurring in the microstructure effects were similar in both alloys. The gamma-prime and carbide volume fractions increased linearly with Ta additions, while the gamma-prime phase compositions did not change. Bulk Ta additions increased the levels of Cr and Co (in addition to that of Ta) of the gamma phase, a result of the approximately constant partitioning ratios for these two elements. The addition of Ta led to a partial replacement of Hf in the MC carbides. In addition, Cr-rich M(23)C(6) carbides formed as a result of MC carbide decomposition during heat treatment.

Preliminary analyses of SIB-B radar data for recent Hawaii lava flows

The Shuttle Imaging Radar (SIR-B) experiment acquired two L-band (23 cm wavelength) radar images (at about 28 and 48 deg incidence angles) over the Kilauea Volcano area of southeastern Hawaii. Geologic analysis of these data indicates that, although aa lava flows and pyroclastic deposits can be discriminated, pahoehoe lava flows are not readily distinguished from surrounding low return materials. Preliminary analysis of data extracted from isolated flows indicates that flow type (i.e., aa or pahoehoe) and relative age can be determined from their basic statistics and illumination angle.

Observations of jets from low-luminosity stars - DG Tauri B

Low spectral resolution studies of DG Tau B, the faint system of knots south of the T Tauri star DG Tau, are described. The observations show this object to be bipolar, with the blueshifted lobe having extraordinarily low excitation. Infrared observations of the exciting star show it to be of very low luminosity, with a bolometric luminosity of 0.88 solar luminosity. The visual extinction indicates a highly nonspherical distribution of circumstellar dust around the exciting star. In spite of this lack of embedding within an obvious dark cloud, the system is identified as a young one.

Aerothermal modeling program, phase 2. Element B: Flow interaction experiment

The design process was improved and the efficiency, life, and maintenance costs of the turbine engine hot section was enhanced. Recently, there has been much emphasis on the need for improved numerical codes for the design of efficient combustors. For the development of improved computational codes, there is a need for an experimentally obtained data base to be used at test cases for the accuracy of the computations. The purpose of Element-B is to establish a benchmark quality velocity and scalar measurements of the flow interaction of circular jets with swirling flow typical of that in the dome region of annular combustor. In addition to the detailed experimental effort, extensive computations of the swirling flows are to be compared with the measurements for the purpose of assessing the accuracy of current and advanced turbulence and scalar transport models.

Aerothermal modeling program. Phase 2, element B: Flow interaction experiment

NASA has instituted an extensive effort to improve the design process and data base for the hot section components of gas turbine engines. The purpose of element B is to establish a benchmark quality data set that consists of measurements of the interaction of circular jets with swirling flow. Such flows are typical of those that occur in the primary zone of modern annular combustion liners. Extensive computations of the swirling flows are to be compared with the measurements for the purpose of assessing the accuracy of current physical models used to predict such flows.

Second epoch of simultaneous lambda 3.6 and lambda 13 cm observations of the pair of quasars 1038+528 A,B

It is found that the quasar 1038+528 B is a good reference for studying the internal motions in quasar 1038+528 A. The apparent superluminal motion of a feature in quasar A takes place with respect to a neary stationary core; its proper motion is bounded from above by about 40 micro-as/yr. The wavelength dependence of the location of the core brightness peak of A is confirmed.

HD 43246 and HD 127208 - Two unusual F-G + B binary systems

New optical spectroscopic observations along with ultraviolet IUE observations have been obtained for the two interacting F or G III + B V binaries: HD 43246 and HD 127208. Photometric observations indicate random changes superimposed on regular ellipsoidal light variations, the latter probably the result of tidal distortion of the giant primaries. Mass transfer and loss is apparent in inverted mass ratios derived from orbital analysis, strong wind features present in the spectra, and the presence of circumsystem shells. Regular and irregular changes in the spectral features are discussed in this context.

Fassaite composition trends during crystallization of Allende Type B refractory inclusion melts

Major-, minor-, and trace-element zoning trends in fassaite from Type B1 and B2 inclusions from the Allende meteorite are defined by using electron and ion microprobe data. Fassaite/liquid distribution coefficients are calculated for many of the lithophile elements, and evidence for and against the presence of relict fassaite in these inclusions is discussed. Major-element zoning in fassaite in Type B CAIs is found from Ti-, V-, Sc-rich cores to relatively Mg-, Si-rich rims. Trace elements that are incompatible in this fassaite are Nb (effective fassaite/liquid distribution = 0.29), Y(0.52), Ta(0.34), Th(0.053), U(0.4), and rare earth elements (0.31-0.48), while compatible trace elements are Zr(1.1) and Hf(1.5). Rare-earth-elements (RRE) abundances in fassaite are found to be controlled by crystal/liquid fractionation. Candidates for relict fassaite grains are discovered: Ti-, Sc-rich, REE-poor crystals enclosed in melilite in the mantle of TS34.

Evolutionary models and the p-mode oscillation spectrum of Alpha Centauri A and B

Spectroscopically observed abundances of Furenlid and Meylan (1990) and Los Alamos Opacity Library opacities specifically constructed for this mixture are used to construct the most detailed models to date for Alpha Cen A and B. Models including the effects of the diffusion of helium in Alpha Cen A's interior were constructed. Although the effect of helium diffusion is small in Alpha Cen A, it is slightly larger than in the sun because of the larger mass and therefore shallower convection zone of Alpha Cen A. Keeping the heavy-element mixture unchanged but varying Z within the uncertainties yields limits to the helium abundance of Y = 0.295 and 0.305, respectively. The derived age of Alpha Cen is 4.6 +/-0.4 Gyr, very similar to the solar age of 4.5 Gyr.

The JPL Phase B interferometer testbed

Future NASA missions with large optical systems will require alignment stability at the nanometer level. However, design studies indicate that vibration resulting from on-board disturbances can cause jitter at levels three to four orders of magnitude greater than this. Feasibility studies have shown that a combination of three distinct control layers will be required for these missions, including disturbance isolation, active and passive structural vibration suppression, and active optical pathlength compensation. The CSI technology challenge is to develop these design and control approaches that can reduce vibrations in the optical train by a factor of 1000 to 10,000. The focus of the paper is on describing the Phase B Testbed structure and facility, as the experimental results are included in other papers presented at this same conference.

Evidence for a bipolar nebula around the peculiar B(e) star HD 45677 from ultraviolet spectropolarimetry

We report the first ultraviolet spectropolarimetry of the peculiar B-type emission-line star with infrared excess HD 45677. The observations were obtained during the 1990 December Astro-l space shuttle mission with the Wisconsin Ultraviolet Photo-Polarimeter Experiment, and cover the spectral range 1400-3220 A. We also present the first optical spectropolarimetry, extending from the atmospheric cutoff to about 7600 A. The observed UV/optical linear polarization displays a strong increase toward shorter wavelengths indicative of scattering by circumstellar dust. The position angle of the intrinsic polarization flips by 90 deg in the near-UV as expected from a bipolar reflection nebula.

Relation of Engine Turbine-blade Life to Stress-rupture Properties of the Alloys, Stellite 21, Hastelloy B, Cast S-816, Forged S-816, X-40, Nimonic 80, Refractaloy 26, N-155, and Inconel X

An investigation was conducted to relate the engine performance of the heat-resistant alloys, Stellite 21, Hastelloy B, cast S-816, forged S-816, X-40, Nimonic 80, Refractory 26, N-155, and Iconel X to their stress-rupture properties. The engine test consisted of the repetition of a 20-minute cycle, 15 minutes at rated speed and approximately 5 minutes at idle. The results of the investigation indicated a direct correlation between stress-rupture life and blade life for the relatively low-strength alloys. The stress-rupture life and blade life for the relatively high-strength alloys did not correlate because of the effects of the vibratory stresses and the corrosive-gas atmosphere.

A comparison of in situ measurements of vector-E and - vector-V x vector-B from Dynamics Explorer 2

Dynamics Explorer-2 provided the first opportunity to make a direct comparison of in situ measurements of the high-latitude convection electric field by two distinctly different techniques. The vector electric field instrument (VEFI) used antennae to measure the intrinsic electric fields and the ion drift meter (IDM) and retarding potential analyzer (RPA) measured the ion drift velocity vector, from which the convection electric field can be deduced. The data from three orbits having large electric fields at high latitude are presented, one at high, one at medium, and one at low altitudes. The general agreement between the two measurements of electric field is very good, with typical differences at high latitudes of the order of a few millivolts per meter, but there are some regions where the particle fluxes are extremely large (e.g., the cusp) and the disagreement is worse, probably because of IDM difficulties. The auroral zone potential patterns derived from the two devices are in excellent agreement for two of the cases, but not in the third, where bad attitude data may be the problem. At low latitudes there are persistent differences in the measurements of a few millivolts per meter, though these differences are quite constant from orbit to orbit. This problem seems to arise from some shortcoming in the VEFI measurments. Overall, however, these measurements confirm the concept of `frozen-in' plasma that drifts with velocity vector-E x vector-B/B(exp 2) within the measurement errors of the two techniques.
